Every single origin character in Baldur's Gate 3 reflects the major themes and narrative points of the story. Every single one of them.

Your frustration with parts of the fandom or with plot holes or content loss with specific characters has you over analyzing the story to the point that you now think there isn't one.

For the love of God, try exploring what excites you. Try posting about what you're enjoying. Make your own media critique about its failings because it's enriching and rewarding to do so. You will not win an award for being the most correct fan and you will not make up a way to devalue a specific character so good it fixes what you feel was lacking for your current favorite.

And while I'm here with my pettest of peeves, if you have a deep hatred for one of those characters maybe take a lap and ask yourself if you're particularly prejudiced towards/triggered by specific trauma behaviors. What many of y'all think is righteousness is in fact ableism. If you cannot suspend ableism and stretch empathy in the fictional dragon brain worms game, then where can you?

VERSION ONE:

taako turns into a cat sometimes, kravitz is very affectionate about it but also Taako He Swears To God (i actually made a post about this a million years ago, where sometimes taako just. polymorphs into a cat and flops in kravitz's lap when he needs a bit of physical reassurance but can't quite articulate it...mmm)

taako is also a fucking menace and the more recently he's been a cat the more likely he is to fully give into the impulse, already barely restrained, of just knocking glasses off of tables, biting people, taking shiny things and keeping them forever, and so on

he especially likes to climb on kravitz's shoulders in cat form and rub against kravs stubble <3

VERSION 2WO:

Hello! I stumbled across your old post, "The Top Four Things I Don’t Like About Big Finish" and reading it in 2023 was quite something. And now "Unbound" IS back, as you hoped, but.. it's just Time War Again Oh And Nick Briggs Doing Daleks Again. Sigh.

Finally, someone recognizes my genius!

At some point after writing that post I discovered that they did actually release box-sets with Strax in them and took some psychic damage. In hindsight I was a tad dramatic, although I kind of expect that for things I wrote seven years ago. For the record I eventually tried "Expiry Dating" and enjoyed it, although I still think box-sets are not the way to go.

I wonder if Big Finish writers find it harder now, it seems like the constraints are only adding up because of the medium. On TV the props and costumes and minor details have to be returned eventually, and I think the EU became a sustainable force because it was able to use print, audio and comics to undo that limitation. In other words, it actually added something to Doctor Who by treating its appearance-of-a-universe as a deeper 'textual' reality in a way one used to get only via conversation with other fans. (C.f. the bit in "FANZ" where LM speaks of the pre-video-era Target novelizations as 'like our memories of what the program was, but made more intense'.)

The problem is a lot of the show's methods for refreshing itself aren't available in audio. The Doctor is never going to regenerate in one of these stories, for example, and any aspect of the character that gets drawn out can only be returned to in terms of its place in the grand tree of continuity. Likewise for any other character with enough marketability or just multi-story narrative impact. If you matter in Big Finish's cosmology you can only stop mattering by the conclusion of some arc; for the purposes of what stories should be told, you're considered to be in constant motion and can't be dealt with 'off-screen'. This works well for a cinematic universe where arcs promote characters to importance in the first place and everything gets reset periodically, but applied to all the inherited material of the DWU it results in too many arcs about too many people who are supposed to be important for reasons other than being interesting and compelling characters.

All that said, my real pettest peeve with Big Finish is that they gave up calling what they made 'audio dramas'. Every time I see the listing on their page I remember being 16 and my dad asking me if I'd only heard that the Doctor's nickname was Theta Sigma in one of my "audiobooks" and I shake my fist at the sky. Theatre is not prose!
