Real-World Traffic Demo Reveals Energy Savings - Technology Org
Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers determined that a connected and automated vehicle, or CAV, traveling on a multilane highway with integrated traffic light timing control can maximize energy efficiency and achieve up to 27% savings.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers took a connected and automated vehicle out of the virtual proving ground and onto a public road to determine energy savings when it is operated under predictive control strategies. Credit: ORNL, U.S. Dept. of Energy
In a demonstration, a plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle in electric mode was driven down a busy corridor in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The test vehicle and the timing of traffic lights along the longitudinal route were controlled by ORNL-developed computer algorithms.
“The energy efficiency of the transportation system and the CAV itself were optimized by avoiding idling, hard braking and accelerating as much as possible,” ORNL’s Jinghui Yuan said. “With integrated optimization strategies, CAVs can achieve significant energy savings.”
Two control strategies were implemented on the traffic signals and the CAV and integrated into a cyber-physical system. They were first tested in a digital twin-based traffic simulation and ORNL’s virtual proving ground, the Connected and Automated Vehicle Environment Laboratory.

we spent eight fucking hours car shopping today but have finally returned with a new (used) car. it’s nothing exciting (I wish I could go electric but it’s just not practical right now) but it’s a make/model I’m familiar with, it won’t make me completely broke, there’s less than 60k miles on it, and I got the keys before I have to return my rental tomorrow. there was a solar eclipse while I was car shopping. we forgot to eat lunch in between dealerships. and I am still experiencing The Symptoms. surreal day.

I actually side with Toyota on this one, in spite of my passion for electric cars. Both our battery technology and our infrastructure need to be improved before we can go with a 100% electric automobile fleet. Meanwhile, I prefer plug-in hybrids as a bridge technology. Our plug-in charges at home, and handles most of our driving as an EV, carrying about 1/8 as much battery payload as a similar-sized full electric. And I don’t require major infrastructure changes in order to take a trouble-free vacation trip. And at least 75% of our miles are pure electric.
In terms of battery cost and resources used, 1 Tesla = 8 plug-in hybrids, for the same amount of lithium-ion batteries.
Or for fossil fuel consumption, 4 plug-in hybrids = 1 conventional automobile (assuming most of your electricity comes from non-fossil fuel sources)
Or for purchase cost, 1 Tesla = 1.5 - 2 plug-in hybrids. (Some other electric cars are quite a bit cheaper though)
NOTE: These are my own back of the envelope statistics. If you take repeated long trips, or your electricity comes largely from fossil fuels, a plug-in hybrid may not be much help. But the pure EV could look even worse by comparison.

When tested on the commuter route, starting with a fully charged battery and driving in the mode selected by the PHEV, the Peugeot and the Renault emitted 1.2–1.7 times the official CO2 (33–50 gCO2/km). They still performed comparatively better than the BMW, which emitted over 100 gCO2/km (3 times the official value). Activation of the BMW’s “anticipatory” mode was needed (by programming the route into the satellite navigation system) to reduce commuting CO2 by around half to 67g/km (2 times the official value). The necessity to use the sat-nav to reduce CO2 to levels closer to the other PHEVs tested is not ideal, as driver’s may not use the sat-nav on known routes, resulting in unnecessarily high CO2emissions.
In city tests, PHEVs powered by the engine emit 5–7 times advertised CO2(..)
P.S. In fact, PHEVs are still ICE vehicles that still use gasoline...
