I would love to be able to sideload books and articles from jstor to my Kindle, and converting from pdf to AZW3 or MOBI often turns my files into an unintelligible garble. Is there any way to download non-pdf files from jstor????? please help :((
Hi! We're sorry you're running into issues here. I ran into a similar issue recently, and it's quite disappointing!
Right now, we have some articles and books available as epubs (like here), but file types apart from PDFs aren't widely supported across JSTOR. We expect to host more content available as epubs in the future.
PDFs aren't the easiest for conversion to other file types because they contain a lot of... stuff, to put it simply. You could have plain text or you could have a series of image scans, and these all behave differently. I've seen suggestions to convert PDFs to .docx or .txt files and then create epubs/other files out of them (but even that can get messy).
In short, there doesn't seem to be an easy solution for file conversion here because you're starting with a PDF. If anyone in the community has found a workaround for this, we'd love to hear it!
#jstor#ask#please if anyone has thoughts feel free to share!#apologies if this is kind of nonsensical your local JSTOR mod is not a foremost expert on these topics#but i have similarly tried to put things on my kindle before with little success (pdf to epub destroyed the page scans)#my solution was to compress the pdf and add that directly to the kindle but i lost some functionality like syncing across devices

Part II. On Spring Cleaning, the Lingering Frost
or alternatively: No weight is heavier than regret.
+ Spring follows the harshness of Winter. Though seen as a 'soft' season, it is associated with rebirth—bloody flesh transforming into itself, skin rupturing at the seams. A renewal of sorts. Soft it may seem, Spring is simply as kind as the winter allows it to be. ... In this life, how many ghosts haunt these halls? How many will you allow? Maybe it's time for an upheaval. Such is the role of Spring.
Part I | Part III | Part IV
authors below:
Illustrations from A Stepmother’s Märchen | Unknown | Spring Equinox, Jeanette Winterson | The Years, Virginia Woolf | We Have Always Lived in the Castle, Shirley Jackson | South London Forever, Florence & The Machine | a letter, Germaine de Staël (translated by Kathleen Jameson-Cemper) | West Wind, Mary Oliver | Letters From Medea, Salma Deera | tumblr post, @/inelegancies | Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Becky Albertalli | Japanese Breakfast | The Letters Of Sylvia Plath, Sylvia Plath | Vincenzo Bellini | I, Carrion (Icarian), Hozier | I Don’t Smoke, Mitski | The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller | When the Sun Loves the Moon, Reinaeiry | Soul Mates, Lang Leav | a letter, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry | This Is How You Lose The Time War, Amal El-Mohtar | Circe, Madeline Miller | a letter, Friedrich Nietzsche | Daily Haiku on Love, Tyler Knott Gregson | Ivy, Frank Ocean | The Vow | Annabel Lee, Edgar Allan Poe | Mind Over Matter, Young the Giant | Great Expectations, Charles Dickens | I, Carrion (Icarian), Hozier | The Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller | This Side of Paradise, F. #i tried my best to avoid putting red roses! all roses there (i think) are either orange white or pink which can read more platonically#all the screen caps were from the 1st season (bar the epilogues)#and this ended up more focused on the devotion of their love. which. if i think about that too much i will throw up#devotion to each other and devotion to their family#ourghh i need to see jershu semi co-parenting. it would fix me (it would make me worse)#it ended up looking more like autumn but swear it has more color in the actual file </3 </3 </3#i had to compress it again 😞 i should just put a link for the pdf maybe TSK#this was more experimental than anything so it was so fun to make (it made me tear my eyes out)#jershu#jeremy von neuschwanstein#shuli von neuschwanstein#a stepmother's marchen#the fantasie of a stepmother#asm#web weave#words words words#it deliberately goes from more purples to more pinks and then finally yellows to mimic the flow of the season#<— by the end we're entering 'summer'#part 3 of this will be absolutely huge. i don't think i even have enough panels for that#and yes i did make some changes to part 1

My Fuckass Job update: we are officially banned from carrying books "on the floor," to combat...staff...reading on the job when it's slow instead of, idk, doing busywork or feigning looking busy. We work in a bookstore. I am sooo tempted to be pedantic and remonstrate with them on imprecise semantic terms but that would be unproductive in the extreme. It would, however, be very funny if we all pretended to take it literally and just stopped shelving/stocking/pulling for a week
#The Anti-Reading Campaign is sooo funny#Given our profession#And the fact that we're expected to read and review ARCs for the store#I read archival PDFs or send compressed files to myself and open them on#An encrypted window in a foreign language lol

so, .CBZ files are just zipped folders of numbered files renamed to a different extension. the thing is-- look at this screenshot from the .CBZ reader.
beautiful. crisp pixels.
but if i turn it back into a .zip folder, the .tif files are NOT crisp like this. here's an example of a page which is also present in the regular secretary, which has completely clean pixel lines
can someone better at this explain to me why the CBZ reader can make these files presumably their native resolution but the tif files being fed to the program compress them when i open them
#nofna shitposting#it is relevant to wanting to put out an electronic version of idletry#PDFs also compress images...

just spent half an hour examining all my physical books to try to choose one to read on my commute next and utterly failed
#I don’t know man#I also opened up my kobo and then remembered I’d loaded like 60 new unread books onto it back in December and then closed that as well#what I do want to read is my l.r. lam emberclaw netgalley arc#however that is a fucking pdf and is unreadable on my kobo bc the text is compressed so small#it’s readable on the iPad but it’s too big and heavy to carry with me#publishers make arcs available as epubs challenge 2k25

This is how you know it's going to be a high quality CBZ file.
I really should add in some jpeg or webp compression huh?
#fyi this happens mostly when the pdfs I'm extracting aren't using lossless images inside the pdf#so that lack of compression is because the compression artifacts already present are inflating the lossless png extraction I'm doing#:p
