What is the Word to PDF converter tool?
A Word to PDF converter tool is a software or online service that allows you to convert documents created in Microsoft Word (usually in .doc or .docx formats) into PDF (Portable Document Format) files. PDF is a widely used format for sharing and preserving documents because it ensures that the document's layout and formatting remain consistent across different devices and platforms.
Tumblr media
why use the Word to PDF converter tool
Word to PDF converter tools are valuable for ensuring document integrity, compatibility, security, and ease of distribution, making them essential in various professional and personal contexts. Also Word to PDF converter tools are used for several reasons. e.g.
Preserving Document Formatting: When you convert a Word document to PDF, it retains the layout, fonts, images, and overall formatting. This ensures that the document looks the same on different devices and operating systems.
Universal Compatibility: PDF is a widely supported format. It can be opened and viewed on various devices and platforms without the need for specific software, unlike Word documents which require Microsoft Word or compatible software.
Document Security: PDFs can be password-protected or encrypted, adding a layer of security to your documents. This is useful when you want to restrict access to the content.
Reducing File Size: PDFs are often smaller in file size than Word documents, making them easier to share via email or upload to the web.
Archiving: PDF is a suitable format for long-term document storage and archival, as it is less susceptible to formatting errors or changes over time.
Online Publishing: Many websites and platforms prefer PDFs for publishing documents, as they maintain a consistent appearance and are easy for users to download and read.
Legal and Business Documents: PDFs are commonly used for legal contracts, reports, business proposals, and other important documents because they ensure the integrity of the content.
Printing: PDFs are the preferred format for high-quality printing, as they eliminate issues with font and formatting variations that can occur when printing Word documents.
Comments and Annotations: Many PDF readers offer features for adding comments, annotations, and digital signatures to the document, making it useful for collaboration and feedback.
Compliance and Regulations: In some industries and for certain documents, there may be legal or regulatory requirements to use PDF format for reporting and documentation.
What are the benefits of using Word to pdf converter tool?
Using a Word to PDF converter tool offers several benefits:
Preserves Formatting: It retains the original layout, fonts, images, and formatting of your Word document, ensuring it looks the same on different devices and platforms.
Universal Compatibility: PDF files can be opened and viewed on various devices and operating systems without the need for specific software. This ensures broader accessibility.
Reduced File Size: PDFs are often smaller in size than Word documents, making them easier to share via email, upload to websites, or store on your computer or cloud storage.
Document Security: PDFs can be password-protected or encrypted, adding a layer of security to sensitive documents and controlling access to their content.
Content Integrity: PDFs are less susceptible to accidental edits or changes, ensuring the integrity of your document's content over time.
High-Quality Printing: PDFs are the preferred format for printing because they eliminate issues with font and formatting variations, resulting in professional-looking printouts.
Cross-Platform Consistency: PDFs provide a consistent viewing experience on different platforms, reducing the risk of compatibility issues that can occur with Word documents.
Online Publishing: PDFs are commonly used for publishing documents on websites, as they maintain a consistent appearance and are easy for users to download and read.
Digital Signatures: PDFs often support digital signatures, making them suitable for contracts, legal documents, and other materials that require authentication.
Reduced Environmental Impact: Since PDFs are easily shared electronically, they reduce the need for printing, helping to save paper and reduce environmental impact.
Archiving: PDFs are a suitable format for long-term document storage and archival, as they are less susceptible to degradation and format changes over time.
Compliance and Regulations: In some industries, there are legal or regulatory requirements to use PDF format for specific documents, ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Marvel Rivals does two very weird things with matchmaking. the first one is where, instead of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM), they use a method they literally invented named "EnMatch" (link downloads a pdf of their research paper), which builds on an earlier rudimentary version of the same idea referred to as engagement-optimized matchmaking (EOMM).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
to summarize: it still uses a traditional Elo-esque system to quantify the skill of individual players, but unlike SBMM, which aims to balance these Elo ratings between two teams to ensure a fair match (under the natural assumption that players want to play fair matches), EnMatch instead uses a literal AI to predict what win-loss ratio every player needs to not ragequit at that exact moment and then attempts to give players easier or harder games as appropriate. the difference isn't massive, something like a 45% expected winrate instead of 50%, but it's there and it's on purpose. if you read between the lines of the section about influencing factors, they even leave the door open to stuff like cosmetics purchases influencing matchmaking
the second weird thing builds off of that and is thankfully limited to quickplay (unlike EnMatch which is present in ranked): if you lose enough quickplay matches in a row, you get put into a game against 6 easy bots, with 2 bots on your own team to autofill healers/tanks to avoid team composition issues. there are a few tells that let you know you're in a bot game once you know to look out for them, but the insidious thing is, the game never tells you you're playing against bots! there's a separate "Practice vs AI" mode, but this thing im describing happens in the normal quickplay queue! and the reason it sucks so bad, other than still getting the full leaver penalties if you leave, is because it results in posts on the subreddit/discord of people either posting a clip of them "popping off" against literal easy mode bots, or posting clips of a Punisher bot aimbotting them down and asking people to report them for hacks (because they are in fact literally aimbotting). obviously this feature is in the game for the exact kind of player who would never notice it and is there to give them an easy win to discourage a ragequit after a loss streak, but it just feels kinda scummy imo

"Alright. That's enough of that." "--Buah!"
and that's the end of the womanulet. forever.
no just the end of this series. between this, the goblins, and the bandits, i made 44 illustrations on this theme. that's crazy. i'll polish them up and put 'em together as a PDF for release next month, so look forward to that! i am most certainly not done with amulets, but i'll likely explore something different next time.
anyway aside from that, this is your last reminder for the suggestion box! and also a walk in the woods is coming out! it hasn't been doing too hot on sales (which, whatever, i also haven't been promoting it optimally) so the Challenge to release the files early tonight is pretty low. it's at 42 now, if it hits 80 tonight, i'll release it before tomorrow!

Extended SimStandardMaterial Shader for the Sims 2 + Optionally Brighter Sims
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Shader Edit/Default Replacement
A few months ago, I shared an edit of the "StandardMaterial" shader adding a few new features. Here are the same parameters ported to "SimStandardMaterial", the shader used by CaS items that don't involve the skin texture. For example, accessories, hair, and additional groups on clothing. The new parameters are: - An "additive" texture map, lighting up specific areas of the material. - An envCube mask, controlling the intensity of this effect via a texture. - Three new envCube modes: + "Blend" replaces the base texture by the envCube's. + "Multiply" multiplies them together (duh). + "DiffuseRadiance", which I also ported from the StandardMaterial. All three of them support the envCube mask and the envCubeCoef parameter. The envCube modes are mutually exclusive, but all effects can otherwise be used with each other. The download itself contains the shader package, a pdf ReadMe listing features and material parameters, and examples showcased on Maxis meshes (including those from the header). The readme lists the specific shader file I've edited. You can use this along my StandardShaderEdit, or by itself. I don't know of any potentially incompatible mods. As usual, do report if you find one. (Also, sorry for all the copy pasting in this post and the readme.)
-> Download Everything (but BrighterSims) at SimFileShare
Update: Brighter Sims
A version of the same mod where the light received by Sims is remapped, making them look brighter and flatter. They can only get about half as dark as their vanilla look. The effect is especially noticeable at night, which admittedly isn't optimal. Unlike the added parameters, it'll affect most existing Sims and Pet stuff. Its version of the readme includes an additional page explaining how to edit it, and set different values per material. (This came about when someone asked if the game's lighting could be flattened/made more diffuse. I got curious and ended up tinkering with what was doable via the pixel shader. The existing per-vertex light calculations remain untouched, I just added an additional step on top. Not sure how "aesthetically useful" it'll be to most players :p)

Writing Notes: Positive and Negative Characteristics
Tumblr media
POSITIVE. Mental strength: This ability is acquired by focusing on things under personal command, which reinforces the internal locus of control.
The behaviors that lead to mental strength are identified below (Morin, 2013):
Mentally strong people don’t feel sorry for themselves; instead, they take responsibility for their own life.
Don’t give away their power to others and thus maintain control over their emotions.
Individuals with mental toughness embrace change and are open to being flexible.
Control is placed on things under the person’s influence, such as their attitude.
Pleasing everyone is not a priority. While being kind and fair is important, making everyone happy is not.
There is a motivation for making calculated risks.
Focus on the present and make plans for the future.
Try to make better decisions in the future and try not to repeat previous missteps.
Demonstrate an ability to appreciate and celebrate the success of other people.
Don’t give up after a failure; instead, they keep trying until they get it right.
Tolerate being alone and staying in silence.
Don’t feel that the world owes them something; instead, they create opportunities for themselves by utilizing their own talents and merits.
Real change takes time, and mentally strong individuals understand this, so they’re patient.
These behaviors are positively supported by characteristics such as:
Tenacity: not giving up when things get tough or when problems arise
Confidence: belief in personal ability to find solutions to challenges
Optimism: the perception that the odds are in one’s favor
Adaptability: openness to new inputs and ideas
Self-Awareness: the ability to shift perspective
Reliability: following through with promises and goals
Responsibility: owning up to personal mistakes and errors
Wellbeing: making personal mental and physical health a priority
These and other characteristics help contribute to strong mental health (Half, 2016).
Tumblr media
NEGATIVE. The opposite of open-minded, calm, conscientious, and agreeable characteristics are those defined by judgment, neuroticism, and an external locus of control. Some behaviors that fall into this category are:
Inability to accept setbacks
Lack of clarity and decision-making
Low capacity for critical thinking
Failing to build strong interpersonal relations
Always staying in the comfort zone
Helplessness and absence of persistence
Tendency to lean toward pessimism
Weak imagination and an inability to visualize desired outcomes
(Cardone, 2011)
Individuals with high scores in neuroticism often display narcissism, have inflated egos, and are emotionally distant, angry, hostile, and inflexible. These people tend to display the behaviors above.
Yet one key preventer of such negative traits, according to some studies, is self-control. “The more conscientious or prudent people are–no matter their other characteristics–the less likely they’ll be drawn toward harmful or illegal activities” (Chamorro-Premuzic, 2016).
Therefore, by increasing one’s self-awareness, individuals can spot their shortcomings and adopt habits to help balance out their personality traits. In turn, this helps them thrive.

I'm not super informed on the subject but I think part of the problem is that SVG is like nine formats at once, one of which is animated and thus requires some kind of scripting (JS being available and "flexible") to implement potentially complex motion (among other things).
We could lose the scripting and go for an APNG- or GIF-type approach but then we'd also lose one of SVG's benefits: theoretically infinite resolution in both space and time.
Desperately need a sane, standardized vector graphics format which is
Supported by browsers
But can't embed javascript
Is this too much to ask for? I'm going crazy here.

Fiat Lingua Top 10 for 2024
It's time for the annual Fiat Lingua rewind!
Background: I created Fiat Lingua over ten years ago with the idea that it could be something like the Rutgers Optimality Archive: A place where conlangers could post work that they wanted to showcase, or work that was in progress. We've had tons of contributions over the years, and some standout work I'm really proud of.
Using our fancy statistics program (you know, the free version) we're able to determine the top 10 visited posts for this year (though, note, the numbers for the current year's December post will always be down a little bit, since it didn't have a full month. If you'd like to take a look at it, Carl Buck created a new workable orthography for Klingon from the original!). Here they are!
NUMBER 10
We have a tie...
"A Naming Language" (November, 2016) by Jeffrey Henning: A fantastic (and short!) essay about how to create a conlang sketch (or naming language) specifically aimed at authors. The author, Jeffrey Henning, was the most important person in conlanging from the 90s through the mid-2000s before his seminal website, Langmaker.com, died.
"Down with Morphemes: The Pitfalls of Concatenative Morphology" (March, 2014) by David J. Peterson: Honestly, I'm touched. And baffled. Why this paper, published ten years ago which hasn't touched the top ten the past two years, is suddenly on it is absolutely beyond me.
NUMBER 9
"Afrihili: An African Interlanguage" (April, 2014) by William S. Annis: Afrihili is an a posteriori auxlang from the late 60s that uses Bantu languages as its source. If you haven't read about it, you must. This article took sixth place the past two years, but this year dropped to ninth!
NUMBER 8
"Tone for Conlangers: A Basic Introduction" (April, 2018) by Aidan Aannestad: This is the third time this article has been in the top 10, but it slipped one place to number 8. Conlangers continue to find this introduction to tone quite valuable.
NUMBER 7
"Names Aren’t Neutral: David J. Peterson on Creating a Fantasy Language" (March, 2019) by David J. Peterson: Down two spots from last year, this is my article on best practices when coming up with names in a fantasy setting—even when no conlang is present.
NUMBER 6
"Introduction, A Note on the Terminology and Linguistic Methodology of This Paper, and Section I" (February, 2012) by Madeline Palmer: So...this came out of nowhere. This was an early series that helped me avoid having to do a bunch of work for Fiat Lingua in the early years. I was grateful for the runway! I have no idea why, after more than ten years, the dragon language Srínawésin is now getting attention after getting next to none in the past, but…it's getting attention—in a big way. Anyone know why?
NUMBER 5
"Patterns of Allophony" (April, 2015) by William S. Annis: Definitely one of the most popular papers on Fiat Lingua, William illustrates graphically a number of very common sound changes. This article has been at #3 the past two years but tumbled two spots this year to #5.
NUMBER 4
"Hieroglyphs of Fneise" (April, 2024) by Jason Lynn: New to Fiat Lingua this year and new to the top ten, everyone loved this new article about the hieroglyphs of Fneise, created by Jason Lynn, friend of LangTime Studio!
NUMBER 3
"A Conlang-Venture: A Select-A-Feature Adventure" (January, 2024) by Jessie Peterson: This MAMMOTH .pdf is honestly one of the greatest conlang achievements ever. Clocking in at over 700 pages, Jessie created a hyperlinked choose-your-own-adventure demonstration of how to evolve a naturalistic conlang. This document is nothing short of amazing.
NUMBER 2
"Grambank & Language Documentation: Zhwadi and Its Features" (June, 2023) by Jessie Peterson: Even her massive conlang-venture .pdf couldn't top her incredible resource from last year. This is a short description of how to use Grambank in conlanging with a link to a fillable Google spreadsheet any conlanger can copy and use to introduce their conlang to others. Last year this made #4 on the list, and this year it jumped two spots!
And now for the top viewed article for 2024 on Fiat Lingua...
NUMBER 1
"A Conlanger's Thesaurus" (September, 2014) by William S. Annis: The king is back! Last year my article on how to create a surreal conlang took the top spot. This year? Not even in the top THIRTY! It's like it was wiped off the face of the internet! Whether it's top spot or not, though, William Annis's resource on how to create unique words with unique interrelationships and associations has proved useful to conlangers of all stripes. As a reference work, it is unparalleled in terms of usefulness modulo brevity.
* * * * *
And that's it for 2024! I'm looking forward to posting more conlang articles next year. If you are a conlanger, a conlang-researcher, or conlang fan who has something to say in .pdf format about a specific conlang or conlanging in general, please consider submitting something to Fiat Lingua! We take any and all articles related to conlanging in whatever form you have them. I'm also happy to help you think up ideas, or refine those ideas you have. There is no strong review like in a fancy journal: I just want to get what you have up. I'm especially in interested in hosting personal conlang stories—stories about how or why you started to create a language, or your experience creating your own language—personal stories that are often lost, but are so vital, as there is an absolute dearth of literature about conlangers! If you think you have even the seed of an idea, please get a hold of me! I want to share as many stories and ideas as I can.
