Cool Facts- Seen as the conservation icon pushing against climate change, the polar bear is the guardian of the north. Being the largest land carnivore, polar bears spend the majority of their lives patrolling the polar ice pack. Polar bears are mostly solitary, often fighting when encountering each other, other than females with their cubs. While polar bears often scavenge whale carcasses and small mammals during the summer months, when winter rolls around with the freezing of the ocean the polar bear becomes a killing machine. Capable of dragging animals as heavy as small beluga whales from the water, their main food source of seals are relatively easy to catch. Sadly, due to climate change the sea ice is shrinking and reducing the polar bear’s hunting grounds. Seen as sacred to many indigenous groups, conservationists are working on a worldwide scale to limit climate change and bring the plight of the polar bear to more people.
