Proverbs Daily Reflection – January 13, 2025
Ephesians 4:29: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths. Speak only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. This will benefit those who listen."
Proverbs 13:3 warns us: “Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.” This verse reminds us to guard not only what we say but how we say it. Words are powerful—they can build up or tear down, bring life or destruction. As followers of Christ, we must think before we speak. We need to ensure that our words align with God’s will. Paul reinforces…

one time my mom was talking about something, I don’t remember what, and she said “have you ever known the poverty of having nothing to say?” and when I say nothing has ever punctured my heart quite like that statement
#I don’t even fully know why. also I don’t think she even meant it how I took it#but there is just some part of me that does believe that that is the greatest poverty#when there are no words in your mind or heart. no phrases—nothing to rely on or fall back on#and you just have to struggle with the human condition and be able to express none of it#and I know that not everyone uses words like I do or relies on them that way but people need some words. they need something#this is why a) I never make fun of those Instagram accounts that are all cheesy inspirational quotes or whatever because people are trying#they are REACHING#also b) that’s why villains who are wordlessly violently destructive make me cry#because it’s just like—-yeah I can understand turning to violence if I didn’t have expression#if I couldn’t get anything out#also also this is not related but I watched some movie or tv show the other day (and I cannot for the life of me remember which one it was)#but there was this couple on a date and the girl asks him to complete all these proverbs after she gives him the first half#because ‘a man who knows his proverbs can’t be all bad’ and it shook. Me. To. My. CORE.#also also!! this is why I teach! it’s the heart of it for me!! And why I make them memorize poetry. like.#and put quotes on the board every day. like. You will have words and images in your mind and your heart from my class if I have anything#to say about it#anyway sometimes my mom says things and casually devastates me#and I think (I think) she was just talking about the poverty of having no news because nothing is going on#and so you have nothing to share with someone. and she was talking about my Grandma and how sometimes she was just so sullen and quiet#but it’s just because there was nothing to say#anyway anyway anyway that is also why the one time on the phone my grandma said who has known the mind of the Lord —shook me so much#because she never really said anything. words were not her thing and she never quoted anything#and suddenly her saying this line of scripture that said more than any words I’d ever said —one of the defining moments of my life#tbh. anyway this is very long I’m sorry. I have woken up this morning crying about this. idk.

i think in my particular interpretation, my lavellan is an evasive, self-reliant type of person who doesn't trust others very easily, and does not believe in love as a concept really existing or being applicable to her. so she's kind of ???!?!! about solas, and despite caring for him deeply, is not really able to verbalize her feelings to solas at any point during dai, and so she never actually tells him that she loves him. and after crestwood is just like "wow. i was right to be very solitary for years. this heartfelt stuff SUCKS. love is fake, and you should never get emotionally compromised and too attached to any one person :/" and tries to speedrun her way through rebuilding the impenetrable layer of Ironic Detachment™️ that she had before.
#she is not religious but she does take the Dirthamen Teachings Lifestyle seriously#''keep all your feelings inside and then someday die'' -dirthamen proverb#probably#anyway i also thought the detail of some dalish having actual last names from noble lineages#vs others not having that#is very interesting and particularly with how magic is at least considered to be somewhat hereditary#not in a ''ough they're no better than tevinter!!!!'' way but in the like#microcosms of how people will build a class structure out of nearly anything even in dire conditions#anyway my girl is an ex-city elf with 0 notable lineage whatsoever#and also was a bit of a menace in her youth and so she's technically first through magical capabilities#but in practice any actual leadership is going to be passed to someone else#and she's on ''go deliver faraway messages/investigate this ruin/negotiate with humans'' duty instead#she feels normal and unconflicted about this#afira lavellan#also hey did you guys know that Dalish from the chargers also has dirthamen vallaslin lmao#i got the feeling that it's like a classic excuse to be like ''ohh the clan had too many mages so i'm here :)''#and then it's generally just that they're on spy duty and are mailing their keeper every month with hot gossip updates

"do not lean on your own understanding; lean on God's understanding"
I actually am not capable of escaping my own consciousness. Any and all understandings that are not my own end up getting filtered through my own ability to understand.
"oh but God can just make you understand"
HMMM convenient that he can make me understand something now in order to justify this proverb, but when it comes to explaining suffering it's all "the Lord works in mysterious ways that we can never hope to understand."
I only have my own understanding to lean on.
"Your heart is deceitful. Your emotions fluctuate and you can't trust them."
This is like saying that if you're reading updates to a news article throughout the day, the article can't be trusted because it's changing. Just because things fluctuate, doesn't mean they aren't trustworthy. Emotions provide you information about your body and its needs. Just like the updated news article, some of it is going to be useful for making decisions and some of it won't be. Robust, emotionally intelligent education about managing our emotions and knowing what to do with them is necessary here. Our emotions aren't inherently false, nor should they be discarded wholecloth. Teaching people they can't trust their emotions is worse than not teaching people anything at all about how to deal with their emotions, because it comes with actively harmful practices.
Telling people they cannot trust their emotions, and that they can only truly trust a being outside themselves, hinders the development of healthy emotional regulation skills and increases susceptibility to abuse and manipulation.

Welcome to my evangelism corner…
I know posting twice in a day may be a bit much, but it’s 2am and I’ve spent the last few hours dedicating a corner of my living room to evangelism and prayer, and I would love to share it with you all.
The basket at the top is for tracts, so I have them close to distribute when the moment is right. I have also pinned up the Open Doors 2025 World Watch List so I don’t forget to pray daily for persecuted Christians.
Amongst the shelves are many books that I have not just for myself, but to share with friends and non-believers in the hope of introducing them to the faith.
In the frames are a few of my favourite postcards from The Christian Poster Company that remind me daily of the verses that bring me strength. Proverbs 31 will always hold a special place in my heart.
The jar of Bible verses was a gift from a wonderful friend of mine. I’m so happy that I have a spot in the room where I welcome guests that is dedicated to Christ and dedicated to evangelism.

Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
For the LORD will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.”

"She Opens Her Mouth with Wisdom" — Hey Girls, That’s You and Me!
Happy Mother’s Day to all moms — and to every woman with a heart that nurtures, comforts, teaches, and tends to others with that unmistakable maternal instinct. Let’s be honest: not every woman has children of her own. But oh, how many have mothered the world around them in powerful, quiet, faithful ways. You’ve offered a listening ear, a hot casserole, a comforting hug, or a strong word at…

Exploring Prophets, Faith, and Obedience: A Latter-day Saint Take on Heber C. Kimball and Michelle Grim's Critique
In the rich teachings of Latter-day Saints, the messages from prophets hold profound significance. Heber C. Kimball, in the Journal of Discourses, emphasized the importance of following prophetic guidance as an expression of our faith and obedience. This perspective, however, faces scrutiny from voices like Michelle Grim, who offers a critical view of Kimball’s teachings. In a recent blog post…

The Book of Proverbs, which was probably written by King Solomon, is a text dedicated to the instruction of men in the noblest, perfect, and most excellent science, the wisdom; and for that purpose, are set forth a series of spiritual principles in the sapiential book to always keep in mind to achieve success, happiness, and beatitude. And among the things that the book teaches is that the path that provides wisdom is a gradual, gradual, and progressive path towards that truth that illuminates the minds of men and that no one, no matter how wise, knows everything, that is why humility of heart is so important, the acquisition of wisdom is above all continuous improvement. This is why the Book of Proverbs metaphorically expresses how a personified wisdom gave a wise advice to King Solomon with these words: "My son, if you stop listening to instruction, you will stray from the principles of knowledge" Proverbs 19:27. Men must always live according to science or the principles of knowledge, and not according to their own whims and passions, explains the Book of Proverbs, because error has progressive effects, as the Sacred Scriptures explain: "For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." Hosea 8:7; And so those who do not take this into account sooner or later fail because the famous stumbling blocks or, in other words, destructive unforeseen events arrive. This teaching of Proverbs was something that even King Solomon himself had to learn bitterly when God warned him for having allowed the idolatry of his numerous foreign wives.
