I Investigate: Are Inflatable Paddle Boards Good for Paddling?
What if the best tool for gliding across lakes or riding gentle waves isn’t what you’ve always assumed? For years, I dismissed air-filled SUPs as flimsy toys—until a friend challenged my bias. That moment sparked a deep dive into their real-world performance, durability, and versatility. After testing 12 models and analyzing over 200 user reviews, I discovered surprising truths. Portable designs…

Stay Put
Gary Snyder from the Upriver/Downriver newsletter Number 10, circa 1991, as shared by Nam Henderson:
Without further rhetoric or utopian scheming, I have a simple suggestion that if followed would begin to bring wilderness, farmers, people, and the economies back. That is: don’t move. Stay still. Once you find a place that feels halfway right, and it seems time, settle down with a vow not to move any more. Then, take a look at one place on earth, one circle of people, on realm of beings over time, conviviality and maintenance will improve. School boards and planning commissions will have better people on them, and larger and more widely concerned audiences will be attending. Small environmental issues will be attended to. More voters will turn out, because local issues at least make a difference, can be won—and national scale politics too might improve, with enough folks getting out there. People begin to really notice the plants, birds, stars, when they see themselves as members of a place. Not only do they begin to work the soil, they go out hiking, explore the back country or the beach, get on the Freddies’ ass for mismanaging Peoples’ land, and doing that as locals counts! Early settlers, old folks, are valued and respected, we make an effort to learn their stories and pass it on to our children, who will live here too. We look deeply back in time to the original inhabitants, and far ahead to our own descendants, in the mind of knowing a context, with its own kind of tools, boots, songs. Mainstream thinkers have overlooked it: real people stay put. And when things are coasting along ok, they can also take off and travel, there’s no delight like swapping stories downstream. Dont Move! I’d say this really works because here on our side of the Sierra, Yuba river country, we can begin to see some fruits of a mere fifteen years’ inhabitation, it looks good.
Nam resurfaced that in response to maya weeks, who writes:
I almost never feel that I am doing enough, unless I’m burying my body in sand at the beach or paddling over a set with my mouth full of salt or building electric fence for sheep (which I have only done twice) or performing. But I have spent my entire adult life and most of my childhood defining myself by what I do: I’m a writer, I’m an artist, I’m an activist, I’m an environmental justice worker, etc., etc., etc. And as it turns out I have done kind of a lot of things even though of the 3 books I have written I haven’t published a single one; and I still don’t manage a flock of sheep, let alone any land; and I haven’t done a performance since like the beginning of last year; and I’m on some kind of weird hiatus from surfing while I do a bunch of work (namely, environmental justice advocacy and writing and training as a shepherd and figuring out how I am going to have a long-term relationship to land I care about) and now that my job is not getting the Environmental Protection Agency grant we put in so much work to apply for last fall I am back on the job market again (if you have any leads on environmental communications jobs I might be a fit for, please send them my way; thank you!) and that too takes time. But in the course of getting a lot of things done, I’ve sacrificed a lot. I’ve sacrificed stability. I still don’t have a retirement account even though I’m in my mid-30s. I’ve lived in a few different countries and many different towns and cities. My close friends are all over the place. I just moved yet again, and I still don’t have a dining table. Most of all, I’ve sacrificed time with loved ones. I’m an energetic person by nature. I half-joke that it runs in my family (the other half of me is dead serious). I can’t stand to see a goal unfulfilled. And what I am recognizing, at this historical moment that we are all living through whether we like it or not, is that that means I need to reorient my goals a little. So that they are less about doing, and more about being. About being stable. About being outside. About being around those I love.
And both of those remind me of something from Frank Bures that I posted here a long time ago:
[I]t may be wiser to try to create the place you want to live, rather than to keep trying to find it.
Given all that and maya’s emphasis on being, I am also re-reading my notes and collection titled “Who are you now?” where I will also be adding a pointer to this collection.

way too long ankle thoughts
I have had fairly weak ankles for a pretty long time - I sprained one pretty badly in my senior year of high school and then kept respraining it for... at least a year after? Then I sprained my other ankle in college and made a hobby of respraining it, then I - a couple years(?) later want on one run that I went on often and ended up with acute tendinitis that became long-lasting-mystery-ankle-affliction, which lasted me more or less from 2021 to 2024 in ebbs and flows of "I think it's getting better this time" / "agh one slightly-too-long-hike set me back months again". And it's more or less much better now! Not 100%, but measurably improved (the last "I think it might be better this time!" I was topping out at 6 miles on flat ground, and I did 12 with a little elevation a few weekends ago).
Throughout these, the doctor's appointments were of middling use. I'd say a 30/30/40 mix of "making it better", "making it actively worse", and "mystifying and useless". I tried physical therapy - this did seem to help lead to improvement, but I attribute this largely to (1) having done quite a bit of research before my first visit and arriving with "The doctor said I have X, so I tried all these different exercises and stretches and I'm still getting pain" and (2) a physical therapist can be seen for an hour at a time for several weeks in a row and this makes them more vulnerable to interrogation than the average US MD, who will see you for 15 minutes of a 30-minute appointment a month from now if you're lucky. The physical therapist was also about a 70% useless woo/30% useful mix, but the duration meant that 30% was pretty impactful.
As far as I can tell, the things that worked for me were
Strengthening the ankle with various exercises like calf raises, resistance band thingamabobs, etc. A lot of these felt really easy when I looked up "exercises for ankle strength" - there are ways to modify them to make them more challenging. My understanding is that a healing ligament can't heal tightly and a sprained ankle benefits from having stronger muscles to help hold it more in place.
Balance exercises - not just standing on one foot, but doing one-foot calf raises, using a balance board/bosu ball, doing one-leg squats and such that require balance through the range of motion, etc. Messing around with my sister's slackline. Roller blading. This has to do with the proprioception thing, as far as I know.
Strengthening and stretching the muscles of the foot itself. This - I think - was the breakthrough for my particular situation. With all the staying-off-my-ankle, there were a bunch of foot muscles that help with stabilization that got very weak with disuse.
Strength stuff for hips and knees as well.
(for all the exercises, I really can't give a recommendation. Absolutely not a doctor. What I can say is that I got frustrated early about things being too easy or too hard - but almost anything can be modified to add or subtract difficulty, and I do have a decent mental catalog of the variations that I've done.)
Using hiking poles. What would have been a minor rolled ankle pre-sprain would become a re-sprain - poles helped me head off several re-sprains.
Wearing a lace-up ankle brace (from the pharmacy, like $20, nothing fancy) that helped prevent re-sprains in situations where poles wouldn't cut it or didn't apply.
Actually doing the boring exercises and shit. This was a very difficult thing even with a burning desire to banish ankle problems entirely. I had a lot more success tacking them on to the end of other exercise; dedicating solely ankle time was (is) anathema to my attention span. Small things that helped: Finding things which target some weak areas (balance, ankles, knees, hips) that aren't boring as fuck (stand up paddle board [when available], roller blades, biking, climbing, even regular gym exercises that use balance, etc). Having a buddy for accountability. Taking 20 min to get outside and do things before work. being unemployed for a couple months. leaving resistance bands out in view so I remember they exist. going on hikes and walking on my toes. walking weirdly around town (on heels, on toes, with funky stride). doing the exercises between routes at the climbing gym. standing on one foot while working. etc etc etc.
but yeah, part of what spurred my photography hobby was needing to sit down while other people hiked. might as well appreciate the beauty and look at bugs while you're waitin'

Paddle Boarding Safety on Small Rivers

birdislandoutfitters.com | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube
Spring time is here and summer is just around the corner! What does that mean?!!! It’s time to hit the water! And this time of year provides wonderful opportunities for small river paddling.
Paddle boarding on small rivers can be an exhilarating experience, offering a unique opportunity to explore nature’s beauty and enjoy a super peaceful adventure. However, like any water-based activity, it’s essential to prioritize safety in order to ensure an enjoyable and accident-free outing. In this blog post, I’m going to outline key safety guidelines to follow while paddle boarding on these wonderful, and sometimes intimidating, small rivers. I’ll be covering equipment, preparation, and on-water practices among other tidbits.
Before we jump into the deep end here, I need to go over hydrodynamics, ie. what makes a small river tick, so to speak. Understanding these nuances provides valuable insight into the intricate workings of these vital water bodies.
Small rivers are vital components of our natural landscape, playing a crucial role in the hydrological cycle and supporting diverse ecosystems. To gain a deeper appreciation of these water bodies, it is important to understand the hydrodynamics governing their flow patterns and features. Some of the few key elements of small rivers which include flow velocity, hydraulic features, channel morphology, erosion, sediment transport and deposition. While all of these contribute to the unique characteristics and functions of small rivers, I’ll only briefly outline the first three:
Flow Velocity
Flow velocity is a fundamental aspect of small river hydrodynamics. It refers to the speed at which water moves within the river channel. The velocity is influenced by various factors, including the gradient or slope of the river, the volume of water, and the presence of obstacles or constraints. In general, flow velocity tends to be faster in steeper sections and slower in wider, shallower areas.

Channel Morphology
The shape and morphology of the river channel significantly impact its hydrodynamics. Small rivers often exhibit diverse channel forms, including straight reaches, meandering sections, and braided channels. Meandering channels, characterized by gentle bends and curves, are common in small rivers. These meanders create a complex flow pattern, with faster currents occurring on the outer side of the bend and slower velocities on the inner side.
Hydraulic Features
Small rivers exhibit various hydraulic features that result from the interaction between the flowing water and the riverbed. These features include riffles, pools, eddies, and backwaters. Riffles are shallow areas characterized by a rocky or gravelly riverbed, where water flows faster and creates surface disturbances. Pools, on the other hand, are deeper sections with slower flow velocities. Eddies are circular currents that form behind obstructions such as rocks or bends, while backwaters are calm areas sheltered from the main flow.
Now, let’s get into the Equipment you’ll need.
Selecting a Paddle Board
When paddle boarding on small rivers, opt for a stable and durable board specifically designed for calm waters. A wider board with ample buoyancy will provide better stability and maneuverability. Inflatable paddle boards are super popular these days. They’re fantastic for rivers. They’re basically a whitewater raft in a smaller package.
Recommendation (gratuitous plug): Bird Island Outfitters is one of the only companies out there that offers an inflatable paddle board with supplemental pontoons. It’s uber-stable and handles rapids like a champ. It’s also durable. This type of board is the best of all worlds when it comes to river paddling! Because it’s inflatable, getting to and from the river is a breeze.

Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
It’s recommended that you always wear a properly fitting PFD or life jacket while paddle boarding. At least you should have one secured to the board and easy to get to. There are a ton of options out there when it comes to PFDs. It’s important that yours is approved by appropriate safety authorities and designed for water sports. I like my PFD’s to have pockets for storing essential items like a river knife, sunscreen, etc. A bright color is never a bad idea either. It’s much easier to spot a bright color in the water if you happen to go swimming!

Leash
Attach a leash to your ankle or calf and secure it to the board. This will prevent the board from drifting away if you fall off, allowing you to easily retrieve it.
Helmet
Consider wearing a helmet and appropriate protective clothing, especially in areas with potential obstacles such as rocks or low-hanging branches.
Bow Line
Having a line (rope) attached to the front of your board can be helpful if you make a pitstop and need to secure the board while you’re away from it. You can also use the line to drag it while in shallow water. It’s an easy addition and one that’ll, no doubt, come in handy.
Anchor
It’s not a must have, but you may want one if you’re fishing or plan to stop often without getting off the board. Many outfitters offer small anchors for kayaks for a nominal cost. The old DIY makeshift anchor (rock + rope) always works in a pinch!

Pump
A must if you’re using an inflatable paddle board. No one wants to hear the dreaded “psssssssst”. But, punctures do happen. Rivers sometimes have sharp rocks, thorny bushes on the banks, paranha, rebar, sharp sticks, etc. Don’t be a fool. Bring a pump!
River Knife
A knife on a river trip is not a weapon, but an crucial tool in your boating kit. Not only could it be used for food prep, it can be used for quick field repairs. There are lots of ropes when it comes to river trips. A person could get entangled in a rope or snagged by their PFD webbing. The best river knives have a blunt point. The blunt tip will prevent knives that randomly pop out from embedding in boats or worse…soft tissue on someone’s body. And, always make sure it’s readily available… maybe securely attached to your PFD.

Water Shoes
Water shoes with tough soles are another must. You may not want them on all the time, but if you have to portage or jump off into questionable substrate for any reason, you’ll be glad you brought them. As a former whitewater raft guide, I’ve always liked Chaco sandals with the toe loop (for added security). But, neoprene wading booties are great too. It’s really up to you.

Water Hat
Need a say more. Personally, I like to use surf hats with chin straps when I’m on the river. Losing my hat is just not an option!

Sunscreen
Use bio-degradable sunscreen (less harmful to the environment) to protect against harmful UV rays. And remember to reapply on those long outings!
Pre-checks! Muy Importante.
Check Weather and River Conditions
Before heading out, consult local weather forecasts and river conditions. Avoid paddle boarding during severe weather conditions, strong currents, or when water levels are unusually high. This is especially important in the Spring depending on where you are. If you happen to be in the mountains, be mindful of snow runoff… especially on those warmer Spring and early Summer days.
Familiarize Yourself with the River
Research and gather information about the river you plan to paddle board on. Be aware of any potential hazards, including underwater obstacles, rapids, or sections with strong currents.
Inform Others
Inform a reliable person about your paddle boarding plans, including your intended route, estimated time of departure and return, and emergency contact details. This will ensure that someone is aware of your whereabouts and can take appropriate action if necessary.
Let’s Go Over On-Water Safety
Buddy System
Whenever possible, paddle with a partner. Having someone with you significantly increases safety and provides assistance in case of an emergency.
Start Slow and Gradual
Begin by paddle boarding on calm and slow-moving sections of the river. Practice basic paddling techniques and familiarize yourself with the board’s stability and maneuverability before attempting more challenging areas.
Maintain Situational Awareness
Always be attentive to your surroundings while paddle boarding. Observe the flow of the river, anticipate any upcoming obstacles or hazards, and maintain distance from other watercraft or swimmers.
Respect Wildlife and Environment
Avoid disturbing wildlife and respect the natural environment. Keep a safe distance from nesting areas, refrain from littering, and adhere to any local regulations regarding protected species or areas.
Stay Hydrated
Bring an adequate supply of drinking water to stay hydrated during your paddle boarding excursion. Dehydration can negatively impact your performance and decision-making abilities.
Practice Fall Recovery
Small rivers often have rapids. They can be a ton of fun to negotiate. They can also be treacherous. Falling off your paddle board is okay. Not only is it okay, it will happen… especially if you’re a beginner. Practice falling away from the board to prevent injuries caused by landing on it. Learn proper fall recovery techniques to quickly get back on the board.

Be Cautious of Strainers
Strainers are objects like fallen trees or branches that can trap and obstruct the flow of water. Be cautious of these hazards, as they can pose a serious risk to paddle boarders and kayakers. Stay alert and avoid areas with visible strainers. If you happen to find yourself swimming, keep your feet facing down river. As you approach the strainer, turn your body so you’re facing the strainer head on. Then, with the momentum of the current, push yourself over the strainer as you come into contact with it. Best scenario, avoid them at all costs!
No matter what you do on the river, the peaceful energy of these life giving systems can play a beneficial role in your general well being, both mentally and physically. If you choose to experience these places with a paddle board, good on ya!!! Paddle boarding is such a unique way to connect with nature and experience the power and the tranquility of these waters. By adhering to the safety guidelines outlined in this essay, you should be able to minimize the inherent risks involved while ensuring a happy, healthy and full experience on the water!

Essential First Time Surfing Advice: What Every Beginner Needs to Know
Ready to catch your first wave? Surfing is a water sport that's equal parts physical exercise, ocean familiarity, and the pure rush of sliding down a wave. As thrilling as it can be, having your first surfing experience without instruction can be intimidating.
This first-timer's guide to surfing will give you the necessary first-time surfing tips to set yourself up for success, safety, and fun in the water.
Choose the Right Surfboard for Beginners
When starting, there is a need to choose the right surfboard. Soft-top longboards, ideally 8 to 9 feet, should be the ones that a beginner chooses. They offer more stability and buoyancy, hence it becomes easier to balance and catch small waves.
Avoid shortboards initially—they may seem cool, but are way more difficult to control. Your top pick for learning the basics of paddling, popping up, and balancing is a large, fat board with a rounded nose.
Want more help choosing gear? Explore our surfboard guide to find the best board for your summer session.
Take a Surf Lesson
One of the smartest first-time surfing tips is to take at least one professional lesson. Certified surf instructors teach proper techniques, ocean safety, and wave etiquette in a controlled, beginner-friendly environment. A good instructor can shorten your learning curve dramatically and help prevent bad habits or injuries.
If it is not possible to take a lesson, look into observing beginner surf lessons or surfing with a guest surfer who will teach you the fundamentals.

Pick the Right Beach and Conditions
Not all surfing locations are suitable for beginners. Look for a beach with soft, rolling waves and a sandy bottom. Steer clear of locations with powerful rips, rocky reefs, or big, fast-breaking waves until you get some experience.
Check surf forecasts daily to locate beginner-friendly conditions—a perfect wave size is 1 to 2 feet. Require beaches with surf schools or on-duty lifeguards, at least for your initial sessions.
Learn Surf Etiquette
Surfing also has its own set of unwritten rules to ensure everyone stays safe and cheerful. Some points are:
Don't drop in: Never ride a wave that someone else has already ridden.
Respect the lineup: Wait your turn and paddle around others to catch more waves, but do not.
Hold on to your board: Be in control of your board at all times to avoid injuring yourself or others.
Surf etiquette knowledge is as important as learning how to surf.
Practice the Pop-Up on Land
Practice the pop-up on sand before entering the water. This is standing up from a position of lying on the board in one motion. Practicing this on sand helps to build muscle memory and gives confidence in the water.
A simple pop-up is as follows:
Lie down, hands underneath your chest.
Push with arms.
Bring the back foot up first.
Stand up in a low, balanced position.
Use the Right Surf Gear
Besides a beginner surfboard, other equipment you'll be using to surf is:
Wetsuit: So that you'll be warm and sun- and scratch-protected.
Leash: So the board won't get away from you.
Wax: So you don't slip off.
Ensure that your equipment is in good shape and appropriate for the water temperature and conditions.
Start in Whitewater
Don't be afraid to paddle out past large waves. Practice in whitewater—the broken-up waves near shore. They are simpler to catch up with and ideal for practicing paddle, popping up, and balance.
When you get used to whitewater, you can move on to unbroken waves more confidently.
Final Thoughts
Your first surfing experience should be one to remember for all the right reasons. With the correct board, beach, and state of mind, you'll be ready to go into your first surfing experience with a good and quality learning experience.
Take this first-time surfing tip, and you'll be surfing on your board in the waves in no time.

A Guide to Stand-Up Paddling in the Maldives
Ranked among the world's top destinations for stand-up paddling, the Maldives is a must-visit hotspot for water sports fans. Offering idyllic conditions for experienced SUP surfers as well as beginners, the archipelago is also one of the safest locations to pick up this adrenalin-pumping water-bound activity. Here's everything holidaymakers need to know to enjoy a SUP experience in the paradise islands.

Best Time to Go Stand-Up Paddling
If you're visiting the Maldives to enjoy stand-up paddle boarding, it's crucial to time your visit to coincide with the best weather conditions for this activity. The months between March and October are considered the ideal time to engage in SUP adventures in the Maldives as the peak swell season falls during the month of August. This is the official winter period for the Southern Hemisphere, when waves can reach impressive heights of up to 3m.
How to Choose the Perfect Board
As one of the most popular outdoor activities in the Maldives, you will find that there are plenty of water sports tour operators and rental shops providing SUP boards so suit different needs. Divided into 3 main categories, SUP board varieties include touring boards, surfing boards and all-around boards. All-around boards are the widest and most stable, while Surf SUP boards tend to be narrow and short. First-timers should find an All-around SUP board that suits their size, which is determined by one's weight and height. As a rule of thumb, the board should be 6 inches higher than your height. Although SUP boards also come in a variety of shapes, beginners should opt for one with a round tail and nose, as these are easier to manoeuvre and provide more stability.

Top Spots for SUP in the Maldives
Beginners looking to get their feet wet will find that the North Male Atoll is home to some of the best surf spots in the Maldives. Stand-up paddleboarders with some experience, however, will also find the Sultans, Cokes, Jailbreaks And Chicken's off the coast of North Male Atoll islands perfect for their skill set. Travellers based in South Male Atoll resorts, including Holiday Inn Kandooma, however, will find that some of the best breaks in the region are right on their doorstep. Kandooma Right is arguably the finest SUP surf spot in this part of the country which is also known to offer paddleboarders their fair share of Riptides, Twin Peaks and Quarters. Those on the lookout for Lohis and Ninja breaks, on the other hand, should explore SUP hotspots around Thulusdhoo Island.
Safety Guidelines
Whether you're signing up for a SUP tour via some of the best hotels in the Maldives or a private tour operator, personal safety should be a top priority when engaging in water sports in the Maldives. Water sports activities such as stand-up paddleboarding should not be attempted during bad weather or rough tidal conditions, and a life jacket must be strapped on at all times. Checking whether the leash is attached to your ankle is also essential, as it will help you stay buoyant even if you fall off the board. It's also important to leave stand-up paddle yoga practices to professionals, as only seasoned surfers should attempt this activity.

Stand Up Paddleboard Market Analysis Trends and Growth
The stand-up paddleboard (SUP) market has seen substantial growth over the past few years and is expected to continue expanding, driven by the increasing popularity of outdoor recreational activities, a rising focus on fitness, and consumer interest in water sports. The rise of stand-up paddleboarding as a fitness trend and its ability to cater to a broad demographic of all ages and skill levels has made it one of the most rapidly growing water-based activities worldwide. The market includes various types of boards, from inflatable to hard-shell designs, as well as accessories like paddles, life jackets, and leashes.
Market Growth Drivers
The growth of the stand-up paddleboard market can be attributed to several factors, starting with its accessibility. Unlike traditional surfing, paddleboarding can be enjoyed by individuals with minimal experience in water sports, allowing for quicker adoption among beginners. Additionally, the relatively low entry cost compared to other water sports equipment contributes to its growing appeal. The ability to practice paddleboarding on various water bodies, from calm lakes to rivers and even oceans, has also enhanced its popularity.
Another significant driver of market growth is the increasing awareness of the health benefits associated with stand-up paddleboarding. Paddleboarding is a full-body workout that improves balance, core strength, and cardiovascular health. As more consumers focus on fitness and outdoor activities as part of their wellness routines, SUP has emerged as an attractive option for both recreational and fitness enthusiasts.
Product Types and Innovations
In the stand-up paddleboard market, two primary categories dominate: inflatable SUPs and rigid (hard-shell) SUPs. Inflatable SUPs are particularly popular due to their portability and ease of storage, making them ideal for individuals with limited space or those who want to travel with their boards. They are also more affordable compared to rigid SUPs, attracting price-sensitive customers. Inflatable boards have made significant strides in terms of performance, with advancements in materials and design that enhance their stability and durability.
Rigid SUPs, on the other hand, offer superior performance, especially for experienced paddlers who use their boards for competitive sports or fast water conditions. These boards are typically more stable on the water and provide better tracking and speed, making them a choice for serious paddleboarders.
The market has also seen innovations such as multi-purpose SUPs, which are designed to handle multiple activities, including yoga, fishing, and touring. These multifunctional boards offer versatility and increase the market’s appeal among a wider audience. Electric-powered paddleboards are also beginning to enter the market, providing additional options for those who may prefer a less physically demanding experience.
Geographic Trends
Geographically, North America holds a significant share of the stand-up paddleboard market, largely due to its well-established water sports culture and access to diverse water bodies for paddleboarding. The United States, particularly California, has long been a hotspot for SUP enthusiasts. However, the market is also expanding rapidly in Europe, particularly in coastal areas, and in the Asia-Pacific region, with countries like Australia and New Zealand embracing the sport.

Challenges and Market Restraints
While the stand-up paddleboard market is experiencing growth, there are challenges that manufacturers face. One major restraint is the seasonal nature of paddleboarding, with peak demand occurring in warmer months. This seasonality can affect sales and production volumes, particularly in regions that experience harsh winters.
Additionally, the market faces some competition from other water sports such as kayaking and surfing. While SUP offers unique advantages, such as being easier for beginners to pick up, consumers may be drawn to other activities that require less equipment or are more established in certain regions.
Conclusion
The stand-up paddleboard market is poised for continued growth as the sport gains in popularity across various age groups and geographical regions. With increasing interest in outdoor fitness and wellness activities, SUP offers an accessible and enjoyable way to engage with nature and stay active. As innovations in product design and technology continue to evolve, and as more people embrace the sport, the market for stand-up paddleboards will likely expand and offer new opportunities for manufacturers and consumers alike.

At What Age Should Kids Start Surfing? A Guide for Parents
For kids, learning to surf can boost their confidence, improve their coordination, and connect them with nature. But many parents wonder, “When is the right time for my child to grab a board and hit the waves?” The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every child is different, and factors like their comfort in the water and physical abilities matter more than age. To help you decide, we’ve compiled a guide on when and how to introduce your kids to surfing, including tips on making the experience safe and fun.
What’s the Best Age for Kids to Start Surfing?
Most experts recommend starting kids on a surfboard around age five or six. At this age, many children have developed the strength, coordination, and balance needed to handle basic surfing techniques. However, some surf schools offer children surf lessons for kids as young as four, depending on the child’s comfort level and ability to follow instructions.
If your child is already a strong swimmer and loves being in the water, they might be ready earlier. Conversely, kids who are nervous around waves or are new to the ocean may benefit from waiting a little longer. The key is to make sure they feel safe and excited about learning.
Signs Your Child Is Ready to Surf
Here are some signs your child may be ready to take on the waves:
They’re Comfortable in the Water: Kids should know how to swim and be confident in open water. They don’t need to be experts, but basic swimming skills are essential.
They Follow Directions Well: Surfing requires listening to instructions, especially for safety. If your child can follow directions during activities like swimming lessons, they’re likely ready for a surfing lesson.
They Show Interest in Surfing: If your child is curious about surfing or keeps asking to try it, that’s a great sign they’re motivated and excited.
Starting Small: Building Confidence in the Water
Before hitting the waves, it’s important to help your child get comfortable with the ocean. Spend time playing in shallow water at the beach and riding small waves on a boogie board. These activities build their confidence and give them a sense of how the ocean works. Consider enrolling them in children's surf lessons once they’re ready for the next steps. These lessons are specifically designed for younger surfers, focusing on safety, basic skills, and having fun.
Choosing the Right Gear
For young surfers, having the right gear makes a big difference. A soft-top surfboard is ideal because it’s safer, lighter, and easier for kids to manage. Boards designed for beginners often have a wider shape, which provides better stability. Don’t forget about a well-fitted wetsuit! This keeps kids warm and protected from sunburn and abrasions. A good wetsuit also helps them float, which can boost their confidence.
Safety First
Safety should always be the top priority when introducing your child to surfing. Here are some tips to keep in mind: • Start in Small Waves: Choose a calm beach with gentle, consistent waves. Waikiki, for example, is a fantastic spot for beginner surfers, thanks to its mellow breaks. • Always Supervise: Even if your child is with an instructor, watch them while in the water. • Use Surf Leashes and Life Vests: For younger kids, wearing a life vest can provide extra safety. When you sign up for children's surf lessons, certified instructors will emphasize these safety measures, giving you peace of mind as your child learns.
Benefits of Surfing for Kids
Surfing isn’t just fun—it’s great for kids’ physical and mental development. It improves balance, coordination, and core strength while keeping them active. Surfing also teaches resilience as kids learn to handle wipeouts and try again.
How to Make Surfing Fun for Kids
The goal when teaching kids to surf is to keep it fun and low-pressure. Celebrate their small victories, like standing up on the board for the first time or paddling alone. Avoid pushing them too hard, and let them progress at their own pace.
Group lessons can also be a blast! Learning alongside other kids helps them make friends and creates a positive environment in which to cheer each other on.
Final Thoughts
Surfing is an incredible activity for kids, offering a mix of adventure, exercise, and life lessons. While most kids start around age five or six, the right time ultimately depends on your child’s abilities and enthusiasm.
