Okay, this is more so just me looking for some advice. It could be from you, could be from the AI, could be from a friend of yours or a mutual or whatever, but regardless, I'm desperate, so I'll take anything I can get.

I'm intent on creating a list of names for things that exist, but that would very obviously be called something else in a setting where those names don't make sense.

Like, I'll use Hyrule's earth primarily in case (but I'd probably be amiable to Arcane suggestions, too; which, my gosh, SUCH an amazing show & I get the feeling you'd be obsessed with Silco & possibly even Victor, I certainly am; but that's for another time).

Anyway, anything named for a specific culture, religion, historical event/figure, or whatever, would very obviously not have that same name on Hyrule's earth because they would make no sense there.

Some examples: Adam's apple, Saint Elmo's Fire, Mangalitza pig, Newton's Law, Murphy's Law, ect.

There are definitely more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

Regardless. If such things were to appear in Hyrule, they'd need different names.

I've already thought of one for both Saint Elmo's Fire & Mangalitza pigs.

Saint Nabooru/Urbōsa's Shield & Mystàthï Pig, but I'm struggling to figure out a good replacement for Adam's apple.

Like, it has a scientific name, but "laryngeal prominence" is just such a mouthful & I'm honestly more looking for colloquial terms, possibly even different ones for each race.

Because, they'd obviously have thought of different ones independently. (Though, maybe not Gorons as I'm not sure if they'd have one as I tend to see them as being asexual by nature.)

It's… it's like the joke I made about “Shake the morning dew off the Sandelion’s petals” to mean "go pee" & the suggestion I made for the Don Dragmire bot with “Molduga” replacing fishes in “sleeping with the fishes/feeding them to the fishes” & “turn that Pico's Gift in (for Rupees)” rather than “cash in that check.”

It's like that. I'm trying to figure out colloquialisms.

Specifically for Adam’s Apple, even more specifically what the Gerudo & Sheikah would refer to it as. And, if they can be made to mimic pre-modern Swana (specifically Middle Eastern) & Asian (specifically Japanese) colloquialisms in style respectively, then that’d just be... well, it'd be incredible!

Because that's most relevant to my writing & I've been running into it as an issue interestingly often lately.

However, if you or the AI or whoever just so happens to point out other things that would logically have a different name in LoZ, then it would be very, very appreciated.

Like, this is an open request for any time, not just now, because this general thing can be a bit of a headache.

Now, this is by no means a demand & if you decide no, then I'm cool with this request being answered with a “Nah, not feeling it” or whatever.

As for your request, it is interesting trying to come up with new words to mimic what you are needing for your world. As someone from the Transformers fandom, the fact I know digits are fingers, servos are hands, spikes are dicks, valves are feminine parts, sparks are souls/hearts, a cycle being a hour, denta are their teeth, etc is incredible. It becomes a part of your language once you use it enough. I can read a Transformers story with ease without questioning what words mean what in their world.

Doing it for a race similar to humans but different is even more difficult. You have to look at their history, how far along tech wise they are, who you think would have discovered things and how they would have discovered it, their culture, their language... You have a knack for that!

I did put it through the ChatGPT for you, just to give you some ideas, but... It's very silly! Even if it looks silly, even the funniest things can spark inspiration. I'll comment when I have ideas of my own, but in the meantime, let ChatGPT make you giggle, relax, and see how... "creative" it can be.

anyway casually contemplating slightly expanded numpad designs that could pack calculator modes that I might find actually useful.

useful in this case meaning having at least two rows of display and supporting expressions using parentheses. Support for Bin, Hex, and Oct number systems, square, square root, value storage, and sin, cos, tan, and their inverses would also be useful. Having a Function key could easily allow access to more functions while keeping the total number of keys still relatively low.

could potentially have a pair of slide switches either under or next to display - one to swap number system between bin, oct, dec, and hex, one to swap angle system between rad, deg, and chr (single byte 0-255 angle representation).

figure a regular pi pico could probably easily run the whole thing, both the numpad functions and the calculator ones. Make it a pico w and it could easily also have bluetooth support. All the extra keys could likely easily work as media, utility, or macro keys when working in numpad mode.

A Color LCD (part 1)

Many years ago, I pulled an LCD out of a GPS unit from the days before cars and smartphones having navigation features. This LCD is a color LCD with a backlight. It’s a very different technology, and much more challenging to interface to. I can’t even find a proper datasheet for the module.

There are datasheets available for modules with similar part numbers. Based on the circuitry in the above picture, this looks like the closest pinout:

B&W LCD modules usually have a built-in charge pump to generate their needed voltages. Unfortunately, the datasheet also says this module needs those voltages supplied externally, and they’re a bit weird.

VDH: +8.3–+8.7 V @ 3.3 mA

VGH: +16.2–+17.0 V @ 0.23 mA

VGL: −8.35–−8.0 V @ 0.17 mA

VCC: +2.5–+3.3 V @ 0.22 mA (this is actually a normal voltage)

Fortunately, I don’t have to design and build a boost circuit myself; you can Just Buy voltage boost modules easily from many places. Getting a module to generate that negative voltage, however, is a lot harder. But it turns out that charge pump chips are A Thing you can Just Buy on Digikey. Sadly, charge pump chips tend to have fairly low output current capability, so while charge pumps could produce the high voltage for the backlight, it would require several and be kind of awkward.

So last week and this week, I finally sat down and learned enough about PIO on the Pi Pico to produce suitable timing signals for the module.

Great! I have a power circuit, I have logic signals, I have a suitable connector, now to see if I can display a picture. Well, one problem: I haven’t built something to hold the LCD. I don’t have a 3D printer, nor any CAD skills, so tonight’s project is to design in Adobe Illustrator a case for the module made of cardstock.

Pico, on his end, got out his spray-can, not willing to sit this one out.

Soft Pico: Sounds like that guy's itching for trouble. I don't care what his "good intentions" are, but NOBODY forcefully steals Baby Blue from me and gets away with it. In that case, I'm coming with you to get him back from those creeps!

Grace: Wait, really?

Soft Pico: Yeah! He needs my help, and I'm willing to have whatever assistance necessary to get it done!

Benjamin: In that case, welcome to the team, Pico!

The two shook hands, affirming their newfound alliance.

Soft Pico: Okay, where do we begin our search?

Benjamin: First off, we'll need to find whatever help we can get to counter Cam's own forces. You feel Ben will be alright before then?

Soft Pico: Hopefully so. If he's got other friends accompanying him, then it should be enough until we can find where this Cam guy's keeping him at.

Benjamin: I've also been asked by another -friend leading a revolution against Cam's "Funkin' Society" to keep an eye out for her friend while we're on the search. Cam's got a huge vendetta against him, considering he's trying to stop a bigger threat from destroying the multiverse.

Soft Pico: Bigger threat?

Grace: We'll tell you more along the way.

Soft Pico: Right! Let's not waste any more time!

Ben passed him one of the multidimensional watches.

Soft Pico: What's this for?

Benjamin: It's to keep your atoms from jazzing out while we're outside your dimension.

Soft Pico: Got it.

He put the watch on his wrist.

Soft Pico: Alright. I'm ready!

Grace: Alright! This way!

Soft Grace: Good luck!

Most of the group headed through the portal, though Benjamin stuck behind with Soft Grace.

Soft Grace: You're not going through with them?

Benjamin: I will in a moment.

He went to go give her a hug.

Benjamin: If it helps your self-esteem, Grace... I'd say you look great just as you are!

She smiled, slightly tearing up knowing she was still validated by others.

Soft Grace: Aww, thanks! Same to you, other Benji!

They broke their hug after a moment, with Grace gently stroking Ben's cheek.

Soft Grace: Once you've done what you needed to, you're welcome here any time, in my view!

Benjamin: Heh, thanks! Well, I've got work to do! Catch you later!

She waved him off as he leapt back through the portal to continue his mission.

Mini-Trivia

After the IAB! x Funkinverse events, Soft Grace switched in for Soft Pico in Benjamin's multiversal friendship group, having grown curious about other -friends after the X's destruction.

Following these events, Soft Pico and Soft Grace also made friends with Shaya (B3 GF), and Neo Pico & B3 Pico respectively.
