Summary:

Harry is struck by a vicious curse that makes him relive his most painful memories. Not trusting the starry-eyed fools who jump at the opportunity to poke inside his mind, Harry’s friends go to Mind Healer Draco Malfoy for help.

They’ve assumed Harry is reliving the war and Voldemort's cruelty, but Draco soon finds the worst moments of Harry's life happened years before he entered the Magical world.

Warnings/contents:

This story is deals with the reliving of past child abuse and depicts emotional, verbal and physical abuse and neglect, as well as Harry's inner trauma and PTSD. There is Legilimency, de-aging, lots of hurt with the subsequent comfort (of the physical and emotional kind), crying, hugs, and a hopeful/happy ending with mutual pining between Draco and Harry.

😍😍😍 OH HOW I LOVE @rockmarina!!! Their writing is pure poetry, it hits me so hard when I read it. Also, did you know English is not her first language? She TRANSLATES her poetic words into english so lazy fuckers like me can read her gorgeous works. Not even to mention how supportive Marina is. Beta-supreme, and also just the nicest person, she regularly messages me pics and thoughts and memes that she knows I’ll enjoy (mostly Neville, unffff) and a consistent cheery voice in the fandom.

Sixteen months after the Battle of Hogwarts, Draco returned to school for his Eighth Year. 

Terrified though he was, he convinced himself he'd push through. He just needed to keep his head down, let everyone and everything pass him by. 

His efforts to go unnoticed lasted all of two weeks. 

“Malfoy,” said a voice behind him in the hall. A deep voice—one he'd recognise anywhere despite its recent change. 

He turned slowly. 

“...Potter.”

They hadn't talked since his trial. Draco glanced up and realised—startled—that Potter had stubble now. 

“We're playing a friendly Quidditch game. If you want to join.” 

Potter didn't hide—didn't need to. He exuded the same easy confidence Draco had always resented. Envied. 

He shook his head, but Potter said, “Malfoy…Draco, please.”

“Why?” he asked, tired. Why are you bothering with me? 

“Because you deserve joy, too,” Potter said, so simply Draco's breath hitched. 

Hesitantly, he nodded.

They'd been playing for hours, both chasing for the same team for a change. 

“Draco!” Potter shouted. 

He whirled around, but all thoughts of the Quaffle vanished as he took in Potter's flat, shirtless chest, muscles flexing as he stretched an arm forward. His smile was bright—his demeanour effortless and more confident than Draco'd ever seen. 

Potter had always stood out. But, Draco realised, Harry shone, his every hue washing Draco's darkness away. 

He didn't think he could ever look away.

“Wouldn't it be funny if this was my last Christmas?” 

Harry's fingers stilled around the wrapping of the gift in his hands. He looked up at Draco, whose gaze was trained on his lap, his own present forgotten on the floor beside him. A strand of hair had fallen from behind his ear and was caressing his cheekbone; Harry tucked it back gently and touched his knuckles to Draco's cheek. 

“I don't think that would be funny at all, no,” he said, worry clear as day in his voice despite his efforts.

“I guess it would still be better than having to spend, like, decades being miserable every Christmas only to die then anyway.” Draco tried to scoff at his words, but pain took over his features, and his eyes fell closed as he leaned into Harry's touch. “Now that would suck.” 

Harry placed his gift on the floor. He scooted closer, coaxed Draco into leaning against him, and held Draco's head firmly against his chest as Draco passed his legs over Harry's and started fidgeting with the hem of Harry's shirt. 

He considered saying something, but Draco talked before he could find the words. 

“I want to be able to enjoy Christmas like I used to,” he said, voice low and shaky. “I want to look forward to big meals with family, and presents, and terrible singing sessions.” 

“I know,” Harry murmured, stroking Draco's hair, nuzzling the top of his head to smell him and kiss him. “I know.” 

A tear fell onto Harry's thigh.

“I hate this.”

“Me too.” Harry held Draco closer, an arm around his waist. “I hate not being able to fix it.”

“You help me,” Draco said, “so much. You always make everything better. You're…” He paused, as if out of breath. “You're wonderful, Harry.”

Harry swallowed, a little bit overwhelmed, a little bit more in love with the boy in his arms. 

“Draco,” he said, hoping somehow the love threatening to overflow his chest would pour out through his voice. “You always help me so much, too. You always make me feel safe when my brain starts to tell me I'm not. You make me so, so happy, Draco.” 

“Even if I'm a sad sack of potatoes?” 

“Even then. In sickness and in health, remember?” 

That coaxed a snigger out of Draco. 

“We're not married yet, you idiot.” 

“Yet,” Harry repeated, his smile widening. “Which means we will be someday. Which means this won't be your last Christmas.” When Draco didn't say anything, but just sighed into Harry's chest, Harry caressed his back in slow circles and added, “I can't promise Christmas will ever feel like it used to. But…” He kissed the top of Draco's head again, rubbed his cheek against it. “Things don't always have to be this bad, okay? They can get better, little by little.”

Draco looked up at him—nodded, a small, tired gesture that made Harry want to hold him impossibly closer until he'd hidden Draco within his very self, where he wouldn't be hurt again, where Harry would always be able to protect him. 

“Can you help me open my presents?” Draco asked after a moment. Harry reached out to grab the one Draco had discarded and proceeded to unwrap it on his lap for Draco to see.

At this point my girlfriend and I don't even have kissing sessions, we just battle for dominance by trying to lick each other's face while also trying to stop the other from tickling us and I think that's beautiful

Heyy, what's your favourite thing about Drarry?

Okay, so first of all, this question is HARD. And by hard I mean I spent like a week staring at this ask in my inbox and then realised there was no way I was coming up with a good enough answer without the help of @paoak. In fact, I would have been a fool to try. So, after an hour long session of brainstorming in the library like the obsessed fools we are, and in no particular order…here’s an incomplete list of our favourite things about Drarry:

- The fandom. The fact that it’s active, and thriving, and that it’s not just content creators that participate in it; that there’s so many fans out there making fic recs, giving stratosferic amounts of love to the creators, organising fests… 

The fandom as a whole is also incredibly open-minded. Like…we have other fandoms that we can’t bother to be so active in online because of the amount of judgement and pettiness and antis in them, but Drarry? Ship and let ship, YKINMKBYKIO… With some exceptions, this is practically all we’ve seen in this community, and that’s honestly so refreshing.

We also love the way problems are faced in the fandom; how so many people explore themes such as sexuality, race, neurodivergence and politics (to name a few) in such a sensitive way, and how we as a community don’t stay quiet in the face poor fandom etiquette, such as not tagging sensitive content properly, reposting or anon hate. Like dude…we’ve got each others’ backs. How awesome is that?

- Their dynamic. In Paoak’s words and to put it simply, Drarry is, to the core, a snarky pining son of a bitch x an oblivious cinnamon roll willing to roast him every single time.

And like…yeah, there’s so many ships out there that are enemies to lovers, or that have shared trauma, or that have clashing/opposite personalities, or that meet as kids. But I don’t know that many that combine all of the above. And all of these are represented in so many different ways depending on when the fic is set! Drarry bickering innocently as kids, Drarry discovering their sexualities and feeling all the UST as teens, Drarry figuring out their lives as adults… Canon and everything that comes before and after it leaves us with such a wide range of ages to explore that you don’t see in many other ships.

And that’s not even mentionint how complementary they are. They were literally written to be everything the other is not and, in many aspects, to have the things the other wants the most. They’re made to clash against each other; they have every reason to hate each other, but, when it comes down to it, they come back to the other like metal to a magnet. Which gives so much room for us to imagine them coming together post-canon; growing and changing the other for the better, posing a challenge for the other, and driving each other mad. They just need each other, but the best part is—they do in canon. Their dynamic, the intensity between them—it’s all there in the books, if you just dare see it. But because Drarry itself is not canon, there are…quite literally no restrictions. There’s a different Drarry for every one of us depending on the way we interpret it. Canon is a strong foundation—one where we’re all free to build as many castles as we want.

And even though they’re so unstable, even though they’re always at the edge, there’s…balance, between them. Some people see their dynamic in canon as bullying, but from the perspective of yours dearly, who happens to be a victim of bullying…there’s a big difference between the unbalance that bullying entails and the constant back and forth that goes on between Drarry, and that leaves a different one of them coming on top every time. A back and forth that, by the way, only goes on until it really matters: when lives are at stake—that’s when they risk it all to save the other. Without hesitation.

And that’s where it gets the most interesting. Because at first glance, one could say that Draco is bad and that Harry is good. But if you dig a little bit deeper, they’re both scared, clueless, traumatised kids. They’re both flawed. Think of just the Sectumsempra incident, or how Draco can’t bring himself to kill Dumbledore despite everything that’s at stake. It’s nice to read about perfect characters from time to time, but if you want to explore everything there is to see in the gray area of life, fiction, and morality, Drarry is that ship that just takes your hand and walks you through every other path you may want to explore.

Which takes us to the last point:

- The heavy themes. Combine points one and two together—a fandom that is huge, alive, open-minded and sensitive and a ship that is everything but simple—and you’ll end up with a vast amount of fic that explores the most complex themes, often avoided in media and even within other fandoms, without stepping out of their explosive ship dynamic. And all of it often in the context of YA literature; adult, problematic, serious themes, combined with fun, adventure and magic.

And because god forbid that we did any studying instead of coming up with this hell of an answer, we even made our own (again, incomplete) list of themes that we’ve seen, loved, and learnt from in the Drarry fandom: infidelity, PTSD, grief, mental illnesses, self-discovery at all stages of life, sexuality, neurodivergence, disabilities, post-war politics, abuse, self-harm and suicide themes, denial of feelings, the brutality of war, the harshness of realising you’ve been kept from the real world and the discovery of it, unrequited love and a lack of communication even when there’s sex, consent and dubcon, and last but not least, sexual encounters that range from vanilla to BDSM, but that aren’t just smut for the sake of smut; that teach you about boundaries, and kinks, and safe/sane/consensual, and that act as a way for the characters to express emotions they’re trying to hide, and to connect. For their story to evolve; for them to change together.

OMGGGG are you kidding? This was the highlight of my morning! I got these asks while I was in class and for a moment I didn’t feel like throwing my notes out the window 😂

YEP, it’s a funny story, actually. Two summers ago, she felt like reading the HP books and asked me to read them with her. I refused at first, because I was that kind of person that hated Harry Potter, but then she bribed me with reading my favourite books if I read these, so I did. And then Sirius died and I decided to come back to Tumblr just to find Sirius centered fic. Which led me to Wolfstar. Which led me to a fic rec list of Wolfstar AND Drarry fics. Which led me to finding Restraint by @fleetofshippyships. It was probably the most fucked up fic I’d read at the time, it was my first time reading Drarry, and I LOVED IT. So I sent a link to @paoak and told her as much, with a warning of “you’re probably gonna think I’m crazy, pls don’t hate me.”

…she didn’t reply to my message. At all. ALL DAY. Just as I was starting to get worried, she texts back. And she informs me that she’s FINISHED THE FIC and is starting to re-read it because she is OBSESSED. (The relieeeef)

(To understand why I share fanfic with her in the first place you probably should know that we cosplayed as Bubbline before we started dating, when we were pining, and I wrote her Bubbline fanfic for her birthday when we were pining. We have been gay idiots with gay ships for a loooong time)

It just went downhill from there XD I started writing Drarry, she started drawing it (check her tag #paoakart) (also we have a long history of me being the writer and she being the artist in the relationship), and we started consuming fanfic after fanfic – especially her. Now every time I so much as hint at wanting to read a new fic, she pulls out her infinite list of favourite Drarry fics and starts reading summary after summary to me 😂

On this note, the other day she finally convinced me to read Running on Air! Now, when we start reading or watching something together, we have this unspoken rule that we don’t usually finish it apart, so I can only read the fic when I’m with her, or…

Yep. I am her personal podficcer 😂😂😂😂 also don’t ask why I have her saved as Patootie I don’t even remember

We also make silly Drarry doodles together from time to time! They’re somewhere in my blog 😂 And we meet to have lunch together so we can read fanfic together in the corner of the cafe. And she’s the casual alpha of like half of my fics and wips. And sometimes she stalks my Tumblr and reads my drabbles and then sends me messages being all like “Draco and Harry’s dynamic in that fic is suspiciously similar to you and I 👀”. Oops. And every week we share songs with one another that remind us of Drarry 😂 (The latest is Stories by Jackson Guthy)

So… yeah. You could say that we both like Drarry and stuff a lot 😂

It’s my turn to apologise! Sorry for the long ass reply, lol, I got excited. I love being able to share fandoms and OTPs and create fanart and fanfic with her! And I love her so much!!!
