Clue (1985)
This is one of my all-time favorite films. I have no clue why. It might be the nostalgia factor. But I’m absolutely obsessed with it. I’ve seen it a million times, but I have never looked into the interesting trivia on its IMDB page, so this will be fun!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Awesome Fun Fact:
The color of each character's car is the same color as their playing piece in the game, and is introduced as follows: Colonel Mustard drives a yellow 1954 Cadillac Series 62, Mrs. White drives a black-and-white 1950 MG TD convertible, Mrs. Peacock drives a blue 1952 Packard 200 Deluxe club sedan, Mr. Green drives a green 1951 Plymouth Cranbrook, Ms. Scarlet drives a 1946 red Lincoln Continental, and Professor Plum drives a purple 1949 Pontiac Streamliner Station Wagon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prof. Plum: It’s frightened.
Tumblr media
Something I Already Knew But Maybe You Didn’t: When Wadsworth cuts the power to the house during his solving of the mystery, it represents the point of divergence of the three endings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amusing Fun Fact: Professor Plum indicates at dinner that he works for the World Health Organization, part of the United Nations Organization. This means he works for UNO WHO.
Wadsworth: Professor Plum -- you were once a professor of psychiatry specializing in helping paranoid and homicidal lunatics suffering from delusions of grandeur. Prof. Plum: Yes, but now I work for the United Nations. Wadsworth: So your work has not changed. But you don’t practice medicine at the U.N. His license to practice has been lifted; correct? Miss Scarlet: Why? What did he do? Wadsworth: You know what doctors aren’t allowed to do with their lady patients? Miss Scarlet: Yeah? Wadsworth: Well, he did. Miss Scarlet: Ha!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mrs. White: [after Mrs. Peacock swears that the reason she's being blackmailed is a vicious lie] Well, I am willing to believe you. I, too, am being blackmailed for something I didn't do. Mr. Green: Me too. Colonel Mustard: And me. Miss Scarlet: Not me. Wadsworth: [surprised] You're *not* being blackmailed? Miss Scarlet: Oh, I’m being blackmailed all right, but I did what I’m being blackmailed for.
Miss Scarlet: Well, to be perfectly frank, I run a specialized hotel and a telephone service which provides gentlemen with the company of a young lady, for a short while. Professor Plum: Oh yeah? [pulls out pen and a pad of paper] Professor Plum: What's the phone number?
Tumblr media
Wadsworth: The double negative has turned to proof positive. I’m afraid you gave yourself away. Colonel Mustard: Are you trying to make me look stupid in front of the other guests? Wadsworth: You don’t need any help from me, sir. Colonel Mustard: That’s right!
Tumblr media
Wadsworth: Mrs. White, you've been paying our friend, the blackmailer, ever since your husband died under, shall we say, mysterious circumstances? Miss Scarlet: Ah! [laughs] Mrs. White: Why is that funny? Miss Scarlet: I see! That's why he was lying on his back, in his coffin. Mrs. White: I didn't kill him. Colonel Mustard: Then why are you paying the blackmailer? Mrs. White: I don’t want a scandal, do I? We had had a very humiliating public confrontation. He was deranged. He was -- [points to head] Mrs. White: -- a lunatic! He didn't actually seem to like me very much.
Tumblr media
Miss Scarlet: Why would he wanna kill you in public? Wadsworth: I think she meant he threatened, in public, to kill her. Miss Scarlet: Oh. Was that his final word on the matter? Mrs. White: Being killed is pretty final, wouldn't you say? Wadsworth: And yet, he was the one who died, not you, Mrs. White, not you! Miss Scarlet: What did he do for a living? Mrs. White: He was a scientist, nuclear physics. Miss Scarlet: What was he like? Mrs. White: He was always a rather stupidly optimistic man. I mean, I'm afraid it came as a great shock to him when he died, but he was found dead at home.
Tumblr media
Mrs. White: I had been out all evening at the movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wadsworth: But, he was your second husband. Your first husband also disappeared. Mrs. White: Well, that was his job. He was an illusionist. Wadsworth: But he never reappeared! Mrs. White: [chuckling, admittedly] He wasn't a very good illusionist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prof. Plum: Maybe he was poisoned!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wadsworth: He decided to put his information to good use and make a little money out of it. What could be more American than that?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Col. Mustard: You lure men to their deaths like a spider with flies! Mrs. White: Flies are where men are most vulnerable.
Tumblr media
Mrs. Peacock: No, I just want to powder my nose. Thank you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wadsworth: Sorry!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wadsworth: The key is gone! Professor Plum: Never mind about the key, unlock the door! [smacks Mr. Green on the shoulder] Mr. Green: [grabs Professor Plum by the collar, throttling him] I CAN'T UNLOCK THE DOOR WITHOUT THE KEY! [releasing Plum, Mr. Green rattles doorknob] Mr. Green: LET US IN! LET US IN! Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlet: [on other side of locked door] LET US OUT! LET US OUT!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mrs. Peacock: Our lives are in danger, ya beatnik!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Communism is Just a Red Herring Fact: The line "Communism is just a red herring" is said in all three endings (twice by Wadsworth and once by Miss Scarlet). Not only is it is a pun (particularly after World War II, the Russian Communists were frequently called "reds", for example, the anti-Communist slogan, "Better dead than red."), but it cleverly refers to a MacGuffin (or a real "red herring") implemented by the screenwriters, because none of the murderers motives end up having anything to do with creating political conspiracy. There are various visual red herrings on-screen, such as a hammer and sickle on the shelf beside the torch Colonel Mustard finds, and a bust of Lenin in the attic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ESE: 125/100
50 +10 for Tim Curry +4 for the dogs +2 for the dog poo shoe +5 for Mr. Green’s obedience (”Sit! No, not you, sir.”) +1 for Mrs. Peacock’s glasses +5 for amazing one-liners +5 for the discussion about why Mrs. White’s being blackmailed -10 for homophobia -5 for The Three Stooges antics when Mr. Boddy’s secret is revealed +5 for not shouting +5 for confusion +5 for most hilarious pairings +10 for secret passages +3 for the ironing board +10 for singing telegram +10 for Wadsworth walking through the whole thing +6 for 3 different endings -10 because the timing makes no sense for Mrs. White to have killed Yvette +10 for Mr. Green going home to sleep with his wife +4 for Clue card credits

Burgers & Burnouts With a Deluxe Twist at the HOT ROD Magazine & In-N-Out 70th Anniversary Celebration
The year 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of our scene’s most influential publication, HOT ROD magazine. Incidentally, In-N-Out has an anniversary as well, as its first drive-in restaurant was born the same year: 1948. The happy coincidence led to a venture involving both entities, in the shape of a unique event “Celebrating 70 Years of Burgers and Burnouts.”
The late John Ewald and his brother Don have been known for their involvement with wediditforlove.com, a website devoted to early drag rails. A former track photographer at Lions Drag Strip, John enjoyed some success with his MasterCar dragster as well, which was fired up for the Cacklefest at sunset.
Southern California’s Pomona Fairplex and its historic Auto Club Dragway emerged as the perfect venue due to its historical ties with our scene. Think Grand National Roadster Show, L.A. Roadsters Show, Pomona Swap Meet, NHRA drag racing, Wally Parks NHRA Museum, and so on. The gigantic paved lot alongside the dragstrip played host to the one-day affair, which surprised everybody with a massive turnout of vehicles, both show contestants (more than 2,000) and drag entries (250). And that’s not counting the special displays. Part of the event’s allure was the fantastic exhibit of former cover and feature cars from the pages of HRM (and Deluxe!), including a pack of very historic 1940s and early 1950s cover and magazine cars lined up under a huge tent.
Back in 1967, Jerry Lipori and Steve Malise joined the Funny Car ranks with an unlikely contender: a Buick GS400 running a 430ci Buick V8, though most competitors preferred Hemis. The flopper was marginally successful with Bruce Bohen behind the wheel, running a best of 7.79.
Gathered in the pits, owners of vintage Funny Cars, front-engine dragsters, and AA/Fuel Altereds made their presence known by regularly running their V8s. But the best was yet to come: About a dozen of them congregated in front of the grandstands and started their engines together in the Cacklefest tradition. It was glorious. Add to the equation more than a dozen In-N-Out food trucks serving up fresh Double-Doubles to order, and you end up with a winning combination. Please let’s do this again soon!
With more than 2,500 specialty vehicles on-site, Burgers and Burnouts featured the whole gamut of the West Coast’s car scene, from street rods and muscle cars to old VWs and trucks. But Deluxe readers had plenty to enjoy, too, including traditional customs, hot rods, gassers, and front-engine dragsters.
With a Barracuda fitted with a 426ci Hemi behind the driver, Hurst created what would become the world’s most famous drag racing exhibition car in the 1960s, the Hemi Under Glass. Nine such Hurst-sponsored wheelstanders were allegedly built in total, with Mike Mantel handling the driving duty of this example in Pomona.
This Deuce is an accurate tribute to the Vulcans Victoria, seen in the Jan. 1961 issue of HRM. The original Lions Drag Strip regular used to run a ’51 331ci Hemi topped with a 4-71 supercharger.
Bruce Boardman’s Bad Obsession ’55 Chevy with 331ci small-block-Chevy power lines up against the ex–Gray Baskerville MV Automotive altered. Built in 1986 by friends without Baskerville even knowing it, the B/Altered entry is a tribute to the former Rollin’ Rice Bowl he campaigned in 1963.
The A/FX gang put on quite a show thanks to racers such as Glenn Gibbons and his Pouncin’ Poncho from Arizona. His ’64 Pontiac LeMans relies on a 455ci Olds V8 with Hilborn fuel injection.
Altered wheelbase, Hemi V8 (with 478 ci and 830 hp in this case), Hilborn injection: Jack Goodrich’s Outer Limits ’64 Plymouth has all the right A/FX ingredients.
Several drag racers elected to build cars around the new Ford Mustang fastback after its release in the fall of 1964. Les Ritchey entered the A/FX field in 1966, choosing a 427ci SOHC with Hilborn injection for motivation. This is a tribute to his ’Stang.
Jason Rupert, the 2018 California Hot Rod Reunion champion, delighted the crowd with his 270-mph Rolling Thunder Camaro, one of the fastest Nostalgia Funny Cars in the world.
A young Don Waldron had his Model A running by the time he was in college in 1968. He has kept the roadster since, rebuilding it three times. The gasser guru currently runs a supercharged 302ci small-block Chevy in his hot rod.
Just a couple months after meeting him at the CHRR, we ran into Vic Hager at Pomona with his immaculate old-school Model A roadster. “I built it to drive,” says Hager of the flathead-powered A, and he has done just that, driving it from his Bakersfield home to the Ventura Nationals as well as the anniversary show in Pomona. Watch for a full feature in an upcoming issue of Deluxe.
A handful of former Deluxe cover and feature cars made the trek to Pomona, including the Bill Kelly coupe seen on our Jan. 2016 cover (https://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/1509-historic-east-coast-1932-ford-three-window-coupe-back-on-the-street-after-years-of-hibernation/). In 1948, 15-year-old Kelly began building the coupe in Philadelphia, later installing a 1949 331 Cad V8. Note the Inglewood cheater slicks in the back.
Sebastian Rey’s Blue Bird ’52 Studebaker, another Deluxe cover car (May 2017) (https://www.hotrod.com/articles/this-historic-1962-studebaker-lark-gasser-was-a-different-kind-of-fatherson-project/) is parked with fellow gassers at Pomona.
Reaching even further back in Deluxe history is our May 2014 cover car, Dennis Jones’ ’55 Chevy, which remains in much the same condition as it was when his brother Bob raced it in the 1960s. Dennis figures the car has been on no fewer than five magazine covers, including ours and the Jan. 1977 HRM.
It all started with the remains of a five-window ’32 Ford purchased for less than $1,000 more than 40 years ago. Tom Leonardo still owns the coupe today, building his project on a tight budget. It features a 2 1/2-inch chopped top and a 327ci V8 in the spirit of the late 1950s/early 1960s hot rods.
Officially licensed by Ford, the new United Pacific Industries’ 1932 Ford truck body has been welcomed by the hot rod community. The company spent three years reverse-engineering the body’s various sheetmetal components for accuracy. UPI’s own project car with shortened bed utilizes a Super Bell I-beam axle and a 347ci small-block Ford.
Pete Chapouris’ 1932 Limefire roadster shook the hot rod scene when unveiled in the 1980s, running the quarter in the 10-second bracket at 130 mph, too. It keeps company with Gary Lorenzini’s Deuce coupe (redesigned by Thom Taylor), which he purchased in 1974. Both cars use supercharged 383ci-based V8 powerplants.
The flathead in Steve Lenain’s A/V8 roadster, complete with a late-1930s McCulloch blower, made it the perfect choice for our May 2016 “Flatheads Forever” Deluxe cover (https://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/1601-rare-1930s-mcculloch-supercharger-provides-inspiration-for-the-build-of-this-1930-ford-model-av-8-roadster/).
Larry Roller built quite a stunner over a decade ago, this 5-inch-chopped ’32 coupe now owned by Bruce Meyer. New York’s Rolling Bones handled the chassis, topped with a 327ci small-block Chevy. Blackwall tires on ’40 Ford wheels perfectly fit the theme of the mean Deuce.
“Hop in and drive it around the parking lot.” These two ladies happily accepted the offer of Jeff Martin, the owner of this channeled ’33 Ford truck, rolling on a set of narrow 21-inch vintage tires.
“Where Are They Now?” asked HRM on its Sept. 2010 cover. Well, in the case of Jeff Heller’s ’55 Chevy, it’s still around and looking mighty good. The genuine street machine hasn’t changed much since Gray Baskerville shot it for HRM in 1980, still wearing its colorful 1970s paint job and Center Line wheels.
Here is a genuine piece of HRM (and hot rodding) history: Bill NieKamp’s 1929 Model A graced the pages of HRM, Mar. 1950, as the winner of the first America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award at the National Roadster Show in Oakland. It reached 142 mph at El Mirage two years later. The track-nose roadster now resides at the Petersen Automotive Museum.
Speaking of HRM history, former and current members of the magazine’s staff took the main stage to share stories about the good ol’ days—and the fun we are still having today. From left: photographer Randy Lorentzen, Petersen archivist Thomas Voehringer, current HRM staffers Phillip Thomas and Jacob Davis, former editors Rob Kinnan and Drew Hardin, current editor John McGann, and former editor (and now senior VP and also Roadkill star) David Freiburger.
Jack Thompson’s ’27 Model T roadster graced the cover of HRM, Aug. 1958. Built by Thompson from 1954 until 1956, it was later restored by Rick Cresse and Gary Schroeder before being displayed at Pebble Beach’s Concours d’Elegance in 1997.
The Williams Bros. entered a stout contender at Bonneville in 1954, this Model A that went 159 mph courtesy of a 241ci Hemi V8. Parked in 1956, it would remain untouched for half a century. Collector Tom McIntyre eventually purchased the Dec. 1954 HRM feature car. It has been on the covers of both HRM (Oct. 2007) and Deluxe (Mar. 2018). (https://www.hotrod.com/articles/bonneville-record-setting-1929-ford-model-roadster-olds-powered-streamliner-remain-frozen-time
Say hello to Bernie Couch, who bought this ’32 roadster at age 16, in 1940. He ran it at the dry lakes on numerous occasions after the war, reaching 134 mph in 1949. He drove his Ford until 1952; it then sat for 30 years until he set on restoring it as seen here, with a 250ci flathead V8. The car made the Feb. 1951 HRM cover.
