ok im waffling on about fallout instead of having breakfast but i saw a criticism of how the prisoners were treated that's stuck with me.
spoilers!
so i think the criticism wasn't incorrect, per se: it condemned the way the show portrayed the vault dweller's naive intention to rehabilitate their murderous captives. it found fault with a common, and horrible, message that tv shows like to say, which is that carcerial violence and even the death penalty is the only effective way to deal with criminals, who are a fundamentally Bad category of human. im sick of that message too! but i think that wasn't what was going on here, actually.
so like, the vault dwellers had only ever experienced violent loss the once, and didn't really know how to cope other than denial and repression of the ordeal. but they were all hopeful and enthusiastic that their prisoners, the invaders that came to kill them all and take their stuff, could be eventually welcomed into the community as their comrades. the champions of this cause were nebbishy dorks and painfully out of touch academics. this is pretty normal for how prison reformers are portrayed, if extremely fucking annoying for those of us who ARE in favor of prison reform.
but so of course when the son of the former overseer, Norm, speaks up and suggests killing the prisoners, because why should they share resources with invaders who explicitly wanted to keep hurting them? why should they show mercy to their attackers? everyone is appalled by this suggestion. because they had to reinvent the whole concept of vengeance right then and there, because grudges and cycles of violence are anathema to a bottle society like theirs. they have been raised all their lives to forgive and forget and now, put to the test, they're recommitting to this ethos: get along, let the past go, look towards the future, believe the best of everyone.
but the prisoners die, anyway. the prisoners are killed with rat poison. and the thing is that Norm who suggested it didn't do it himself. and the prison guard who's blamed for it, even though she privately agreed with Norm that the prisoners are dangerous and unforgiveable, she didn't do it either. it's not a moment of triumphant, cathartic vengeance and it doesn't prove that there's no way to negotiate with terrorists and invaders but kill them like vermin because that's not what the message is meant to be.
the message is that norm stands there in the middle of these inconvenient prisoners, these corpses dressed in his own people's uniforms, and he looks at the new overseer. and he knows that she killed them, and she knows that he knows. she wanted him to know. this is her message and he's reading her loud and clear. and he doesn't look like a guy who's just been backed up by authority, who's just been validated in his desire for the ultimate control over those who have wronged him.
he's scared and pale and the music is ominous as fuck. and he's inside the cell, he's directly in the middle of it.
because what just happened is that he realized his entire society is being held prisoner, and the overseer is the one with the rat poison. and that he doesn't know, anymore, what freedom and safety and justice actually mean, just that he doesn't have them and he doesn't know where to find them.
that's what that scene meant. not that rehabilitative justice is a pathetic delusion of people who have no idea how to make hard choices.
but that before you advocate for killing prisoners, you might want to see how big that prison is, first.
and which side of the bars you're standing on.

smart, genius yanderes making their obsession feel stupid and dumb so they rely on them for everything???? bimbo reader is one of my fav tropes becuz... i am stupid :)
tw // yandere content, emotional abuse, just being mean, yandere stuff u guys know the deal
constantly belittling you, demeaning you, as a way of lowering your self-esteem. making you second-guess everything you do as a way of making you depend on them for the simplest of tasks. snapping at you and immediately turning around and comforting you.
"don't be stupid. you should know better than that." he snaps, snatching the pen from your hands.
"what? what did i-" you feel your face heat from embarassment.
"(y/n), this is a job application." he snatches that paper from your hands.
"i know what it is..." you try to reach for it, but he holds it away. "i just want to help you."
"help me? i don't need your help, (y/n)." he grabs at your hair, pulling you off your chair to the ground. you yelp in pain as his fingers tangle in your hair and yank at your scalp. "why would they hire you? what qualities do you have that they would want? you're an idiot, a fucking idiot. you can barely cook a decent meal without my help." his voice was laced with venom. you feel tears slip down your face.
"i'm sorry." you meekly whisper. "you're right, i'm too stupid." you choke out a sob. he smiles before shushing you, letting go of your hair. he sits down next to you and pulls you into a hug. you melt into his touch.
"it's okay, that's why i'm here. to take care of you."
definitely: spencer reid (post-prison), bruce wayne, tony stark, 707, elias bouchard, gojo satoru
maybe: dick grayson, sam winchester, charles xavier, jason todd

In my rewrite of the Mandalorian season 2 finale Din doesn’t send Moff Gideon the threatening anticipatory holocall before he gets there
Gideon receives the call and hears Din’s message, and seconds after that all of the power to the bridge goes out, because Din and his crew are already inside the ship, hunting them in the dark

I’m back on my lab rats bullshit for a little bit.
What if Leo and Tasha reacted like any normal person would to the guy in their life keeps children in their basement who are kind of fine with it because they’ve never known anything else and decided to nope the fuck out of there and take them with them.
I don’t recall if they say what Tasha did for work but let’s make her a lawyer/prosecutor.
Leo find the rats and is so stunned, not processing and takes photos and videos to check later to be sure he didn’t hallucinate this. Donnie’s an idiot who doesn’t have cameras down there because he was stupid enough to believe his wife and step-son wouldn’t find the secret basement. Leo shows his mom and takes her down there and right then and there she decides to fuck out of there and takes the three with them.
The rats think this is some kind of mission training and don’t realize what it really is and is happy to help give her and investigators information they need and help them hack in to Donnie’s history and finances.
Tasha absolutely destroys him in court and gets full custody of them. It’s also revealed in court that he doesn’t have birth certificates for any of them or any identification because he kidnapped them from his brother ( who does in fact have the birth certificates and is happy to prove it because he thinks this is absolutely hilarious. Also because his original involvement with the bionics and unethical experimentation is not known so everyone thinks it’s just Donnie) it’s also revealed there’s a fourth sibling that wasn’t kidnapped because Donnie didn’t know about him that Douglas had a closed adoption for because he was worried for his safety. (he also doesn’t want custody of his kids again because this was all public and he can’t risk being found out and going to court.)
Douglas is totally fine being the weird uncle they see who comes by to help with their chips. Tasha allows it because he’s the only other person who can figure out how they work but keeps him under so many legal documents and contracts with no loop holes so he can’t try shit anyway.
And the kids get to be normal kids who happen to be bionic and get exposure therapy for normalcy from Tasha and Leo and therapy therapy and they get to be kids? And don’t have to do missions unless they want to? And when they do it’s because it’s like a world ending event but most of the time they’re just some kids.

In the middle of drawing this I realized something. The other day I was drawing SMC fanart. After I was done I went to look at other fanarts, thinking, "huh that's weird, why is his light eye on the wrong side lol" but no. I just used a flipped image as a reference, I was the one who had it on the wrong side💔 which inspired this extra doodle
