When I met Franco Pascali, I was struck by how much I felt like I was meeting and hanging out with a young street skater. However, instead of witnessing skate tricks he destroyed me by his usage of cards. Much like the world of skateboarding that I was raised in, magic and cardistry are intensely personal and individually orientated in terms of the endless practice that is required to master them. Tricks are performed with decks and each person embodies a style that is distinctly their own. That style is reflective of the influences they devoured when they were coming up and their intrinsic sensibility that they develop as they mature. As I spent time with Franco I immediately wanted to point my camera at him to capture the way he dressed, the way he talked, the breathtaking way he moved cards and the feeling I had in encountering such raw talent. This is our first film.

I'm very happy + honored to be invited back to my old stomping grounds, Raritan Valley Community College, @rvcc_art_gallery , to participate in the exhibition EXPANDING THE VIEW OF PHOTOGRAPHY: from Realism to Abstraction. I learned everything I know about darkroom + alternative process photography at RVCC. It is a wonderful college + art community. “You just don’t get it!” is a spar often traded ad naseum across the rural/urban divide when it comes to conservation. And often, it’s true. One world is full of hybrid cars and meatless Mondays, while the other sits on the front lines of invasive species management and wildfire defense. 

Fortunately, there are groups like Headwaters Economics -- putting their nose to the grindstone to look honestly at the numbers and facts between problems and solutions. Then there’s the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition, a thoughtful group with a wide variety of perspectives closest to the communities that live and breath conservation realities every day. 

It makes sense then to see that their proposal for a “Natural Resources Trust” is not flashy or gimmicky but pragmatic, measured, and based on actual feedback from rural areas. Counties with swaths of federal land have their tax-collecting hands tied. Timber receipts are down. Current systems of PILT, SRS, etc. are unpredictable. Perhaps they just do get it. 

It’s also encouraging to see that our federal representatives’ ears perk up when these kinds of well thought out solutions are suggested. A few weeks ago in Boise, Idaho’s two conservative senators joined decidedly liberal Ron Wyden from Oregon to announce their intention to enact this solution through the bipartisan Forest Management for Rural Stability Act. 

It’s unclear how successful this bill will be--I imagine it may be harder to generate the interest in setting aside $7 billion from folks in areas with less federal land, who are less aware of this problem, and less interested in shouldering the burden.  I look forward to tracking the bill’s progress.

On August 18th from 11am-4pm, RVCC members and car enthusiasts gathered for the opportunity to test-drive the new Ferrari Portofino M.

The Portofino M has a maximum horsepower of 611 and can reach up to 199 mph. The luxury vehicle has an eye-catching exterior, taking a modern twist on a classic look.

Our members had a lot of fun snacking on some treats and admiring its unique features.
