I am low-key obsessed with how the characters are voiced in TAG, particularly the fact they are doubled up. It still amazes me that the two characters come out of the same mouth.
This clip is a great example - scroll to 4:00 to see Rasmus doing a conversation between Scott and Alan - I particularly love how his facial expression changes depending on which voice he’s using 🥰

The Year of the Diesel Army Day 31
Tumblr media
This is my first (and hopefully only) one-year project (which will be only 365 days) and this one has everything to do with the Diesel Army.
In this pic, Philip holds a chocolate-flavored birthday cake and a flag with the number 38.
(NOTE: This is for the 38th birthday of Rasmus Hardiker, Philip's voice actor in both the US and UK dubs of "Thomas and Friends".)
Made with Ibis Paint X.
Enjoy, and remember, Diesel Army Forever!

Concept on the idea of Gemini as a human. A chipper fellow who is P's companion.
Basically an older brother figure / chaperone.
(Haven't worked out how this setting is supposed to work out, just rolling with the vibes here.)
The idea was either to draw human Gemini or have a smaller cricket automaton standing upright, with 4 arms to quadruple wield, wings to help P glide, and flashlight eyes to help see in the dark. (Which admittedly, is also a really cool sidekick idea, but i felt like drawing him as human this time.)
Wears a green coat with (brown) striped pants. (I hope this fashion combo makes some sort of sense. Either that or something more accurate to that time period, more research needed but I may not have enough time for it, so decided to get these doodles out first.)
Tumblr media
He may love to joke and share random stuff from time to time, but he was also once the companion of the legendary stalker. (Got some real skill.)
(Cricket mask design w/ goggles on the eye part.)
Tumblr media
Maybe remembers that he once turned away Carlo, now feels guilty? and has made up his mind to be a companion / be there for P.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that scene on the tram.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Has long legs, good at leaping. (P runs at front, because he's more durable, Gemini behind for support.)
also good at dealing devastating kicks.
(Wears leg armour.)
Tumblr media
When in need of fast retreat, P picks him up and runs.
(I love this doodle.)
Headcanon that he helps P with regular enemies and human bosses, while P and specter team up for puppet and monster boss fights, which can be too dangerous for regular humans to handle.

There's a really interesting line by Gemini that is being interpreted, it's during the alchemist tower climb before the manus fight where he says:
"Did you feel that? It's like someone walked across my grave."
Gemini mentioning his physical "grave" piqued a lot of interest for some, while others think that the line is an expression only. I wanted to check what the korean text was to see if the grave mention still exists (because then we might assume that the grave mention is an idiom since it appeared from conveying the meaning of the text, right?)
It doesn't really prove anything, but it's an interesting thought experiment or whatever. Here is the quote in korean:
Tumblr media
Gemini's line read in the english version by Rasmus Hardiker:
Did you feel that? It's like someone walked across my grave. I sense Ergo everywhere. I mean, this place is saturated with it... like what you'd expect from a mountain of dead puppets.
The subtitle lines I found from a korean playthrough, with a translation:
느꼈어? 여기 오싹한데... Feel that? It's creepy here... 수많은 에르고들이 느껴져. 마치 시체의 산처럼 가득…. I feel so many ergos. Like a mountain of corpses…
I don't know if a similar expression (walked over my grave, as in a paranormal chill or feeling that is said to be a premonition of walking over ones own future grave in english-language folklore?) exists in korean. [Also, Gemini saying "dead bodies" instead of "dead puppets"!]
btw, I think it's more than valid if people think that the korean version doesn't matter at all, since the official language is english, and the devs still chose to include the grave line in one way or another. I thought I'd share for what it's worth, take it for what you will.

Furyne's Voice claims (Multilingual. Yes, italian included)
So, we all know Furyne's gender is never specified in skylanders, and not even in academy, right?
Well this is where this post comes in on who would they be voiced by if they ever were in the cartoon! (not the games of course because they speak in meows so their voice is stock cat sfx)
English - Rasmus Hardiker [Count Duckula] (tell me all you want, but this is a very fitting voice.)
youtube
Latin American Spanish - Melissa Gedeón [Demencia] (Because, you know, energetic voice and all? plus it makes sense for the meows to be high pitched.)
youtube
French - Emmanuel Garijo [Kaeloo] (idk i thought it was fitting. Plus Kaeloo is a good show to learn french)
youtube
European Spanish - Eba Ojanguren [Keroro] (9:12)
youtube
Italian - Renato Novara [Sonic] (Think about it you got this bad cast and then renato walks in the room. No offense to Kaos and Glumshanks' italian vas though. but they're such UNFITTING voices for them)
youtube
Japanese - Junko Takeuchi [Enduo Kanon] (1:01) (once again, energetic voice. also she voiced Kuromi. so, also fitting.)
youtube
aaaaand thats it for now, i got nothing. ok back to work on d.d byeeeeeeee

Archivists on the Issues: Sophisticated Bureaucracies, Archives, and Fictional Depictions [part 2]
Continued from part 1
Archivists on the Issues is a forum for archivists to discuss the issues we are facing today. Today’s post is by Burkely Hermann (me), Metadata Librarian for National Security Archive and current I&A Blog Coordinator. There are spoilers for each of the books, animated series, films, and other media he will be discussing. It was originally published on the Issues and Advocacy blog on Jan. 3, 2023. Also posted on my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog on Feb. 13, 2022.

While bureaucracies are famously criticized in novels like Catch-22 and The Trial, they are a major part of other media, like the acclaimed animated series, Futurama. In the series, Hermes Conrad (voiced by Phil LaMarr), is a bureaucrat who works for the Central Bureaucracy, which manages legal, financial, and business matters in the city of New New York. In one episode, "Lethal Inspection", a physical file archive is shown, with Hermes taking a folder out of a file cabinet. It is later revealed that he was the inspector who approved a defective robot named Bender (voiced by John DiMaggio), after be burns the file.
Brad Houston, a Document Services Manager for the city of Milwaukee, said the physical file archive is really a records center because it has semi-active records. He described how the Milwaukee records center works, noting the importance of filling out transfer forms correctly, pointing out that records are organized by box with specific assigned numbers, and importance of records management training. As another archivist put it, information and records management is as much about understanding bureaucratic processes and human behavior as it is about the records and information.
While there are many other examples of fictional bureaucracies, [10] one specifically comes to mind: the Elven bureauacracy in the children's adventure and supernatural comedy-drama animated series, Hilda. An elf named Alfur (voiced by Rasmus Hardiker) is a series protagonist. Like the other elves in the series, they can only be seen if their tiny paperwork is signed and filled out. In the first episode, the protagonist, Hilda (voiced by Bella Ramsey), tries to come to peace with the elves, who see her as a menace because she stepped through their houses for years without realizing it. In the process, she goes through various Elven political officials who declare there is nothing that can be done and that the matter is out of their hands.
As the series continues, Alfur becomes a correspondent in the city of Trolberg, and files reports about his daily activities in the city, where Hilda is now living. Characters such as Frida (voiced by Ameerah Falzon-Ojo) and Deputy Gerda (voiced by Lucy Montgomery) are shown to care about paperwork as much as him, as does the witchy librarian named Kaisa (voiced by Kaisa Hammarlund). In other episodes, Alfur proudly tells a legendary Elf story about a fight over a real estate contract, he meets a society which doesn't use paperwork, and emphasizes the importance of reading the fine print. The series also features elf-mail, known as "email", which is sent from the countryside into the city with various couriers. Alfur later states that elves pride themselves on the accuracy of historical records and says he is impressed by how Hilda uses loopholes. In the next to last episode of the show's second season, Alfur convinces an elf sent as his replacement to write an eyewitness confirmation form, confirming that his reports from Trolberg, said to be "the most requested from the official archive", are accurate and true.
Hilda, emphasizes importance of accountability within hierarchies more than fictional bureaucracies shown in The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Futurama. Alfur is graded on a performance management system and experiences some level of bureaucratic accountability. The latter is achieved, within institutions, through strategies, administrative rules, budget reviews, and performance management. It can also be accompanied by citizen accountability, which attempts to hold government administrators accountable through forums and laws, using communication technologies to directly access bureaucratic information, monitor government activities, and give feedback on delivery of public services. However, Futurama and Hilda make clear the value of records managers (and archivists) who have developed strategies and experience with relationship-building and negotiating bureaucratic politics.
Many archives, these days, are not "faceless" or "nameless" as those in fiction, nor do they encourage falsification of information to protect individuals. Instead, some likely came into existence during the Progressive Era to "lessen anxiety" about issues such as race. While some bureaucratic records, within archives, may be considered "cold", there have been efforts to humanize the files, especially those about human atrocities. Even so, some archivists remain impatient with "inanities" of bureaucracies they are part of. [11]
Bureaucracy remains part and parcel of archives. There have been efforts, in recent years, to reduce bureaucracies said to be "overlapping" and related claims that government by bureaucracy is dead or no longer necessary. Despite this, committing information to paper, then managing, or shuffling, that paper within a bureaucracy remains a "source of an essential power." After all, records have the power to legitimize bureaucracy, while promoting political hegemony and constructing social memory. In fact, in the 1985 film, Brazil, a controlling bureaucracy rules people's lives and crushes spirits. [12] The film's protagonist, Sam Lowry, has been described by some as an archivist who has "dreamlike moments" and sees himself as a winged superhero. He tries to tamper with data in order to save the woman he loves before his vision is shown to be an illusion.
While there won't be any "bureaucratic cock-ups" or Vogan Constructor Fleets demolishing Earth to make way for a hyperspace expressway, [13] sophisticated and complex bureaucracy will remain an integral part of archives, whether we like it or not.

2024 Reading Log
My reading goals can be found on my pinned post. Here, I will be keeping track of and sharing my thoughts about the books I read. Obviously, this post is a WIP and will be added to whenever I finish a book. Feel free to ask me for more in-depth reviews of these books and I'll gladly write them! And, feel free to send me recommendations of things to read based on the books I've enjoyed!
Hilda and the Hidden People (narrated by Carlyss Peer, Bella Ramsey, Sanchia McCormack, Ako Mitchell, Rasmus Hardiker, Wes Venn, Rob Rackstraw, Simon Greenall, David Menkin, John Hopkins, Kaisa Hammarlund)
Started: 5th February 2023 Finished: 22nd February 2024 Listening time: 1h 44m Rating: 3/5 Thoughts in three sentences: Listening to this was a really relaxing time, and I have decided to try to make it a habit to read/listen to children's literature at bedtime to help me unwind (plus, as an aspiring children's author, it'll definitely help me with my writing goals). I haven't seen the Hilda Netflix series but this was still very accessible and immersive, and quite a fun read, too (I will be listening to more Hilda books and will likely start watching the animated series at some point this year)! Overall, this was a light, relaxing read with great voice acting and a lot of heart and humour, and I can't wait to venture further into the Hildaverse!
