Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez (1959-2021): The Mexican Astrobiologist Who Shaped Our Understanding of The Planet Mars
Tumblr media
Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez was a talented and internationally recognized chemist and astrobiologist who worked at NASA. Navarro-Gonzalez is known for his work with other researchers to study the planet Mars. He made fundamental contributions to several fields related to Astrobiology, the origin of life, and life in extreme environments. Among his many accomplishments, he helped lead the team that identified ancient organic compounds on Mars. He was a Co-I on the SAM instrument onboard NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory and on the HABIT instrument onboard ESA’s ExoMars mission. He was also on the Curiosity Mars rover team. His research blended laboratory simulations, fieldwork, and theoretical modeling in transdisciplines in chemistry, physics, and biology. This sort of dominance is unusual and requires a dynamic and intellectual curiosity beyond normal boundaries. He identified the role of volcanic lightning in the origin of life on Earth. He has established one of the very best laboratories in Latin-America.
He has published 137 papers, 4 edited books and over 225 abstracts. Among the most significant contributions are those that deal the detection of organics in Mars-like environments from cold (Antarctica), temperate (Atacama) and hot (Mojave and Libya) deserts on Earth.
Navarro-Gonzalez was born in Mexico City on April 25, 1959. He earned a bachelor’s in biology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) where he became full professor in 2002, and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Navarro-González established the Laboratory of Plasma Chemistry and Planetary Studies of the Institute of Nuclear Science at UNAM.
Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez was the first recipient of the Molina fellowship award. This prize recognizes outstanding scientific achievement. He was also the recipient of the 2009 Alexander von Humboldt Medal and the World Academy of Sciences Award in Earth Sciences.
He died on Jan. 28, 2021 due to Covid-19-related complications.
In honor of his service, NASA named a mountain on Mars after him. The mountain stretches 450 feet (120 meters) tall, “Rafael Navarro Mountain” is located on Mount Sharp in northwest Gale Crater.

Rafael Navarro Mountain
“Rafael was a good friend and dedicated scientist, and it has been a privilege and honor for our Mars exploration team to work with him over the years" said the principal investigator of Curiosity’s SAM experiment.
“We are truly honored to have a prominent hill named after our dad; it’s his and our dream come true to see this happen,” wrote Navarro-González’s children, Rafael and Karina Navarro Aceves, in a statement to NASA.
“Our dad was an accomplished scientist, but above all, a great human being who managed to balance work and family."

NASA's Curiosity rover sends 'picture postcard' from Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover sends ‘picture postcard’ from Mars
NASA’s Curiosity rover recently captured two remarkable images from the Mount Sharp side of Mars and the mission team has now pieced it together, added colors, and created a ‘postcard’ from Mars. On November 16, 2021, the rover captured a 360-degree view of its surroundings at 8:30 a.m. local Mars time and again at 4:10 p.m. By taking pictures of the landscape at two different times, the…

NASA’s Curiosity rover captured a remarkable image from its most recent perch on the side of Mars’ Mount Sharp. The mission team was so inspired by the beauty of the landscape, they combined two versions of the black-and-white images from different times of the day and added colors to create a rare postcard from the Red Planet.
NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover used its black-and-white navigation cameras to capture panoramas of this scene at two times of day. This was the view at 4:10 p.m. local Mars time.Credits: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Curiosity captures a 360-degree view of its surroundings with its black-and-white navigation cameras each time it completes a drive. To make the resulting panorama easier to send to Earth, the rover keeps it in a compressed, low-quality format. But when the rover team saw the view from Curiosity’s most recent stopping point, the scene was just too pretty not to capture it in the highest quality that the navigation cameras are capable of.
Many of the rover’s most stunning panoramas are from the color Mastcam instrument, which has far higher resolution than the navigation cameras. That’s why the team added colors of their own to this latest image. The blue, orange, and green tints are not what the human eye would see; instead, they represent the scene as viewed at different times of day.
On Nov. 16, 2021 (the 3,299th Martian day, or sol, of the mission), engineers commanded Curiosity to take two sets of mosaics, or composite images, capturing the scene at 8:30 a.m. and again at 4:10 p.m. local Mars time. The two times of day provided contrasting lighting conditions that brought out a variety of landscape details. The team then combined the two scenes in an artistic re-creation that includes elements from the morning scene in blue, the afternoon scene in orange, and a combination of both in green.
At the center of the image is the view back down Mount Sharp, the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) mountain that Curiosity has been driving up since 2014. Rounded hills can be seen in the distance at center-right; Curiosity got a closer view of these back in July, when the rover started to see intriguing changes in the landscape. A field of sand ripples known as the “Sands of Forvie” stretches a quarter- to a half-mile (400 to 800 meters) away.
At the far right of the panorama is the craggy “Rafael Navarro Mountain,” named after a Curiosity team scientist who passed away earlier this year. Poking up behind it is the upper part of Mount Sharp, far above the area Curiosity is exploring. Mount Sharp lies inside Gale Crater, a 96-mile-wide (154-kilometer-wide) basin formed by an ancient impact; Gale Crater’s distant rim stands 7,500 feet tall (2.3 kilometers), and is visible on the horizon about 18 to 25 miles away (30 to 40 kilometers).
The Curiosity mission is led by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is managed by Caltech in Pasadena, California.

Hurricanes inform design of coastal home in Puerto Rico by Fuster + Architects
White concrete walls and chimneys feature in this seaside residence that was designed by Fuster + Architects to be able to endure tropical storms.
Casa Flores is located in a suburban area in Naguabo, a fishing town along the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico. The weekend dwelling sits on a grassy knoll that slopes down toward the Caribbean Sea.
Casa Flores sits atop a grassy knoll
Fuster + Architects, which is based in San Juan, had several guiding concerns for the project.
For starters, the house needed to be able to withstand tropical storms, particularly given the devastation that Hurricane Maria brought to the area in 2017. Casa Flores is actually located near the point where the deadly hurricane made landfall in Puerto Rico.
White chimney skylights provide ventilation
The architects also aimed to create an energy-efficient dwelling that offered a strong visual connection to the ocean.
In response, the firm conceived an austere, single-level home that is slightly sunk into the ground. Rising up from a flat roof are eight "hot air chimneys" that provide natural light and ventilation.
The house is built to withstand hurricanes
The protruding volumes, which double as skylights, are arranged so their openings face away from prevailing winds. This creates a "suctioning effect that continuously circulates air, while illuminating the interior spaces", the firm said.
Rectangular in plan, the all-white house features a frontal facade that appears opaque from the street. The dwelling opens up in the rear, where large stretches of glass provide sweeping views of the sea.
The back of the house has views of the Caribbean Sea
To help protect the home from storm damage, apertures are covered with exterior shades made of a canvas-like material that is hurricane resistant.
The sturdy shades allow daylight to pass into the residence, and their light colour enables them to blend with the home's white facades.
Canvas hurricane shutters are part of the design
Hurricane shutters are typically an unwelcome building accessory, the firm said. In this case, however, they serve as "an integral part of the main architectural expression".
"In some way when they are closed, they resemble the work of the artist Christo in the manner that they completely enclose and define spaces and forms," the architects said.
The house is designed to stay cool in hot weather
To construct the house, the team used an insulated concrete system with a high R-value, which helps ensure the building stays cool inside. Walls are sheathed in a "structural mortar" that provides further insulation.
"In the tropical environment of Puerto Rico, most concrete structures are not insulated and therefore allow the extreme heat to pass through," the firm said.
"The floor of the house, finished in polished exposed concrete, is the only structural element without insulation since is not needed in this climate."
A triangular pool is sunk into the terrace
Encompassing 270 square meters, the house contains a master suite, two bedrooms, and an open-plan cooking, dining and living area. Interior spaces appear to have an aesthetic that matches the home's exterior.
East-facing rooms flow onto a covered terrace that is supported by slender steel columns. Beyond the terrace is a wooden deck lined with a slatted railing.
The pool has ocean views
Built into a triangular corner of the deck is a small pool that connects the home's interior to "the long views to the horizon and the ocean".
"The house's compact layout feels spacious in part because it opens up to a terrace that celebrates outdoor living, and links the house to the exterior," the team said.
The hurricane shutters pull back to open the sheltered porch
Totalling 9,100 square kilometres, the US territory of Puerto Rico is known for its mountains, beaches and tropical forests.
Recent projects there include the transformation of a hurricane-ravaged, century-old residence into a luxury holiday home designed by the New York studio Champalimaud.
Photography is by Jaime Navarro.
