Profiles in Villainy
Slithe
The self-proclaimed leader of the Mutant Army, the reptilian rapscallion known as Slithe had plotted to thieve the plans for the Plun-Darr weapon platform from King Claudius prior to the destruction of Thunderra.  Unable to obtain his prize, Slithe led his forces in chasing the Thundercats to their new refuge on Third Earth.
On this new and strange world, Slithe and his followers allied with the villainous Mum-Ra, unaware that he had unwittingly pledged himself and his army to be mere minions and foot soldiers for Mum-Ra’s plans of conquest.
Crass, unimaginative and cruel, Slithe made for a poor leader of the Mutant Army, but they followed him nonetheless, along with his chief lieutenants, Vultureman, Jackalman and Monkian.   Still, Slithe showed signs of cunning and his followers preferred him to the more demanding Mutant general, Ratar-O.
In the rebooted Thundercats continuity, Slithe is the leader of the Lizardmen and the first general of Mumm-Ra's army. He and his forces were responsible for the destruction of Castle Thunderra and acted as pawns in Mum-Ra’s plot to obtain the Sword of Omens and dominate Third Earth.
Actor Bob McFadden provided the voice for Slithe in the original series; whereas actor Dee Bradley Baker voiced the villain in the 2011 reboot.  Slithe first appeared  in the premiere episodes of The Thundercats, airing January 23rd, 1985.

Out this week: ThunderCats #1 (Dynamite, $4.99): Lion-O and the rest of the team return in a new series by the creative team of Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss. It sounds like the story will be a back-to-basics approach, with the ThunderCats crash-landing on Third Earth while being pursued by the Mutants of Plun-Darr — only to discover an even bigger threat in Mumm-Ra.
See what else is arriving in comic shops this week!

On January 23, 1985, The Thundercats pilot aired, which became the syndicated episodes Exodus/The Unholy Alliance and released later on video as the movie (also blended in with episodes Berbils and The Slaves of Castle Plun-darr). The pilot was filled with peril. It began with the cat-like Thunderians escaping to a distant galaxy as their home world Thundera explodes. As if that is not enough, the fleeing fleet is then attacked by their enemies "the mutants". In particular, they focused on the ship of the noble Thundercats in an effort to steal the mystical Thunderian artifact Sword of Omens. The leader of the Thundercat nobles Jaga is able to repel them, but at a cost. The ship's piloting system was damaged, so Jaga had to manually pilot the ship instead of being in suspended animation, the ship crash landed not on their originally destined planet, and Lion-O, the heir to the Thundercat throne, grew physically in his pod due to a malfunction. On the new world, Third Earth, the physically, though not in other ways, grown Lion-O takes his place as leader of the Thundercats that survived from the ship... Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra, WilyKat, Wily-Kit, and Snarf. Even then, they are still are not safe as the mutants Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman have tracked them. They are joined by a powerful ally in the form of Mumm-Ra of the Black Pyramid on Third Earth, who also wanted the Sword of Omens. The mutants were reluctant to join forces, but once Mumm-Ra damaged their space craft, they changed their mind. ("Pilot", "Exodus", "Unholy Alliance", Thundercats, TV, Event)

Since Mumm-Ra can sense the Sword of Plun-Darr, maybe Ratar-O was wrong that he didn't know it was there and he was just waiting for someone to unseal it for him.
Or maybe he was right and Mumm-Ra could only sense the sword once it was unsealed. But either way, this was inevitable. If the Thundercats hadn't gotten the sword, it would've been Ratar-O, and I'd bet Mumm-Ra would have a much easier time getting it from him.

MagiCat Queen and and Panthera
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is some similarity between the two characters (hard to tell if intentional or accidental). Makes one wonder if they could be related (I guess Panthera being an ancestor of the MagiCat Queen) in a SPOP (or MOTU) x ThunderCats (2011 or classic with elements of).
Though I wonder if the MagiCat Queen is indeed Catra's relative (mother or sister?), would Catra be also descendant of Leo? I guess then she inherited being a leonine (kinda) shortstack from him (I guess a recessive trait i the MagiCat Queen):
Tumblr media
It's not the first time there are odd similarities/connections between MOTU and ThunderCats (outside of even outright crossover)

Note
in Legacy they didnt use the same hammer for crafting the sword of omens then the one of plundar guess there goes the thunder hammer made the sword of omens theory
You’re right; I double-checked.
Also fascinating: it looks like the ~evil~ hammer appears to be lion-shaped compared to the simple tool used on the Sword/Gauntlet of Omens. I am delighted with these details.

Anon, I think your observation is perfectly fabulous and a credit to the fandom, so I’m going to award it the official thundersolstice blog title of:
ThunderObservation 003
Well spotted, fellow thunderfan!
Also somewhat related sort of:
Bonus headcanon: Bengali trains under Hattanzo, who ultimately enables him to use the 2011 Hammer of Thundera.
You know how Hattanzo/Drifter was hailed as “the greatest sword-maker of all time”? If any character has (or can obtain) a hammer/forge worthy of a title in Lion-O’s Thundera, it’s definitely him! I like to think young Prince Bengali becomes Hattanzo’s apprentice during or after the second season. It’d be a nice callback to Bengali’s skillset in the classic series (although I’d be delighted to see 2011 Bengali get a new journey the way 2011 Pumyra did, too!), and would provide an opening for a nice subplot centered on Hattanzo and/or Bengali and/or the Hammer.
I’ve got like zero canon material to backup the Bengali thing, but it’s not too much of a stretch to lay the Hammer of Thundera at Hattanzo’s feet, I don’t think.

Inter-stone relationships
So how do the four essence stones (power stones rewrite) interact with one another?
Harmonization
The four stones are intrinsically related to one another. While their abilities and spheres are completely different, they resonate with one another. Like how a flute, violin, trumpet and xylophone will sound very different but can play the same note. One stone can be used to see, find or connect to the others, as the Power stone helped find the Spirit stone. Because of this, it is only when all four stones are together that they achieve total capability. Whether it is safer to have the stones separated (where they become imbalanced by their counterparts and exaggerated, but weaker) or together (where no aspect dominates, but the power is immense and possibly misused) is a matter of much debate.
Fractals
As part of their inter-relationship, the stones tend to reflect the same pattern of four concepts, even on larger or smaller scales. Consider it like a fractal: if you zoom in or out on a part of the pattern, you find the same pattern again. So, for example, the four trials of the Spirit stone reflect and invoke the other four stones. A lot of my writings will be about how this fractal set of four shows up in other ways in history.
No Inherent Leader
No stone is actually more important or powerful than the others. Mumm-Ra made the Power stone the center of his gauntlet, with the other stones secondary, because of his own values. He believed “power isn’t given, it’s taken” and used force and violence to enact his will. Since the early Cats modeled the gauntlet of Omens after the sword and gauntlet of Plun-darr, they recreated the same system. And they perpetuated the importance of power in their defeat of Mumm-Ra and in the empire they established on Third Earth. It would have been entirely possible for a society to instead build a device that centered the Mind stone, or Soul stone, etc.
Spirit vs. Soul
Spirit and Soul are often used synonymously in English. So though I did my best to explain the difference in the original writing, I will add clarification here. The difference boils down to Inter vs. Intra. The spirit stone is about the bigger picture, it bends time and space, it places everything as part of a lager multiverse. For example, consider the elephants (who are concerned about balance with the wasps) and who see the value in destroying a tree to give light to a garden. And consider Tookit, who believes everything has a purpose. To most observers, these are morally different people and beliefs, but they reach the same spiritual conclusion: everything in the world is interconnected and has a purpose. On the contrary, the soul stone is all about individual self. It is about one’s own feelings, values, morals and identity. What qualifies as a “person”? How do you see yourself? What makes you who you are? These are all soul-related questions.

Okay, it's been a while but I'm back and ready to get going! So let's dive into episode 23: Recipe for Disaster!

Like I've been saying since episode 6: Rita Repulsa.

Even having regained the Sword of Plun-Darr, Mumm-Ra still can't confidently face Lion-O as himself. Because he's seen how Lion-O can overpower or outmaneuver him. So even though he's gained some ground, he still needs to rely on tricks.
