Hi! I wanted to ask a question and I wasn’t sure if it was too personal or not so just ignore this is you’d rather not answer, but I was wondering if you went to art school or got a degree in it? I really want to start learning and maybe one day start a career in animation and wasn’t sure whether I should spend time and resources getting a degree. I know it’s going to be different for everybody and nothings a guarantee for this field but since I love your style and technical skill I was curious whether you had done that and what were your thoughts on it or if you are self-taught.

Ig I should quickly go through my art journey so you can have an overall look of why I went to art school lol.
So I'm from Vietnam. I think back in 2013 I went to a small art school in Singapore (they were the only one that gave me a scholarship). My major was 3D modeling actually, but during my final year, I realized I only wanted to draw characters for animation. I could already draw decently, so I just read The Silver Way book and built a character design portfolio on my own during this time. I was lucky I got a job as a concept artist at a small animation studio there so I learned a lot from the job. I also did a lot of self-learning and took Woulter Tulp's Expressive Character class on Schoolism.
Then after 3-ish years of working, I got sick of the tiny and dying animation industry in Singapore. I wanna do sth more than just preschool shows and I was severely underpaid lmao. So I quit my job and took the MA VisDev program at AAU. It's a little more affordable cuz u can do 1 year online and the second year on-site. The reason I went to this school even tho i could just take a VisDev class online was cuz i need the visa so i can try to break into the industry in the US.
Now back to your question. Is art school a must? No. Should you still take it? Maybe, depends on your situation. If you can afford it then hell yeah by all means. Art school is great cuz you have professors and peers to help guide you along the way so you won't get lost while trying to figure out your shit. And to have a few years just experimenting and focusing on art is a great experience. Plus you can make a lot of meaningful connections in school and it will help you a long way after you grad. But if you have to go into debt to go to art school, then don't. There are places like Schoolism, CGMA, and Warrior Art Camp where you can pick what class and from whom you wanna learn. If you are not from the US and wanna break into the industry here like me however, then yeah getting a degree is a better bet cuz you can use the student visa and OPT to hopefully get a job here (it's still very very hard tho ngl im struggling rn as we speak lmao). Also, you need a BA to work overseas so there's that too. The hard truth is studios prefer to hire locally than some rando from somewhere else and have to wait for them to relocate and shit, (unless you are exceptionally good and they'd do anything to have you, but that is super rare lol).
Even though I did go to art school, I have to say most of my skills are from self-study. It requires a lot of self-discipline but I'm pretty much obsessed with drawing and I draw everyday so it's not a problem for me. But my friend is not good at that, so she found art school/classes helped her better cuz there are deadlines and instructors to help guide her to reach her goal. So it depends on your learning style tbh.
There is this chart that can help you consider your options. Im sorry it's a very long answer, cuz yes everyone's experience is different. Feel free to drop me another ask if you still have anymore questions tho ^^
Edit: I must also add, though there are online classes and ways to self-learn animation,I do think it only truly benefit you if you know exactly what you wanna do in this industry (for example I already knew i wanna become a character designer for 2d/3D animation specifically so any books/classes i took I tailored it to fit my goal). If you are unsure what you wanna do, then maybe even a cheap animation course will do better, and then you can take extra online classes on the side.

Settings challenge, 2nd month: The Moon (1).
The Moon is the capital of Earth.
A city on the surface of our main satellite is the political and economic capital of Federated Earth, since it's easier to access than our home world and its pesky gravity.
Baselu is humanity's most populated city. A closed (but ever-growing) structure with a terraformed environment and artificial gravity.
Home to a an unending variety of people and services, the Baselu Metropolitan Area is the perfect place to do or find anything.

This preschool teacher is showing his very diverse class of kids (including aliens) earthian animals they might not be familiar with.
A businesswoman is on an important call while receiving the coffee she ordered, instead of going down to the café. Her robotic eye is a non-necessary modification, which are frequent on The Moon.
One of the most common sights in Baselu, an endless stream of unique looking people crossing the street.
A bodybuilder going to the gym. His arms are modded with energy veins. Might want to work a bit on your legs too, bud.
An alien expat. She works online but loves living in Baselu, so exotic!
This earthian feels very lost in the skyless labyrinth that is the capital. He's looking for the hospital, where he'll get tests that aren't available on Earth.
It's almost weird to see people with all their natural hair, or skin. This tattooed runner is a more common sight.
A goth weirdo walking their dog back home from one of the city's parks.
Our android friend is making sure he's not late for work.
Baselu is my criticism of artificial capitals (screw Madrid), while also being an ode to the opportunities, diversity and variety of cities.
The city's name comes from "base lunar", abbreviated through time to Baselu. The joke is there's an irrelevant Catalan city called Besalú, and it is hilarious to me for the capital of humanity to be named similarly.

My mother's family basically lived in poverty when she was growing up but almost all her siblings speak English pretty well (except my late uncle I think) because my mother became educated and influenced them. My dad's family is more in the military and they have thick accents and even my dad who studied in the UK in the 80s doesn't really speak RP English. I learned English really early in my life because my parents put me in English reading classes in preschool. If English isn't your first language also, I'm very curious to learn how you became somewhat fluent enough to use it online ...?

Their parents weren't well off when he and Itachi were very young; their father, a young but ambitious engineer from a working-class family who lived in public housing, and their mother, a college dropout turned insurance agent who didn’t make big sales but had a knack for getting downtown and central business district professionals to confide even their best-kept secrets to her.
They sent the brothers to public school. Itachi was well-adjusted and didn’t have problems; inevitably, they thought it would go well for Sasuke, too. But when Sasuke entered preschool, his experience was altogether different. There he had a foretaste of the human suffering that dominated his early years for he was a remarkably beautiful but shy boy whose delicate porcelain cheeks flushed crimson like blooming camellias at the squeals of girls in class. Teachers and strangers at the school playground smothered him with unwanted affection, and they thought it cute when he cried and protested no. This went on in grade school and even in middle school. Older girls from other schools who took an interest in him got a hold of his mobile number and sent him lewd texts. When puberty defined his features even more and he grew taller, his legs longer, the harassment worsened. Entertainment agents, pimps, and extreme fangirls—a whole lot of people he didn’t want to associate with—walked up to him on the daily. People took pictures of him without his permission and posted them online, stalked him and found out where he lived, and even stole his unwashed clothing.
Photography was a hobby his father dabbled with from time to time. For Sasuke, it was his only solace: capturing scenes in the world that offered respite from the bulk that only confused and constantly imposed on him with its shallowness.
The worst of what he had to endure eventually stopped when his parents transferred him to Sairiumu in the last year of middle school because of the higher standards of living that their family business afforded them from contracts dealt with Haruno Group. Still, he wasn't completely free from unwanted attention when he entered Sairiumu.
So, it came as a rescue when Sakura Haruno of the Kyudo Club confessed to him the spring break before they turned high schoolers. Not only did she keep unwanted attention away, but something about Sakura made her irresistible. How she wielded a bow and arrow—the daughter of her brother's boss—would send a tingling, uneasy sensation in his chest. He loved the danger she posed to his mortality. He fantasized about getting hit by one of her arrows in the middle of the day at the Archery Club's dojo, while he watched on the sidelines with his eye in the viewfinder of the Leica R9 mounted with a DMR that the photography club owned, and it always felt too real. The fear was raw, bordering on arousal, and he couldn't get her out of his mind. There was no other way to explain what he felt: it was a fierce sort of attraction.
Lately, more often than not, that attraction bobs unsteadily, like how a bowstring that once so tightly wound, taut and firm with tension, slowly loosens its grip due to sources unfounded: could be the humidity in the air that causes ennui; it could also be the lack of genuine concern that Sasuke found himself reciprocated with.
They stopped for ice lollies on the way home and while on the apartment lift, Sakura stared long and hard at him.
"What is it?" he asked. He hated it when she kept him guessing what he'd done wrong. Already, he was scanning through his mind everything they'd done together throughout the day, the things he’d said and how he spoke to her. “If it’s about the picture: it wasn’t ugly. Sakura took another bit off her green ice lollies. "You were being followed, that's what.”
His heart skipped a beat. He was never used to telling anyone about his stalker problems. Only Sakura bothered enough to care—but he wouldn’t exactly use the word care.
“Was it so hard to tell me? All the way to the train! The cow was standing right behind you, did you see?"
Sakura still spoke calmly, but if the edge to her tone was any indication, she wouldn’t let this easily die out.
"Had she followed us out I would've peeled off her face then and there.” She threw the rest of her lolly on the floor. "She was wearing our uniform, was she not? You got her pale face in that pic. I'll have someone look her up."
The elevator doors opened and as Sakura strode out, there was a vicious glint in her eyes.
"Wait." Sasuke hurried after her. "I know her. She's the new transfer student in my class."
Sakura slowly turned. "Oh. Is that so? Interesting." Her eyes were wide and devoid of emotion. "You and that girl got something going on?"
"No—"
"Is that why she's trying to tell me by creeping in my pic and coming up to you like that?!"
"Just listen! Every single time"—Sasuke groaned—"I just know because she's in my class, that's all. She must've been trying to explore places and saw us!"
"Okay." Sakura shrugged, flipping her hair. "It only sounded like you were backing up for her, whatever—"
"I'm not!" Sasuke interrupted.
"Don't get too worked up," dismissed Sakura. "I just don't like people thinking they could fantasize having what's mine."
Anyone who's ever been caught by Sakura stalking him had their companies driven to bankruptcy not long after. It's all too easy for the Haruno Group to change people's lives with a few calls. While that proved effective against his stalker problems, he couldn't help but wonder if someday, it would be his turn, too.
Because, would anyone abandon something that's theirs on the side of the road?
She didn’t call for weeks after breaking up with him. He took that as a sign that she didn't want to talk with him anymore. After his installment to the presidency of the photography club, she introduced him to her father and asked permission to live together as if nothing ever happened. However, she had already quit the kyudo club and kyudo altogether and ran for vice president of the student council. Kyudo was something she had devoted herself to since she was a kid. Yet, it was thrown out of her life and forgotten so easily like that.
The next day, she surprised him by visiting his classroom during lunch break when everyone had already returned and was preparing for when the school alarm would go off.
He went up to her while she scanned around for a face. "Sakura."
She wasn't there for him, he could see that much. When she found who she was looking for, she smiled, all too pleased to find that person looking back at her, and whispered sensually in Sasuke's ear:
"Just thought I'd..."
She wrapped her arms around Sasuke’s neck, stood on her tiptoes, and dove into his mouth for a long, deep kiss.
His classmates teased and hooted. Sasuke preferred intimacy in secret but at that moment had also fully immersed himself in the kiss. He understood it was a performance for Hinata Hyuuga. Whether it aligned with his aesthetics or not, such is lost in the hands of the theatre director.
When their mouths parted, Sakura gently patted his face.
"See ya later," she said sweetly.

are your daughter/partner learning german?? if they are has it been difficult?? i respect you a lot for moving across continents like you have :] the change seems to really have been worth it
They both are! For my daughter it’s easy bc she goes to Kindergarten (which is like US preschool) so she’s immersed in the language (and more specifically the local dialect) for several hours a day. And my partner takes some online classes because he has to pass a test showing his level of German each time he applies for a new residency card. It’s extremely stressful because of the pressure, but he’s been doing great so far. I also think learning another language is a bit easier for him since he already speaks 2 fluently. It’s definitely such a huge adjustment overall but like you said, very much worth it 🙏❤️ I look forward to a few years from now once we’re all fully adjusted 😊

For Teacher Appreciation Week, we will spotlight one of our temaxtianihme (teachers) at Speaknahuatl in the next few days. Today we spotlight Temaxtiani Cui!
Q. Tell us about yourself (I.e. hobbies, name, family, pastimes).
A. My legal name is Cuitlahuac. It's been a journey having this name because until this day people have a hard time pronouncing it. I have two younger siblings, my mom is a nurse and most of my uncles, aunts and cousins are teachers. I have a loving partner and we've been together since 2021. We both enjoy supporting small businesses, especially those that create delicious coffee and craft beer but also hoodies, hats, accessories and T-shirts. We also enjoy buying and listening to records and going out to live shows.
Q. What is your teaching background and where were you raised?
A. I've been teaching online and in-person since 2017: first with the Tlahtoltapazolli collective and then with the Speaknahuatl collective at various campuses, autonomous spaces, and museums across the "USA" and "Mexico." I've taught different age groups from preschoolers to high schoolers to elders. I'm also an English-Spanish-Nahuatl translator as well as a linguistic and cultural consultant. I was born and raised in Baja and Southern California but now live in the Willamette Valley, Oregon.
Q. How long have you been teaching at Speaknahuatl?
A. I’ve been teaching since 2018. I started out doing one-on-one courses, then group classes and now one semester a year an asynchronous course.
Q. What Nahuatl dialectal variants and/or subject(s) do you teach at Speaknahuatl?
A. In past years I focused on Chicontepec, Veracruz and Tamazunchale, San Luis Potosí Nahuatl from the Huasteca because my teachers are L1 native speakers from these areas or L2 near-native speakers that learned from them. Then it changed to a Multidialectal approach with elements of Native American and Mesoamerican Studies. It's still the same now but now the focus is in the teaching and revitalization of Southern Jalisco Nahuatl (Mexicano) because it's a variant that is closely related to what my ancestors spoke.
Q. What is the most rewarding part of teaching at Speaknahuatl?
A. Those moments when students realize that they've been using words that have a Nahuatl origin. Back in my younger years, I was never informed of this so I love the fact that I can be that teacher for my students. This is why I enjoy empowering my students to connect with their linguistic and cultural heritages.
Q. What are some challenges that you or your students have faced since teaching here?
A. During the pandemic, one of my challenges was incorporating language teaching methods into an online setting. Another challenge was the amount of students; at times there were 50 students on a Zoom meeting! A challenge that some students have is "reconnecting" with their linguistic and cultural heritages: some feel that because they weren't raised speaking their language or living in their family's culture that they aren't part of that culture. That's why my main focus is to empower them to reconnect to their roots despite not being born or raised in their familial roots' pueblos.
Q. What is one piece of advice you give to students who are struggling to connect to their roots?
A. You are from a certain place(s)—deeply, ancestrally. It's your birthplace, where you were raised, where you call home. It's the birthplace of your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents—the land your ancestors called home. If you can trace back your roots to so-called Mexico or Mesoamerica (parts of Mexico and Central America) remember: long before the Spanish invasion, identity was—and still is—rooted in the altepeł (pueblo), in the land, in the language, in the culture. Reclaim your story. Seek your true roots. Don't allow others to define who you are. Return to your cultural and linguistic inheritance(s). It's yours. They are yours. I know sometimes there are many factors that may make it difficult to learn about your ancestry through familial oral stories and histories but trust me, it will make it that much worth it. Q. How would you say students can succeed in your classroom?
A. Show up, get your notebook and pencil or pen, bring some water, nourish yourself before class, study, connect with your classmates to build community and study together. Remember that learning a language is a lifelong journey so be patient with yourself; making mistakes is the best way to know that you are learning. Also remember that learning a language helps your brain function: memory and a longer attention span, enriches your vocabulary, among other benefits.

Speaking of Alexa I heard from a mom who was there that Alexa shut down the studio because she just did not want to run it anymore. Danceplex was going to be on the new dance moms and then they didn’t get chosen. That’s the whole reason she fired Kayla… So Alexa could be the only one on dance moms and look like she does it all even though Kayla ran everything for 3 years… It was a shock to all of the kids. She totally ghosted every mom and dancer who reached out to her asking what happened.
Then she starting texted the kids asking them to promote MAAM. Super sneaky to do that without telling the moms. Also not a good look for a Streetz faculty to text minors anyways.
Do you know if the studio is still open? I was not sure if the team closing means dance plex studio is closing too..or is that where they are running MAAm?
All I have to say is:

But genuinely that is so fucked up. I know everyone was wondering what had gone on since they had team pics and then randomly closed. This makes sense though because they must have heard they didn't get Dance Moms or whatever and then she decided she didn't care enough to run the team. So devastated because Kayla made that such a good, positive environment for so many kids and then Alexa tries to take the credit?
About MAAM...like I said, flop after flop. It seems like an online thing since the kids doing it are from all over? Very shifty that she approached kids directly when a lot of the kids are juniors to young teens, def not appropriate. Not sure how much they are charging those kids for that nonsense but hopefully it's no more than $25 a month. They have brilliant dancers doing it when the choreo is looking like a preschooler came up with it for a talent show.
I don't know if the studio is open still, if anyone lives nearby they should go see if you can still drop in/book the space! Idk that without the comp team and frequent drop in classes they could afford to keep it going tbh.
