Sherlock, by nature, requires far more human contact than Mycroft does. But Sherlock has idolized his brother to such a degree that he didn't simply try to keep up with him on an intellectual level; he also tried to emulate the personal distance that Mycroft has from others.
And Mycroft encouraged that. He genuinely thought that it would protect his little brother from being hurt.
In ASIB, when he apologizes to Sherlock for driving him into Irene's path, I think what he means is that he should have known. He is sharply reminded that his brother is vulnerable to getting involved with people.
And then Irene informs them of how Moriarty calls them "the Ice Man and the Virgin", which suggests that unlike Mycroft, who truly manages to distance himself from humanity, Sherlock is simply inexperienced. And Sherlock actually looks mortified when she says that; he is usually quite indifferent to people's comments about his sexuality, but here Irene is essentially saying that Sherlock wants people right in front of Mycroft. And even though he would never admit it, Sherlock very obviously cares about his brother's opinion of him. And that's when Sherlock makes his grand "sentiment?" "love is a chemical defect found on the losing side" speech; the speech is of course meant to tear down Irene, but it's also meant for the ears of Mycroft. And Mycroft is alarmed (the shooting script mentions that he is concerned about the way Sherlock got the victory). Did schooling Sherlock about the disadvantage of caring truly do him good?
Well, in any case, despite Sherlock loudly announcing that he now got the final proof that love is a disadvantage, Mycroft knows better than to think that Irene just stopped mattering to him. That's not how his brother's heart works. As shown when he meets John in the cafe, he sees that Sherlock has chosen a profession that would get him involved with people far more personally than his own occupation does, and that says everything (although Sherlock is not conscious of this).

So this is admittedly coming from me using my engineering paper to do art studies (which actually has been very helpful for proportion consistency and understanding why something looks off to me)
But I agree that Gideon is actually a fairly decent artist who has whatever the equivalent of an engineering notebook in Avantris is, full of drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
While most of these are of equipment, rides, and gadgets he's either seen or been wanting to make if he ever had the resources for them there are some of people and creatures that catch his eye.
Now, these drawings tend to be very technical just basically replicating exactly what he sees down to fine details. They're not gonna be hung up in museums or aiming to express some deep, symbolic meaning.
They're are as direct and to the point as the man holding the pen drafting them. More akin to biological illustrations or engineering drawings. Little distinction between drawing a person to drawing a machine.
It can come off quite cold, actually. Maybe even unnerving to see yourself dissected and pulled apart into components.
It's why Gideon doesn't consider himself much of an artist. To him, this isn't art. If anything, it's closer to copying or tracing in his mind.
Initially, when Kremy finally got to see these drawings, he was a little disappointed with how stiff and clinical they all looked. He particularly didn't know how to feel about all the ones of him from angles he personally found unflattering or the ones that were side by side comparisons to wild alligators.
And maybe perhaps previous romantic notions of a hidden page of him rendered with soft strokes and reverent shades of charcoal were quickly erased, but at least Gid got his snout shape correct.
It does ease his mind at least that the rest of the crew gets the same treatment. Sure, there are still more pages of him than anyone else, but Kremy boils it down as a product of near constant proximity than one of muse. Otherwise, his interest in the notebook fades. The illustrations are still impressive within their own right, and he makes sure to tell Gid that whenever he finds him angrily ripping out a page that he's spent almost an hour over correcting dimensions on.
It really isn't until he finds a page on Torbek that wasn't there before that Kremy starts to pay it any mind. There's nothing particularly special about Torbek's page. It's the same clinical breakdown of his physiology and of his attire.
But it's there now when it wasn't there before in all the time they've known Torbek prior to the Faewild. Then, another page appears with Twig and all her little details pinned to the paper.
That's when it finally occurs to Kremy. Gideon, a man who prides himself in living to the fullest. Never slowing down as he races from one moment to the next. Is taking the time to notice and jot them down to memory.
These are not quick, sweeping scratches of lead. But meticulously measured lines calculated to take on the form of their visage. Every flaw, every nick, every piece that comes together to make them a whole, living mechanism perfectly replicated and accounted for.
There are no vibrant hues or eye-catching gestures that make one feel like they were sculpted from silk, but there is beauty in the exact distance between your eyes.
And if Kremy instinctively begins to still at the sight of a ruler taking his measurements from a distance, to afford time to a man who's only ever had it taken from him well that's between him and the good Baron.

Anya got rejected to medical school eight times, but tbh that's not as bad as it sounds. Originally, I thought it meant that she got rejected for eight application cycles/years straight, but she probably just applied to eight schools and got rejected from all of them. She's mentioned to have no savings back at home and applications are expensive asf, so I think it's realistic if she applied for only 2-3 cycles/years to only 2-3 schools and got rejected eight times from that. Imo it's less realistic that she only applied to one school for eight years and kept getting rejected (despite this, I still think she's in her late twenties/early thirties tho)
But tbh it's not even unrealistic to think that she applied to eight schools in 1 cycle/year. Was talking to my TA who's applying to medical school, and she applied to seven. Medical schools are ridiculously competitive hard to get into, so tbh it's not even that bad that she got rejected eight times, nor is it any indication of her being "incompetent" or "stupid" (,:
FUCK Jimmy's and his stupid comment "Because she's... you know." Getting rejected from medical school isn't uncommon and she's evidently a great medic bc she kept Curly alive in his state (I'm ignoring plot armor and giving all the props to her)

Poverty, poverty knock / Keeping one eye on the clock / I know I can guttle, when I hear my shuttle / Go poverty, poverty knock...
...so I read @nothwell's novel 'mr warren's profession' at approximately light speed the other day and felt like drawing some of the cast.

ok my OTHER reflection:
on the one hand its really frustrating to see the posts about docs and healthcare in general on here be so narrow-minded. bad experiences with certain providers have lead to a huge spread of misinformation and mistrust with the whole system. which can and HAS lead to people avoiding 'evil' doctors for perfectly treatable illnesses and dying from them (the vaccine bullshit, anyone?)
but on the other hand. it is TERRIFYING how some of these docs practice medicine. at times i think 'are you just burned out and don't give a shit or are you straight up just stupid?' and i work in critical care. where quite literally every case is life or death. even in the academic sector where there is supposedly a standard of excellence, some doctors i would not let touch my loved ones with a ten foot pole.
and that sucks. i know this is the no nuance piss on the poor webbed site but 'the medical system and people that work for it are fallible and aspects of it are morally questionable at best/unethical at worst' AND 'the field of medicine exists to help people first and foremost and mistrusting/avoiding it can be detrimental in the long run' can and DO co-exist
#also. folks i hate to tell you but 'doctors get big pharma kickbacks and they can cure you but just choose not to to get more money'#is a very tempting conspiracy theory. but it is SO UNTRUE.#hey listen. if someone is telling you they can 'cure' your disease magically if you just take x vitamin THEY ARE LYING#even miraculous cures like bone marrow transplants for autoimmune disease and CAR-T therapy#have such severe side-effects that they quite literally kill you#i can't tell you how many times i've taken care of people who#had their cancer 'cured' but the treatment ruined their kidneys/heart/lungs#or fucked their immune system so bad that a common bacteria could completely take them out#anyone selling you miracles is L Y I N G#i understand that a lot of this anger is around disability and chronic illness and psych and i get that. intimately.#its 100% accurate to say that a patient who researched independently about ehlers-danlos or POTS knows more about it than i do.#and its hard to see the profession as 'people who sincerely ARE trying to help' when you actively work with people who fucking suck#and you think like 'you went to school. you went through all this training. you (presumably) passed boards'#we should have at least around the same level of knowledge#but that is often not the case#still#making large scale statements about an entire profession (especially when its supposed to be a civic service) is just... not good#my two cents rec for this is:#if you think you have something rare or unusual try to find a doc that specialized in this i.e. go to an academic center.#trainees are less set in their ways and can think outside the box PLUS if there are new/innovative treatments they would have them#if you need pretty much ANY surgery. private is the way to go#you want surgeons with high volume and experience#surgical techniques do not change on the dime. most havent changed in 50+ years. a lot of other medicine DOES#(this of course does not apply to specialized surgeries like whipple or PTE or schwannoma resection - go to academics for that)#if its REALLY rare whether medical or surgical your GP will not know what to do with you#academic centers are referral centers. they are more likely to have the right tools to diagnose/treat#where was i going with this?#oh yeah i had an odd interaction with an ED doc admitting to me last night that was NOT practicing within current standard of care#and was just so casual and assured i started to doubt MYself. like. am I the crazy one?!?!#like i'm young i dont know everything SURE

"Debilitating period pain that makes you pass out is normal. Suck it up."
"Third time in the ER in a week? Well, here's some more ibuprofen, go home."
"No, your vision hasn't changed. [I can't believe you wasted my time like this (was the doctor's tone of voice).]"
"You have [condition] because you're fat. Lose some weight."
"Your teeth have bad stains, you must be chewing tobacco and lying about it."
“Nothing is wrong with your ears, just stop sticking stuff in them.”
"You must be lying about being a virgin because of this weird lesion on your [censored]."
“You’re too young to have these problems [so just gonna lose limbs I guess].”
"You're not actually in any pain at all, you're delusional. This is certain because you have a mental illness. Oh yeah, nice to meet you."

on one hand i feel strongly that we need to steal shakespeare back from posh people who have ruined it with their received pronunciation abominations, on the other hand they have ruined it so utterly that i don't want to.

not to rant on main but like does anyone else know people who go on and on about their own complexity and intelligence (particularly at the expense of others) but actually just fail to be interesting at all. im talking the girl who calls herself a neurodivergent baddie who only likes weird people but then gets shady when youre weird in the wrong way. or who says they hate small talk and wanna talk about theology and literature and philosophy but get weirded out when people actually start having discussions. like the person who talks themself up as kind and introspective but just ends up being a bully. this very very specific type of person and ive met multiple people like this and i cant help but get tired of it. the whole higher plane superiority act.

fyi therapist and counsellor aren’t protected terms so no actual qualifications are required to become one.. please check who it is that you’re actually seeing and that they’re qualified to be looking after you because your therapist could be literally anybody if you’ve gone private
