Day 24 - Royalty/Fantasy
When Miller was a child, he had been fascinated by the tales of knights and dragons that originated on Earth.
He had given in to a private smile when he first arrived on the Rocinante. Fancy calling a ship after the horse of foolish Don Quixote, the knight so pathetic he couldn’t tell the difference between a dragon and a windmill. He had to admit, that if you put Holden on horseback he probably wouldn’t be much better at distinguishing the difference, but it was still a funny idea.
Nonetheless, despite having grown in years, Miller’s fascination had yet to fade. There was something almost abject about the way a knight would pledge his service to a corrupt, pitiless king.
Perhaps it was because he found the regrettable pledge of service a bit too relatable.
He had never envisioned himself as a knight in shining armour. He was more of the scrambling dogsbody - a young boy that spent so much time in service, one day he woke up and was an old man. And as he grew into that old, aching body, he came to realise he was doing the bidding of a cruel and merciless master.
Earth.
Star Helix had long been in the pay of Earther corporations, but it wasn’t until he’d been put on Julie Mao’s case that he quite registered it. In this mockery of a fairytale, men like Jules-Pierre Mao were the kings, and men like Miller did not even earn themselves the titles of knights.
Nonetheless, he’d donned his invisible armour - or perhaps that was simply his hat - and gone in search of his damsel in distress.
Julie Mao was no helpless princess in a tower. She was a warrior maiden, riding like Joan of Arc into the middle of battle, prepared to give her life and take others. In this case, Miller felt more like Don Quixote, helplessly chasing after Dulcinea. It made no matter - he had taken up his sword, and he would not let it down until he had defeated the dragon, the corrupt king, and taken a new queen.
Lying on his bunk in the Rocinante, shortly after fleeing from Eros station, Miller laughed quietly to himself.
The foolish knight had chased his windmill, and been impaled in the process.
Part of him was disbelieving in how myopic he had been, but deeper inside, it all sort of made sense. For years he had absorbed himself in stories, seeking the answers to questions that plagued every Belter who had too much time. Why did they serve these fickle kings? Why were they always the servants, and never the masters? Who would come to save them when the great dragon arrived, and all the world went up in flames?
Turned out the world went up in protomolocule, not in flames, for all it matters.
He had lost his maiden, and almost been killed by the dragon.
Yet Miller still believed himself a knight, and if Holden was willing to fight windmills, then so was he.

Just finished the expanse S2 finale, having already read the books
Wait wait so Julie is incapacitated by protomolocule, can't feel her limbs, wakes up naked and disorientated in a strange place and then Miller who she has never met takes the liberty to hold and KISS her with no sign of consent and the show tries to make this into a beautiful moment with soaring music and pretty blue (deadly) floaty lights?!
NO NO NO NO NO
#the expanse#julie mao#i am enjoying the show overall#but no no no no no#i can excuse this scene as Miller being Millet who has Problems#its been a while since i read the books but i thought in the books hr iust holds her hand#but its presented as something romantic#uagh no#spoilers

me and the house have been watching the expanse, and like, i'm a huge fan of the subtle characterisation that goes on, and like the layered drama to a lot of the scenes
i'm still sadly like. idk i'm one of those people who finds a lot of sci-fi stuff kinda goofy, so like when it gets to the protomolocule and stuff i'm like. okay this is just silly.
but like the politics and the character drama are actually like. impeccable to me.

Mapmakers of old had a specific warning of known dangerous areas. They would annotate either unknown or proven dangerous territory on maps with the phrase "Here there be dragons." Eros DEFINITELY would have warranted this, if it hadn't been flung into Venus. And, now maybe they need that sign on Venus. Episode 11, in many respects, is about loss. We find out that Naomi had and lost a child. Bobbie loses her faith in Mars. Holden continues to lose his balance between two competing "honor interests."
I’ve generally done detailed recaps BUT, I am reminded that the Syfy website has a lovely recap of its own, so instead I’m going to comment on significant events. Go here for the syfy.com recap: http://www.syfy.com/theexpanse/episodes/season/2/episode/11/here-there-be-dragons.
During the flashback, it’s interesting that Mei (Leah Jung) seems to like Dr. Strickland (Ted Atherton) and also that he grabbed milkweed. More importantly, it has a chrysalis attached to it. Amos (Wes Chatham) recognizes that not only did Holden (Steven Strait) not stop him from killing “Chicken Boy” but might have liked to do it himself. Holden justifies that behavior by what he thinks he is preventing.
It’s a critical plot point that Naomi (Dominique Tipper) actually has a baby boy that she lost.
We get a hint of Bobbie’s (Frankie Adams) complex backstory in her dialog with Martens (Peter Outerbridge), where he discusses how wonderful Bobbie has been (until now) and how proud Bobbie’s father was. But, the generational gap is displayed in Martens disdain for Bobbie’s concern over Mars’ actions and even her appreciation of Earth’s ocean. It’s worth wondering about what is “eating” the probes that the Arboghast is launching into Venus. Doctor Iturbi (Ted Whittall) knows that to simply launch the last two probes will not get them any results. He also notes that SOMETHING is happening on Venus. The structures around the impact crater can’t be natural. Colonel Janus (Conrad Pla) notes what sailors of old said, and he clearly is worried about what they might find OR stir up. Avasarala’s (Shoreh Agdashloo) discussion with Errinwright (Shawn Doyle) is crucial. Because she still likes Errinwright, she gives him a head’s up. This is a risky action and perhaps a rare misstep in Avasarala’s assessment of people. It clearly bugs Sadavir more than he lets on, that Avasarala won’t “stand up” for him, but she’s horrified at his actions connected to the protomolecule weapons program. We see that Avasarala is making a play to keep Bobbie by interfering with the shuttle. When they left that platform, I wanted to punch Martens in the face for his dissing of Bobbie.
Sometimes Alex’s (Cas Anvar) character, although integral, doesn’t seem quite as significant as the others. This episode allows us to truly appreciate his intuitiveness and his actual brainpower. He figures out that there’s something significant about the ship Karakum, which is being allowed “unmolested” access to Ganymede that no other ship is being granted, and he reasons out quite a clever little plan to allow him to get to Ganymede to rescue the team. (Note that because the show is extremely concerned with science realism, they actually devoted a blog entry by Naren Shankar, the showrunner, to explaining why the science involved in Alex’s maneuver can’t work within the confines of the timeline. That’s dedication!). Regardless of pure accuracy, the trajectory plotting is graphically awesome.
Dr. Strickland is in many respects one of the most creepy characters, because he seems kind and utterly rational, but what he is discussing with Mei about the Chrysalis is HORRIFYING, especially since he asks Mei “doesn’t she want to change?” And, we know what the protomolecule is capable of.
I love Amos’ ability to cut through the bullshit: “It means the station is fucked. It just doesn’t know it yet.”
Bobbie demonstrates that SHE isn’t the one that is “weak.” Ultimately, she points out that Martens clearly didn’t know her father or her family that well, because the story he relayed wasn’t about her, it was actually her father. And, this means that Bobbie’s father clearly wasn’t all that proud of her. This conversation is critical, because it demonstrates the depth of loss of Bobbie’s faith in what the Martian Congressional Republic actually stands when she sees its willingness to sacrifice her team for the sake of a deadly weapons system. There are critical areas in the book series which show the risk of Nationalism, and in some cases, Worldism (to include the OPA) and Species-ism. Martens demonstrates the influence of the HATE he still carries based on the war that Mars and Earth carried out.
One of my favorite scenes is Bobbie hitting Martens in time to her “What (smack) killed (smack) my (smack) team (smack)!?” That was viscerally satisfying. She gets to the root of the actual circumstances of the Ganymede attack. Martens doesn’t realize how easy he made it for Bobbie to go to the UN, because he strips her of her soldier identity, as well as her faith in the Martian vision. What does Mars hold for Bobbie? She’s disillusioned. I love that the UN building looks like it was built in the 1970s. Love that cement bunker style.
Cotyar (Nick Tarabay) meeting Bobbie for the first time and sizing her up is hilarious. Bobbie: “What the fuck are YOU looking at?” “I’m not entirely sure.” It’s interesting that while Bobbie is horrified at this weapons transaction, Avarsarala doesn’t seem to have the same level of disgust at the UN’s sickening actions, even though they are equally appalling. Bobbie hands over Martens data unit – I liked how it was see through. I love that when Alex arrives, he notices that poor Amos got shot again. This is another area in which I which I respect the show, because Amos is not instantly “better” or able to operate magically at 100%. Note that we found out more about JP Mao’s (Francois Chau) family, in particular that he has another daughter, Clarissa.
It took a lot of courage for Prax (Terry Chen) to open the container in the incinerator, knowing it might have been his daughter, Mei. And, it was lucky that the energy of incinerating the hybrid child didn’t create a protomolecule creature! And, the thought of a child in an INCINERATOR! ACK. So, yes, I’m glad that Holden let that doctor die, although the loss of any information that she might have been compelled to give up is regrettable. Naomi was forced for her own piece of mind to stay behind. She has a point about how much more of the protomolecule there could be, but Holden is locked on target about destroying what he KNOWS exists. And, the look on Holden’s face when he watches P-man look at them and run away is sheer determination.
Grade: A-
Next episode: “The Monster and the Rocket” airs on April 12, 2017 at 10pm on Syfy
The Expanse (S02E11) “Here There Be Dragons” Mapmakers of old had a specific warning of known dangerous areas. They would annotate either unknown or proven dangerous territory on maps with the phrase "Here there be dragons." Eros DEFINITELY would have warranted this, if it hadn't been flung into Venus.

SURVIVAL WILDERNESS + FLORIST
oKAY TO STAY WITH ME HERE BUT IMAGINE!!! The expanse universe without the protomolocule. Holden, Naomi & Amos all still work on the Cant but they just miss working together because Naomi and Amos leave before Holden joins, but he only stays on for a couple of round trips before deciding actually, woking on a ship isn't what he wants to do.
What he actually wants to do is run a little flower shop, that has access to more rare finds because of his family connections. So he leaves the Cant, and has a little money saved up and buys a really run down shop space on Tycho (everyone tells him he should be on Ganymede because they're already growing all basically all the food, but that's exactly why he doesn't want to be on Ganymede), and gets like 3 shipments of seeds & plants from his parents and he. sets up shop.
Only Holden has never really lived on a station before or by himself, because when he was in the Navy he was always surrounded by people, and then the Cant didn't give chance for much alone time, and before that he had like. 8 parents. James Holden has never been alone. But now he is. And he's starting to realise there's a bunch of stuff about living and surviving he doesn't know.
Which is how he meets Naomi. He's probably being ripped off by some street vendor because he's an Inner and just kind of clueless, and at first she thinks nothing of it. Let them rip him off. But then she sees him a little later on sharing the food he'd bought with some hungry kids and then even later she sees him again at his shitty little shop talking to a bunch of teeny tiny seedlings that are just sprouting, surrounded by a planter full of flowers.
Naomi's seen plants before, in pictures or from afar or half dead, but she's never seen flowers. Let alone ones in bloom. So she's a little wonderstruck as she watches him talk to the them, and water them and maybe singe a really off key song. Which makes her smile, and maybe let out a laugh before she can stop it, which gets Holden's attention who smiles at her. Invites her in and tells her all about the flowers he's growing.
ANYWAY they have some cute little bonding and teasing moments and Naomi, somehow(not hard, i just fully believe holden is always willing to give up control to naomi), kind of takes over fixing up the shop for him. Which brings Amos into the picture, because the two of them know how to survive on the station, but Holden seems like he knows how to live. And it's just a cute story about them all learning to live and love and survive together. The End😌
hope you like it!! thanks for sending one!💜
send me two and i'll come up with a fic!
#ask#pig-wings#pls. idk WHY my first thought for this was 'yes holden would be a great florist. flowers in his hair. make amos flower crowns everyday'#the expanse#trope mash up

What makes anyone want to play with this protomolocule? What do they think they’ll get out of it? Biological weapons Can’t they just use sarin gas and nerve agents and engineered strains of the pneumonic plague like normal sociopaths?

Okay so here's my take on the Protomolocule, the characters and their growth @miller-bot
This is probably a load of bollocks but my partner and I discussed this after episode 3 of season 4. Mostly ideas that while we don't think are actually accurate, are an interesting way to go with things.
Protomolocule is the generic name they're using for what is actually technology that was created but in like different strands
So you have what is the equivalent of an ai (the stuff that got sent out to form the ring) and then whatever is on the planet that the Not-Miller-But-Miller is trying to get working again
Protomolocule is the thing that got sent out to see if the "infection" is hiding in other places in the universe so when the Creators had to flee bc they were going to be wiped out, they had suitable places to go
Infection: the weird bat like metal things that fly really fast. Hence why the ring had defences against things moving quickly.
Creators: whatever race it was originally that engineered or used the Protomolocule
What we've seen up until this point is almost like an ai. Send it out there to learn and create a wormhole but only once it's learned about where it is.
It didn't understand that dismantling humans would kill them. Or that exploding the ship into it's parts would damage it and the people inside.
It was drawn to the energy and feeds off that but that was instinctive and it wanted to learn more about how that was a thing to then have sustainable food source.
It's like a child learning. It didn't know that if you drop a coffee cup and it shatters then it can't just be put back together like a jigsaw puzzle and be fine again
It needed Julie as the catalyst, and she was able to keep her consciousness and more of herself because she "fought" the infection of the Protomolocule long enough unlike the others on Eros
Miller: teaches it about humanity, their fears and values. What they see when they look around a room, the important things.
Which is where we come to Holden; hes the one that gets places. Which is the goal of the Creators
And Holden is important af to them because he's been saving the galaxy, doing what he can selflessly and somehow that's the defining trait the Protomolocule has latched onto for him - he's trustworthy and will save them/it
The Protomolocule reacts aggressively with people because it's acting like a parasite or virus idek the right word to use but basically with Julie it was an infection that got to go through each stage and then kill her. But with the forcibly infected it ripped them apart more because it didn't have the time to go through each stage
With the hybrids it's like that but worse - both parties know there's something wrong and are fighting each other. In pain, aggressive.
The Protomolocule kept the voices on Eros alive because it didn't want to wipe them out.
I have my theory that the entire thing is focused around the theme of children:
Prax's little girl
Errinwright's sympathy coming from his connection with his kid
Amos being the lost child
Holden being the innocent child / the archetypal child
Naomi losing her chimd
Avasarala's dead kid
Fred Johnson atoning for killing the kids on Anderson Station
It brings the idea to the forefront that whatever we do affects the children in the world and we need to make it a better place for them. There's more to this list but it's currently 4am and my brain isnt working for that.

I Have Loved The Stars, Chapter 4 Amos Burton x OC
Their arrival to the space station was terrifying, to say the least.
She sat alone, strapped into a seat, in full spacesuit, in the med bay while the Roci had gone to battle with a stealth ship. Several bullets cut through the ship and she wondered exactly how expendable to Fred Johnson she was. When the fighting ceased, a few moments later she could hear Alex over the radio, "you okay down there little lady?"
August swallowed down the bile that was trying to escape her body. "Yup, how about you all?"
"We're all okay...lost a pod though. Amos got knocked around a bit so if you could make sure he didn't break any ribs once we're all situated. Holden is gonna board the station shortly. And Amos is going to do temp patches on this ship for the trip back so don't take off your helmet just yet."
"Roger." She fucking hated space suits. Her nose itched.
---
It was a few hours later when the raid of the station was all said and done. Amos had managed to patch up the important part of the ship and he'd already popped into the med bay where she was able to confirm that while he might have some nasty bruises shortly, he hadn't broken anything. As per usual Amos seemed unphased by both his injuries and the strange and stressful circumstances he obtained them under. August wished to herself that she could maintain her composure like that.
August was sitting with Alex in the bridge of the ship a little while later when Holden radioed the Roci and informed them that they were going to be transporting eight prisoners back to Tycho. August was tasked with making sure that they would all survive the trip. From the sound of it, there had been a decent amount of people on the station but the raiding party had shot first and then asked questions. August followed Alex down to the hull of the ship where they were boarding the prisoners.
If August had thought Holden was tightly wound before she wasn't sure what to call him after the raid. She half expected the blood vessel on his head to pop when he had stormed back onto the ship.
Unsure of what exactly had transpired on the station she glanced over to Alex who looked equally perplexed.
"Everything okay, Hoss?" He called after Holden as he strode across the room and aggressively pulled off his spacesuit.
"No. Miller shot the one guy who seemed to have a clue as to what the hell was going on with this whole thing." Holden slammed his helmet down on a table. "August," he said turning his angry gaze to her, "We have one scientist left, he's the one in white. Seems unharmed, but I'm putting you in charge of him. We need him alive." Some of the anger had faded from his voice, but barely. Holden shifted his gaze to behind her, Amos had silently appeared, apparently. "Amos, I want you with her when she's got any of these guys in the med bay."
"Got it, boss." Well, she thought to herself, there are worse babysitters to have. She shifted her gaze over to the prisoners who were all cuffed and walking in an orderly line surrounded by belters who were armed to the teeth. None of the prisoners seemed to care that an enemy force had just stormed their base, shot at least half their comrades, chained the survivors up and forced them out of their home by gunpoint. Either this was something that they'd experienced a lot in their careers or something was wrong. August had spent enough time working for Fred Johnson and seeing prisoners to know that sometimes the leader or right hand remained level headed, but not the whole group. Something was wrong with this picture. She bit the inside of her lip as she trailed after the prisoners and their escort. Amos fell into step with her but kept any thoughts he had about it to himself.
When they reached the brig, the prisoners went into the cell in an orderly fashion. The scientist was last in line. "You," Amos called out with a slight jerk of his chin in the man's direction. "You're going to come with us." The scientist nodded and calmly broke away from the group. Once the rest of the group was safely in the cell Amos entered a code into the pad beside the door which promptly closed and loudly locked.
August glanced at both Amos and the scientist before turning around and headed down the hall. They took the lift up to the second level where the med bay was located. Once they reached their destination the man sighed and looked at her, "I can tell you now that I'm fine and that this is a waste of time." His calm and even tone did nothing to relieve the knot that had begun to grow in her stomach on the silent walk to the med bay. "I need to get back to work. It's important."
"Okay, well I don't know if I can help with that but I have to make sure you aren't injured or sick. If you could -" He cut her off, sounding distressed.
"You don't understand! I need to get back to the protomolocule! We don't have time!" She saw Amos take a small step forward so it would be easier to put himself between the two of them if needed. She held up to the man who had gone from a blank slate to suddenly very animated.
"Slow down. We have to take this one step at a time. I know that can be frustrating but bare with me okay." She offered him a sympathetic smile and he took a deep breath and nodded. “Let’s start with you telling me what your name is. Mine is August.
"My name is Paolo."
"Alright, Paolo. Look I'm not the one making the calls here but I can go talk to the person that is if you want to speak with him. But first I need you to sit over there and let me make sure you aren't hurt. Sound like a plan?" He nodded again and it seemed like any life that had briefly surfaced in him settled back down. Without any more protest, he went and sat in the first of the medical chairs. August glanced over to Amos, feeling fairly bewildered at this entire scenario. He simply shrugged in response. She followed Paolo over to the table and then looked again to Amos who was behind her like a shadow. "Amos, do you have the key to the cuffs? I don't think they're necessary right now." Amos's brow furrowed for a moment.
"No funny business," he said fixing Paolo with a look before stepping to the side of August and using a key fob to unlock his cuffs. Amos then took the cuffs and pocketed them and posted up on the nearby wall.
She grabbed the small light she had in her pocket to do a quick check of Paolo's pupils. Nothing abnormal there. She took his pulse and blood pressure. All normal. He sat still and compliant. She was going to want to do some brain scans when they got back to Tycho and had the proper equipment. If it hadn't been for Paolo's fairly passionate outburst a moment ago she would have guessed this man and his comrades had all been lobotomized. That thought made the knot in her stomach turn again. She did a cursory med scan of his body to make sure there wasn't anything internal that was going to be a short term problem. That too was normal. August wondered to herself if there had ever been a time when this many normal results had only magnified her unease.
"Looks like you’re plenty healthy. Amos and I are going to walk you back to the holding cell now okay?"
"Yes," he said sliding off the table and standing, "But don't forget, you need to tell the captain I want to talk to him."
"I haven't forgotten," she said gently as Amos took the cuffs out of his pocket and put them back on Paolo's wrists.
The walk back to the brig was as silent as the one from it.
Paolo walked into the cell, his expression blank.
"Next," Amos called out. One of the other seven prisoners stepped up, as orderly as if this was just a normal doctor's check-up.
Another silent walk to the med bay. This man's name was Kent. He didn't ask for anything. Didn't ask any questions. And everything physical checked out normal. She chewed at the inside of her cheek as they went down to return him to the cell and get the next prisoner. A silent trip to the med bay. This man was all normal as well. He asked no questions, put up no resistance. His name was Roger. When they returned Roger to the cell, Amos didn't call out for the next person instead he closed and locked the door.
"Break time. We should eat." August gave a non-committal nod, deep in thought and worry about what exactly they had stumbled on. She followed Amos to the kitchen. She took a seat at the long table. She couldn't eat. She was pretty sure she wouldn't be able to hold anything down at the moment. The knot in her stomach had grown into an anxiety stomach ache. Maybe some tea would help, she thought to herself before getting up and sticking a little tea pod in the brew machine. After the tea brewed she grabbed a few packets of milk and sugar and sat back down.
A minute or two later Amos sat down next to her and surprised her when he set down a plate of food not only for himself but for her.
"You need to eat," he said, matter-of-factly. She appreciated the gesture but shook her head.
"I'm not hungry, but thanks."
"You didn't eat before the raid and Cap wants me to keep an eye on you. I'm not doing my job if you get sick."
"I'm not sure that's what he meant, I-"
Amos cut her off "Eat" for emphasis he nudged a fork into her hand. She let out of soft chuckle and took the fork.
"Didn't take you for the mother hen type,"
"Yeah well, when you're upset you make it fairly obvious." He took a bite of his food.
"Sorry?" She asked, unsure if that was a joke or a jab.
"I don't mean that as an insult. It's just plain as day when you find something upsetting. You'd be shit at poker." He took another bite of his food, glanced over to her and smiled.
"Correction, I am shit at poker." She felt the anxiety in her stomach ebb just a little when he let out a quiet laugh.

The Expanse season 4
Many spoilers.
My thoughts up to episode five-
1. Amos first question was how Chrisjen looked. Specifically what she was wearing. Amazing. Basically "I'm sure she's fine, but was she looking hot?"
2. As usual I find the inners to be wrong and suck.
3. As I'm sure everyone agrees Murtry sucks. However I really like his actor and have liked him in everything he's ever been in. (That guys name is Burn btw which is a cool name)
4. Is Holden really the voice of reason over Naomi??
5. Everyone who is saying colonization is probably a good idea? Honestly, they are right. Set up a system to get going on that.
6. The OPA should start letting people through and just have them pay a toll.
7. Poor Bobbie. That's really all. Hope her story picks up and she defeats her baddies or something.
8. Listen, those colonists deserve a good planet. No doubt. But can they actually grow food ok that planet or anything? I've seen some shrubs and a lot of rock and black sand. Also large barbs (is this Xhohas?) of possible doom.
8. Unless the barbs are going to terraform the planet. The protomolocule may have caused many, many deaths, but ultimately it did open the rings opening up intersteller humanity. So maybe they will do good things.
10. Though at the end of episode five it did look like bad might be happening?
That's all for now. More later!

i’ve seen every episode of 3, so definitely 3
15. if you could be anyone from 4, who would you be?
Oh Lyra, wouldn’t we all ? that or maybe a lee scorsby esc character
16. would a crossover between 3 and 4 work?
i’d usually say no but The Magicians can do anything so who the fuck knows
17. pair two characters in 1 who would make an unlikely but strangely okay couple.
i dont really ship much aside from cassie x cole, so idk. but the plot is so good that i dont watch for the ships really
18. overall, which show has the better storyline, 3 or 5?
they have great storylines within their genre. the expanse is one of the best sci fi stories ive ever seen, and it really leans on a mixture of realism and actual science coupled with the futuristic space travel stuff you need, but the magicians is excellent magical storytelling plus a really great absurdity element that they play into SO well. i’d have to say the expanse but the magicians is excellent.
19. which has the better theme music, 2 or 4?
HDM HDM FOR SURE ITS SO GOOD.

“Don’t move, you’re bleeding.”
The surrounding sounds are muffled. Saku can vaguely hear civilians shouting, the sound of gunfire, and the rich, warm sound of Steve’s voice. He’s a lifesaver. If it wasn’t for the latter, she might well have stayed down and died an easy death. But the reaper won’t have her today. Not while there is still a job to do.
“I’m fine. Stop looking at me like dat.” Like I’m already gone. She sits up among the chaos, groaning instantaneously when her eyes land upon the destroyed detonator. Now the bomb would have to be detonated manually rather than remotely, which was not going to be easy since the local thugs appeared to have it in for them. “M’beginning to think we were sold out. Bet it was that board dealer. He looked like a pussy. Last time I trust de Black Market.” A lie, but she needed to tell herself otherwise as a distraction from the pain in her side. The Black Market was far too valuable for Saku to walk away from anytime soon. Where else would she get specialised parts?
Wincing, Saku stands to her feet and reaches for the sealant pack she had stuffed into Steve’s satchel before they departed from the ship. It will have to do, for now, they can’t walk away from what was supposed to be a quiet job, and maybe they won’t walk away at all. But if there’s protomolocule being hidden here on this Martian frigate that they can blow into dust with a controlled explosion, then perhaps death will come for her after all. That’s okay; Saku accepts the possibility with every single mission she takes.
The sealant stings. The empty tube is quickly tossed aside with a hint of venom; she hates using them. “Let’s go, Big Boy. This bomb ain’t gonna explode itself no more.” It’s difficult to move at first. The blood loss is more noticeable than she had hoped. But Saku finds her stride soon enough, and a gun is back in her hand, ready to mow down anyone who gets in the way of their destination.
“Be ready to crack some skulls, eh? We still got a ways to go.”
