This is a feel good 'we beat them' piece from 2021. Compare with numbers from the UN and the explosion of online sex work in 2020. The market for sex work online exploded, which was then filled by both legitimate sex workers, and digitally trafficked people.

The most common way women are targeted is through romance scams that groom the vulnerable woman to make her isolated and manipulatable:

I keep seeing exhortations for tumblr to fully bring back porn (which will never happen) and rebuttals about FOSTA/SESTA (which is one of several reasons why) and it reminded me of a recent-ish TAL segment about what happened when backpage got seized—specifically the story of one woman who was a victim of sex trafficking for seven years, escaped, and then no one would hire her since she'd been arrested for ""prostitution"" several times (a record that was never cleared when one of her traffickers eventually got arrested), so she turned to backpage for work.

and she was doing pretty damn well, putting herself through school, but when backpage shut down she found it increasingly hard to find/screen clients and the ones she found would try to haggle and would make scary demands. so the whole enterprise of consensual sex work became way less safe, and she made less money doing it and lost her house and car, and was basically doing sex work for longer than she otherwise would have been because the drop in income also robbed her of stability.

they also talk to one of the senators behind FOSTA/SESTA about all this and the senator literally does not care at all. as far as she's concerned, all of this is a success story.

In December, Georgia law enforcement announced criminal indictments for a labor trafficking scheme where workers from Mexico were brought to the U.S. for what they thought were decent, legal, jobs, then forced to dig up onions with their bare hands for 20 cents a bucket.

The fact that this “Operation Blooming Onion” is holding traffickers accountable is good news. The fact that this kind of abuse has gone on for years under the noses of our government is not.

Tell Congress. Transparency helps prevent trafficking.

The workers abused in Georgia came here on a program that allows U.S. businesses to contract with workers from overseas for a set period of time to come here and do jobs they say they can’t fill with people already in this country.

The program is massive and touches virtually every corner of the U.S. economy but is particularly important in the agricultural sector, where farmers say food would rot in the fields without the help of migrant workers. Yet, as data from the U.S. National Human Trafficking Hotline shows many of these workers on what’s known as H2-A visas face abuse and trafficking.

It’s long past time to fix the temporary work system and ensure that the food on our tables was not harvested by trafficking victims.

Via @PolarisProject Fear of Discrimination, Prejudice, and Violence One of the biggest obstacles that prevents people from reporting LGBTQ-related human trafficking cases is the social stigma against these populations. LGBTQ-identified individuals can face discrimination and prejudice based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, physical appearance, and adherence to gender norms. To protect against these injustices and violence, LGBTQ-identified individuals often stay closeted – keeping their identities a secret. By reporting a trafficking instance, they may fear that their LGBTQ-identity may be exposed. This especially occurs with LGBTQ youth, who typically rely on the emotional support and resources provided by their families. If “outed,” these resources and bonds may be threatened or withheld, and they may even experience violence against them by abusive or intolerant family members. It’s important to note that trans women of color experience disproportionately high rates of violence against them, especially in the commercial sex trade. Educating others and sharing resources about human trafficking is a productive first step. It is crucial to be able to identify a trafficking situation and know how to respond appropriately. Today is #worlddayagainsttraffickinginpersons . Ending human trafficking is one of the things I'm most passionate about. I was part of an anti trafficking organization in college, and continue to support efforts that help people escape these terrible situations and find a better life. I still try to find ways to support and be involved with these organizations even though I am no longer in an area that has a local branch. They may not know it at the time, but survivors already have very strong life skills. In short survivors are very equipped and capable of taking care of themselves as well as others whether or not they're out of "the life" yet. They've had to be. Therefore the narrative of the #abolitionist movement isn't or shouldn't be about "saving" anyone it's about giving a hand up. Remember survivors have a voice they're not voiceless maybe it's some aren't listening. The role of the abolitionists whether a survivor or not is to walk with newly recovering survivors in their healing process, not walk in front nor behind. It's also about helping survivors channel the survival skills already there into a positive. #SurvivorsHelpingSurvivors
