Josh Scott of JHS Pedals recently made a video on designing a "beginner" pedalboard (see above). Although I doubt he meant to come off as hypocritical (anti his, "Worry about gear less; play more"), aspects of it felt that way.
The video instead is an explanation of what a beginning guitarist should acquire, because Josh states what specific effect types and cables to use. At the beginning of the video, he should be clear that new guitarists, for the first couple of years, stick to one or two pedals, lay them on the floor with cheap patch cables that can be replaced easily if they break, and use 9-volt batteries and/or a couple of individual power supplies to run them. This minimal gear is easy to throw in a backpack if going to someone's house or practice space.
After a while, if it starts to feel cumbersome, then upgrade to a system to manage it all. That's the guitarist level who this video should be aimed at: the one who already knows what pedals to use and what cables to use with them.

Finding the Right Pedal Board Power Supply
Being a guitarist, you will always feel the impact of pedals across your guitar pedalboard cables. However, you may now reconsider staying away from the conventional battery-backed power supply and want to upgrade to a more robust form of electric power supply. We can explain  options to get the right source of power supply.
Tumblr media
Why Do People Need the Power Supply for Pedals?
Once you use a reliable power source for your guitar pedals, the sound quality of the instrument gets improved, and you can then use the pedals to their full capacity. The use of 9V battery support does not hold well when it comes to powering a host of pedals on the pedalboard. If you are a musician by profession, we advise you not to opt for battery power. An electrical power supply always allows you to maintain the right amount of voltage through the pedalboard, provided there is no interruption. Unlike 9v batteries, you can leave your instrument plugged in because it will not consume any power.
Tumblr media
What is the Voltage Requirement?
These days, the majority of pedal linked guitars have the capacity of 9V. However, some of the pedalboards are compatible with a range of 12V, 18V, and even 24V voltage support. You should always check the voltage capacity before buying a pedal power supply source. Large numbers of pedals are best suited for the usual 9V power. In contrast, some may require an upgraded power supply, like the older versions of Electro Harmonix pedals. Generally, it’s up to the manufacturer to decide what voltage of power supply is admissible for a certain grade of pedals.
What About the Current Consumption?
Before assessing the voltage requirement, check the power consumption needed to power the pedal. The measuring unit, in this case, is mA (milliamps). However, some of the pedals with analog distortion will require low power consumption, which is somewhere around 20 mA or even less. The idea is to consult a checklist for your specific requirement. You don't need to worry about excessive current supply as too much flow of current will not damage the pedals. However, you must ensure that all pedals on the pedalboards are of professional-grade. As a result, all the pedals get a uniform amount of power supply irrespective of active pedals strewn on your instrument.
What is an Isolated Supply?
It’s primarily engaged to reduce unwanted noise that may occur due to low-quality voltage supply. It means each power output is fully isolated and also ensures that each pedal is getting an uninterrupted electricity supply. Otherwise, a daisy chain of pedalboard wiring may push the power flow through one lead into a solitary pedal. It may dilute the power along the way and degrade the sound quality in the process.
Tumblr media
Which is the Perfect Power Supply?
As a musician, you may discover that you have a pedal that requires a voltage specification of 9V and 250mA to 300mA voltage output. Alternatively, you have scores of regular pedals that consume only a bit of electricity. Either way, you must monitor that each pedal is fed with the right amount of power supply. If it doesn’t happen, you will not get the right sound out of the flat pedal cables. You get 10 inputs with varying current consumption.
The Bottom Line
An ideal combination of pedal power supply is a must for professionals. Besides, musicians should always use the correct ones to ensure top quality sound.

Jonny’s May 2022 Pedalboard at  Amsterdam’s Paradiso
Tumblr media
Jonny playing The Smoke at Amsterdam’s Paradiso (karindgr). Note the pedals resting on top of the Rhodes piano next to the Prophet 5 REV4 synthesizer: those are used with the Prophet.
Jonny experimented with some new pedals during The Smile’s rehearsals in late-2021 and early-2022, including a Strymon Timeline, a Nano POG, and a vintage Ibanez TS-808. But by the end of rehearsals, he had settled on a relatively concise setup with eight pedals for his guitar. He subsequently used that setup for The Smile’s three live-streamed shows at London’s Magazine in January.
However, it seems that Thom and Jonny are both using the Smile’s 2022 European tour to experiment with even more pedals! So far, Thom’s new Grand Orbiter pedal helped to inspire the new song Bodies Laughing. As for Jonny, probably the most notable addition is his new Earthquaker Devices Pyramids flanger, which seemingly helped to inspire the new song IT/Flangers.
Jonny’s guitar pedalboard has most of the pedals from the Magazine shows, and he’s started to use his DD-200 instead of his RE-20 on even more songs (including The Opposite)! He has stopped using his Demeter Tremulator (set as a 6db boost during Thin Thing at the Magazine shows) and his big box Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, but he’s added more than he’s taken away. His board at Amsterdam’s Paradiso includes an Earthquaker Pyramids, an Earthquaker Organizer, and one of Thom’s old Telenorida Kompressors! He also has a Boss LS-2, with cables connected to the A and B outputs, but not the main output.
The following is a list of Jonny’s pedals for The Smile’s performance in Amsterdam on May 27, 2022. However, Jonny continued to adjust his pedalboard during the tour, as we’ll see in a future post. The signal order is based on his setup for the Magazine and other past pedalboards.
Guitar Signal Chain
Gibson Les Paul Standard (vintage)
Boss TU-3 tuner
Earthquaker Devices Pyramids flanger ↑ IT/Flangers
Telenorida Kompressor
Earthquaker Devices Organizer pitch-shifter ↑ Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses (?)

Boss SD-1 super overdrive ↑ The Opposite, Thin Thing
Akai Headrush E2 looper ↑ Skirting On The Surface
Boss RE-20 Space Echo ↑ The Smoke The Opposite (with reverb knob at maximum), Skirting On The Surface (outro only)
Boss DD-200 delay ↑ The Opposite, Thin Thing, Just Eyes and Mouth, Under Our Pillows, IT/Flangers
Boss LS-2 line selector ↑ may be part of bass setup instead.
Radial Engineering DI box ↑ sits on top of Jonny’s amp. Sends output to both the amp and the PA.
Fender ‘65 Reissue Super Reverb combo amp
Electro-Harmonix single-output expression ↑ off-board, connected to RE-20.
Bass Signal Chain
Fender Precision Bass (vintage)
Boss TU-3 tuner
Radial Engineering DI box ↑ sits on top of Jonny’s amp. Sends output to both the amp and the PA.
Ampeg SVT-CL amp head (late-90s)
Ampeg SVT-810 cabinet
MIDI Pedals
Studiologic MP-117 MIDI pedalboard ↑ controls Jonny’s synth modules on The Opposite, Waving a White Flag, We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings, Just Eyes and Mouth, and Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses.
Blackstar Live Logic 6-button ↑ controls a Max/MSP patch to loop Thom’s vocals on A Hairdryer.
Prophet 5 Signal Chain
Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 REV4
Peterson StroboStomp HD tuner
Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run delay/reverb

Note
I have physical modular synths and I can confirm the patch cables very quickly become a rats nest and it's unavoidable
i could never deal with all those cables it would be the death of me like on my bass pedalboard everything has to be laid out beneath the board so i don't go insane but you can't do that with a modular synth it's awful
