Beauty shots of my current favorite mechanical pencils in my collection. 😍 They make me a better artist. 😏 … Just kidding. But they sure do look pretty and feel nice + premium to hold. 🤩

Last One in the chamber, make it count.
I’m down to very last lead of my Pentel 0.9mm Blue lead, which is no longer in production and impossible to find online. Virtually no one else but a Chinese company I found on Amazon makes 0.9mm colored lead.
So I sketched a little tribute with what little I’ve got left of my favorite lead to my favorite lead.

How do you take your notes?? Love your blog <3
Thank you!
I use a modified version of the Cornell note taking system! I’ll explain it below.
Tumblr media
I use multiple things to take my notes:
Black fountain pen (Lamy Safari medium nib or Platinum Preppy fine nib)
Multicolored gel pens (Zebra Sarasa, 0.5)
Highlighters (Zebra Midliners 5ct)
Clear stickie notes of various sizes
Black permanent pen (for writing on plastic, 0.3)
Mechanical pencil and Eraser (Pentel Graphgear 500, 0.5; General’s Factis Eraser)
These all have a specific meaning to me within my notes so that I can easily see what I am looking for on a page at a glance.
I take my main notes in pencil so I can easily change them as I need to, I often mis-spell things so this is useful for that or if I got information wrong and need to change it
Gel Pens:
I use these to separate different sections of notes that are within the same larger note module. I also use them to add information in margins when they are big enough as they are easily distinguishable from the pencil.
Fountain Pen:
I use this to do my main heading and date for normal notes, and for notes that do not directly apply to the class but are still in that classes notebook. (My history notebook has history notes in pencil and the notes we took on writing in fountain pen. I know I’ll be using the writing notes a lot so I want to find them easily)
Highlighters:
The highlighters I use come in a five pack, and there are green, tan, grey, light pink, and brown colors. Each one has a highlighter tip and a bullet tip.
Green: highlight definitions or very important information. I only ever use this color in this way so that if I see green flipping through my notebook I know I need to go back at look at it no matter what
Tan: Context, sub definitions, or extra information. This is the color I go to after the green
Grey and Pink: I use these colors interchangeably as the page needs to highlight things I personally think I will want to go back and read
Brown: This color is too dark for normal highlighting so I use it to separate different note modules
Plastic Stickies and Pen:
These are for extra context when I have no room and for adding diagrams. I most often use them for when I have taken a full page of notes from the textbook before class and the professor adds extra information during lecture. I prefer the clear notes to the (more ‘aesthetic’) brown and tan ones because I can see through them and more easily remove them or lift them up to see the notes underneath. I do need a special pen to mark on them without smudging, but that is not an issue for me.
As the are clear, if I want to add a diagram, I can pull it up on my phone, add a stickie over it, and trace it with the pen. So no more messy diagrams.
Note taking:
I have two different times when I am taking notes and the things I do change order depending on that. If I am taking notes from something like a textbook, a documentary, or a slideshow on my laptop, I do all my highlighting and extras as I am taking the actual notes. When I am in lecture, I take my notes all in pencil except for the note sections in pen, then go back during breaks in the lecture and highlight/add where I need to.
I take very very extensive notes, so do not be alarmed if you don’t have a lot of notes. You want to have at least (In order of importance):
Definitions and Big Ideas
Important Context
Diagrams
After you have those, you can add things that you want to remember, things that are less important but maybe still good to know, and extra facts or figures.
My note taking follows this pattern:
Section Title (pen)
Definition word - definition (always highlighted in green)
Idea (level of importance determines green, tan, pink or grey, or no highlight)
Sub ideas
Bulleted under idea
Sometimes the sub ideas also have sub ideas that are bulleted under them
I don’t bother with the summary in the Cornell system as I don’t usually have time in a lecture to do them, if you have time and want to do it, go for it!
Handwriting
My handwriting can vary from a little shaky but very legible to scribbled based on how fast I am writing. If you don’t have great handwriting, don’t worry about it as long as you can read it later. It is not easy to notice this right after you have written it because you know what it says, but if you even think it might be a little too messy, erase it and write it again. You’ll thank yourself later.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop them in the askbox!

I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR ABOUT MECHANICAL PENCILS AND MECHANICAL PENCIL LEAD :3333 i know so much about pens but so little about pencils its a shame really ..
HELLO I WILL TELL YOU ALL ABOUT MECHANICAL PENCILS MY FRIEND
(i'm going to start off with pentel brand mechanical pencils because they are my favorite brand and i'll continue with others in the reblogs)
i'll start off with my best friend, the pentel graphgear 1000 mechanical pencil
Tumblr media
i use this one the most out of all of my pencils, she's so versatile. pentel is one of the few brands i can find that makes mechanical pencils capable of handling superfine leads, like .3 mm, the finest lead width of the graphgear 1000 series. let me tell you, the first time you use a .3 mm is life-changing i'm not joking. it completely changes your view of the world, my guy. it's made of steel and is very durable. it's weighted near the end, allowing for great precision and stability. it has a built-in indicator on the side that shows which lead is currently in the pencil—helpful whenever you switch between different leads all the time like i do. i would recommend carrying around an extra eraser with this pencil since, like most pentel mechanical pencils, the erasers are quite small, and they are used up pretty quickly. they're easily the best mechanical pencils you can get for the price, and they will last you a long time.
if you're looking for something cheaper, the pentel graphgear 500 is a decent alternative
Tumblr media
these come in the same sizes as the graphgear 1000s, and they were my introduction to the beautiful world that is superfine mechanical pencil leads. these are a bit cheaper, but also not as high quality. they're made more from plastic, and break easier. they jam up frequently and every single one i've used loses the metal clip at the end within a week or two. it doesn't have the handy lead hardness indicator on the side, so it can be a pain to try and figure out what kind of lead you're using if you like to switch between types a lot. nice weight, not bad to hold and work with. i'd still say that they graphgear 1000 is worth the couple extra buck or two.
let me introduce you to my beloved, the love of my life, my everything, the pentel orenz nero mechanical pencil
Tumblr media
if .3 mm isn't fine enough for you, this pencil works with .2 mm lead, the finest i have been able to find anywhere. and it works astoundingly well. i was worried that i wouldn't be able to use this pencil for it's thin lead because i tend to press too hard while writing, but this motherfucker proved me wrong. it features a sliding shaft mechanism that protects the lead from the breakage common in superfine leads like these. the weight is similar to that of a graphgear, and though the grip is not made of a soft material, it is very comfortable to hold. i have not had to use the lead-jam clearing tool more than twice despite having used it for god knows how long now, but i wouldn't recommend using any lead softer than hb because those do tend to jam up .2 mm pencils very frequently. this pencil is pretty damn expensive (around $23 i believe) but i love it so much.

Hey I just saw your wolf walkers sketch of Mebh and the wolf and I was just wondering what type of pencil did you use to sketch it out first? I've been trying to find whatever it's called everywhere. Thank you!
I get this question a lot and I should probably make a master post of traditional art supply recs honestly 😂
I use a Pentel Graphgear 500 architect pencil with .5 Pentel brand blue lead! It’s great for getting those really fine lines!

Huge mechanical pencil fan please tell us more (i don’t draw i just fucking love them)
Hello, thank you for your message! To love mechanical pencils is a great thing. ☺️
To get things started, I gathered up as many mechanical pencils (and mechanical erasers) as I could find and have used in the past year.
I absolutely love mechanical pencils because they’re so convenient, durable, reusable, reliable, versatile, and what I learned from using regular pencils in art especially can most certainly be replicated without worrying about many other drawbacks.
This will be a super long post so please bear with me!
Tumblr media
This is a set of Pentel GraphGear 1000 pencils (my favorites) which includes one of each of 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm, and 0.9mm. The 0.4mm was a separate purchase. It comes with four boxes of Pentel HB Super lead for each size and a tube of replacement erasers for this line and many other compatible pencils.
The Pentel GraphGear 1000 series are my favorites because of their rigid design and retractable point that keeps the lead steady and prevents accidents from pokes to drops. The clip is sturdy and acts as a button to retract the point. You can also twist the barrel and always know what lead hardness you’re using whether it’s 2B, B, HB or H. These are amazing to use on good, lightly textured paper.
Tumblr media
The leads shown are the Uni Kuru Toga HB 0.5mm, and Pentel Ain Stein in HB 0.2mm, 0.3mm, 0.4mm and one 2B 0.3mm.
The KuruToga lead is made with the KuruToga technology in mind with a softer outer layer and a harder inner layer to maintain a more consistent thickness through the pencil’s turning mechanism.
Pentel Ain Stein leads are made specifically to write smoother than standard leads by default though they also have varying degrees of hardness/softness. These are my usual lately.
Tumblr media
Uni KuruToga, 0.3mm and 0.5mm (standard)
The mechanism in the Uni KuruToga is made to rotate minutely when the lead hits the surface in order to promote a more consistent line. It may be more suitable for writing but I find it helpful for quick drawings when I don’t need to swap out a different size for a certain effect.
Tumblr media
Pentel Orenz, 0.2mm and 0.3mm
The Pentel Orenz is meant to help with preventing lead breakage with its own gradually retractable tube (also likely better suited for writing). The lead is meant to sit mostly inside for it to prove effective. When drawing, I tend to ignore this function depending on what I’m doing (it holds up quite well if I’m careful). Plus, it’s the only mechanical pencil I’ve found commercially and affordably that used 0.2mm, the smallest commercially available lead I could find. It’s wonderful for minute details in pencil.
Tumblr media
Pilot AirBlanc in 0.3mm
The Pilot AirBlanc have proven indispensable in some of my language study classes years ago where smaller lines made the characters easier to write and more legible for me. The pink one was a gift from a class and I bought a second one in blue. The pencil is quite soft and comfortable and it’s quite fun to use.
Tumblr media
Pentel P200 series pencils in 0.5mm (two have blue and red Pentel Super 0.5mm lead respectively) and one in 0.7mm
The Pentel P200 series have been super reliable for me over the years. I’d keep them so long until the metal part lost its sheen but they were still plenty functional for years and harsh usage. (More than once did a single P205 last me for art classes over the years including drawing as large as 18x24in).
It’s a great sleek, versatile and durable option that’s relatively cheap and easy to find in most stationery sections and art stores, sometimes with additional leads and erasers. The 0.5mm was my favorite size for a long time because it’s thin enough for fine detailing in my drawing but also a comfortable size for writing finely.
Tumblr media
GraphGear 500 series in 0.9mm and 0.3mm
A more heavyweight drafting option, the GraphGear 500 is more clunky and less stylish than its successor. They do their job well for writing and drawing but the grip is not very comfortable for long periods of use but it does prevent slipping. The metal tip does not retract like the 1000 series unfortunately.
Tumblr media
The mechanical erasers I use are from the Tombow Mono line a 2.5x5mm, a 2.3mm and a 3.8mm. They are excellent for erasing small to fine marks and are decently durable and smooth (though a previous 3.8mm one split in half and shattered after continuous wear).
Tumblr media
A “how it’s started vs. how it’s going” model comparison since I began working with and completely adapting to mechanical pencils for writing and drawing.
I hope this was informative! I couldn’t help myself!
(Fun fact: my schooling was weird in my early years and we weren’t always allowed to get up to sharpen pencils even through middle school so mechanical pencils sort of helped to bandage the problem hence my long term obsession)

Im so sorry @jils-things but you made me want to go on a tangent about art supplies in a bit cuz I'm a nerd andhekqkwkdjwoqo i lov u pls dont go away- 😭
Anyway yes I usually make a very light sketch with my pencil so that I could erase it easily for me to retrace it but I am here to make a very important public announcement and I feel that it is my duty to inform the public on something that could be beneficial to the society.
Behold: Kneading Eraser
Tumblr media
This fucker have multiple names; Putty eraser, gummy eraser, kneaded eraser, clay. It's going through a phase, please don't judge it, let it change name every 10 seconds.
What I need is that I want everyone to put everything down and listen to what I say: You run to the art store, Michael's, Art Friend, soup store, whatever store you get your art supply at. You ask the store clerk you want a putty eraser and if they dont give you a putty eraser, tell them they're a loser in malay (it's mak kau hijau. The more your learn folks) and then go to the next store and find a putty eraser until you get them. Its not expensive, it cost me less than 2 bucks for 1 pack of putty eraser.
Why you may ask? Well, I can assure you as someone who draws, putty eraser is much much MUCH better than a normal generic eraser.
First of all, there's no dust. When you erase a line with this boy, there wont be any rubber shit nugget clumping on the table and making a mess on your bed (i know you hate your spine too and likes to draw on bed i live in ur walls u guys better sleep with 1 eye open). I'm so serious like I have 0 eraser shavings in my house since I use a putty eraser. Please stop sleeping covered in eraser shavings.
It's also malleable. You can literally shape it to whatever shape that you want so you could erase a a tiny spot that you couldn't reach without disturbing other lines. And it works sooooo well as a stress ball or a toy. People actually knead it into animal shape. Can you shape a normal rectangle eraser into a giraffe? CAN YOU? DO YOU SEE MY POINT?
Tumblr media
Do you suffer from loneliness? Do you need a conversation opener? Are you tired of kneading an eraser to shape it into a friend? Believe it or not, putty eraser is a great conversation starter when you dont want to start a conversation! As a personal anecdote: whenever I sketch in school, if anyone I know sees me sketching, they will always ask me what the fuck is the clay thing I use to erase my lines and then I have to explain to them what is a kneadable eraser and then whenever I demo'd the eraser, an amusing OOOOOOO will come out and they will play with my eraser for like 5 mins. Am I mad that my eraser is taken away? No because the eraser can also be s e p e r a t e d . Black magic fuckery. Please go buy a putty eraser.
Anyway for the pencil, I swear to god if you ever get this pencil, you will never use a normal mechanical pencil ever again.
Tumblr media
The pencil I'm using is called a drafting pencil, specifically Pentel Graphgear 500. There's tons of drafting pencil in the market but just look at this one because other's are expensive and you will cry. This pencil had a plastic body but the base is made of metal so its pretty heavy. It feels v e r y c o m f o r t a b l e on the hand, like the moment you hold it, you will believe that this is how mechanical pencil suppose to be. It just fits so perfectly with the contour of you finger. The weight feels so nice on your hands and the grip is very comfortable. The pencil sleeve also doesnt budge so you don't and won't have any issue of lead breakage (unless you press your pencil really hard)
Tumblr media
It's also very long-lasting. I have 2 of them in my pencil case. The one on the left were bought in 2021 from Muji. The one on the right were bought in 2015. It still works fine despite being 8 years old. I don't think I ever have any mechanical pencil that is long lasting like this one. This is legit one of the product that I would say would last a lifetime if you take care of it well.
This ends my sleepy deprivation fueled post for today.
TL;DR: Please go buy kneaded eraser and a drafting pencil I am on my knees rn-

Love your art :)!! Was wondering what kind of supplies you usually use? pen, pencils etc
Thank you!!❤
I usually use Pentel graphgear 500 0.5 (2B) pencil or Centropen black liner when I draw at home and a regular ballpoint pen when I draw at work (my WoLs (ff1 and ff14) sketches). Sometimes I use some alcohol markers but I'm not good at it, so I just use one or two to add color or shadows. I also have an Art creation sketchbook and the paper is thick enough to handle alcohol markers or watercolors, maybe gouache and ink too, but I haven't tried it yet
It's funny that before I wouldn't call myself a traditional artist, because I only used my tablet even for sketches (like my D or twins sketches), but at some point I just got too lazy or busy to take it out and… I started drawing in my sketchbook huh
I still don't know how to make good finished arts in the sketchbook (not that I can do it in digital either…), but sketching helps me practice. There are several ideas that I'd like to draw on the tablet, but I’m not sure I’m able to do it yet
