A quickie work-in-progress. I was trying to replicate an old publicity photo using some handy Hasbro and Kenner Star Wars figures from the last 45 years. (Some may be older than me! OK just one may be.) I was trying to replicate an old publicity photo I saw as a kid, see below, of Jabba's Palace in Return of the Jedi.
The playset is the 2023 Hasbro Boba Fett's Throne Room - but the figures are a mix of vintage Kenner, POTF2, Saga, 30th Anniversary Collection, those 5-jointed Rebels-era guys, The Black Series, The Saga Collection, The Vintage Collection, Power of the Jedi, Saga, The Legacy Collection, and my apologies if I forgot to name-check one.
Tumblr media
As you can see, we're close. I probably could've grabbed Hrcheck Kal Fas to stand in for the Saurin. We haven't seen Hasbro try to do the Ugnaughts yet, and I'm not sure who the human creeping in the background is - maybe some guy? I wish we could get a Geezum (Snivvian/Snaggletooth) too.
Looks like I missed Klaatu behind Hermi Odle. Oops. Something for later.

Well, my usual monthly goodies are on hiatus due to touring season, but fortunately, I'm not above posting garage sale finds. So let's have a look at the haul from one sale, aside from a few old tools (they're solid and dirt cheap, I love 'em).
Tumblr media
On the sci-fi end of things, we've got a smattering of SW with a Royal Guard, Endor Rebel Soldier and Anakin Skywalker from the old POTF, and a POTF2 biker scout. The one that came with a speeder bike, and is now left to dance like nobody's watching. A couple of RoboCop's Ultra Police allies (Claw Callahan and Torpedo Thompson) were incidentals in mixed bags, as was Dances With Furries.
Tumblr media
Joes, mostly: nice clean Cobra Commander, Crystal Ball, and the always impressive Dusty. Big Boa has a touch of paint wear, but at least he has thumbs. Unlike Crowbar on the left there, part of The Corps!' 1990 refresh of the original team. That one was a freebie, actually. Who knows, I might find a junker with good arms.
Tumblr media
Hitting the odds and ends before the home stretch, we have a '94 Toy Biz Kingpin (which I forgot to clean up), a small knight figurine, trigger-happy Zbot, unknown Spidey premium (unable to stand without whatever base it came with), functional (!) pull-back 1985 McDonald's car, McDonald's Penguin, BK Gohan, unknown stop sign, and Mystery Diver, who's too small for copyright info, and likely came with a micro playset of some sort.
Tumblr media
On to the meat of things, here's dang ol' Thunderbolt of all things. I'm a huge fan of Tonka's Supernaturals, so naturally this was an easy get. Gotta say, though, these two-channel holograms don't photograph worth a tinker's dam.
Tumblr media
I swear, it's super nice in person. I had no plans for any of the heroes, but now I guess now this guy's accessories are on my list too. I should start a notebook for these things.
Tumblr media
And now, the big one! Psycho, from the Super Gobots subline. All of which were basically straight reissues of Machine Robo DX toys. And that means the Psychoroid from Space Adventure Cobra is a Gobots character. Cobra and Lady Armaroid are still in the car, for Pete's sake. Sorry, the Future Machine. Hey, it looks cool.
Tumblr media
Also cool? The hilariously crude robot mode. The old Machine Robo toys were piloted mecha, so their heads were generally the pilot's seats. As a "guest star" from a slightly older manga, technically the design is late 70s, which really shows in both modes. How sweet it is.

perhaps more meaningful as a metric than ‘i graduated high school 20 years ago in june’ is that in july my ebay account will be 20 years old
twenty years! of buying and selling shit online, starting with a rare trials and tribbleations miles o’brien i found at toysrus, back when there was a toysrus at the mall, and nobody on ebay had digital cameras, or paypal, so transactions took way longer and ran almost entirely on the honor system
my ebay store is older than half the stores in the mall now, damn

Power of the Force, 1995
Accessories: Sawed-Off Blaster Rifle, Jet Pack Appears in: Return of the Jedi
Card Back: The most notorious and fearsome bounty hunter in the galaxy is also the most mysterious. Many legends and stories have arisen over the years, but few facts are known of the man called Boba Fett, or his link to Han Solo’s past. Since the Clone Wars, Fett has worked as a mercenary, a soldier, a personal guard, an assassin, and most frequently, as the most expensive bounty hunter in the known systems.
Fett wears the armor of the Mandalore supercommandos, a group of evil warriors who were defeated by the Jedi Knights during the Clone Wars. Fett had it modified to fit his needs as a bounty hunter. His helmet has a macrobinocular viewplate, motion and sound sensors, infrared capabilities, an internal comlink with his ship, the Slave I, and a broadband antenna for intercepting and decoding transmissions. His wrist gauntlets house lasers, a miniature flame projector, and a fibercord whip/grappling device. On his back, a powerful jet pack also houses a turbo-projected magnetic grappling hook with a 20 meter lanyard. Worn over his dirty flightsuit, Fett’s equipment includes knee-pad rocket rocket dart launchers, spiked boots, and a concussion grenade. Braided Wookiee scalps hang over his right shoulder, and a BlasTech EE_3 rifle makes sure no one argues with him. Fearless, methodical, and as unpredictable as the shifting sands of Tatooine, Fett has worked for numerous ganglords, including Jabba the Hutt. He was working for Jabba when a call for bounty hunters was received from the Empire, Fett tracked down his old nemesis, Han Solo, for Darth Vader, and was rewarded with the smuggler’s body, frozen in carbonite.
For us 12 year olds of the day Boba Fett was the definition of cool. Mysterious, deadly and, thanks to his return in Dark Empire, full of potential. It didn’t matter how he went out in Return of the Jedi; this was a character that provided an instant gateway to Star Wars adventure.
All this meant his toy was in high demand. Yet when my friends and I did finally manage to snag one, it wasn’t quite the score we’d hoped for…

Tumblr media
First, the good. Boba Fett looks incredible, with a full palette of colour representing his on-screen appearance. The detailed paint work was a game changer for the time, with the scratches on his armour selling the look of worn metal. Even more impressive are the tampos that accent his breastplate, shoulder guard and helmet. As far as paint apps go, Hasbro nailed it.
Then there are the removable features. Fett’s cape and wookiee braids are cast as one piece that clips around his neck, while his jetpack clips on to a protruding slot on his back. These pieces, (along with Fett’s sawn-off shotgun) add a lot of fun factor to the toy.
Tumblr media
Yet the execution isn’t all there. The backpack and cape pieces add a bit of bulk to Fett’s stature – and extra bulk is one thing he could do without.
Hasbro’s super-heroic approach to Star Wars mostly got a pass from me, but there were some figures that stood out even back then. Unfortunately, Boba Fett was one. While his barrel chest could be explained by his armour, Fett’s silhouette loses all proportion with the addition of his backpack and cape. When that look combines with an awkward step-forward stance that has proven tricky to balance since 1995, it becomes clear that Fett doesn’t live up to the potential of his paint apps.
Much like the character in the films.
All in all the 1995 Boba Fett is a fun and sturdy toy, but not much of a modern display piece. Pretty much a perfect encapsulation of the early waves of POTF2, then.

A lot of the figures from The Force Awakens are pretty cheap, but Admiral Ackbar shot up a bit. Which is a pity for you if you missed him. It's a 5-jointed figure, sort of. The neck doesn't quite move, but the jaw does - which is fun. (You can also get Admiral Raddus from this era.) As a 3 3/4-inch figure with only a few joints, a lot of fans will tell you he sucks and you shouldn't bother. These fans are wrong. (Mostly. You can get the reissue of The Vintage Collection figure for around $13, and the POTF2 one can still be had for five bucks.)
This old figure has pretty great construction with a hard plastic torso and limbs that swing forward well. He has a gun - he probably shouldn't have one, he doesn't blast anybody - and a big goofy backpack that's actually pretty fun. I love the costume's texture, and being able to make him talk with that opening mouth is a fun feature too. Hasbro doesn't use it very much - heck, neither did Kenner. If you see this one for a fair price, I'd say grab him because he's fun.
