What got you into photography, and what led you to take up concert photography as a specialty?

I actually wasn’t into photography until I started going to concerts. I went to a lot of shows and couldn’t get very good photos with my phone back then. I thought it was fun and decided I would just do it as a hobby, I didn’t know it could be more back then. So, I went and got a basic camera and starter kit and went out to multiple shows a week. Eventually, I got pretty good and started meeting the bands.

What was your first concert?

My Chemical Romance and Muse

Festivals or singular shows?

It depends on the lineup. Festivals give me an excuse to travel and there’s more time to connect with people but local shows are great. Both are opportunities to discover new music, which I love.

Favorite concert experience?

That’s difficult cause I’ve seen so many amazing artists, but when I first moved up here I saw Third Eye Blind and it was amazing. There were lots of technical difficulties, the sound was off, and they kept going. When the sound just kept failing they did a very intimate acoustic show and told us the backstory behind some of the songs. It was incredible.

Number one band you wish you could’ve seen live?

Janis Joplin, I have her lyrics tattooed on my arm. Second would be Spice Girls, I love Scary Spice.

Explain the meaning behind Smiling Eyes?

I was just thinking of the word smize and the fact that it means smiling eyes, and I was already looking to change my business name. Luckily when I looked it up no one had it. It was the first step to becoming a real business.

When did you realize you wanted to make a career out of this?

When I moved to Atlanta. I just got tired of obstacles blocking me from what I wanted to do.

When Stephanie first came across my timeline, she seemed very nomadic, almost like a wanderer, searching for something. There was passion and adventure, but now there’s somehow peace, as well as focus. In my opinion, a working artist is born twice. The first time is when they discover their passion, the second is when they discover that passion could become a career. It’s truly remarkable to witness that growth in a person, to see the way they change when they find the true power of their passion. Stephanie isn’t wandering anymore, her road is clear.

Walk me through your first gig as a concert photographer.

This band from my hometown Spread the Dove was playing. My photos were terrible, but the band was really nice to me.

I’m extra when I edit, cause I’m super critical and like to outdo myself. I like to capture life, and it can be pretty sporadic

I’ve seen you travel with a few bands here and there, what’s tour life like?

Definitely not glamorous, but lots of laughs, priceless moments, and there’s a great bond formed through the experience. I love that I’ve been able to build that sense of trust and friendship with some of the bands I’ve traveled with, it gives us a chance to collaborate and experiment more to make things more unique.

Rather than take a professional stance and just ignore a viral tweet from some random user on Twitter, Cherif hit back with, “Lol. They need all that production because the DJ’s just push play and fake a ‘performance.’

I will one hundred percent drop money at a rave festival where the acts typically aren’t late or getting arrested and I actually have value for my buck and I’m not even an EDM fan like that but come on.

Forbes‘ 2018 “World’s Highest-Paid Celebrities” list is particularly juicy. Kylie Jenner, makeup mogul and mother of Stormi, is the woman sitting at the top of the round up. Before taxes and management fees, the youngest Kardashian/Jenner sibling racked in $166.5 million USD over the past 12 months, placing her behind only boxer Floyd Mayweather ($285 million) and actor George Clooney ($239 million).

What’s *most* interesting to me, however, is how much more the self-made almost-billionaire earned than the usual top contenders. Not only did she out-earn his sister, Kim Kardashian West ($67 million), and momager™, Kris Jenner ($34.5 million), she out-earned BEYONCÉ (!!!)—who was the woman in the top spot in 2017. Queen Bey, who headlined Coachella and charged me a fortune for tickets to her tour, made $60 million this past year, meaning she earned only 36% of what a 20-year-old who sells lip-kits made. We truly are living in crazy times. (No shade to Kylie Jenner, you’re doing great sweety.)

What’s most disappointing about this list is that lack of women on it. There are only 15 ladies among the ranks of the world’s highest-paid celebrities, a drop from last year’s 16. It’s a step up from Forbes recently released “World’s Highest-Paid Athletes” list, which didn’t included a single woman this year. Shockingly, in film, music, sports, “being famous”—and realistically, every other professional industry—the gender wage gap is alive and well.

Who else did Kylie Jenner out-earn? I’ve rounded up a select 17 people who piqued my personal interest. (Explainer: there are no athletes or 90’s rock bands in this gallery. Mostly, it’s just women. And then Ed Sheeran.) For Forbes full list of top 100 paid celebrities, click here.

Fantasia Comic Con returned to Indio, CA for it’s second year! The event took place on May 12th and 13th. It was a family friendly convention, packed with plenty to do an see. Here we have provided highlights from Fantasia Comic Con 2018! Panels, Cosplay, Special Guests and more.

Guests & Panels

The guests at the convention were truly great. You had creators, producers, artist and actors in attendance. Being able to hear them speak at panels about real stories about the entertainment industry, new updates on their work and personal stories of success and struggles was truly inspiring. It was an intimate look at what they do.  Some of our favorite discussions centered around advice on how to break into he comics industry, what publishers look for, where they founds their artists and how they got their books published.

On a panel together was Emmy-nominated Producer/Director of THE X-MEN Animated show Larry Houston and American stunt woman, actor, professional wrestler, and sports radio personality Janeshia Adams-Ginyard! Janeshia played two separate roles in Marvel’s Black Panther, as the stunt double for lead actress, Danai Gurira’s character Okoye, and as one of the eight Dora Milaje, the women of Wakanda, who serve as Black Panther’s personal bodyguards.

Cosplay & Cosplay Competition

The Cosplay Competition Incentives were very impressive for such a small con and I am truly surprised that it did not receive a bigger attendance of cosplayers. There was a decent turn out of cosplayers, but I have no doubt that if the prizes for next year’s competition are just as good, the cosplay crowd will be much larger. They had three competition level.  ADULT – 18 years and over. 1st prize: $750.00, MIDDLE SCHOOL/HIGH SCHOOL – 1st prize: $500.00 and BABY COSPLAY – 4 years and under. 1st prize: $250.

The gaming area next to the main stage had crowds all day on Saturday, although a very loud area, often drowning out the voices on the panels on the main stage, it was probably one the most popular areas at the convention.  It looked like a lot of fun.

Vendors

There was a wide variety of vendors, art dealers and exhibitors at this event.

One of the really exciting things was that since it is a much smaller con, you have an opportunity to talk to comic book creators and artist. We don’t recommend you monopolize too much of the guest’s time, but it is exciting to talk to them about their work.

Exhibits

Exhibits included the Back to The Future DeLorean on display as well as Photo Prop Standees located around the exhibit hall.

Replica of the famous “Delorean Time Machine” from “Back to the Future” is owned and driven by Lenny Hochteil under the name 1.21 GIGAWATT GUYS

For a small donations you were allowed to take photographs in the car and with the hoover board

Venue

The event took place in one of the buildings at Riverside County Fairgrounds. The entire convention took place in one  building. Inside the building there was a main stage where panels took place in the exhibit hall, a gaming area, vendor, autograph signing and exhibits area as well.  The set up of the main stage was nice because you could walk around and happen upon the panels. At other comic book conventions you have the panels separated and may not even know that there are panels going on.

Parking:

Parking was an affordable $6 a car. This is huge for those of us who are used to paying almost $40 a day in parking at larger conventions in Southern California. The parking lot was large and close to the convention hall doors.

Food:

Food was available in the convention hall building. Prices were affordable and reasonable but the selections were limited. If you have any kind of food restrictions we recommend eating outside of the event. There were several fast food restaurants in the nearby area. Most of them a short drive down the street.

Pricing 

The event admission was $30 for two days. Definitely a great price if you plan on attending both days.

Overall: It is a small convention with a lot packed into. It is perfect for those who want to get real insight into what it is to break into the Comic Cook Industry. It’s great for families. It isn’t overwhelming and there was plenty of room and time to check out everything that was going on at the con. We came across this convention through chance. It was recommended for us on Facebook because we were attending a similar events. I was surprised I had not heard of it before. The list of guests were really great and the Cosplay Competition incentives had the potential to gather a much larger crowd. I wouldn’t be surprised to see next year’s event draw a much larger crowd from the Southern California Area. We would definitely recommend it for families who do not want to be overwhelmed by the large crowds, cosplayers interested in the Cosplay Competition and true Comic Book enthusiasts.

(31 Days after the fact) 🎊 2017 has been an amazing year for my photography. I've worked with both friends and models alike, from casual shoots to professional exposure. I've also gotten to meet YouTubers and DJ's, as well as working with lots of local businesses. I meant to make this earlier, but I had to take a bit of a break for my health.
