Sherlock, by nature, requires far more human contact than Mycroft does. But Sherlock has idolized his brother to such a degree that he didn't simply try to keep up with him on an intellectual level; he also tried to emulate the personal distance that Mycroft has from others.
And Mycroft encouraged that. He genuinely thought that it would protect his little brother from being hurt.
In ASIB, when he apologizes to Sherlock for driving him into Irene's path, I think what he means is that he should have known. He is sharply reminded that his brother is vulnerable to getting involved with people.
And then Irene informs them of how Moriarty calls them "the Ice Man and the Virgin", which suggests that unlike Mycroft, who truly manages to distance himself from humanity, Sherlock is simply inexperienced. And Sherlock actually looks mortified when she says that; he is usually quite indifferent to people's comments about his sexuality, but here Irene is essentially saying that Sherlock wants people right in front of Mycroft. And even though he would never admit it, Sherlock very obviously cares about his brother's opinion of him. And that's when Sherlock makes his grand "sentiment?" "love is a chemical defect found on the losing side" speech; the speech is of course meant to tear down Irene, but it's also meant for the ears of Mycroft. And Mycroft is alarmed (the shooting script mentions that he is concerned about the way Sherlock got the victory). Did schooling Sherlock about the disadvantage of caring truly do him good?
Well, in any case, despite Sherlock loudly announcing that he now got the final proof that love is a disadvantage, Mycroft knows better than to think that Irene just stopped mattering to him. That's not how his brother's heart works. As shown when he meets John in the cafe, he sees that Sherlock has chosen a profession that would get him involved with people far more personally than his own occupation does, and that says everything (although Sherlock is not conscious of this).
#bbc sherlock#sherlock holmes#mycroft holmes#bbcsherlock#although moriarty absolutely overestimated mycroft's distance from humanity#he lost to sherlock because he failed to see that sherlock would have mycroft#and of course mycroft would never have chosen his particular profession either if he didn't care about people

So this is admittedly coming from me using my engineering paper to do art studies (which actually has been very helpful for proportion consistency and understanding why something looks off to me)
But I agree that Gideon is actually a fairly decent artist who has whatever the equivalent of an engineering notebook in Avantris is, full of drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
While most of these are of equipment, rides, and gadgets he's either seen or been wanting to make if he ever had the resources for them there are some of people and creatures that catch his eye.
Now, these drawings tend to be very technical just basically replicating exactly what he sees down to fine details. They're not gonna be hung up in museums or aiming to express some deep, symbolic meaning.
They're are as direct and to the point as the man holding the pen drafting them. More akin to biological illustrations or engineering drawings. Little distinction between drawing a person to drawing a machine.
It can come off quite cold, actually. Maybe even unnerving to see yourself dissected and pulled apart into components.
It's why Gideon doesn't consider himself much of an artist. To him, this isn't art. If anything, it's closer to copying or tracing in his mind.
Initially, when Kremy finally got to see these drawings, he was a little disappointed with how stiff and clinical they all looked. He particularly didn't know how to feel about all the ones of him from angles he personally found unflattering or the ones that were side by side comparisons to wild alligators.
And maybe perhaps previous romantic notions of a hidden page of him rendered with soft strokes and reverent shades of charcoal were quickly erased, but at least Gid got his snout shape correct.
It does ease his mind at least that the rest of the crew gets the same treatment. Sure, there are still more pages of him than anyone else, but Kremy boils it down as a product of near constant proximity than one of muse. Otherwise, his interest in the notebook fades. The illustrations are still impressive within their own right, and he makes sure to tell Gid that whenever he finds him angrily ripping out a page that he's spent almost an hour over correcting dimensions on.
It really isn't until he finds a page on Torbek that wasn't there before that Kremy starts to pay it any mind. There's nothing particularly special about Torbek's page. It's the same clinical breakdown of his physiology and of his attire.
But it's there now when it wasn't there before in all the time they've known Torbek prior to the Faewild. Then, another page appears with Twig and all her little details pinned to the paper.
That's when it finally occurs to Kremy. Gideon, a man who prides himself in living to the fullest. Never slowing down as he races from one moment to the next. Is taking the time to notice and jot them down to memory.
These are not quick, sweeping scratches of lead. But meticulously measured lines calculated to take on the form of their visage. Every flaw, every nick, every piece that comes together to make them a whole, living mechanism perfectly replicated and accounted for.
There are no vibrant hues or eye-catching gestures that make one feel like they were sculpted from silk, but there is beauty in the exact distance between your eyes.
And if Kremy instinctively begins to still at the sight of a ruler taking his measurements from a distance, to afford time to a man who's only ever had it taken from him well that's between him and the good Baron.
#once upon a witchlight#gideon coal#kremy lecroux#he ended up getting mentioned cause of course he wld#damn this was just gonna be a post about gideon making detailed diagrams of his friends#sorry about that i got lost in the dichotomy between engineering technical skills and art#my fellow stem majors hear me out#artists are not our polar opposite but actually a lot more closer to our profession than we think#YOU may be an artist and not even realize#this is also practice to further develop my idea of how gideon expresses his feelings#like i think with how explosive gideon can get that the assumption is he wears his feelings on his sleeve#but like hes very particular about which emotions leak out while the rest are locked up tight#does that make sense#like i think a lot about his form of affection is heavily tied to his utility#but im getting off the point again

Anya got rejected to medical school eight times, but tbh that's not as bad as it sounds. Originally, I thought it meant that she got rejected for eight application cycles/years straight, but she probably just applied to eight schools and got rejected from all of them. She's mentioned to have no savings back at home and applications are expensive asf, so I think it's realistic if she applied for only 2-3 cycles/years to only 2-3 schools and got rejected eight times from that. Imo it's less realistic that she only applied to one school for eight years and kept getting rejected (despite this, I still think she's in her late twenties/early thirties tho)
But tbh it's not even unrealistic to think that she applied to eight schools in 1 cycle/year. Was talking to my TA who's applying to medical school, and she applied to seven. Medical schools are ridiculously competitive hard to get into, so tbh it's not even that bad that she got rejected eight times, nor is it any indication of her being "incompetent" or "stupid" (,:
FUCK Jimmy's and his stupid comment "Because she's... you know." Getting rejected from medical school isn't uncommon and she's evidently a great medic bc she kept Curly alive in his state (I'm ignoring plot armor and giving all the props to her)
#anya mouthwashing#mouthwashing#anya mw#nurse anya#mouthwashing headcanon#i always get so annoyed whenever ppl get nursing and medical school mixed up#two diff professions! they're both very important yet distinct and anya wanted to be a doctor not a nurse#nursing school is not for ppl who failed to get into medical school!! it's its own thing that u gotta go to school for#and anya didn't even go into nursing school (which takes around 2 years for the actual program) she took pony express courses#talk to me abt pre-med anya headcanons i know a bunch abt the process since i used to be one too lol#textpost

Poverty, poverty knock / Keeping one eye on the clock / I know I can guttle, when I hear my shuttle / Go poverty, poverty knock...
...so I read @nothwell's novel 'mr warren's profession' at approximately light speed the other day and felt like drawing some of the cast.
#em draws stuff#mr warren's profession#tagging l to r as usual#miss brewster#<- she doesn't even have a first name but she's a major character in my heart.#emmeline rook#lindsey althorp#aubrey warren#vibes on this one visually are '1890s from memory but other eras have crept in because that's not my usual setting'#and the backgrounds are scanned (text) and traced (flourishes) from 1893 newspapers from my college!#which is why I posted maybe ten different screenshots from old newspapers t'other day. They're Fun.#this was a rather interesting read for me because this is not at all my usual genre of choice as I am probably not the intended audience#(to wit: quite ace)#but also I've never really seen an author do this thorough a fictional portrayal of so many various threads of 19thc queerness before#it's a motivation like any other and I think that's executed very well! and also of course I Do like to hear in great detail about textiles#and mills and looms and analytical engines!!!#more commentary wrt choice of character... we have both My Very Favorites and also we have The Protagonists.#the protagonists oughtn't be forgotten despite my instant and known affection for a union-organiser in a flat cap#you know how it is with union-organisers in flat caps :]

ok my OTHER reflection:
on the one hand its really frustrating to see the posts about docs and healthcare in general on here be so narrow-minded. bad experiences with certain providers have lead to a huge spread of misinformation and mistrust with the whole system. which can and HAS lead to people avoiding 'evil' doctors for perfectly treatable illnesses and dying from them (the vaccine bullshit, anyone?)
but on the other hand. it is TERRIFYING how some of these docs practice medicine. at times i think 'are you just burned out and don't give a shit or are you straight up just stupid?' and i work in critical care. where quite literally every case is life or death. even in the academic sector where there is supposedly a standard of excellence, some doctors i would not let touch my loved ones with a ten foot pole.
and that sucks. i know this is the no nuance piss on the poor webbed site but 'the medical system and people that work for it are fallible and aspects of it are morally questionable at best/unethical at worst' AND 'the field of medicine exists to help people first and foremost and mistrusting/avoiding it can be detrimental in the long run' can and DO co-exist
#also. folks i hate to tell you but 'doctors get big pharma kickbacks and they can cure you but just choose not to to get more money'#is a very tempting conspiracy theory. but it is SO UNTRUE.#hey listen. if someone is telling you they can 'cure' your disease magically if you just take x vitamin THEY ARE LYING#even miraculous cures like bone marrow transplants for autoimmune disease and CAR-T therapy#have such severe side-effects that they quite literally kill you#i can't tell you how many times i've taken care of people who#had their cancer 'cured' but the treatment ruined their kidneys/heart/lungs#or fucked their immune system so bad that a common bacteria could completely take them out#anyone selling you miracles is L Y I N G#i understand that a lot of this anger is around disability and chronic illness and psych and i get that. intimately.#its 100% accurate to say that a patient who researched independently about ehlers-danlos or POTS knows more about it than i do.#and its hard to see the profession as 'people who sincerely ARE trying to help' when you actively work with people who fucking suck#and you think like 'you went to school. you went through all this training. you (presumably) passed boards'#we should have at least around the same level of knowledge#but that is often not the case#still#making large scale statements about an entire profession (especially when its supposed to be a civic service) is just... not good#my two cents rec for this is:#if you think you have something rare or unusual try to find a doc that specialized in this i.e. go to an academic center.#trainees are less set in their ways and can think outside the box PLUS if there are new/innovative treatments they would have them#if you need pretty much ANY surgery. private is the way to go#you want surgeons with high volume and experience#surgical techniques do not change on the dime. most havent changed in 50+ years. a lot of other medicine DOES#(this of course does not apply to specialized surgeries like whipple or PTE or schwannoma resection - go to academics for that)#if its REALLY rare whether medical or surgical your GP will not know what to do with you#academic centers are referral centers. they are more likely to have the right tools to diagnose/treat#where was i going with this?#oh yeah i had an odd interaction with an ED doc admitting to me last night that was NOT practicing within current standard of care#and was just so casual and assured i started to doubt MYself. like. am I the crazy one?!?!#like i'm young i dont know everything SURE

"Debilitating period pain that makes you pass out is normal. Suck it up."
"Third time in the ER in a week? Well, here's some more ibuprofen, go home."
"No, your vision hasn't changed. [I can't believe you wasted my time like this (was the doctor's tone of voice).]"
"You have [condition] because you're fat. Lose some weight."
"Your teeth have bad stains, you must be chewing tobacco and lying about it."
“Nothing is wrong with your ears, just stop sticking stuff in them.”
"You must be lying about being a virgin because of this weird lesion on your [censored]."
“You’re too young to have these problems [so just gonna lose limbs I guess].”
"You're not actually in any pain at all, you're delusional. This is certain because you have a mental illness. Oh yeah, nice to meet you."
#the fury i'm feeling right now on behalf of my loved ones#one of these was me but the rest are people i love#i just can't with the medical and dental profession#they meet a person ONE TIME for A FEW MINUTES#and make all these judgments about them#and of course these judgments don't help#in fact they AVOID help and are demoralizing#and discourage the patient from ever seeking help anywhere else#i don't usually make posts like this but i cannot figure out how to help my beloved and i just needed to scream about it#also please don't go commenting political stuff on this post i will delete it if you do#this blog doesn't do politics and this post is about my loved ones#who are HUMAN and deserve proper care by the nature of their humanity#so yeah just wanted to pre-empt any of that#ugh

I'm just bitter because I couldn't make it but I think it's really awesome how it's just entirely fine by widely accepted legal moral and emotional standards to honest to god academically traumatize entire classes of people and it's just kind of silly and quirky lol that professor's such a hardass it's really a weeder class
#People have talked about the disgusting fucking horrific effects this has on the medical system which is maybe its foremost crime#but I think it's really just abhorrent in itself#The way it's so fucking normalized. Can we kill someone. I am of course again malding bc I couldn't make it#but maybe that's more of a reason to mald rather than less. Shrug ee moe jee.#''This is a weeder class'' Why don't you weed yourself from the profession#Or perhaps the human population

on one hand i feel strongly that we need to steal shakespeare back from posh people who have ruined it with their received pronunciation abominations, on the other hand they have ruined it so utterly that i don't want to.
#that said: OTHER PLAYS EXIST GUYS! tell me about your SECOND-favourite early modern dramas!#i mean i can't speak ye olde well enough for this stuff either but actually i find the rp seems to make it worse somehow?#but the accents and the poshness and the privilege and prestige of course all interact.#this is why i hate claims that the thor movies are 'shakespeareran' - it's a blatant prestige-claim but it's not a neutral one#and yet it's presented like this isn't a fandom that drips with classist tropes and poshness-fetishising anglophilia.#and obvs this shakespeare shit very directly interacts with the classism of the acting profession and the (re)increasing domination of#it by the fancy classes.#pray tell why you think patrick stewart's acquired accent sounds more like john of gaunt than his original yorkshire?#5 bonus marks if you bring up the fact he only talks like that so he'd get cast in productions of shakespeare (etc).#so anyway there's a task here that could be accomplished probably but i don't even want to reclaim this shit any more u know?#i think anything 'old' has a bit of this because of the aura of 'the classics' and 'the western canon' but this is perhaps where it most#stands out like a sore thumb on a glovemaker's son.#class#don't mind me just filling the queue from drafts again

not to rant on main but like does anyone else know people who go on and on about their own complexity and intelligence (particularly at the expense of others) but actually just fail to be interesting at all. im talking the girl who calls herself a neurodivergent baddie who only likes weird people but then gets shady when youre weird in the wrong way. or who says they hate small talk and wanna talk about theology and literature and philosophy but get weirded out when people actually start having discussions. like the person who talks themself up as kind and introspective but just ends up being a bully. this very very specific type of person and ive met multiple people like this and i cant help but get tired of it. the whole higher plane superiority act.
#boink#rant#if this makes sense to anybody#ugh#it probably does not#its just so frustrating#like how many people do i have to meet#who think theyre the most interesting person in the world#like the tortured artist trope trying and failing to fulfill itself#because it ultimately is not as complex or interesting as you want it to be#and because why are you saying that you contain multitudes and others do not#that is so self centered#that is such an uninteresting view of life from someone who professes themself to be enlightened as they are#it just drives me up a wall#to see people coopting 'neurodivergence'#to be like oh im special#like girl you are a bully#youre on a sparkly high horse and youre riding over the people who are trying to walk#god like just can we stop romanticizing the idea of neurodivergence#number one its such a broad term that it basically means nothing when applied like people so commonly do#and number two its incredibly damaging to constantly conflate neurodivergence with just being cute and quirky#like just say youre cute and quirky#bring back being weird#like you can be that and be neurodivergent yes of course#but god i just get tired

^^ Screenshot of og post that I already rbed but I’m talking abt here lest op see my tags 😭😭😭
So um. The way that I’m saying this kind of thing to Murdoc loooong before I ever find out that he is as dangerous as he is. And he’s just biting his tongue so hard he tastes his own blood to keep from saying some shit like, “Oh, I assure you, it does~”
#it’s a better place since you came along#sorryyyy I want him to be soo so so crazay abt me <3#he is always soooo close to just dropping that bomb of truth on me abt his profession. his nature.#so much so that he’s always holding himself back from slipping in little hints abt what he is#and of course I percieve all of those hints that do slip through as dark humor#especially since I ALSO have a dark sense of humor sometimes#so it never really occurs to me how deadly serious he is abt some of the fucked up shit he says 😭

Being a niigo fan is so hard because 90% of the people you'll talk to only care about the They Are Depressed part and none of the other fun themes the story conveys
#Being A Woman is a big theme of niigo but no one except me and 15 other people care about that frowns#I think the way it approaches 4 different fonts of The Girl Experience And More Specifically Its Negatives is very interesting!!!#all of the girl groups have Girl Status And The Fun Things That Means For You as a theme to some degree I think#but I think it's most concentrated with niigo#the mental illness featured w niigo is also cool of course. I like it too#but that's not All there is to it#honestly this is also one of the plagues of being a MMJ fan I feel like most people only care about 'hope' and 'the idol industry'#which again are cool things to make a story out of but there's more!!!!! I'm always thinking about those idols and the impossible standards#they were/are expected to achieve due to being ladies#The Scrutiny They're Under Is Not Just Because Of Their Profession

I think she's aiming for more than friends and I think she's so friendly and so pretty so.... get a brain#She's well out of your league bro lmao#But also everyone wanted deets after we finished talking#And I was like oh idk her age or job or anything like that we were talking about dreams and then modern technology being shit#And then clothes and then animal personalities and then I just don't remember but she told me to come to salsa classes with them lmao#I don't do regular hi what is your profession questions

fyi therapist and counsellor aren’t protected terms so no actual qualifications are required to become one.. please check who it is that you’re actually seeing and that they’re qualified to be looking after you because your therapist could be literally anybody if you’ve gone private
#honestly it worries me#because everyone online talks about how they’ve got a therapist#and I’m like???#your mum could go do a level 2 in counselling at college#which is piss easy by the way me and some colleagues did the free level 2 course online when we were bored#get the basic skills and then call herself a counsellor and start taking private clients#check their credentials#if a professional is offended about you asking their qualifications fucking run#because it means they haven’t actually got any#and whilst we’re at it statutory mental health services aren’t run by people with a psychology background#because the NHS won’t hire anyone without a core profession which psychology isn’t counted as#that’s why you think they’re shit#because they are#counsellor#therapist#therapy
