Hey Trans Folks--Important Finasteride Fact

Finasteride causes temporary hair loss, known as Finasteride shedding, that starts roughly 2 weeks-2 months in to beginning treatment. My doctor did not mention this to me, so I googled it in a panic yesterday after running my fingers through my hair had me pulling away 20-30 hairs at a time. So if you started taking Finasteride to counteract hair loss or encourage new hair growth, please don't panic and think it's not working! Hair regrowth is a long, slow process, and you won't start to see new grown until the 3-6 month window, with full results showing up after a year. This site focuses on cis men, but does offer good information about Finasteride treatment and hair shedding. Also if you didn't know about Finasteride and are experiencing hair loss on testosterone, or experienced hair loss before starting estrogen/spiro (and spirolactane isn't helping you on that front), talk to your care team about finasteride. I'm on T and I take finasteride too! It's a little annoying because they DO prescribe finasteride to trans WOMEN specifically for its de-man-ifying effects. Specifically that it stops testosterone getting to your skin, so it stays soft like a woman's, and it does prohibit facial hair growth as well as preventing hair loss. But my hair means a lot to me so as long as I'm on T I'm gonna take finasteride.

I do wonder if going back on T is going to help my autoimmune stuff. I felt pretty good last year when I was weight-lifting and doing weekly shots, and then I stopped T (due to hair loss) and everything fell to shit again.

speaking of hair loss, it took a lot of going back and forth with my doctor before she would prescribe finasteride. she wanted very badly to prescribe minoxidil (less effective) instead, because finasteride can cause birth defects if you're pregnant. please note that I am not pregnant, and if I find out I am pregnant, it will not take much time before I am not pregnant again. my doctor finally gave in, on the condition that I talk to a pharmacist and have them explain all the risks to me.

anyway, so the pharmacist said you're a great candidate for finasteride, let's do that. and then the pharmacist said please don't take minoxidil, you already have low blood pressure and that med would lower it further.

SO I'M A LITTLE ANNOYED that my health was placed at a lower priority than the health of a hypothetical fetus by my primary care physician. but hey, that's what having a uterus is all about!

i’m a hair transplant believer. there’s a video of him where there’s a strip at the back of his head that was devoid of hair - as in they took a strip there to transfer to another part of his scalp. i also believe he takes medication like finasteride or propecia to delay accelerated hair loss. there’s been times he was spotted with redness on his scalp area where the mcdonalds bald spots are - i firmly believe he’s doing hair treatments those days. i also think he does scalp microneedling to stimulate hair growth.

but a lot of his own fans think he had an attempted transplant that failed. i think it's because for a period maybe his first album his hair looked a bit better, but it's quickly shedded.
