One of the interesting things about pirate media in general, and especially children's pirate media is the diversity of race, body type and facial features.
Pirates are generally coded as both 'ugly' and 'chaotic', so designers and casting directors don't feel the obligation to make them rigidly and socially beautiful.
Which means that on the one hand, yes, you end up with a lot of deliberately "gross" "ugly" character designs, but you also end up with characters that genuinely ARE diverse-- fat, skinny, broad, muscular, tall, short, REALLY tall, REALLY short, any color that a character can be.
And actually distinctive facial features, instead of the "standard" "pretty" features. Big noses, huge jaws, small jaws, small eyes, facial hair-- lots of different kinds of facial hair. Piercings!!
Finally finished my coat and corset so Fantasy Forest was a great excuse to get some pics~ I want to make a proper shirt for it next, still debating if I want to stick with trousers or add a hitched skirt? I'm not sure what will look best under the coat buuuuut I'm so happy with how it currently looks!
Much love to @lilypuddles for the photos, the wig and helping me make this thing
