hihi!!!
what do you think of an asian danny (comics) ? i know we have pei (whom i adore) but how do you think danny as a character would change? (personally i feel like danny would feel less isolated in kun lun, maybe only dimensional differences, but would face more racism back in america. i think white danny is a better concept, to be torn in half between your nature(america) vs nurture(kun lun) yknow)
<3
Hihi! Thank you for asking!
A few key points, just to start off:
I am not Asian myself, therefore I feel like my opinion on this topic doesn't really matter. (I also don't work for Marvel, so my opinion really doesn't matter.)
At the end of the day, this conversation comes down to the desire for more and better Asian representation across the Marvel Universe, which is obviously something we should all want.
Okay, now, on to the in-universe, Danny-specific stuff:
I would be perfectly happy with an Asian Danny, and I understand the arguments for making that change. I don't personally feel like it's a necessary change in this case, but I do get it, and I do think that the introduction of the Iron Fist legacy was very important; back when he was the first and only person to have defeated Shou-Lao, it was certainly much more uncomfortable that he was an outsider. (I will also point out that the feeling of being pulled in two directions--America and K'un-Lun--is something that he would still experience if he were Asian. Probably even moreso due, as you mentioned, to anti-Asian racism and anti-immigrant sentiments in the US.)
For me, the question is more about whether Danny should be of K'un-Lun descent specifically. Just making him Asian wouldn't make him not an outsider there, and that was the main cause of his alienation as a child. The thing that baffled me about Lin Lie being chosen as the next Iron Fist to presumably "fix" the "problem" of Danny's non-native status was that Lin isn't from K'un-Lun either. He's just as much of an outworlder as Danny, and at least Danny grew up in the city and had family there. (And obviously, that's not even touching on the fact that we already had Pei, who was born K'un-Lun.)
Tumblr media
Tucos: "You dare aspire to join the ranks of the immortals of K'un-Lun--!?!" Danny: "I dare nothing, Tucos--I merely am. If I am Iron Fist, it is because the gods--thru Yu-Ti--will it so...and if I become an immortal--it is because they will that as well!" Merrin: "Is that so, outworlder--? How pleasant to see an Earther mortal adopt our ways so...fervently." Iron Fist vol. 1 #2 by Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Michele W., F. Chiarmonte, and Joe Rosen
Tumblr media
Kheng: "Stupid orphan couldn't stop a bunch of dogs from turning his mother into breakfast...how were you ever going to face an immortal?" Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #3 by Kaare Kyle Andrews and Joe Caramagna
Tumblr media
Yang Yi: "The next Iron Fist should have been one of us. Any of us--even Mei Min. It should have been me." Lin: "I--I didn't call Shou-Lao to me on purpose." Yang Yi: "That's even worse! You stole something that belongs to K'un-Lun and you don't even know its worth. The last Iron Fist was an outsider. So was the one before him. Special enough that the dragon chose them...or callous enough to rip its heart out without respect." Iron Fist vol. 6 #2 by Alyssa Wong, Michael Yg, Sean Chen, Victor Olazaba, and Jay David Ramos
If Danny had been Asian but not from K'un-Lun, the bullying might have focused less on his appearance (he gets called "Snow Pea" and "Snowflake" in Living Weapon), but he still would have been an outsider, an Earther mortal freak, and his bullies would still have been angry that he became the Iron Fist instead of them. If Danny had been of K'un-Lun descent...honestly, I still think he would have struggled to fit in, since he wasn't raised in the culture. Wendell as we know him didn't teach Danny anything about K'un-Lun, and unless we considered the idea of changing Wendell's personality or past experiences, I can imagine that would still be the case if he had blood ties to the city. It would still have been something Wendell spent most of Danny's life trying to put behind him, and Danny would still have been arriving massively traumatized, and even with the knowledge that his ancestors had been from K'un-Lun, I'm not sure how much that would have fixed for him, or for his peers' perception of him. This is a dimension that is extremely difficult to access, and thus a very insular society. They don't get a lot of outworlders, regardless of their race or ancestry.
For the record, it would be easy to give Danny blood ties to K'un-Lun without changing a single thing about his backstory, due to the simple fact that we have no idea where Wendell came from. He was just some random orphan Orson stumbled upon in the Himalayas. It would be very easy for a writer to do a story arc in which Danny found out that his father (possibly even unbeknownst to Wendell) was born in K'un-Lun. Rather than retconning Danny's backstory to make him aware of this from the beginning, I feel like it would be a more interesting approach to have Danny discover a blood connection later on, in the present day. I am always a big fan of explorations of Danny's relationship to K'un-Lun, and this would certainly present new territory in that regard.
Ultimately, though, I agree with you in that I don't feel like this change is needed, or even that it would change much about Danny's character or journey (which I suppose could be an argument either for or against). He would still be that same guy caught between two worlds and not fully at home in either. My personal feeling is that I would rather see characters like Colleen Wing, Pei, Sparrow, Miranda...heck, even Steel Serpent...given more of a spotlight. As I mentioned at the top, what's most important is having strong Asian representation throughout the Marvel Universe, and there are a ton of fantastic, under-used Asian characters within the Iron Fist sphere who I hate to see buried under ongoing debates about this one guy's ethnicity, especially when those debates too often seem to contain incorrect information from people who haven't actually read many of the comics.
Again, thanks for the question! Obviously, this is a very layered and sensitive topic, and having lived through the heated conversations surrounding the Netflix show, it's something that is always on my mind.

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
🕯️was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn't think it would take you?
💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it.
💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
Literally anything from when I wrote for the Devil Judge. Pretty much all of my fics in that fandom blew up, especially the first fic I had ever written Wait, We're Married?!. It has so many hits and kudos, it's almost a little ridiculous
🕯️was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn't think it would take you?
Um...I wouldn't say any of my fics were hard on me, but there were a few fics that I wrote where I'm like...damn that's dark. I think the fic that answers this question is You're Safe Now. The prompt for it originally was dark anyways, but then I had to take it to like...the next level and I'm just like...mm. That's a little dark even for you.
💥find your least kudos'd fic - say something wonderful about it.
Tattoo on My Arm and In My Heart - this fic was so self indulgent but I love it. The idea for it literally came from watching a BTS video of Chen Yucheng and Quan Pei Lun and I noticed that Chen Yucheng had a tattoo on his forearm. It was like my first tattoo artist fic but I loved it and I had fun writing it
Stolen Hearts - another Junchun fic and I'm kind of sad this one doesn't have more kudos because it's like Prince!Zhan Junbai x Thief!Yu Tangchun! What's not to love? But I'm happy with how it turned out and I really enjoyed the ending of it
(But I'm also not surprised that these have not as many kudos; I think I'm one of the few rare people who write Junchun fics and Junchun fics never get as many kudos as Yuezhi fics. But that's okay. I still love writing them and will keep writing them)

As China Loosens COVID Restrictions, Protesters Fear Retribution : Inside US
By Yew Lun Tian and Jessie Pang BEIJING/HONG KONG (Reuters) – Late last month, Shanghai resident Pei was one of many people who came out in support of historic protests against China’s COVID-19 curbs, including filming several seconds of footage of a man being arrested on a street corner. Almost immediately, Pei said, five or six plainclothes police grabbed him. He was taken to a police station…

hey just been getting into your iron fist blog. Anyway with the state of the character not being the iron fist anymore(still so jarring how it happened) what would you personally write(if theoretically somehow you get to write an iron fist book) the character would go from here accounting to all the previous plot lines in his runs?
Hi! Sorry for the delayed response; I love this question.
Yes, I get re-jarred again every time I think about it. Utterly baffling. Frankly, I would do a little bit of what they did with Pei in her recent wonderful Marvel Voices appearance, which was centered around her trying to find her purpose and place in the world after losing her powers (remember: she had the Iron Fist role taken away from her too). Danny's story, for the past 50 years, has centered on his relationship to the Iron Fist identity, to K'un-Lun, to Earth, and to where he truly belongs. He is a man of two worlds, and he has gone back and forth on how to handle that balance and what his role is in both worlds. He loved K'un-Lun but was betrayed by it in Power Man and Iron Fist volume 1. He built himself a purpose on Earth as a superhero, then re-found his connection to K'un-Lun with the discovery of the Iron Fist legacy in Immortal Iron Fist. He failed to save K'un-Lun in Living Weapon and redeemed himself and rediscovered his purpose in Iron Fist volume 5. He got his childhood best friend Sparrow back. He got his sister Miranda back. That rocky, winding journey of self-discovery and loss and gained connections to K'un-Lun and the Iron Fist identity is one of the things I love so much about following this character, and if any good can come from him giving up the chi of Shou-Lao, I'd say it would be in giving Danny yet another opportunity really delve into all of that. Who is he when he isn't the Iron Fist? And what is his connection to K'un-Lun when he is no longer their Immortal Weapon?
I feel like we have been deprived of a truly K'un-Lun-centered Iron Fist story for too long, and in this theoretical world in which I was the new writer, I would have that be the primary setting for a comic that would see Danny return home and truly reconnect with what K'un-Lun means to him, and what he means to K'un-Lun just as a normal citizen. I would want to really dig into why he gave up his role as the Iron Fist (the Heart of the Dragon creative team didn't bother to do it, so somebody's gotta make that make sense). I think this would be an amazing opportunity for a bonding adventure with Miranda, who he has never really had the chance to really talk to about their father and their shared history. Miranda is the child Wendell abandoned. She watched Danny become the Iron Fist for the sake of avenging a father who she had every reason to hate. I WANT THAT EXPLORED! I would also want to delve more into Danny's relationship with Sparrow, the new Yu-Ti. He was, for one glorious chunk of time, her Weapon. I loved that. Now that he is not, what is their dynamic? What continuing role can he play in rebuilding K'un-Lun, which is very likely still reeling from the revolution in Immortal Iron Fist and the two subsequent invasions in Living Weapon and volume 5? I would want to continue the conversation about the fruit from the Tree of Immortality, which Danny has rejected twice now. What would that offer mean to him now? What would it take for him to accept it? And of course, I would want Pei to be there, because as I mentioned, she is going through this exact same thing, and she is, for all intents and purposes, the child that Danny was never able to have with Misty, and I think that's really important, and their relationship is really important.
I guess what this all boils down to is this: Danny is lost and directionless, and returns to K'un-Lun with Pei to try and sort things out. Some kind of bonding adventure occurs that allows him to 1. show off the fact that he is still one of the top two martial artists in the Marvel Universe, goddammit, and 2. do some serious soul-searching with himself, and with Pei, Miranda, and Sparrow, and reconnect with the city where he grew up, now out of the shadow of the Iron Fist legacy. And you know what? Davos should be there too. How the heck does he feel about Danny not being the Iron Fist anymore? How does he feel, now that some time has passed, about having killed his father and being a sworn enemy of K'un-Lun? Is there a possibility for redemption? Does he want that? Does anyone want that?
I know this is all very jumbled, but there is a whole dang lot that I want right now, and if Marvel gave me even a fraction of any of this, I'd be grateful. Thank you again for the question!

If you could create a show of your own,
who will be part of the cast?
what is the show about? will it be a drama series or movie?
what would be the genre?
happy ending or sad? or bittersweet?
what would it focus on? relationships? or the genre? (cases for detective, or forensics)
which female roles would you add? any byn-type ones to piss ppl off? or Chu Ran-type ones only?
if no censorship, what would you add in there? (assuming its cn dramas)
what else would you add and/or leave out that's not asked here?
Tumblr media
Oh...oh my sweet baby fucking jesus this is going to be fun (I'm also very picky about what I want so...*sucks in air between teeth* y'all've been warned)
1. who will be part of the cast?
Okay so the Killer and Healer cast but do what Checkmate fucking did and give them new roles. Mao Zijun and Ian are the leads obvi (and we can even have Chen Yu Cheng and Quan Pei Lun play the second couple)
2. what is the show about? will it be a drama series or movie?
I'd say drama series. You can put more stuff into dramas than you can movies and you can flesh things out a little bit more. But the series wouldn't be too overly drawn out...no ridiculous number of episodes. Between 24-40 episodes is good. I think personally that's the right amount. If you can't fit it between that many episodes, you gotta cut the unimportant shit (but still have some filler because filler is good and if the show gets too plot heavy, we need a break to let our brains breathe)
3. what would be the genre?
Genre would probably be either wuxia or detective/mystery/investigation, since that's what I'm typically drawn to. Hell, even mafia. I'd take that.
But if it's detective/mystery/investigation, we gotta do shit 👏🏻 by 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 book 👏🏻 (like, follow quality assurance guidelines and shit so that people don't fucking comment and say that's not how you do shit.  Like, we will get fucking EXPERTS/I will step in so that shit is as accurate as possible. If medical dramas can do that, so can fucking detective dramas).  Also, if we’re doing detective/mystery/investigation, the cases can’t be too complicated/the science can’t be too complicated because we want viewers to be interested, not overwhelmed.  (But we also don’t want to have to explain everything to them like it’s a science class, you know?)
And if it's Wuxia, we need to have 1) good fucking wigs and 2) pretty fucking clothing/costumes. Oh, and believable fight scenes. I want good fucking fight scenes
4. happy ending or sad? or bittersweet?
Happy ending. Angst with a happy ending. That's my perfect ending. I don't/can't do sad endings (thanks K&H) and bittersweet endings are not particularly my cup of tea. Hopeful endings aren't bad but also not really a fan of that. No cliff hangers either, unless we're planning on making a season 2 but if I've told the story I wanted to tell, we end on a happy ending. And no bullshit endings either. Don't waste my fucking time (I’m looking at you MRIAD)
5. what would it focus on? relationships? or the genre? (cases for detective, or forensics)
I'd want the drama to focus on both. Sure just focusing on one over the other is fine but there needs to be a balance. If you focus too much on the cases over the relationships, shit gets boring real fast and all of the characters feel boring and one dimensional. And if you focus on the relationships over the cases, it's like what's the fucking point of having a detective/case drama if you're not going to focus on it
6. which female roles would you add? any byn-type ones to piss ppl off? or Chu Ran-type ones only?
Only Chu Ran-like roles, please. She needs to have purpose and not just be there to be a pretty face or to be the love interest (not saying that it's bad if she is one but I don't particularly care for those types of damsel-in-distress characters). I need sustenance from my female characters please. We'll have characters like Chu Ran, Ma Han, Jiang Ling, Zhong Yiren. Like they can still be feminine but for the love of god give them a brain. Hell, I'd even let some of them be villains because we need more female villains, thanks
7. if no censorship, what would you add in there? (assuming its cn dramas)
If no censorship...handholding, forehead touches, face cupping/neck cupping, neck caress (yes, the Jiang Yuelou neck caress has me in a fucking chokehold)...I don't particularly think there needs to be any kissing as long as the audience can see that the two leads are fucking in love with each other (and with Zijun and Ian as the leads, there's not gonna be a problem there)
8. what else would you add and/or leave out that's not asked here?
I don't think I have anything else to add...I said what I needed to be said
Thanks for asking this jiejie, this was fun!
