Todos os filmes em que as cenas de sexo foram para valer

A Bula reuniu em uma lista todos os filmes da história do cinema nos quais os atores se envolvem em atos sexuais reais, não simulados. A diferença entre esses longas e a pornografia é que, embora possam ser considerados eróticos, a trama deles não é meramente pornográfica. Ao todo, a lista conta com 264 títulos.

A Bula reuniu em uma lista todos os filmes da história do cinema nos quais os atores se envolvem em atos sexuais reais, não simulados. Nos Estados Unidos, esse tipo de cena era proibido no cinema convencional, mas a partir dos Anos 1960 os cineastas começaram a ultrapassar os limites. A diferença entre esses longas e a pornografia é que, embora possam ser considerados eróticos, a trama deles não é meramente pornográfica. A maioria deles foi lançada nos anos 1970 e 80, com predominância de dois diretores: o espanhol Jesús Franco e o italiano Joe D’Amato. Por repetidas vezes, também aparecem os nomes de cineastas consagrados atualmente, como Lars von Trier, Gaspar Noé e Yorgos Lanthimos.

Put On Your Raincoats #3 | Naked Came the Stranger (Metzger, 1975)

This review contains mild spoilers.

A wife and her husband are lying in bed. The husband is asleep. The wife is not. The wife blows over a tub of menthol onto the husband’s dick. The husband moans in his sleep and calls out a name, as people sometimes do. The problem is, the name he calls out isn’t his wife’s. It’s the name of their assistant on their radio show with whom he’s having an affair. (The motto of their show: "We take them to work and bring them home. We even appeal to those who roam.") Once the wife confirms her suspicions (by eavesdropping outside the apartment they’ve made their love nest while graphically masturbating in the stairwell), she decides to get back at her husband by fucking, sorry, “inspiring the inner man in” three different men so that she can “inspire the inner man in” her husband. This being a porno, what transpires is pretty explicit. This being a Radley Metzger porno (directed under the pseudonym “Henry Paris”), what transpires is also pretty funny.

First there’s her encounter with a man I can only describe as porno Bill Hader, with whom she has the lamest possible BDSM-tinged episode. Then there’s porno Ryan Reynolds, whom she gets off on the back of a double decker bus (apparently she couldn’t find a cab). Then there’s porno Marco Rubio, with whom she has a black-and-white silent-movie-style sequence, complete with wildly mismatched title cards. (This is merely a description of the actor, not an endorsement of the real Marco Rubio.) Along the way, there’s a scene where a woman who looks like Lina Romay sucks off a waiter at a party, meaning that it’s only a little more explicit than many of the real Romay’s movies. (The party featuring the Lina Romay lookalike also has a catty guest who arrives with one friend in a knight costume and unknowingly leaves with another guest wearing an identical knight costume.) And eventually she also makes it with the assistant, and at this point I must report that the wife and the assistant are played respectively by Darby Lloyd Rains and Mary Stuart, who both played different versions of Aggie in Memories Within Miss Aggie, so if you fell asleep during that movie and woke up during this one, you might be very confused.

In case you couldn’t tell from the above, much of this is played for laughs. The scene where the heroine overhears her husband and mistress is punctuated by Rains’ over-the-top facial expressions as she reacts to their insufferably cute dirty talk. The dialogue is loaded with wordplay and delivered with strong comic timing. Metzger gets in light jabs at film critics (the leads interview a horrifically inarticulate critic espousing the auteur theory), the hardcore genre (they struggle to comment on the “redeeming socialist values” of an interview subject’s loop, which they repeatedly note is very “explicit”) and even himself (the characters complain “why didn’t they show the Garbo version?” when Metzger’s earlier film Camille 2000 plays on the TV). Unlike some of his movies, this is shot in New York City instead of Europe, but he places it in picturesque locations and posh residences with well chosen decor and wardrobes to give the whole thing a credible veneer of class. This is a far cry from the grimy hellhole of 42nd Street. The giallo-like mixture of funk rock and lush orchestral music means that the movie is both nice to listen to and look at.

Radley Metzger was my introduction to taking pornographic films seriously as films. His films are appealing in obvious, accessible ways, featuring stylish cinematography, playful editing, good acting and a healthy sense of humour. Earlier films like Camille 2000 and The Lickerish Quartet feel like racier versions of ‘60s art cinema, and his Henry Paris movies, while more explicit, retain their playfulness and stylistic strengths. And while he was capable of taking sex seriously (the BDSM-centric The Image seems catered to folks who are into that sort of thing, but is well made enough that it’s worth seeing even for the more timid), he gets that it can be pretty funny, and mines his sex scenes for their comedic possibilities (the training montage in The Opening of Misty Beethoven that culminates in Constance Money getting three guys off at the same time is the first thing that comes to mind). But I think that’s ultimately where some of the limitations of his approach lie. Metzger shoots, stages and edits these scenes to be as entertaining, stylish or funny as possible, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to eroticism, per se. There are certainly exceptions (I can think of individual sequences in Barbara Broadcast, Maraschino Cherry and The Image), but the specific way in which he applies his technical prowess often works to distance us from the energy of his performers. Still, I’m not going to complain too much about a movie that is this entertaining and well made. If you like Radley Metzger, you’ll have a good time with this. And if you haven’t seen any Radley Metzger, while there are others I might recommend first (Score, The Image, The Opening of Misty Beethoven, Barbara Broadcast and The Lickerish Quartet), this is as good a demonstration of his strengths as any.
