I've seen a lot of people say that Thundera was based on the Roman empire, and from what I've read about them while they do allow mlm/wlw relationships they were far from perfect. I won't go into it since I haven't finished this topic yet but what I want to ask is what are the cats views on LGBTQ as a whole including all of Thundera considering how conservative they are.
Ooooh I've actually been thinking about this! I always saw it as a mix between Greek and Rome. Greek architecture and Roman culture if you will.
However in Roman culture, it was more so as long as the... well there's not nice way of putting this, it's history. Men could only have relationships with enslaved men. And same sex relationships between women in Rome was documented as "un-heard" of, meaning it probably was put under a harsher lens.
In Thundera, I always headcannoned that gay relationships between peasantry were totally fine. Sure not everyone was in agreement, but it wasn't punishable by law. But with nobility and royalty, again, it wasn't punishable, but it was heavily looked down upon because the family tree needed to be continued, and well, two dudes can't do that exactly.
I'm not sure if Thundera nobility is super into adopting. We see that no one really spoke up against Tygras adoption, but that could also be because it was the king and queen, and no one would speak against them. But we also know Tygra was never going to be allowed to be King.
So Noble families would be quiet strict on who their children's partners would be, but I also don't deny the possibility of sham weddings being involved. Where two nobles would be wed, but spend most of the time with their lovers for the sake of publicity.
But overall, I'd love to hear everyone's opinion down in the comments! This is an interesting question!

In honor of this stage of the journey in LOTR newsletter, a couple of fic recs (mostly Thundera Tiger because that's who I am):
Ringing down the River by TT: a series about characters talking about the temptation of the Ring
Hunting by TT: Legolas and Gimli's perspective during the fight at Amon Hen
Unravelling the Tale by Nimue I Am: an extension of the Fellowship's journey down the river, with more focus on the friendship between Legolas and Gimli. There is an older archived version of this on AO3, but I'm linking the ffn version because it's been more recently updated.

Please may I recommend Fissures by Thundera Tiger
Gimli's rather unorthodox plans for the Glittering Caves raise a few questions (and more than a few concerns) about his friendship with a certain elf...
i love fanon calling gimli the “lord of aglarond” because aglarond is the name for the glittering caves in SINDARIN!!!!!!!! gimli brought legolas there and legolas said HOLY FUCK” and called it beautiful in his own language and gimli just adopted that!!!!!!!!! so now the love between them will carry on forever in name long after they’ve sailed away together!!!!!!!!! CAN ANYBODY HEAR ME

Angsty Train of Thought: do you think Tygra and Lion-O every had to do those royalty training things where they learn to resist torture if they ever get captured or be exposed to small amounts of poison to build up a tolerance to avoid potential assassination attempts. Given Thundera's conquest act and how they basically made an enemy of basically all other nearby animal species it wouldn't be surprising if stuff like that happened to past princes, so a I could see Claudus doing putting his kids through that as some was to "protect" them. Though thinking about it makes me wonder if Claudus's father did the same to him. I swear knowing that Thundera became an imperialist power makes me wonder how much generational trauma the royal family has. Maybe I've just been watching too much Apothecary Diaries.
I actually don't really think they would. Don't get me wrong if it had been a generational 'ritual' in a sense Claudus 100% would've. But I always feel like Thundera was way too arrogant as a nation to belive anyone would *try* and assassinate them. That or their medicine was far too superior for any lowlely outsiders poisons to do any harm.
And yet, that arrogance is what led to the fall of Thundera. They were too busy building walls to keep out everyone. They did not have the means to take out an enemy from the inside.

King Claudus, Lord Jaga, and their son Prince Lion-O.
I’m turning forty soon and never considered this before, but looking at these beautifully crafted images from the episode “Return To Thundera” made me think, were Claudus and Jaga a thing?
I mean, we never see Lion-O’s mother in the original series, they don’t even mention her, like at all! No Queen of Thundera. They could’ve utilized a concubine to supply the required heir, cause I am getting serious old man Yaoi vibes off of these two in retrospect.
