Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez (1959-2021): The Mexican Astrobiologist Who Shaped Our Understanding of The Planet Mars
Tumblr media
Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez was a talented and internationally recognized chemist and astrobiologist who worked at NASA. Navarro-Gonzalez is known for his work with other researchers to study the planet Mars. He made fundamental contributions to several fields related to Astrobiology, the origin of life, and life in extreme environments. Among his many accomplishments, he helped lead the team that identified ancient organic compounds on Mars. He was a Co-I on the SAM instrument onboard NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory and on the HABIT instrument onboard ESA’s ExoMars mission. He was also on the Curiosity Mars rover team. His research blended laboratory simulations, fieldwork, and theoretical modeling in transdisciplines in chemistry, physics, and biology. This sort of dominance is unusual and requires a dynamic and intellectual curiosity beyond normal boundaries. He identified the role of volcanic lightning in the origin of life on Earth. He has established one of the very best laboratories in Latin-America.
He has published 137 papers, 4 edited books and over 225 abstracts. Among the most significant contributions are those that deal the detection of organics in Mars-like environments from cold (Antarctica), temperate (Atacama) and hot (Mojave and Libya) deserts on Earth.
Navarro-Gonzalez was born in Mexico City on April 25, 1959. He earned a bachelor’s in biology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) where he became full professor in 2002, and a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Navarro-González established the Laboratory of Plasma Chemistry and Planetary Studies of the Institute of Nuclear Science at UNAM.
Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez was the first recipient of the Molina fellowship award. This prize recognizes outstanding scientific achievement. He was also the recipient of the 2009 Alexander von Humboldt Medal and the World Academy of Sciences Award in Earth Sciences.
He died on Jan. 28, 2021 due to Covid-19-related complications.
In honor of his service, NASA named a mountain on Mars after him. The mountain stretches 450 feet (120 meters) tall, “Rafael Navarro Mountain” is located on Mount Sharp in northwest Gale Crater.

Rafael Navarro Mountain
“Rafael was a good friend and dedicated scientist, and it has been a privilege and honor for our Mars exploration team to work with him over the years" said the principal investigator of Curiosity’s SAM experiment.
“We are truly honored to have a prominent hill named after our dad; it’s his and our dream come true to see this happen,” wrote Navarro-González’s children, Rafael and Karina Navarro Aceves, in a statement to NASA.
“Our dad was an accomplished scientist, but above all, a great human being who managed to balance work and family."

BOTERO Colombia, Canada, France, China, Italy, U.S., Monaco, 2018 Director: Don Millar
Festival Summary: His style is instantly recognizable, his art greatly sought after, and his vision admired all over the world: Colombian legend Fernando Botero is, without a doubt, one of the greatest living artists today. In Botero, director Don Millar offers a poetic chronicle of the painter's life and art. Shot in 10 different cities all over the world, the film digs deep into Botero's roots to follow his ascent to the pinnacle of the art world, where he has secured himself a permanent position.

NASA’s Insight Lander: What can Mars teach us about our planet? | News
After a six-month area cruise, NASA’s newest Mars mission is about to reach on the Pink Planet on Monday with a single purpose: discover its deep insides.
InSight Lander – the Inside Exploration utilizing Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Warmth Transport – is the US area company’s first craft devoted to look beneath Mars’ floor and examine its inside.
Its touchdown, at round 20:00 GMT, will make it the primary US robotic to go to the planet since Curiosity in 2012.
However that is removed from a straightforward feat – of the 44 missions despatched to Mars, solely 18 have been profitable.
Here is every part you must know concerning the spacecraft, its touchdown and the data it has got down to collect.
What’s InSight Lander?
NASA describes InSight Lander as the primary outer area robotic explorer designed to offer the billions-years-old Mars a “thorough checkup” by learning its crust, mantle and core.
However there are massive challenges earlier than that is achieved – together with the “seven minutes of terror”.
With the intention to land, the spacecraft will enter the Martian ambiance at supersonic pace (nearly 17 occasions the pace of sound), then hit the brakes to attain a mushy touchdown on the planet’s crimson plains, in a area known as Elysium Planitia that has been chosen for its geographical flatness.
“As in all missions to Mars, the problem is to get the module to function its devices and to land into the ambiance accurately,” says Rafael Navarro-Gonzalez, a member of the Curiosity mission and a researcher on the Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Nationwide Autonomous College of Mexico (UNAM).
NASA engineers take into account the agonising seven-minute interval between entry, descent and touchdown the riskiest sequence in your entire mission.
It might take as much as about 20 minutes for the spacecraft’s alerts to succeed in Earth, leaving mission planners ready with bated breath to seek out out about if every part went in accordance with plan. Unable to intervene, they depend on an ideal symphony of pre-programmed duties, robotic units and managed explosions.
As soon as InSight efficiently lands – if it survives the perilous entry – it should be correctly aligned with the solar to maintain producing energy and charging its batteries.
“When utilizing photo voltaic power, it is necessary that the rover correctly poses on the floor and that there usually are not massive sandstorms that clog the photo voltaic panels,” Navarro-Gonzalez informed Al Jazeera.
NASA will do a reside broadcast of the touchdown try on this hyperlink. The printed will start at 19:00 GMT on Monday.
What sort of info will InSight collect?
NASA says the mission will measure what it describes as Mars’ “very important indicators”: its pulse (seismology), temperature (warmth move) and reflexes (precision monitoring).
The lander’s major devices embody a seismometer to trace quakes and a thermometer to measure the planet’s inside temperature by “drilling” itself 5 meters deep into the Martian floor.
These devices – offered respectively by the French and German area companies – have a novel technique of deployment: after touchdown, the craft will use a robotic arm to position them removed from it to keep away from any air pollution of knowledge.
One other instrument, a radio transmitter, will use the Doppler impact – a rise or lower within the frequency of sound or mild – to measure the “wobble” of the planet’s rotation axis.
Jose Antonio Rodriguez Manfredi, a scientist on the InSight mission, informed Al Jazeera that these devices will enable NASA to file the planet’s “seismic exercise, the actions of the crust brought on by meteoric impacts, the warmth move and bodily properties of the terrain, and the variations that the planet might expertise in its rotation interval, every day, and in its translation across the solar”.
He added that different devices will register wind and temperature patterns, in addition to variations within the atmospheric strain and magnetic subject.
NASA’s Perception Mission [Alia Chughtai/Al Jazeera]
What is the purpose of gathering this info?
In response to NASA, there was a time when the Earth and Mars have been heat, moist and shrouded in thick atmospheres.
Nevertheless, three or 4 billion years in the past, one thing modified inflicting these “sibling” planets to take completely different paths.
By learning Mars at its core, InSight goals to return in time and shed mild into what elements resulted in producing an Earth energetic and a desolated Mars.
“The knowledge collected will assist us to know the evolution of rocky planets inside and outdoors our photo voltaic system,” Navarro-Gonzalez says, including that the gathered date will assist open a window into understanding life.
“Rocky planets like ours are important for the emergence and evolution of life as we all know it.
“Our purpose is to discover a second genesis of life, and we consider that Mars is the [place] the place we are able to discover it. On this method, we might revolutionise the biology from terrestrial to common,” Navarro-Gonzalez provides.
How is that this related to individuals on Earth?
Manfredi says one of these missions don’t solely contribute within the larger data of the universe and life but additionally lead to enhancing individuals’s on a regular basis lives right here on Earth.
“New supplies and new applied sciences are continually popping out of one of these tasks that are later utilized in our every day life: cellphones, the supplies with which the our bodies of automobiles or helmets at the moment are constructed, medical advances which are examined within the Station Worldwide Area, amongst others,” he says.
Manfredi provides that these missions additionally form humanity’s relationship with the universe, predicting that “it won’t be lengthy till we are able to see a human crew roaming” the Pink Planet’s floor.
“Mars nonetheless has many surprises to unveil,” Manfredi says.
“Sooner or later, missions – akin to Nasa’s subsequent M2020 mission – will purpose to deliver samples again to Earth that may deepen our data of the inside of the planet.
In 2020, three exploration autos from the US, Europe and China are already scheduled to aim to land on Mars.
SpaceX, a non-public area company, has additionally hinted at a possible cargo mission to Mars in 2022 with the intention of paving a path for future manned missions.
“I consider that the human presence in area will proceed to develop within the 21st century, and the following century,” says Miguel Alcubierre, a researcher on the Institute of Nuclear Sciences within the UNAM.
“And little by little, we’ll increase via the photo voltaic system, maybe reaching the following 22nd century to the moons of Jupiter and Saturn,” he provides.
“Our enlargement by the photo voltaic system is inevitable in the long run and a pure consequence of our technological improvement and our curiosity.
“If in 500 years we have now not colonised your entire photo voltaic system, I feel it could be very miserable and would point out that one thing catastrophic occurred that stopped us.”

💙 - Are there any muses you’ve been considering trying out?
Meet Zara Cecelia Navarro. She’s a 28 year old surgical resident. Her father passed away when she was five, she has an much older brother via that father’s side. So once their father passed, her mother couldn’t really care less for that brother. But Zara? Oh, Zara was the daughter she always wanted, and more then that? She was destined to be a beauty queen. What her mother hadn’t expected was just how little Zara cared for such. Growing up, she was nothing short of intelligent. Always bringing home A’s, her GPA 4.0. Her mother wanted to bank on the beautiful child, but her child? She wanted to use her brain. When she told her mother, and her step father; which her mother does end up marrying into money, that she was going to go to school to be a surgeon, they laughed in her face. Yet, she went on her way, so far proving them wrong. She does her best to not really involve herself with her mother and step dad, but her brother? That’s her rock. Unfortunately for her, he’s the furthest thing from a clean civilian.

Meet Rafael J. Moreno. He’s a 43 years old sergeant, PD. His mother was a Cuban Immigrant, who came to the US for a better life. She ends up working under a wealthy family, and this would be how Rafael is conceived. Between an affair that involved his mother, and the head of that household. Once she had fallen pregnant, she was shunned from that family. Leaving her and her son to fend for themselves. It was hard, but Sofia Moreno did it. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her son. Tragically, she is killed, when Rafael was simply 10 years old. In what could only be explained as a hate crime. This would cause the young boy to bounce around the foster care system until he was of age, in which he’d go on to enlist in the military. Eventually transferring into law enforcement after a few years of service. For him, law enforcement was a much better fit, and it definitely was. Climbing his way up the leader. He does meets a woman, gets married, and they have a little girl, in which they’d go on to name Sofia after his mother. The way the job takes over majority of his life, him and his wife’s marriage does fall apart. Therefore, they end up divorcing, causing him to only see his child Friday night until Monday morning, in which he drops her off at school, and his ex-wife picks her up.

Catalan secession threatens Spain's golden age for sports

Catalan secession threatens Spain's golden age for sports
Catalonia’s audacious attempt to secede from the rest of Spain represents a threat to one of the world’s sporting powers.
For more than a decade, Spain has punched above its demographic weight in sports. The Mediterranean country of 42 million citizens has produced stars in sports ranging from its most beloved football, to tennis, basketball, racing, golf, and even water sports.
But if Catalonia manages to overcome stiff opposition from Spanish authorities to secede, Spain and an independent Catalonia would suffer on the pitch, parquet, and pool.
Catalonia’s regional parliament, where separatists hold a slim majority on less than 50 percent of the popular vote, voted in favor of a declaration of independence on Friday. Spain’s central government acted swiftly to exercise extraordinary powers to fire Catalonia’s government and dismiss its parliament. Catalonia’s president responded that he wasn’t stepping down and called for a massive public protest.
In the hypothetic case of Catalonia establishing its own state, Spanish sports would retain tennis’ Rafael Nadal and Garbine Muguruza, Formula One driver Fernando Alonso, golfer Sergio Garcia, badminton Olympic champion Carolina Marin, and world champion figure skater Javier Fernandez, plus a slew of coveted soccer players.
But it would also lose an important number of talents if a frontier went up around northeastern Catalonia.
A core of footballers for Barcelona and Spain, the pillars of the successful national basketball team, and several Olympic gold medalists all hail from Catalonia.
Nadal, who is from Mallorca and speaks the island’s dialect of the Catalan language, said recently that “I can’t see Spain without Catalonia.”
“I have said many times that I feel very close to Catalonia. I feel Spanish, of course, and I understand that Catalonia is a part of Spain,” he said. “I understand that we are better and stronger together than separated.”
Here are the key issues at stake for Spanish sports:
NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM
Catalans have played a key part in establishing Spain as one of the best national teams. The team has qualified for the World Cup in Russia relying on defender Gerard Pique, holding midfielder Sergio Busquets, and left back Jordi Alba.
Pique and Busquets helped Spain to its greatest triumph at the 2010 World Cup, where they helped beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the final alongside fellow Catalans Xavi Hernandez, Carles Puyol, Joan Capdevila, and Cesc Fabregas.
Catalonia does have a regional team that plays the odd friendly, usually during the winter break by Spanish club football. On its own, it would be fortunate to qualify for major tournaments, instead of winning them.
BARCELONA & LA LIGA
The most alarming cost, when it comes to sports, for many Catalans on both sides of the secession debate would be the harm done to the wildly popular Barcelona soccer club.
The Spanish government and Spanish league have repeatedly warned that Barcelona and Catalonia’s other clubs, including topflight sides Espanyol and Girona, would not be allowed to remain in Spanish competitions in the case of secession.
Expulsion from La Liga would put an end to one of sports’ greatest rivalries, the at least twice annual clasicos between Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The loss of income from TV and the huge drop off in quality of competition, not to mention access to the Champions League, would put Barcelona in peril of plummeting from its position of one of the world’s richest sports clubs.
And it is hard to imagine that Lionel Messi would keep his pledge to finish the best years of his career at Camp Nou if he is limited to testing his skills against a tiny Catalan league.
Spain allows teams from itty bitty Andorra to play in its competitions, but for Catalonia to get a similar deal it would need the good will of Spanish authorities to change the law. That seems very unlikely given the level of acrimony between Barcelona and Madrid.
BASKETBALL
Led by Catalans Pau and Marc Gasol and guards Ricky Rubio and Juan Carlos Navarro, Spain established itself as the next-best basketball power to the United States.
A young Pau Gasol led it to the 2006 World Cup. It lost hard-fought Olympic finals to the U.S. in 2008 and 2012, and it has won three European championships in the last nine years.
OLYMPICS
The star of Spain when it comes to the Olympics is swimmer Mireia Belmonte.
She has delivered four medals in the last two Summer Games, including a gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly in 2016. That made her one of three Catalans who contributed to Spain’s haul of seven gold medals in Rio.
TORN BY POLITICS
Secession has put Catalonia’s athletes under pressure to declare their allegiance.
Pique has become a divisive figure in Spanish football. Some Spain fans jeer him during Spain matches because of his outspoken defense of Catalonia.
Pique has strongly supported what many Catalans, including some who want to remain in Spain, claim as their right to self-determination. Pique voted in an illegal referendum on secession on Oct. 1, although he has not said he wants a free Catalonia and has insisted on his commitment to the national team.
The Gasol brothers have likewise voiced their support for Catalonia voting on reconsidering, or reaffirming, its place within Spain, without either expressing a desire for secession. Pau Gasol acted as a leading spokesman for Madrid’s failed Olympic bid for 2020.
Former Barcelona player and manager Pep Guardiola has gone much further and become a leading proponent of Catalan independence.
Belmonte, however, has said that when asked about the prickly issue she “always say(s) Catalonia is a part of Spain.”
MotoGP champion Marc Marquez and taekwondo gold medalist Joel Gonzalez have said that like many people in Catalonia they are perfectly content with the dual identity of being Catalan and Spanish.
Kayak gold medalist Saul Craviotto is in the unique position of being a top athlete as well as an officer in Spain’s National Police stationed in his hometown of Lleida in northeastern Catalonia.
After Catalonia’s parliament declared independence on Friday, Craviotto said he felt forced to speak out on the political crisis.
“I am a member of the National Police, with my entire family in Lleida, and I feel proud to be Catalan and Spanish,” he wrote on Twitter. “I only ask that everything return to its normal course as soon as possible because with this senselessness we are going adrift.”

Mexican legend Robert Manzanarez will headline Friday's 'LA Fight Club'
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
By Anthony "Stacks" Saldaña
February 15, 2017
LOS ANGELES - This Friday night former WBC International Youth Lightweight Champion and Mexican Superstar Robert “Tito” Manzanarez (33-1, 27 KO’s) will make his United States and Golden Boy Promotions' debut at the "LA Fight Club" in downtown Los Angeles. Manzanarez will headline the main event against Mexican veteran Gamaliel Diaz (40-15-3, 19 KO’s).
Manzanarez, who is an unknown fighter to many boxing fans in the U.S, is a 22-year-old knockout artist who has won twelve fights in a row including nine by KO. Friday, Manzanarez hopes to keep his winning streak alive and will look to display his skills and knockout power against Diaz. Diaz, as many know, is warrior who has been in the ring with Robert Guerrero, Jorge Linares, Tevin Farmer, Takashi Miura, Humberto Soto and Anthony Corolla just to name a few. Fight fans should expect a war as Diaz will definitely be looking to ruin the Golden Boy coming out party for Manzanarez.
In the co-main event undefeated super featherweight Golden Boy prospect Genaro “El Conde” Gamez (3-0, 3 KO’s) from San Diego, California, will look to keep his winning streak alive against the always tough Alejandro Ochoa (7-12-2, 1 KO) from Bell Gardens, California. When people see a an undefeated fighter going up against a fighter with twelve loses on his record, they usually come to a quick conclusion that the fight will be a mismatch, but that will not be the case Friday night. Ochoa, who has twelve losses, is one of the toughest fighters around. His last eleven opponents, which include John Quigley, Daniel “Twitch” Franco, Christian “Chimpa” Gonzalez and Ivan “Striker” Delgado, had a combined record of (69-0) when Ochoa faced them. In October of 2015, Golden Boy matched up Ochoa against the then undefeated Kevin Rivers and Ochoa shocked the sold out crowd at the StubHub Center as he walked way with a majority decision victory. The undefeated Gamez had a solid amateur career and was Gold medal winner at the 2014 U.S. Boxing Nationals, as well being the number one ranked fighter in the nation. Now, Gamez must step-up to the big leagues as he takes on the upset minded Ochoa.
Also on the card and making his professional debut is five-time National Champion and Marquette University graduate, Luis Feliciano. Growing up on the tough streets of northeast Milwaukee, boxing was an outlet that kept Feliciano out of trouble. As an amateur, Feliciano fought out of the United Community Center Gym in Milwaukee and was the 2015 U.S. elite men’s national champion. He also was a two-time Ringside national champion and won titles in the Police Athletic League (PAL), and Under-19 national tournaments. He competed in the 2012 and 2016 Olympic trials and represented the United States at the 2015 Pan American Games. Feliciano, who is managed by Rafael Heredia and trained by Ben Lira, has been in Big Bear for his camp. During camp, Feliciano has sparred with the likes of Denis Safikov, Ryan “Blue Chip” Martin, and Maurice Booker. Feliciano will take on Angel Rodriguez (5-7-3, 4 KO’s) from Houston, Texas on Friday. Rodriguez is a solid puncher and an aggressive come forward fighter who recently fought on the February 3 "LA Fight Club" card where he lost a decision to Jonathan Navarro.
"I’m very excited to make my pro debut. This is something I’ve dreamed about since I was a little kid. I’ve waited for this all my life. Now it’s time to show the world what I have."  -- Luis Feliciano
Also making his debut is Francisco Javier Martinez from Dallas, Texas. Martinez, who had a stellar amateur career, will take on Miguel Angel Barajas Moreno (2-1, 1 KO) from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.
Other fights on the card Friday include Tenochititlan “T-Dog” Nava (4-0, 1 KO) from Los Angeles, California vs Thomas Smith (3-3, 2 KO’s) from Dallas, Texas in a four-round super featherweight bout, and super featherweight Jousce Gonzalez (3-0, 3 KO’s) from Glendora, California takes on Emmanuel Valadez, (3-2, 3 KO’s) from Sonora, Mexico.
