Okay so a guy in my solid state physics class was telling us about this muon scanning startup he worked at, GScan, and I'm going insane. I don't work there and I have no stake in the company, financial or otherwise, I just need to tell you about it.
Tumblr media
Muons are short-lived subatomic particles, same charge as an electron but ~200 times more massive. On Earth, they're produced by cosmic rays colliding with the upper atmosphere, and they hit the ground at a rate of about ten thousand per minute per square meter.
They're moving extremely fast at ground level, like 0.99 c. So they careen right through matter, deflecting only very slightly around heavy atomic nuclei – they'll penetrate like a hundred meters into solid rock.
What do you do with this continuous shower of deep-penetrating charged particles, constantly blanketing every square inch of the Earth's surface?
Tumblr media
(source)
The classic thing is use them to image the inside of massive structures, like we use x-rays to look inside living tissue – except instead of generating them yourself, you just use atmospheric muons. Muon archeology is a whole thing, they've used it to find hidden chambers in pyramids and stuff. Neat!
But this one Estonian company is doing some crazy bullshit and I love it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sandwich anything between a pair of portable muon detectors and get full 3D imaging of the interior, with sub-millimeter accuracy, by tracking the minute deflection of muons between them. Samples that are WAY too thick for x-rays, made of literally anything. Just put some muon detectors on some two by fours in a warehouse and call it a day.
You can just. Image anything??? Anything you want?? Completely passively!! Just detectors! No particle source! Put them anywhere. The detectors themselves are a mature technology, the company's tech is in the algorithms they use to get this level of spatial and elemental resolution.
Tumblr media
You can detect failures inside cable-reinforced concrete bridges without cutting open the bridges.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Decommissioned Soviet nuclear submarine filled with concrete, with no drawings or documentation, that may or may not have spent fuel canisters in it? And you need to cut it up for storage? Just look at the muons.
One of the wackiest ideas is to put one detector under your bed and one on the ceiling, so you get a full 3D scan of your body every night, passively. I want one.

coming out of my well to shame the fandom re: treating Nico like he's from 1840 rather than 1940 in terms of living with medical innovations
Vaccines for the following diseases were available during this time:
Smallpox- first generation vaccines were available and work on second generation vaccines occured in the 1930s with production of an egg-based vaccine begun by the Texas Department of Health in 1939. DC schools required smallpox vaccination for children to be allowed to attend by 1930, so Nico would have gotten immunized for this even if he didn't get anything else.
Diphtheria- first vaccine was developed in 1913, then a cheaper version in 1924. Yep, it's the "antitoxin" they call for in Balto (1995)- it can be used to either treat active infection or immunize.
Pertussis (whooping cough)- first vaccine was licensed in the US in 1914, then another in 1931, and another that became the basis for the modern vaccine in 1932.
BCG vaccine for Tuberculosis (TB)- first available in 1921, but neither the US nor Italy mandated it. This vaccine is still given around the world today.
Tetanus ("lockjaw") - first vaccine was produced in 1924, then a more effective version in 1938. The combo DTP (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccine was first released in 1948 and was used all the way up to 1996 when a new, safer version was released.
Anthrax- the veterinary vaccine in use today is based on the one developed in 1935 in South Africa. The Soviet Union developed a human vaccine that was available beginning in 1940.
Yellow fever- the vaccine still in use today (17D strain) debuted in 1939.
The first rabies vaccine was developed in 1885, for crying out loud!
Penicillin was used to cure infections as early as 1930, though it didn't hit mass-production until 1945. Other antibiotics (Salvarsan and Prontosil) were in use in the early 1900s (by 1910 and 1935, respectively).
Thyroxin (1914) and insulin (1923) were known quantities for treating endocrine disorders.
Medical radiography (x-rays) was a thing before 1900. There were portable ECG/EKG machines as early as 1927.
Cocaine was taken out of Coke in 1903. Like, not even Maria di Angelo would remember that.
Yes, a whole bunch of things changed in medical science between 1942 and the mid-2000s- plenty of fodder for "Will blows Nico's mind with modern medicine." I will even provide suggestions!
Vaccines for major childhood illnesses: polio (1952), measles (1962), mumps (1967), rubella (1969). IMO the polio thing is way slept on given how big the March of Dimes got in the public consciousness.
Closed-chest defibrillation (1950s) and CPR (1970s for the public)
Organ transplants (1953)
Ultrasound (1949/1961)
Not giving aspirin to anyone under 16 due to Reye's Syndrome risk (1980s) and the advent of other OTC painkillers (ibuprofen, 1969; paracetamol/acetaminophen, 1952; naproxen, 1976)
Insulin that comes from genetically engineered E. coli instead of purified animal pancreases (1978) so as to keep allergic reactions from happening
Rapid strep or flu tests (1980s/1990s) rather than waiting days to culture stuff
If y'all want a "they took the cocaine out of Coke" moment, might I suggest "what do you mean cigarettes/asbestos give you cancer" and/or "they took the lead out of the gasoline"?
But yeah...we've made a lot of progress since 1942 but it wasn't "you got ghosts in your blood and bad air do some drugs about it" back then- not by a long shot.
Wah wahwah wah wah back in my day we scoured Wikipedia and the rest of the internet to do background research on fandom-related minutiae and we liked it

Cogs and knifes.
It all started back in your childhood. That’s where you two met, in middle school.
You were the weird kid, and Zak was the weakest one out of the boys. Both of you were the outcasts, picked on by the other kids.
Your relationship at the time was complicated. You didn’t see him as a friend, but neither as a stranger. You just yapped his ear off about your interests and he listened. It continued like that over the years. By highschool, you were still the weird kid, but on top of your class with no score left unfulfilled. And he was still on the quiet side, even though he became a walking pile of muscles with his interest in fighting sports.
Then, you got separated when college came. You followed your passion for science and technology, and he… went god knows where.
By the end of your studies, your parents died.
You loved them with all your heart, and they cared for you with theirs. While you did grief their dead, you acknowledge that the sadness was quite short lived. People would say it was greed that replaced your sadness if you haven’t found out about the riches they left you after five months, when you already moved on. They left you the old two-story family house and secret riches that would allow you to live comfortably for the rest of your life, and perhaps even the generations after you if you take care of it well. It was an easy decision to keep it a secret as your parents did, and your grandparents did before them.
You soon became the mad inventor you desired to be, focusing on your craft from morning well into the night in the basement of your small house which you made your workshop. It was better to keep yourself out of sight of your neighbors, especially since a lot of families lived in your area, with a lot of nosey kids and their nosey mothers.
When you two met again, it was like fate had planned it all.
You were just walking in the alleys, testing your new, portable x-ray device on the walls of the buildings. Most of the time there was nothing, but it was a good way of testing it. And you did find a quite big amount of spots with loose bricks that hid drugs. One way to hide business.
Just as you were going around the corner, your eyes met his dark ones. It was just a glance, like he was just looking at a bug passing by, but you recognized his towering form and unruly hair, smoking by the trash can. With a small call of his name, the rather strange and ‘peaceful’ relationship could start again.
It took a bit of dragging around. He always complained about not having time but you still managed to get him out somewhere at least once a week, though at the time you were sure he was part of a gang or some fishy business.
You weren’t far from the truth.
He ended up being a killer. A serial one at that.
But you weren’t one to judge. Half of your materials in your workshop are from the black market.
He became interested in your inventions, seeing them as an opportunity. Opportunity for more and efficient bloodshed. A deal was only natural. You fixed and made weapons for him, he brought you materials and whatever things he found he thought would be useful.
Things only lead you to be closer to him. You figured you were the only one who knew about his murders, and he was the only one who knew about your inventions that will probably help to end the world one day. It, of course, led to both of you opening up to one another in your own ways. Though, it was a bit unexpected when he moved in. How it happened you can’t bring yourself to remember but you figured you blurted something out when drinking tequila. Oh well, he was crushing on your coach most of the time anyways.
Later on, he helped you to uncover the secret tunnels connected to your basement.Your city has a history of mafia using underground tunnels for transport, though they were left unused for quite some time. With that, you decided to install a complicated mechanism for him to use when running away from the police. Just some doors and levers, easily camuflaged to make it seem like a dead end with a simple pull. You both liked to laugh while watching the cameras, the policemen standing in front of a dead end, all confused when they clearly remember there wasn’t one yesterday.
With each day and month, he just seemed to be getting more and more comfortable. And so did you. You created simple habits, like leaving him sticky notes for when he comes back from a killing spree, with a simple message like: “Dinners in the fridge.” and/or “Don’t forget to wash up before going to bed!” He tends to just pass out right after coming back, stinging up the house with the smell of blood.
And his habits… are something else. It was bad at the start, but it only got worse. Walking around the house only in boxers was relatively normal. It was the habit of sleeping in his dirty clothes, dirtying the floor of the house with mud and staining the clean couch and bed sheets with blood. And one beautiful morning, you woke up with him next to you like he doesn’t know what personal space is. Just like today…
You opened your eyes to the irritating shine of the sun through the stained glass of your window, catching the smell of blood and the quiet snoring too close to your ear almost immediately, heavy arms enveloped around your body.
It has become a usual occurrence to wake up next to your serial killer roommate/ friend, always laying on the side closer to the edge. You did make a remark once that he could lay down on the left side if he so wishes to sleep in your bed, but it looks like that went in one ear and out the other as usual. Or perhaps he just enjoys laying on top of you and practically cutting off a proper flow of air to your lungs.
With a sigh, you pushed against the bicep of his arm, only for a grunt to leave his lips and tighten the arm around your shoulders, like you were some kind of plushie for his comfort.
“Zak…” You called out quietly to the heavy body with another push, voice laced with sleep. The body remained where it laid, this time without even an attempt to respond. There is a 50% chance he came back less than three hours ago, all tuckered out.
You laid there for the next few minutes, slowly waking up and getting ready for a battle that might end up with you finally getting out of bed or getting up by 12 - 16pm.
You manage to push his arms lower, slipping up from his grasp until his arms tighten again, right at your hips. With a frustrated sigh, you smack his arm which barely disturbs his beauty sleep, simply moving his head to lean against your belly.
“You can sleep all you want but could you let me go, please?” You said quite aggressively, attempting to force his arms to at least ease up around you.
“No.” He stated as if you asked a stupid question, voice raspy. With a tug of his arms, your morning coffee ended up being an afternoon one. At least it didn’t end up with an evening tea instead.
It was strangely peaceful after. Doing normal things like folding laundry, cooking dinner, creating and fixing deadly weapons that will cause thousand deaths…
This is how you live with your housemate serial killer. Staying up late into the night, cleaning blood from his shoes off the floor, scolding him and forcing him to do the groceries after. This might have not been the life you imagined, but there is a slight hope for it to last for a long time, especially in peaceful moments where you just both watch Tv in silence, like you used to back in high school.
You wouldn’t change anything about your life now.

Trauma Code: A Hero in Love
Tumblr media Tumblr media
genre: workplace romance, comedy, mutual pinning, slow-burn, banter, suggestive
4.2: Code Blue – Parental Unit
Later that week, the trauma department was in chaos. A sudden multi-vehicle collision had brought in a wave of patients, and the team was moving like clockwork under pressure. Shouts echoed across the ER, machines beeped in warning tones, and gurneys rolled in one after another.
In the middle of it all, Dr. Baek Kanghyuk barked orders like a general on the battlefield.
“Get vitals on Bed 6 now!” “Where’s the portable X-ray? I asked five minutes ago!” “Who let this patient sit without oxygen? Are we running a hospital or a convenience store?”
The atmosphere was tense. A young intern flinched at his tone and nearly dropped the chart in her hands.
Then, like clockwork, Dr. Song Hyejoo appeared at his side.
Without saying a word, she walked up behind him and handed him a fresh cup of coffee, still hot. Her other hand gently reached up to adjust the collar of his scrub top, which had been askew from the rush. Kanghyuk barely paused, taking the coffee with a short grunt of thanks, his eyes still scanning the incoming stretchers.
But the effect was instant.
His next order came out just a bit more calmly. His shoulders relaxed—just barely, but noticeably. And when he turned to check on the intern he’d startled, his voice was lower, softer. “You okay?” he asked.
The intern nodded quickly, almost too stunned to speak. Hyejoo gave her a reassuring pat on the arm before turning back to join another triage.
In the breakroom, a few of the nurses and residents peeked through the glass window, having witnessed the whole interaction.
“Did… she just fix his collar and give him coffee mid-chaos?” “She really said: chill, honey, you’re scaring the children.” “I swear she’s the only one who can calm him down without getting yelled at.” “Yeah, well, when mom’s in the room, dad behaves.”
Jangmi, sipping from her water bottle, raised an eyebrow. “Give it a few more weeks. They’ll be holding hands over a shared chart.”
Jaewon grinned. “Not if Dr. Baek combusts first trying to flirt without looking like he’s flirting.”
Gyeongwon, not even looking up from his tablet, muttered dryly, “Too late. Man’s already down bad.”
The group erupted into hushed giggles before scattering back to work—each secretly hoping for the next “mom and dad” moment to unfold.

benjamin rosales
appearance:  looks like manny jacinto — warm,  sun-kissed skin,  kind eyes that always seem to take in more than he lets on,   &  an easy,  disarming smile that softens the hardest moments.  often has a bit of dust or dirt on his rolled-up sleeves,  a sign of always being in motion.
role:  logistics coordinator for a partner ngo working alongside doctors without borders.  responsible for managing supply chains,  ensuring medical supplies  &  equipment reach the field in chaotic,  resource-scarce environments.
backstory:  born in iloilo  &  raised in pasig,  the eldest of five.  he studied engineering at in the philippines before co-founding a tech startup in california.  after burning out  &  walking away,  he pivoted to humanitarian logistics,  drawn to work that felt urgently real.
personality:  thoughtful,  grounded,  a little flirtatious in quiet ways.  dry humor  &  calm under pressure.  he reads the room easily  &  rarely draws attention to himself.
connection to samira:  they meet during samira’s brief stint with doctors without borders ( which takes place technically in the future, after she's finished her residency) in the eastern visayas region of the philippines,  shortly after a devastating typhoon.  she was deployed to help stabilize patients amid a post-storm spike in infectious disease,  especially tuberculosis — which remains one of the most persistent public health crises in the philippines,  with the highest incidence rate in asia.  he coordinated critical deliveries:  oxygen tanks,  medications,  portable x-ray units when possible — things she couldn’t do her job without.  from the first moment,  he called her ❝doc❞ — a teasing,  steady presence beside her in the chaos.
memories with samira: they unexpectedly fell crazy in love,  even in that short window of time.  something about the urgency of the work,  the long nights with generators humming,  the quiet moments between surges — it stripped everything else away.  they’d share stolen cups of lukewarm tea,  talk logistics like a language only they understood,   &  laugh in the dark when they should’ve been sleeping.  it wasn’t supposed to be anything.  but it became everything. they haven’t seen each other since,  but every so often,  samira’s phone lights up with a message:  hey,  doc.  you okay over there? —  &  for a second,  it’s like no time has passed at all.

What are Osiris and saints opinions on the tail? Both as part of his biology and also as part of their lives as partners with their tailed love
Generally, they're fairly accepting and have adjusted easily to having the tail be apart of their regular lives. Though, it does come with its occassional complaints. For the most part, it hardly causes any issues, Ruxiz isn't really bullied for the thing except from snobby Guardians. Getting to know how to move around the house to not knock things over was a struggle, especially since Osiris constantly had books and important documents settled just at tail height. They did have to make some adjustments, however. -More consistent cleanings, pulled/fallen feathers make a messy quickly when they're left out and not tended to. Ruxiz usually stays ontop of this, but sometimes the other two handle it.
-So many broken cups/datapads/items when they lived together the first few weeks. Eventually it becme a habit to live things either lower or higher.
-Care routines, feathers need to be preened, adjusted, and fixed throughout his lifetime. New feathers grow and old ones fall out, particularly around spring and winter, so he'll usually spend a few hours with one of them to tend to it if he needs help.
-Learning how to cuddle, eventually they came to the realization it doesn't hum to put weight on it so cuddle sessions have become easier. (Osiris will never admit to waking up hugging it multiple times.) (Saint constantly complains about feathers in his crevices.) -Cleaning products for it.
-Being careful to not bend or snap any of the feathers, especially when sitting close together or sleeping. There are however more positive things with it!
-Osiris has never run out of his fancy quills as he'll treat one of Ruxiz's fallen ones and use it when another breaks.
-Portable blanket all the time.
-Shade/hiding from rain/diy fan it helps when the weather is particularly nasty.
-It acts like a weighted blanket, the sleeping has definitely been more comfortable after some adjustments. All-in-all, while it was certainly an unexpected change they adopted the ways in handling it quickly and were able to make changes that help keep up with Ruxiz's particular needs.
Biology wise, Saint is always hassling into the Trials to see how it was meant to be used in combat, he tries not to think of the science or the evolution behind it and instead insists Ruxiz allow him to get him armour for it. Osiris, however, finds it incredibly fascinating and certainly spent many hours simply studying and foguring out the possible evolutionary process behind the tail, especially for an immortal species. He's spent countless days in the Infinite Forest, bringing Ruxiz to various simulations to test to usage of it and to see it in combat.
Often Ruxiz woud simply have a nap as Osiris made detailed writings and notes about it on various parchments and datapads. When he got more access to advanced equipment, he'd often synthesize Ruxiz's blood and other things. He took multiple X-rays when he had the time, Osiris is planning to launch a research paper on it, to get his head back in the game and share his unique findings. Ruxiz often entertained this.

So, since I'm listening to the blue beetle radio show and I like listening things and am a bit of a power scaler, I decided to figure out the golden age Blue beetles equipment and abilities across all his original golden age appearances, this is what I got so far
Blue Beetle powers abilities and equipment
Tumblr media
GENERAL
(Abilities)
•1930s police training
•Vitamin 2x (The vitamin gave Danny increase speed and strength, a healing factor, heightened senses and enhanced intellectual capabilities)
(Equipment)
•Practically indestructible cellulose suit
•Basic handgun
•Blue Beetle signal
•Beetlemobile
RADIO SHOW
(Abilities)
•Training from Houdini
•Jiu-Jitsu knowledge
•can glow under certain conditions (see notes at bottom)
(Equipment)
•Invisibility elixir
•Portable audio recorder
•X-ray camera
•Electric ray gun
•Miniature TV set
FOX COMICS
(Abilities)
(Equipment)
•The Beetle bird
HOLYOKE
(Abilities)
(Equipment)
COMIC STRIP
(Abilities)
(Equipment)
EXTRA NOTES
•Dr Franz Is someone who consistently assists the beetle and notably in the radio show After creating and giving Dan Garrett vitamin 2x, Dr Franz discovers a way to remotely empower Dan with what he calls "vigor", this giving Dan vigor, causes The Vitamin 2x in Dan's body to start working overtime making him even stronger faster etc etc but also causing him to quite literally glow, almost like a human glow stick or flash bang
•The armor is made from a chainmail like cellulose material that practically is indestructible however has an upper limit and although is a great shield for piercing attacks, Dan is still susceptible to blunt force trauma particularly from heavy makeshift melee weapons, also, The opening in the face of the costume is an actual potentially exploitable weakness, his face is unshielded and in the radio show at least it's heavily implied that there was a high chance for Dan getting himself killed by gunshot of the face
•The Blue Beetles armor has an asbestos lining, making him resistant to fire and immune to his own electric ray gun which previous could have cooked him alive

Title:By The Horns
Date:July 14th, 2023.
Series:The Blacklist
Category: Finale fix-it fic
Main characters: Donald Ressler, Raymond Reddington
Rating: PG-13
Tags: The Blacklist, Redarina (implied)
*I made up the quotes from Liz in here because I figure they must have had these conversations, even if we didn't see them on screen.*
It was damn lucky that he'd come in a helicopter. As tiny as it was they managed to get Reddington onto the collapsible emergency backboard, and maneuvered him inside. Donald Ressler got Reddington to a medical center inside of 20 minutes of noticing the seemingly dead man twitch.
Now Ressler sat in a side room off of a short hallway. Calling it a waiting room was too generous a term for this tiny little emergency medical center. His elbows rested on his knees and his forehead in his hands. He was shaking, and his vision was off somehow, as it had been since he found Reddington stomped into the ground by the bull. A tornado of conflict like he'd never quite known ran through him. He should be doing something else. He should be calling Cooper back. That wail that had come from Dembe when he'd told them he was standing over Red's body.
But then the twitch, the pulse check, the noise of the helicopter and the urgency of the doctors and nurses. He hadn't had a chance to call them back, to tell them that the man was still alive.
"Not yet," a voice in the back of his head whispered.
Reddington might not make it. Ressler would wait for the doctor to give him some news first.
"There's another reason," the same voice in his head responded.
Shut up, he told it. Are you the devil or the angel on my shoulder?
The voice smiled back. It had Reddington's smug little smile.
The Doctor who had taken Reddington into another room off the hallway charged back out and began loudly calling for the attention of everyone in spanish. He pointed to different people in turn, demanding something. Most people shrugged or shook their heads, but some responded with at least one letter of the alphabet and Ressler understood that.
"A…".
"AB…".
He charged to his feet and quickly advanced to the doctor. "Blood types? Is that what you're asking for? Blood types??! I'm B negative!"
Ressler proffered his arm and slapped the inside of his elbow. "B negative! We're a match! We've done a blood transfer before!"
"Yes, yes!" The doctor grabbed his arm and ushered him into the room where Reddington lay on a stretcher. An oxygen mask was over his face, a brace around his neck, a heart monitor was beeping threadily, and a battered looking portable x-ray machine was being maneuvered over him by two nurses.
Ressler was ushered into a chair next to Reddington, and in short order Resslers blood was trailing through an IV tube into Reddington's arm. The beep of the heart monitor became stronger, more certain of itself. Red's chest began to noticeably rise and fall, something that Ressler hadn't been able to see out in that field.
The nurses finished their scans of Reddington's body and left. They were suddenly alone in the small, cramped room together, with the beep of the monitors and the ticking of a large wall clock. Resslers slow, controlled blood loss was combining with jet lag, and taking its effect on him. He felt drowsy and light, as if he was floating. He found himself looking over at his long-time nemesis, battered and bloodied, unconscious beside him. What a long road this had been. There had been so much loss. Liz. Where did it all end?
There were things he should be doing, like making that phone call. Why wasn't he?
"It'll limit your options. Wait. No one knows but you."
Son of a bitch. It out and out sounded like Reddington in his head now.
He drifted for a bit, not the least bit comfortable with deciding not to decide. Wait and see. Wait for the doctor. Ignore the fact that Red's condition should have nothing to do with Resslers' job.
The doctor returned, going to the wall and turning on a light board. He put up an x-ray of Reddington's skull, and began talking and gesturing to it. When he paused to look back at Ressler, he took in the other man's complete lack of comprehension. After a moment of hesitation, the doctor pointed to Reddington's nose area on the x-ray. He held out his fist horizontally, with the thumb extended to the side. Then he turned his fist so that the thumb was pointed up. He pointed to the area on the x-ray over Reddington's left eye, another place that was still bloody on Reddington's face. Again he started with the thumb extended to the side, and turned his fist so that the thumb was part way up.
"Ok, I got it. Injured, but not so bad."
The doctor put up another x-ray, and pointed his finger down the spine, continuing to talk, but not stopping there. Red's ribs and left forearm each got a big thumbs down, not that Ressler needed that interpretation. He could see for himself the shattered bones in the image. He shifted in his seat, registering his own sore ribs, thanks to Red's marksmanship just days ago. He didn't want to think about that. The voice in the back of his head had been all too convincingly suggesting that in Red's shoes, Ressler would have had to pull the trigger on Hudson himself.
The doctor moved on to an x-ray of Reddington's pelvis, but after just a moment he took it down again. He began flipping through the folder of x-rays in his hands, muttering to himself. He took the X-ray of the pelvis, and compared the numbers on it to the numbers on several of the other x-rays. He seemed confused. Then he left the room.
Donald waited, blinking hard and trying to shake off the faint dizziness. The clock on the wall told him it had been just over an hour since he had first found Reddington in that field.
The doctor returned with a younger woman, in different colored, more decorative scrubs. He put the pelvis X-ray back on the wall, and pointed at it accusingly, seemingly demanding something from the woman. She took the X-ray down, and again compared the numbers on it to the other x-rays. Then she put it back up, gesturing to it and speaking in a deliberately reasonable tone of voice. The doctor cut her off heatedly, gesturing to Reddington and back to the x-ray.
"What's going on?" Ressler leaned forward in his chair, reminding them of his presence.
"Ah. English." The woman spoke haltingly. She pointed at Reddington. "Friend?"
He stared hard at her for a moment. Then raised his fist horizontally, with his thumb out to the side.
"Ah," she replied, though her expression was clearly confused. She pointed to the X-ray, and then pointed to Reddington, and fumbled for the english words. "...tr….uhm…g…ch, change?"
He looked at her blankly, and shook his head that he didn't understand.
She turned back to the light board, and moved Reddington's pelvis x-ray to the side. She shuffled through a folder of x-rays in her own hands, and put up two more x-rays, both of them pelvises. She pointed to the first one, which was longer, narrower, with a smaller oval in the center, mostly taken up by the tail end of the spine. Then with the same hand she reached down and seemingly grabbed her crotch, Michael Jackson style. Ressler blinked, hard, and leaned back, baffled.
The woman pointed to the second new x-ray, where the pelvis was shorter, wider, and had a larger oval in the middle with far less of the tail of the spine showing in it. She then pointed to her midsection, and with her arm drew the shape of a pregnancy belly in the air in front of her.
"Yeah, I do know that. Men and women have different shaped pelvises." Basic forensics had been a long time ago, and he'd never had to make the identification himself, but in theory he could.
The woman slid the two x-rays apart, and popped Reddington's in between them. Then her finger shifted back and forth between all three.
Reddington's x-ray was in between, literally and descriptively. Wider, but also taller. A larger oval, with less tail bone in it. The areas that made the pelvis look taller had different levels of brightness on the outer edges, which Ressler knew from looking at his own x-rays over the years denoted bone growth.
But that large oval in the center, with the small amount of tailbone. That was distinctive.
"No," he said. He pointed at the X-ray, pointed at Reddington, and shook his head. "That's not his x-ray. Obviously."
The woman also pointed to the X-ray and to Reddington, and nodded her head insistently. She took the pelvis x-ray down, and lined it up in her hand with the skull x-ray, the arm x-ray, and x-rays of Reds clearly broken leg after it. She pointed to the upper right corner where the numbers were, and Donald could clearly see that the numbers were sequential. Each x-ray changing by only one number. The pelvis x-ray belonged in the middle of the bunch. He stared in confusion.
The doctor spoke up again, sounding annoyed and arrogant. The woman slapped the pelvis X-ray back up, drawing her finger around the oval in the center emphatically. She pointed to tiny, long-healed cracks that showed around the oval, speaking to the doctor sharpley, and again drawing the pregnant belly in the air in front of her. She pointed at Reddington, threw her hands up in finality, and stalked out of the room.
There was an awkward silence. Then the doctor shuffled his files, stared at the floor, and left.
Ressler sat alone again in the room with Reddington, looking at the X-ray in confusion and dizziness. A group of nurses came, bringing him some orange juice. They quickly and efficiently cut off most of Red's clothing, put his arm in a cast, and bound his leg in a brace. They elevated the bed and carefully supported Red's unconscious upper body as they wrapped his ribs.
Red's entire upper back and the backs of his upper arms were covered in burn scars.
"My father died in a fire when I was 4. He was fighting with my mother. I think Reddington was there."
Liz.
"He killed your mother right in front of you, you tried to kill him for it. Why are you forgiving him now?"
She hadn't answered him, that last time that he spoke to her, in his hospital bed just hours before she died. He never did learn why she backed down on going after Reddington for the seemingly unforgivable act of killing Liz's mother.
But there was that letter that Dembe had given to Elizabeth when he wasn't supposed to. It had seemed to cause such a rift between Red and Dembe. A secret, THE secret, revealed to Liz, finally, on the last day of her life.
Donald Ressler was not by any means stupid or slow. That damn voice in the back of his head was putting the pieces together, but the rest of him was resisting. He looked at the man in front of him, whom he'd been chasing for 15 years. It couldn't be, could it? It just wasn't possible, Reddington was far from being celibate. Someone would know, someone would talk.
"CRISPER gene editing was in use 20 years before anybody thought it was. Men can be implanted with uteruses and carry babies to term. Hooker robots. What exactly isn't possible, Donald?"
No. Not this. It couldn't be.
Alexander Kirk let Reddington go. Reddington would never say why.
Damn it, it fit. It fit so perfectly. It explained every. Damn. Thing. Why Reddington would give his very life to protect Liz, why he forgave her, and only her, every single time.
What the hell?! What the actual hell was he going to do with this??! It just couldn't be right!
A ringing cell phone made him jump, and he fumbled for his pocket one handed before realizing it was coming from the pile of Reddington's clothing nearby.
Shaken, he flipped open the basic phone, seeing the identifying name come up at the same time that the call became active.
Agnes.
"Pinky??! Pinky!!"
Away from the speaker for a moment; "He picked up! I told you! Pinky?? Pinky, say something! PINKY!!" She was escalating into higher panic with every plea.
Agnes. His goddaughter. That bright, beautiful little girl that was the last surviving piece of Liz.
"Not the last, Donald."
He cleared his throat, and spoke her name, in a voice that was clearly not the one she wanted to hear.
"NO! NO, I WANT PINKY! SAY SOMETHING PINKY, PLEASE!! " She was screaming now, and he could hear Cooper in the background, sounding tearful himself, trying to calm her.
Agnes and her Pinky were so close. Closer than Red and Liz had ever been. And he might actually be her Grand….oh god. The implications of it swirled around his brain. Even the lowest criminal, if they qualified as human at all, they couldn't not love their kids. Jesus, no wonder. Now it all made such terrible, tragic sense. Liz. Reddington should have told her.
"Cooper…Agnes, listen…" he tried to cut through her hysteria.
"Ah…nez…" Resslers' head snapped around at the muffled voice. Reddington, one eye flickering slightly, the other swollen shut, was trying to lean his head within the neck brace towards the phone.
"Hang on", he told them all, and pulled Red's oxygen mask just slightly offside, to hold the phone to his face.
"Ag..ness?"
"Pinky??! Is that you??!"
"Izz me…Izz you?"
"Oh God, oh God. Pops said a bull attacked you. He said you were dead! I told him I'd just talked to you!" She'd settled into sobbing her words out.
"Well zaz bullshi'. Heh. We gonna have burgers nex' time."
Bloody, bruised, and bound, Raymond Reddington still managed one of those little grins. Asshole.
"I love you so much, Pinky. Please come home. Don't stay away, just come home."
"Love you, see you zoon."
Ressler took the phone back, and clearly so did Cooper.
"Donald? What the hell??"
"Sorry, I..I really thought he was gone. Then I had to get him help…"
"I had to wait for Dembe to be sedated before I could come home. God, I've got to go back and tell him."
"Yeah. Cooper?"
"Yes?"
"…. I didn't call anyone. I'm here on my own."
There was a long pause of understanding.
"…. You're far from home Donald. Way out of our jurisdiction. I don't know what you can or can't do, or what you want to do. I only know what I would do in your place. I never want to hear her like that again."
"No. Me either."
"This isn't a bureau phone, Donald. This conversation didn't happen. The last one we had earlier, when you did call on a bureau phone, stands."
Ressler closed Reddington's phone.
Red was watching him out of one bleary eye, which seemed more alert by the second. He noticed the IV of blood connecting them.
"Full circle?"
"10 years…not that I really think I ever owed you anything. Except maybe a goodby."
He looked down, not sure where to go from here. He had committed to a course of action with Coopers unspoken consent and support. He was going to take no action at all.
There was no reason for him to stay here now. He could walk out, and Raymond Reddington would remain dead to all the world, with one hell of a tall tale about how he'd died gone out into the world, via the FBI.
Red watched him, picking up the situation easily. Softly, he asked; "Why?"
Red waited, the silence pregnant with tension.
Donald didn't know what to say. He wanted to talk, he wanted to question, and he wanted to forget.
"What…what is Agnes's blood type?"
"Why would you…." Red's working eye had finally managed to focus behind Ressler, to the light board on the wall, where the image of his own pelvis was brightly lit. He was quiet for a minute, and then spoke slower more carefully than he had before.
"I knew how you felt about 'lizabeth, before she did. Before you did. I knew if I said anything good, she'd run the other way."
"So you made fun of me for eight years? Gee, thanks. Why'd you keep it up?"
"Habit. I wish you a good life, Donald."
"Yeah, you too. Red."
The end.
Note; The show is over. They can't say this didn't happen.

Live Reading: The Salt Miracles
I am only doing this for The Salt Miracles and not the other stories in The Winter Spirits because it's too much effort and I'm already going insane. I'm also going in 100% blind, I have absolutely no idea what it's about or whose perspective it's following, but my lord am I nervous.
I haven't even started yet but I just realised I've been calling it The Salt Mines by accident and put it in a twitter post oops-
OOO IT'S SOMEONE NEW
I STILL HAVEN'T STARTED READING YET BUT I SAW THEM REFERENCE A PRIEST AND NOW I'M GOING INSANE I NEED TO BE SEDATED
I'm chewing on glass and gnawing at the bars of my fucking enclosure
This (not) reading is more indicative of my mental illness than my actual diagnoses
If St Hilda is a fucking asylum I'm going to commit several crimes
I already love Mhairi she's so fun
Wait why is it changing to another dude Mhairi was fun :((( ik I'll probably like Flint but Mhairi is cool and I want her to write a proper female mc for once
Wait wait wait if the salt is pink it's probably Himilayan, and that along with Russia was where Mori said there was a weird no-clairvoyance zone thing so ??? I'm going to lose my marbles
Ohh nvm it's algae, that would've been cool
Okay Flint is also a priest, we have two priests now
"... I've been, you know, head first in a bucket the whole way" yeah okay this is a Pulley protag and I love him
" 'A whole...Christmas selection?' 'Nuts' " that may just become my new Twitter bio (probably not I like my Glass Onion reference too much)
He has a portable camera so this is probably taking place in like the twenties, but Kodak as a company was founded literally the same time tlfop was happening which is funny
Motherfucker are we getting animal-human hybrids???
I like fog as a metaphor, especially in tlfop, so I will probably write out something about it later
"...beehives, or cairns (graves)" this sounds like when Mori threatened Ito's wife who was allergic to bees
Why tf are there pilgrims??? Ik they're not like the Mayflower types of pilgrims, but what kind of religious journey thing are they doing???
I also want to write about the complete lack of respect for government officials and just general authority from the pulleyverse protags bc none of them have any fucks to give about authority figures
"...in his unofficial capacity as the bishop's shoulder-angel" PLS-
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was mentioned and now I'm 1.) thinking about tlfop again, and 2.) am fairly certain that this story takes place not far from the events of tlfop, because the first Sherlock Holmes book was published in 1887 and he references them as being "new:
"...now the bishop didn't believe in miracles"
"I'll be Eve in a cider factory" tbh I don't understand what that means too well rn but I love it regardless (ik Eve bit the apple and all that jazz I just can't wrap my brain around the metaphor please don't explain the Bible to me)
I auto-filled an Irish accent for Kerryn in my brain so when he called Flint "Father Kang" I thought he meant "King" for a minute
Okay so it starts December 18th, which is also the date that Mori said he would come back to Japan if I'm not mistaken??? (Edit: I WAS RIGHT AND I FEEL LIKE GOD)
But I must be slightly off because X-rays weren't invented until 1895 :(((
Also I know Kerryn is probably the secondary lead but there's something off about him I don't like, I can't put my finger on it
Either Ms. Pulley messed up her math or I don't know what an advent calendar is, because I was under the impression this was in December, so how tf has Rosemary been on the island for 38 days if she's been there since September??? She would've had to have come in November for that to be true
Flint out here profiling people by name like his name isn't fucking Flint (I also definitely laughed and thought of Batman when I read Bruce's name for the first time)
I can't handle references to the winter king rn don't do this to me-
I stopped to make dinner because I'm hungry, I started at like 5:30 and it's now like 7:35 and I have some yummy pasta and pumpkin tea (I also had like 1.5 margaritas)
I can finally use my insanely eurocentric art history class notes to explain the imagery of what Flint describes in Ezekiel's angels; each of the four creature's heads is representative of the four apostles who wrote the bible, and that coupled with the biblically accurate angels coming down from on high are clear indicators of the second coming in art, meaning the previous priest was preaching the end of days to these people
I've always been such a sucker for Catholicism in gothic media, especially when it comes to imagery, so this all is right up my alley
THE O W L ? ? ?
"...the Almighty had forgotten about the United Kingdom" she's so fucking real for that
Honestly??? The Bishop sounds like he'd be a good love interest for Flint. Maybe it's because I don't like Kerryn that much even tho he's the standard choice, but the whole "hearing them talking to you in times of stress" thing is a fun thing I like with all the pulleyverse couples and it happened with the Bishop so. Hmm.
Fliny's whole color metaphor for logic + Thaniel's synesthesia sounds like another essay for me
The optimism of Flint and the pilgrims is really going to make the horror aspect of this all hit so hard I'm excited
On that note, I love how the stones that looked like beehives so readily became cairns as the tone got darker
My computer started updating as I was making this and I was so scared that I lost everything but thank fuck for tumblr drafts
Anyways those salt rocks are a grade A prime example of Chekov's gun if I've ever seen one
The rocks are fuckin BIRDS???
The fear of machinery is something we have seen in Pulley novels before, especially around this time period, but it's just making me think of the Mars House and how that would tie in
HIMB BABY BIRD I'M ABOUT TO CRY-
N O NOT THE BIRD :(((
That was fast
"The islanders didn't leave a hundred years ago. We're walking in them." this line goes so hard, especially because it includes the audience in the "we"
OOO altitude sickness, very Bedlam Stacks-core
The cloaked devil imagery and unforgotten knowledge description is giving very much Edgar Allen Poe and it's gorgeous
I cannot say I care at all about Kerryn becoming salt but damn was it a creepy twist
And the way she physically started crumbling??? Genuinely horrifying
It took this short story for me to realise that that scene in twofs where Mori is giving his side of the argument with the priest in the future where he actually did go to the wedding, he's arguing about the story of Lot, which likely was derivative of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Wonder why that would come up. Hmm. A mystery.
"He could taste it -- something electric." PLS I'M GOING NUTS-
What in the fucking Cthulu-
Oh Mhairi's back!!! Yay!!!
Alright maybe I spoke too soon with the whole Bishop and Flint thing
Wait it's not Flint??? I thought Bruce was Flint for a second
Oh f u c k dude that was HEAVY
That's so nuts
I literally do not have words what the fuck was that ending
It was really good and clever and fun but w o w
Ending thoughts: I genuinely have none, that was terrifying and beautiful and cool as FUCK, and I think if Ms. Pulley started pumping out only horror novels from now on I would be in full support. It's a really fuckin out of pocket move considering her previous works and even her last short story that had a relatively happy ending but my god it was good. 10/10, very creeped out. Also the sign at the end??? Knowing Flint probably wrote that out and put it around his own neck like a noose??? That's so fucking hardcore I can't believe it. Utterly amazed.

Fun fact!
Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy guns use cathode ray tubes (just like a TV's but smaller) to generate X-Rays!
Using them for 40 hours per week for a year exposes you to a lower equivalent dose than an airplane ride. But you still have to licence them as radiation sources.

X-Ray Inspection for Security Market to Reach $4.8 Billion by 2032 at 6.6% CAGR
MARKET INSIGHTS
The global X-Ray Inspection for Security Market was valued at US$ 2.9 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach US$ 4.8 billion by 2032, at a CAGR of 6.6% during the forecast period 2025-2032
X-Ray inspection systems for security applications are advanced screening devices that utilize X-ray radiation to detect concealed threats in baggage, cargo, and other objects. These systems measure flux, spatial distribution, and spectral properties of X-rays to identify prohibited items such as weapons, explosives, and contraband. The technology encompasses cabinet X-ray detectors, portable systems, and advanced computed tomography (CT) scanners used across airports, borders, and critical infrastructure.
The market growth is primarily driven by increasing global security threats, stringent aviation security regulations, and rising investments in smart infrastructure. While North America currently dominates the market with USD 650 million estimated revenue in 2024, Asia-Pacific is expected to witness the fastest growth due to expanding airport infrastructure in China and India. Key players including Smiths Detection, OSI Systems, and Nuctech account for approximately 45% of the global market share, competing through technological advancements in AI-powered threat detection and dual-view imaging systems.
MARKET DRIVERS
Increasing Airport Security Investments to Propel Market Expansion
The global aviation industry’s relentless focus on security is driving significant investments in advanced X-ray inspection systems. With air passenger traffic projected to exceed 8 billion annually by 2030, airports worldwide are upgrading their security infrastructure. Over 65% of major international airports have initiated modernization programs that include deploying next-generation X-ray screening equipment. These systems incorporate dual-energy detection and automated threat recognition algorithms, dramatically improving detection accuracy while reducing false alarm rates – a critical factor in high-throughput security checkpoints.
Growing Cargo Screening Requirements Fuel Market Demand
International trade expansion and e-commerce growth have created parallel demand for advanced cargo screening solutions. Customs authorities globally now mandate 100% X-ray inspection of high-risk shipments, with several countries implementing these requirements for all inbound cargo. The maritime container screening segment alone accounts for approximately 35% of total X-ray security system deployments. Recent technological advancements in container scanning, such as high-energy systems capable of penetrating dense materials while maintaining image clarity, are accelerating adoption across major ports worldwide.
Counter-Terrorism Initiatives Driving System Upgrades
National security programs across G20 nations have allocated substantial budgets for upgrading critical infrastructure security. Government facilities, transportation hubs, and public venues are increasingly implementing state-of-the-art X-ray screening solutions. The global counter-terrorism expenditure exceeded $150 billion in 2024, with approximately 18% dedicated to inspection technologies. New systems featuring artificial intelligence-powered analysis, cloud-based threat databases, and networked security ecosystems are becoming the standard for high-security installations.
MARKET RESTRAINTS
Radiation Safety Concerns Limit Market Penetration
Despite technological advancements, public apprehension about radiation exposure remains a significant barrier to market expansion. While modern systems operate well below regulatory limits, community resistance has delayed installations in several urban areas. Strict compliance with evolving radiation protection standards adds considerable costs – approximately 20-25% of total system pricing – for additional shielding, monitoring equipment, and operator training. This has particularly affected the mobile X-ray equipment segment, where deployment flexibility must be balanced with comprehensive safety measures.
High Capital Costs Restrict Adoption in Emerging Markets
The substantial upfront investment required for advanced X-ray systems creates adoption challenges in price-sensitive regions. A complete checkpoint solution with automated threat detection can exceed $500,000, placing it beyond reach for many developing nations. Even with leasing models becoming available, total cost of ownership remains high due to maintenance contracts and mandatory recertification requirements. This financial barrier has created a bifurcated market where developed nations rapidly adopt latest technologies while emerging economies continue using outdated equipment.
Technological Complexity Creates Workforce Challenges
Modern X-ray inspection systems require highly trained operators and analysts, creating staffing challenges for security organizations. The specialist nature of image interpretation and threat recognition has led to certification requirements that can take 6-12 months to complete. Many facilities report 15-20% vacancy rates for qualified positions, forcing them to operate below optimal capacity. This skills gap is compounded by the retirement of experienced personnel and competition from other technology sectors for analytical talent.
MARKET OPPORTUNITIES
AI Integration Creates New Market Potential
Artificial intelligence represents perhaps the most significant growth opportunity for security X-ray systems. Deep learning algorithms can now identify threats with 98% accuracy in controlled tests – surpassing human performance. These systems reduce staffing requirements while improving throughput, creating strong value propositions for high-volume operations. The AI-enhanced segment is projected to grow nearly 40% faster than conventional systems, particularly in applications requiring continuous operation such as parcel distribution centers.
Smart City Initiatives Drive Infrastructure Investments
Urban security integration creates substantial opportunities for networked X-ray solutions. Many smart city projects include centralized security coordination centers that incorporate data from multiple screening points. These systems allow for dynamic threat assessment and resource allocation across transportation systems and critical infrastructure. The global smart city technology market includes over $25 billion allocated for public safety solutions, with integrated screening systems representing a key component.
Emerging Economies Present Untapped Potential
While currently constrained by budget limitations, developing markets represent long-term growth opportunities as infrastructure modernization gains momentum. Several multilateral organizations now offer financing mechanisms specifically for security system upgrades. Regional manufacturing hubs also create potential for local production partnerships, potentially reducing costs through regional supply chains. The Asia Pacific market is projected to account for over 45% of new installations by 2030 as economic growth enables security spending.
