Fallout 4: Where is the Lone Wanderer?*
*a vague conspiracy theory which doesn’t actually answer the question at hand. We all have our own ideas of how the lore should go, and I’m sure yours is very canon-compliant and valid, but this is mine and I have support for it. Looooongpost.
First off: What do we know about the canon Wanderer?
We know they activated Project Purity (or had a companion do it) without the FEV and were inducted into the Brotherhood. We know they’ve met with MacCready (you can’t finish the game if you don’t), and he has dialogue indicating they had further contact. They also took the Brotherhood’s side at Adams Air Force Base.
We don’t know what happened with The Replicated Man, but since the canon Wanderer appears to have good karma, and info from 4 implies Zimmer’s disappearance was more recent than ten years ago, it seems likely they took the boring ending, which secures their membership in the Railroad.
Why aren’t they in Fallout 4?
The Doylist answer is that they’re highly customizable, and so they have no canon appearance, personality, gender, etc. But in-universe? Something happened.
“Accepting outsiders like yourself has proven disastrous in the past.” - Kells
“I've seen other soldiers come and go. Some were brave, some were honest... hell, some were even downright heroic.” - Danse
“Every doctor I've talked to was worthless. [] I don't need them... I need someone like you.” - MacCready
When Duncan first got sick, “someone like you” would have meant the Wanderer. This suggests (to me) that they’re not in the Capital Wasteland anymore. But they’re certainly not in the Commonwealth either.
The weird thing is that the Lone Wanderer is all over this game - they’re the namesake for a male hairstyle, a perk, a DCR song, a motorcycle brand
and the codename of Deacon’s mission to save the Railroad from certain destruction by recruiting the Sole Survivor.
Someday We’ll Find It, the Deacon Connection
Oh yeah, I’m going here. Desdemona’s terminal entries confirm it was always Deacon’s plan to get you onboard and use you to destroy the Institute. There are Railroad lookout posts near 111/Sanctuary and Red Rocket, and of course he followed you in Goodneighbor, Diamond City, and Bunker Hill (at least). His court jester vibe hides it a bit, but he’s manipulating you more than he’s manipulating Desdemona in the intro scene. And do you notice he rarely gives you a firm verbal disapproval unless you’re hurting the Railroad?
What could have caused Deacon’s interest in you, unless he’s made the connection between you and the Lone Wanderer? He’ll vouch for you if you haven’t accomplished anything yet, or even if you’re a Brotherhood member. A Pip-Boyed stranger emerges from a vault in the middle of a crisis, gaining friends, skills, items, and special abilities at a suspicious rate? Probably with the same gender and playstyle as the previous one? Heck, when he first heard the rumors, he probably thought you WERE the Lone Wanderer.
Tumblr media
There are other indications the Railroad has been in contact with them — Desdemona mentions the Capital Wasteland as their primary destination for synths, and Deacon references Harkness’s recall code. If you refuse to pick a codename, Desdemona even assigns you “Wanderer.”
So what happened, then?
I think the answer lies with the Brotherhood, specifically in Deacon’s hatred of them. Sure, ideology is enough to hate them for, but Deacon sure seems suspiciously happy if you nuke their base of operations. (Some of) his comments on that:
“The Brotherhood... well, I met them on an op in Capital Wasteland a few years back. But now with Elder Maxson... Let's just say, not a fan.”
“That bastard Maxson really screwed them up. The Brotherhood used to be the good guys. Well, goodish.”
[Who’s Elder Maxson?] “He’s a piece of work, is what he is.”
And on his time in the Capital:
“Did I ever tell you about the time I was in Capital Wasteland? Now there's a tale.”
“Capital Wasteland. Exports: purified water, some decent tech, oh, and an insane suicidal cult that worships radiation. Thanks, guys.”
“I miss Capital Wasteland. You can actually drink the water there.”
And a few lines I’ve decided (with no evidence) directly refer to LW:
“Last partner I had wound up going... well, a little insane. I think it was all my show tune medleys.”
[After Maxson orders you to hunt Danse down] “See? This is what the Brotherhood's really about.”
And my favorite: “I’ve been looking forward to kicking the Brotherhood’s teeth in. I owe them.” This line comes before Glory is killed, so he’s not referring to that. The Brotherhood only recently arrived in force in the Commonwealth. He’s talking about something that happened in the Capital Wasteland.
So Here’s What Might Have Happened:
In early 2286, Deacon moves to the Capitol Wasteland for awhile, probably to get a face change and lay low for a bit. He contacts the Lone Wanderer, who has barely heard from the Railroad in nine years. They begin to work together.
Tumblr media
(In context, this journal entry looks like he’s somehow gathering intel to predict when Vault 111 will open, but I can’t think of a way for him to get that information or know why it’s important, so I’m not going to believe it just yet.)
The Wanderer is still a knight, maybe a paladin. Maxson has been elder for 2-3 years and is monitoring the Institute. Meanwhile, the Lone Wanderer and Deacon are setting up infrastructure to receive escaped synths.
And then the Brotherhood finds out about one of the safehouses. With their limited understanding, they believe that the Institute is holed up there and attack. The Wanderer intentionally throws the mission — maybe disobeys orders, maybe downs a vertibird or collapses a subway tunnel, or maybe even attacks their brothers to protect the synths.
And, well-
Tumblr media
Either they were killed, or they escaped court martial and execution by a hair’s breadth and fled the Capital, leaving Deacon to believe Maxson had them killed.
There you have it. That’s why they aren’t in Brotherhood dialogue or records. Their accomplishments couldn’t be recognized because they’re a traitor. And that’s why it’s personal for Deacon.

Blackbird pilot recalls the mission where a Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat fired a missile at his SR-71
Soviet MiG-25 pilot tells why Foxbats were not able to fire a single missile at SR-71 Blackbird Mach 3 spy planes
The Soviet MiG-25
The “holy grail” of the soviet air defense system: shooting down a Blackbird
Missile fired at an SR-71
MiG-25 at risk of being shot down by its missile
What happened to the missile fired by the MiG-25 at the SR-71?
The Soviet MiG-25
The Soviet MiG-25 (NATO code-name “Foxbat”) was a high-speed interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft. The aircraft entered service in 1970 and has a top speed of Mach 2.83, powerful radar, and could carry up to four air-to-air missiles.
The MiG-25’s capabilities were not discovered until 1976 when Viktor Belenko, a Soviet MiG-25 pilot, defected to Japan. Subsequent analysis revealed a simple-yet-functional design with vacuum-tube electronics, two massive turbojet engines, and sparing use of advanced materials such as titanium.

CLICK HERE to see The Aviation Geek Club contributor Linda Sheffield’s T-shirt designs! Linda has a personal relationship with the SR-71 because her father Butch Sheffield flew the Blackbird from test flight in 1965 until 1973. Butch’s Granddaughter’s Lisa Burroughs and Susan Miller are graphic designers. They designed most of the merchandise that is for sale on Threadless. A percentage of the profits go to Flight Test Museum at Edwards Air Force Base. This nonprofit charity is personal to the Sheffield family because they are raising money to house SR-71, #955. This was the first Blackbird that Butch Sheffield flew on Oct. 4, 1965.
A capable interceptor, the MiG-25 was widely exported by the Soviet Union. This aircraft could outrun any fighter in the air, and indeed any military aircraft other than the SR-71 Blackbird.
Loaded with two R-40 missiles (NATO reporting name AA-6 ‘Acrid’), the Foxbat could reach 78,000 feet, but with its full complement of four missiles, it was limited to 68,900 feet. By contrast the Habu flew at cruise speeds above Mach 3 at over 80,000 feet.
The “holy grail” of the soviet air defense system: shooting down a Blackbird
Nevertheless, once an SR-71 Blackbird flown by Col. Darrel Cobb was fired on by a MiG-25, as Cobb himself recalls in this interview given to his son Chris;
Col. Cobb’s SR-71 Blackbird fired on by a MiG-25.
‘Operational missions.
‘First let me assure you; we never broke President Eisenhower’s promise to cease overflying the Soviet Union. We remained over international water – 12 mi offshore.
‘All of my operational flying was from Kadena, Okinawa. Area of interest was Vietnam; Korea; Vladivostok, USSR; China. Later, we flew transatlantic & return from Seymour Johnson, NC supporting the Israel Arab war. After I left the program, the SR flew from Mildenhall, England & Bodo, Norway.
‘We already touched on missions against Vietnam & the only night mission.
‘Today let’s cover “north missions.”

This print is available in multiple sizes from AircraftProfilePrints.com – CLICK HERE TO GET YOURS. Dawn at 80.000ft – SR-71 Blackbird
‘Take off, refuel & head into the Sea of Japan; between Japan & south Korea. Accelerated to operational speed – 3.20. Head directly at Vladivostok. headquarters of USSR air defense; and test/r & d of new radar & intercept development. 2200 mph guaranteed to light up all the radar & intercept systems they had.
‘A MiG-25 interceptor squadron was based just outside of Vladivostok. The “holy grail” of the soviet air defense system was to shoot down an SR-71.
‘Turn north up the Sea of Japan & make a U-turn back down the USSR coast (12 mi offshore) with ELINT & SIGINT recorders going full bore. Photo cameras looking oblique into the USSR, updating the interceptor air order of battle. Head south east till past Vladivostok then turn slightly left then right to cross Korea at the DMZ. Photo cameras updating N. Korea force readiness to resume hostilities against S. Korea.
Missile fired at an SR-71
‘Continue down the yellow sea coast of China. All sensors evaluating China’s threat to Taiwan. Turn left- decel & land at Kadena. I flew this profile several times during the 4 years I flew ops missions. One of these got very, very thrilling. Southbound, passing Vladivostok, Reg (my RSO) announced;
‘”We’ve got a fighter locked on – it’s gotta be a MiG-25″
‘”Our DEF [Defensive Electronic Gear, DEF. It Provided ground-to-air and air-to-air missile protection. Still Classified. Def systems were labeled DEF A,B,C,E and G. Later modifications to the DEF Systems resulted in DEF A2, C2, H and M systems. Nearing retirement of the SR-71, a programmable DEF labeled A2C could defeat all known threats to the Blackbirds] is blanketing all beautifully.”
Tumblr media
‘”Oops – he just fired – – we’ve got a missile locked on”
‘”Our def has shifted to its missile magic”
‘”There – lock’s broken. Missile’s back in search”
‘”That’s weird – sounds like the missile’s locked on – but not locked on us”
‘”He’s gone – coming up on the “s” turn to the DMZ.”’
Fast forward to late 1976 Col. Cobb retired from the Air Force.
MiG-25 at risk of being shot down by its missile
Cobb continues;
‘I’m retired! Learning that retirement means no days off; no vacation; no holidays; big pay cut.
‘I find the aircraft TV channel & history channel. Lots & lots of SR-71 films. I avidly watch at every opportunity. In my den, glued to the TV & today’s SR-71 show, & who do I see comparing the MiG-25 with the SR-71??
Tumblr media
‘You’re right – – Lt Victor Belenko!
‘He was totally gobsmacked; his MiG-25 burned up the engines getting to Mach 3 yet the SR’s cruise speed was greater than 3.0.
‘Belenko is the one who said that the Holy Grail of soviet air defense was to shoot down an SR.
‘He told of how they would pre-position ahead of the SR’s radar track and had to zoom up to get a lock on & fire their missile.
‘Belenko stressed how quickly & precisely they had to perform because the window of opportunity was so very short.
‘Their target was traveling at 3600 ft/sec. Faster than a speeding bullet.
‘He described in detail how precise the post firing breakaway had to be executed to avoid getting shot down by their own missile; talking as though they found this out the “hard way.”’
Cobb Concludes;
‘Man talk about intense attention – – I’m quickly mentally replaying that tape from the inter-phone – –
‘”We’ve got a fighter locked on – it’s gotta be a Mig-25″
Tumblr media
‘”Our DEF is blanketing all beautifully.”
‘”Oops – he just fired – – we’ve got a missile locked on”
‘”Our def has shifted to its missile magic”
‘”There – lock’s broken. Missile’s back in search.
‘”That’s weird – sounds like the missile’s locked on – but not locked on us.”’
What happened to the missile fired by the MiG-25 at the SR-71?
What happened to the missile fired by the MiG-25? Could it have locked onto the Foxbat itself? Could the SR-71 DEF have deceived it? We’ll never know.
However, we can assume that given that SR-71 had a cruise speed faster than the top speed of the MiG-25’s Acrid missiles, the Blackbird simply outran the AA-6. There was no chance a Foxbat could conduct a tail-chase interception of an SR-71 (the MiG-25 couldn’t carry out a head-on intercept of a Blackbird too: in fact, the Foxbat’s radar and fire control system was not sophisticated enough to solve the problems of a head-on intercept at closing speeds that would exceed Mach 5).

Sheffield was an SR-71 Reconnaissance Systems Officer) Twitter X Page Habubrats SR-71, Instagram Page SR71Habubrats and Facebook Page Born into the Wilde Blue Yonder Habubrats for awesome Blackbird’s photos and stories.

Over the recent years, the term guofeng ( literally means “national style”) has seen a rising prevalence in Chinese media to describe popular televisions, films, and musics that are considered to embody an essential “Chinese-ness.” While originated from the Chinese classic The Book of Songs, the concept of guofeng nowadays has already become a part of popular culture. National style is often utilized by the state media to emphasize Chinese history and de-emphasize the queer elements in the drama when discussing boys’ love stories. In her analysis of another BL Xianxia drama, Ye identified Word of Honor, with its soft masculinity, as comprising a larger landscape of reconstructed Chinese masculinity that includes more militant depictions, such as the Wolf Warrior films (dir. Wu Jing, 2015 and 2017), and thus being complicit in “brand homonationalism with Chinese characteristics’.”39) In The Untamed, the national style is manifested through two instruments: the historical items with clear cultural fingerprints and the martial arts chivalry extolled in Xianxia stories.
Set in the ancient indeterminate times of China, the cultural elements like Mo’e (old-style headband), Liusu ( decorative silk tassel), Chinese style gardens and architectures, and frequently mentioned Confucian quotes are prevalent throughout the drama. Some of them are savvily deployed by the producers as a hint of boys’ romance. In most Chinese historical dramas, Mo’e is always used by beautiful men with feminine traits, such as the most widely known characters like Jia Baoyu (Figure 1) and Liu Xianglian (Figure 2) in Hong Loumeng (The Red Chamber, 1984). Gradually, this code is fixated with the meaning of beautiful men (and many times, effeminate men) with fair skin, exquisite facial features, slim yet strong body figures, and graceful manner. In The Untamed, when the male protagonist Lan Wangji appears with Mo’e (Figure 3), his configuration would recall people of the early screen visual presentations and to relate the androgynous beauty with the characters. This cult of male beauty distances young men from the traditional masculinity and delivers a non-conforming gender attitude towards conventional hegemonic models. Moreover, this cultural symbol is deliberately encoded with homosexual implications by the screenwriter. In the drama, people of Lan Clan are asked to wear Mo’e to restrict their behavior ever since they are a child. As a sacred symbol, no one can touch it except for their parents, wife, and children. It represents their identity and bears a sense of belonging. Though acutely aware of its significance, when Wei Wuxian is in danger, Lan Wangji still chooses to take it off and ties it to Wei’s wrist with no hesitation. The emphasizing of “Only wife and son can touch it” in the early part of the same episode denotes that when Lan takes off the Mo’e, he already acknowledges and places Wei Wuxian in the position of a “wife.” His action of taking off the Mo’e not only breaks their clan discipline but also functions as a repudiation of social norms.
However, all this more or less overt depiction of boys’ romance is ignored and even recognized by state media because of its application of national style. Its adaptation of ancient oriental elements was even praised by The People’s Daily for its “wonderful presentation  of Chinese characteristics,” and “manifestation of Chinese people’s confidence and pride for our own culture.”40) As a Chinese traditional clothing accessory tied on the forehead and decorated with embroidery or pearl jade, Mo’e originated from the Shang Dynasty (1600 to 1046 B.C.)41) and was used in the military for managing and distinguishing troops, but in its later evolution, both men and women, especially in the rich family wore it as a decoration. When The Untamed gets an unprecedent hit in the overseas market, the Chinese government chooses to exploit its  cultural values to exert its “cultural export” program thus turning blind eyes to its boys’ love content.

As the person I follow who does reverse engineering, do you have any suggestions for finding resources on reverse engineering Android apps?
Specifically, there's an app I'm playing with, where after seeing the structure of the "export as Markdown" output I want to know what the internal structure and representation of the data is. The end goal of understanding it is to be able to add certain kinds of data dynamically, rather than up front. That's certainly doable typing in raw markdown, but being able to do it "app style" would be more convenient.
The google Play Store entry does not mention any open source licenses, or looking for the source code and hopefully a git repo or something would have been my first step.
(I'll probably need to bang together a crappy app to do what I really want regardless, but maybe this app's data structure would be more convenient than doing so with markdown.)
So, android stuff:
First you need the APK. You can do some trickery with your phone to pull it over the ADB connection if you install the android SDK, but generally I just google "app name APK" and you'll find some greymarket site that'll give you a copy.
Secondly, APKs are just ZIP files (JAR files, technically, but JAR files are also just ZIP files!). Unzip them and you can find lots of interesting stuff, often.
Tumblr media
For disassembling/decompiling them, my go-to program is jadx. It's a java decompiler that's been around a while and can natively open APK files and decompile them. There's some weirder new APKs that it can't handle (something to do with a newer bytecode revision, I think?) but I can't recall the details on how you handle those. Those are rare, in my experience. jadx is pretty good, but you'll occasionally find methods or entire classes that it just can't figure out, and it'll give you a bytecode dump. I don't yet have a good solution for those, other than "get good at reading JVM bytecode".
If you're dealing with games, another useful thing can be UABE and dotPeek. These are unity/C# tools, but you would be surprised how many android games (and non-games!) are actually unity under the hood.
Bluestacks can also be useful, because it'll let you run the app on your desktop and that can be handy for things like running WireShark to log all network traffic.
Speaking of logging, the other handy thing I've done is enabling android developer mode on my phone to get to one specific option: Bluetooth HCI snoop log.
Now, actually getting that log is tricky and varies from phone to phone, because for some reason manufacturers like to move it around, but it's one of the best ways to reverse engineer bluetooth communication stuff. You basically turn on the log and everything your phone does to communicate with your Smart Toothbrush or whatever will be logged to a file, then you can yank that file over and stuff it into Wireshark.
So... hopefully some of that is a helpful start? I've not done a huge amount of Android reversing so I'm not super familiar with the tools used, but these are the ones I've got on hand for when I do.
also sorry for all the horny robotgirl posters who saw "android reverse engineering" in the tags and thought this was gonna be about taking them apart with screwdrivers and rooting around in their insides. Not today!

Chapter 21: Mitsuhide POV - Consequences: (Surprise) Gacha Chapter - Mitsuhide’s take on recent events.
All Chapters Archived on Ao3
Logline - With Mai, Hideyoshi, and Aki missing, Mitsuhide and Katsuko reluctantly team up. Disguised as a merchant and his concubine, can they outsmart the man known as the God of Deceit?
“Good morning Master Kyubei.” Sho paused in the middle of preparing tea to bow to him. She turned to her brother, who was stuffing a rice ball into his mouth. “Hiko!”
The boy belatedly jumped to his feet and bowed, mumbling a greeting with his mouth full.
Sho just rolled her eyes then turned back to Mitsuhide. “Is Miss Kaya awake yet?”
“Let my sweet lady love sleep this morning. I kept her awake far too late into the night.” Mitsuhide allowed a somewhat rogueish smile to cross his face, knowing that the maid would blush and ask no more questions – especially not in front of her younger brother. “If I could, I would have wiled the morning away with her too, but sadly, my work calls me now. I will take her shopping later.”
With that, he continued on his way down to the main floor, slid open the doors and lifted the blinds to his import export ‘business.’ The key to establishing an alternative identity was to keep it as complete as possible. The import business that ‘Kyubei’ ran, could, if a curious customer entered the machiya, arrange for that customer to receive any number of lacquer items, from decorative vases to armor. As such, Mitsuhide always had the excuse of needing to conduct ‘honest’ business during the morning hours.
Thankfully, this excuse took him out of the vicinity of Katsuko. Acting the devoted lover in front of the audience of the maid had been entertaining enough when Katsuko had merely been a somewhat rebellious tool – it amused him to watch her grit her teeth, knowing that she could not contradict his teasing when Sho was around. Now that it was becoming less of an act, it made for a dangerous distraction. A distraction he could ill afford.
Thus when the boy clattered down the stairs, with Katsuko following behind at a similar pace, his plan to keep her at a distance was immediately tested. Even simply passing through the room, she was impossible to ignore, especially given her inappropriate attire, with that loose sash dragging on the floor. He was not portraying a man who would let his lover appear to the world in any manner except absolute perfection. "Going somewhere?"
"Only to the entry. Hiko is going to show off his juggling skills, and they're sufficiently random enough for Sho to bar us from the kitchen." She nodded at where the child’s toy came close to upending a display shelf.
He ought to stop her and insist that she at least retie her obi properly. Or, even, perform the task for her. A lingering look, a stray touch
perhaps he might even tease a glare from her.
He was halfway to standing when he recalled his vow – made mere moments ago – to stay away from temptation. "Ah." He returned his attention the ledgers he was updating as the two scurried out of the room.
Should he have more merchandise sent from Azuchi? Over the past week, he’d become aware that certain agents, pretending to be customers, had visited the business. It would make sense to at least move the displays around, add new items, to keep up the charade. But, would the replacement stock get here before the Oda ships arrived to move the operation to the next phase?
Given that he had not yet hit upon the proper
enticement, for lack of a better word
to force Shojumaru into revealing Hideyoshi and Mai’s location (or even, for that matter, concrete proof that he was the man behind their disappearance), it would be prudent to continue to act as a normal merchant. He got out a fresh piece of paper and composed a coded message to Kyubei requesting more “lacquerware and pottery from the local craftsmen.” Kyubei would understand the meaning.
Midway through his correspondence, he became aware of some sort of commotion from outside.
Years from now
 even days from now
he would not be able to recall what he had been thinking or doing in the time between hearing the frantic yells, and the moment Shojumaru strode into the Machiya, carrying an unconscious Katsuko. The moment his gut seized in terror.
While he was still processing the sight of her, motionless, a splash of blood across her face, Shojumaru had transferred her into Mitsuhide’s arms. He hadn’t realized he had opened them to receive her.
“Ox cart. Yer wench got between it and Hiko.” Shojumaru’s normally smooth tones was rough with an unidentifiable emotion. Later, Mitsuhide would sit back and process this transformation, evidence as much as anything else to support Katsuko’s theory that the man was Motonari.
But for now
He pressed his fingers on Katsuko’s neck, relieved that her heart was still beating, strong and true.
“I’m sorry.” The boy stepped forward, head bowed. “If I had been paying attention to the road
she saved me.” He took a deep gulp of air. “Will she be alright?”
Again, the more dispassionate part of Mitsuhide’s brain noted that Shojumaru lightly patted the boy’s shoulder, the look of fatherly concern on his face, and realized that he had been handed another tool against the man. But
 that too
 was for later.
He hugged Katsuko closer and her whimper sent his logic into retreat. She was in pain. Putting aside all distrust of Shojumaru for the time being, and hoping that the man’s affection for Hiko would permit him to render aid, he asked, “Do you know where to find a healer?”
“Yes
” There was hesitation in his tone.
“You’ll be rewarded.”
“Keep yer money.” Shojumaru all but growled it. “I know a healer
 the man has strange notions
and half the time he is swimming in drink. But if you find him sober, there’s not a better physician in the city.”
“I will take the risk.” If necessary, he would sober up the old man with bucket of water poured over his head, then threaten torture if he could not render aid.
Tumblr media
By the time Shojumaru returned with the healer, Mitsuhide and Sho had gotten Katsuko settled in her bed. Sho had helped him wash the blood away. Small actions, really, but it helped keep his worry at bay. The dangling obi sash, which according to the boy had tripped her up after saving him, was banished to the corner of the room. My fault for not insisting she tie it better. For not fixing it myself.
As Shojumaru had warned, the smell of sake clung to the healer, a man much younger than Mitsuhide had expected. Nor did his first words inspire any confidence, for he froze when he saw Katsuko, his skin turning pale. “She's not dead. Oh Gods
 I thought she was dead.”
“I would not have asked for a physician for a dead woman.” Perhaps he should not have spoken so harshly to the healer, but Mitsuhide hoped to pull the man out of his trance.
His words were successful, and the man seemed to shake himself, straighten his posture and hurried over to examine her. “What happened?”
Behind him, Mitsuhide sensed, rather than saw Shojumaru heave a sigh. “She was hit by an oxcart.” From his tone, it sounded like this was information he had already relayed to the healer.
The man carefully knelt next to the futon, and gently ran his hands across her neck. “Yes
but where was she hit? A blow to the side of her head could have damaged her temporal artery risking a brain bleed. Damage to her back or neck could paralyze her.”
Paralyze? He couldn’t imagine a worse fate for someone as normally as active
 as alive
as Katsuko. While the healer continued to list the potential injuries, Mitsuhide sat beside the bed and picked up her hand, squeezing it gently, willing his own strength to flow into her. She stirred, her eyes fluttering for a moment. "Kaya. Open your eyes."
She let out a hiss of pain, and slipped away again.
“Kaya?” The healer seemed startled at her name. He looked from Katsuko to Mitsuhide. “What is she to you?”
With Shojumaru still in the room, there was nothing Mitsuhide could do other than continue his charade. “She is my concubine.”
“Kaya.” Again the healer said her name, hesitantly as if it tasted odd on his tongue. “She isn’t dead.”
One more of those from the man, and Mitsuhide would throw him out the door, healer or not.
Meanwhile, the boy stepped forward. “The cart hit her here.” He gestured to his hip. “She was already falling forward when that happened. She hit her head on the ground.”
Finally, the healer seemed to gather his senses. “Hm, the skull is thicker in front, less likely to fracture – but the blow would jar her.” He looked into her eyes, muttering something about wishing for better light, then grabbed the lantern off the desk and thrust it at Mitsuhide. “Hold this above her face.”
Startled into obeying, Mitsuhide did as directed, watching as the healer opened Katsuko’s eyes one at time. The man relaxed a bit, before saying. “Pupils are normal sized and reactive to light.”
He had no idea what that that meant, but taking in the healer’s now calmer body language, he presumed her injuries were not as bad as initially appeared.
When no one responded to that cryptic statement, the man proceeded to carefully examine Katsuko, lightly running his hands over her limbs, even tapping his knuckles on her joints. “I don’t see any evidence of spinal cord fracture or broken bones, though she will have a few bruises, and a black eye.” He stood up and backed away. “Treatment for a concussion is simply to keep her calm and quiet, wake her up periodically to check on her, and when she begins to recover, avoid strenuous activity for at least a week.”
As medical treatment, it lacked specificity. Where were the potions and salves? He should have sent for Ieyasu, who while likely to be equally as brusque, would surely have had more instructions than that. “And if she is in pain?” If? She was clearly in pain. Even unconscious, there was a tight wrinkle in her brow.
The healer scrubbed his hands through his hair, averting his face from the bed. “Willow bark tea may help with the pain. If you have access to someone with an ice hut, then a cold compress would reduce the swelling at her eye. Music could be soothing, if you can sing. Avoid bright light, loud noises, heavy food and strong smells. Be patient
she might be confused or emotional for a time.”
“Will you return to check on her?” Mitushide was not entirely convinced in the healer’s abilities, but he was all they had right now.
The man backed further away from the bed, glancing down at his stained clothing. “No
I can’t. Not like this.”  With that, he fled from the room.
Only after it was clear the healer had left the building did Shojumaru speak into the silence. “Toshiie is a strange one, but he’s saved many considered too injured to survive.” He bowed to the unconscious Katsuko. “I will find some willow bark.”
Then, he exited as well.
Both Sho and the boy seemed reluctant to abandon Katsuko, and yet unable to contribute any worthwhile aid. Not wanting them underfoot all day, Mitsuhide sent the two of them in search of ice (though at that time of the year, it was unlikely anyone would have any left). While Katsuko slipped into a fitful sleep, he dashed off a quick message to Ieyasu, outlining the situation and the healer’s advice. Perhaps Ieyasu would have additional ideas beyond willow bark and soothing music.
Still

After sending Goro off to Azuchi with the message, he picked up his flute and considered. He couldn’t imagine that music would have healing powers, but

 perhaps she would like it?
And indeed, as he sat by the futon and played softly, Katsuko rolled over, turning toward him and stretched out her hand. It appears the healer was correct after all. He paused a moment, and took her hand again, squeezing it gently. Recalling the instruction to wake her up on occasion, he leaned closer and said in a quiet voice, "Kaya, wake up."
Her eyelashes fluttered and she squinted at him. “Who?"
“Katsuko.” But she had already fallen back asleep. Katsuko. The rebellious spy. Not his concubine. Not his. After
everything, he had no right to want something for himself.
He picked up the flute again. This at least was comfort he could provide.
Tumblr media
Later that afternoon, Sho and Hiko returned, apologizing for being unable to find ice. Sho held up a bucket filled with water. “It’s not ice, but it’s from a mountain fed stream, so it’s cold.”
Then displaying a bossiness well beyond her years, she shooed Mitsuhide out of Katsuko’s room, telling him that she would change her into more comfortable clothing. “You should rest, Master Kyubei. That way you can stay up with her tonight.”
He didn’t in fact need rest
but Sho seemed to want to do this, so he left her to it. Avoid strong smells. He took a quick trip to the bathhouses and did his best to wash away the odors of incense and fear from his body. He was back in the machiya when Shojumaru arrived to deliver the willow bark, and to escort Sho and Hiko home. When Sho asked if he had gotten enough sleep, he lied and told her he had.
After he’d finally cleared the others out, he made the tea, and resumed his vigil at Katsuko’s side. Without the make-up and elaborate hairstyle she’d worn to portray Kaya or even the boy’s clothing and look of defiance that he would always associate with ‘Katsu,’ she looked young and small. Tiny. Until this moment, he hadn’t realized she was shorter than Mai.
For the first time in days, he hadn’t devoted the bulk of his thoughts to Mai and Hideyoshi. His mission to find and rescue them had stalled, and instead
he had dragged another person into the dark.
“Katsuko." He brushed her hair away from her face.
She batted at his hand. "Nooo. Let me sleep."
"I will. Be patient, Brat. The strange doctor Shojumaru found said I should wake you up periodically." When she shut her eyes and tried to turn away, he brought the tea to her. "If you are able to drink it, I have some willow bark tea for the pain." She didn’t move to take it, so he helped her to sit up, held the cup to her lips, stroking her back until she took a few swallows. It must have tasted terrible, if the look of disgust on her face was anything to judge by.
No use tasting it himself or trying to figure out a flavor combination to mask the bitterness. For all he knew, he would only make it worse.
He set the cup aside – she’d fallen asleep in his arms – he kept her there for a few moments longer than strictly necessary before settling her back on the futon. Holding on to her any longer would be selfish when a mattress was right there.
The only comfort he had any right to offer was more music. He picked up the flute again and played tune after tune, until his fingers cramped, alerting him to the fact that it was time to wake her up once more."Katsuko. Wake up."
"Go away ghost." Ghost? She squinted at him, then moaned, her body shuddering as she covered her head with her hands.  "Let me sleep."
Her hair had tangled and was stuck to her face with sweat, so he found the bucket of still relatively cool water, wet a cloth, and wiped her forehead and cheeks. She sighed a little as she slipped deeper into sleep.
Was she improving at all? How long would she be in pain? And though the healer hadn’t mentioned the possibility, he now recalled that one of his vassals had fallen from a tree and suffered a serious wound to the head. While the man had recovered in body, his mind had returned to childhood, and he’d spent the remainder of his short life unable to care for himself.
If such a thing happened resulted from this injury, he would never forgive himself.
Tumblr media
As the long dark night continued, Mitsuhide divided his time between music and wiping her face with water. Though she didn’t appear to be improving, her condition hadn’t worsened either. When birds began chirping outside, he woke her up once more. "Katsuko. Time to wake up again, Brat."
This time she opened her eyes and focused directly on him. "Where did your friend go?"
"The healer?" He supposed that was who she was referring to, as no one would consider Shojumaru as his friend (Shojumaru included). “Do you think you can sit up long enough to drink this?" He held a cup out to her. "It's gone cold, but Sho would happily brew up an entire vat if I asked."
"Cold is fine." Once again, he helped her to sit, and she was able to clutch the cup to sip the tea. He kept a grip on it too, as she seemed very unsteady, even sitting down. When he put the cup aside, she grabbed onto his shoulder, as if needing him to stay upright.  "Where did you find willow bark?"
"Shojumaru brought it." Only now did he realize that he had not questioned the man about the incident. Not thoroughly. Oxen were generally placid creatures – a runaway cart was unusual. "Do you recall what happened?"
"Arrow." Arrow? Had someone shot an arrow at the animal? That indeed might have caused it to bolt. "Runaway cart. Is Hiko all right?"
"He is fine. Apparently Shojumaru is sufficiently attached to the boy to be grateful." And in that moment, he realized exactly how he could use that information.
How he would use it. Saw exactly how the scenario would unfurl, and exactly what role he would need ‘Kaya’ to play. It could save Mai, Hideyoshi
and keep Katsuko out of the way of Shojumaru’s wrath.
It would condemn him to the dark.
But
 it could succeed.
A soft weight pressed against his chest. Not his conscience – that was long stifled. Katsuko – she’d fallen asleep on him – again, trustingly in his embrace. He pulled her closer for a moment
Had she crept into his heart? When? Had it been during the night they’d talked long into the dark? Earlier? The moment she tried to saw through a rope that bound her hands? The moment she threw a knife at him?
Did it matter? For he could not keep her. He had no right. He shifted her back to the bed, and then, because her hand was still wrapped around his arm, climbed in next to her.
To save her
he would need to ensure she betrayed him.
But first, he would have this night
or what remained of it. He would have at least one memory of sleeping by her side. Of hearing her soft breath. Of feeling warmth next to him. Of brushing her hair from her eyes.
“Feathers.” She murmured just the single word before turning toward him, and curling into his embrace.
Tumblr media
Within another two days, Katsuko was more alert when awake, and sleeping less, but she’d not been able to eat. By this time, Mitsuhide had heard back from Ieyasu, who had generally echoed the healer’s advice, and suggested that a light broth would be appropriate for a convalescent’s stomach. He’d also sent along a small jar of mint oil that he said might ease some of the pain if the patient could handle its application.
Unfortunately, even a few sips of Sho’s fish and rice soup upset Katsuko’s stomach. "Oh hell. I'm going to-"
As Sho grabbed a bucket, Mitsuhide held onto the patient as she vomited the soup back up, keeping her hair out of the way of the hot liquid. The sound of her retching echoed through the room, and her eyes watered. As much as he knew Katsuko needed to eat, Mitushide felt guilty for insisting she attempt it. “Make it stop.” Katsuko’s whispered.
Sho clapped her hand over her face and escaped the room.
He helped Katsuko wash her mouth out with tea, patting her back lightly until she relaxed again. "Thank you. How long has it been?" she asked.
He was relieved to note that while she was still physically injured, her mind seemed far clearer than it had been on the day of the accident. No more talk of ghosts. "Since you picked a fight with a runaway cart? Three days. Some of your bruises all already fading." He lightly touched her eye, noticing that the dark purple was yellowing at the edges. "I imagine your head will feel better soon as well."
“I hope so.” She closed her eyes. “Right now it only hurts when I move. And when I don’t.”
Recalling Ieyasu’s mint oil, he asked, "Do you think a strong scent will make you feel sick?"
There was a hesitation before she answered. "Maybe."
He got the container of oil, and opened it for a moment, waving it toward her. "What about this scent?"
"So far it seems tolerable." Since that answer had seemed fairly confident, he moved the oil closer, held it open for longer.
No negative reaction. He knelt by her head, holding it by her nose. "And now?"
She breathed a moment. "Still fine. As long as I don't move or open my eyes. Why?"
"This oil may help with the pain, but if I put it on you, I don't want it to make you ill again." Easing the pain at the expense of making her sick again would not be a worthwhile exchange. "May I?"
He held the oil still, waiting for her consent before he placed a drop of the oil on his fingertip, and lightly drew a tiny circle in the corner of her forehead. He paused again, wanting to be certain that this wouldn’t make her ill before he trailed his finger down to her ear. The lines of tension in her forehead eased somewhat. "That's nice."
Encouraged by that response, he massaged more oil into her neck, and she sighed and arched toward him. Almost the way she had pressed against him during that kiss in de Sousa’s office. "Interesting. That response makes me curious to see what would happen if we employed this oil in other situations."
He could imagine that rubbing this oil in more
intimate places might be somewhat arousing.
After a long pause, during which he hoped she was imagining the same, she finally said, "Great. Let me know how it turns out."
His rebellious brat had returned to him. "You would know long before that."
Did she have an answer to that? A quip? A blush? Apparently, he was not to learn her response. She’d fallen asleep again.
Just as well. Safer for her. Safer for them both.

The thing with Schtitt: like most Europeans of his generation, anchored from infancy to certain permanent values which - yes, OK, granted - may, admittedly, have a whiff of proto-fascist potential about them, but which do, nevertheless (the values), anchor nicely the soul and course of a life - Old World patriarchal stuff like honor and discipline and fidelity to some larger unit - Gerhardt Schtitt does not so much dislike the modern O.N.A.N.ite U.S. of A. as finds it hilarious and frightening at the same time. Probably mostly just alien. This should not be rendered in exposition like this, but Mario Incandenza has a severely limited range of verbatim recall. Schtitt was educated in pre-Unification Gymnasium under the rather Kanto-Hegelian idea that jr. athletics was basically just training for citizenship, that jr. athletics was about learning to sacrifice the hot narrow imperatives of the Self - the needs, the desires, the fears, the multiform cravings of the individual appetite will - to the larger imperatives of a team (OK, the State) and a set of delimiting rules (OK, the Law). It sounds almost frighteningly simple-minded, though not to Mario, across the redwood table, listening. By learning, in palestra, the virtues that pay off directly in competitive games, the well-disciplined boy begins assembling the more abstract, gratification-delaying skills necessary for being a 'team player' in a larger arena: the even more subtly diffracted moral chaos of full-service citizenship in a State. Except Schtitt says Ach, but who can imagine this training serving its purpose in an experialist and waste-exporting nation that's forgotten privation and hardship and the discipline which hardship teaches by requiring? A U.S. of modern A. where the State is not a team or a code, but a sort of sloppy intersection of desires and fears, where the only public consensus a boy must surrender to is the acknowledged primacy of straight-line pursuing this flat and short-sighted idea of personal happiness:
'The happy pleasure of the person alone, yes?'
'Except why do you let deLint tie Pemulis and Shaw's shoes to the lines, if the lines aren't boundaries?'
Without there is something bigger. Nothing to contain and give meaning. Lonely. Verstiegenheit.'
'Bless you'
'Any something. The what: this is more unimportant than that there is something.'
Schtitt one time was telling Mario, as they respecitvely walked and tottered down Comm. Ave. eastward into Allston to see about getting a gourmet ice cream someplace along there, that when he was Mario's age - or maybe more like Hal's age, whatever - he (Schtitt) had once fallen in love with a tree, a willow that from a certain humid twilit perspective had looked like a mysterious woman aswirl with gauze, this certain tree in the public Platz of some West German town whose name sounded to Mario like the sound of somebody strangling. Schtitt reported being seriously smitten with the tree:
They respectively walked and tottered, ice-cream-bound, Mario moving like the one of them who was truly old, mind off his stride because he was trying to think hard about what Schtitt believed. Mario's thinking-hard expression resembles what for another person would be the sort of comically distorted face made to amuse an infant. He was trying to think how to articulate some reasonable form of a question like: But then how does this surrender-the-personal-individual-wants-to-the-larger-State-or-beloved-tree-or-something stuff work in a deliberately individual sport like competitive junior tennis, where it's just you v. one other guy?
And then also, again, still, what are those boundaries, if they're not baselines, that contain and direct its infinite expansion inward, that make tennis like chess on the run, beautiful and infinitely dense?
Schtitt's thrust, and his one great irresistible attraction in the eyes of Mario's late father: The true opponent, the enfolding boundary, is the player himself. Always and only the self out there, on court, to be met, fought, brought to the table to hammer out terms. The competing boy on the net's other side: he is not the foe: he is more the partner in the dance. He is the what is the word excuse or occasion for meeting the self. As you are his occasion. Tennis's beauty's infinite roots are self-competitve. You compete with your own limits to transcend the self in imagination and execution. Disappear inside the game: break through limits: transcend: improve and win. Which is why tennis is an essentially tragic enterprise, to improve and grow as a serious junior, with ambitions. You seek to vanquish and transcend the limited self whose limits make the game possible in the first place. It is tragic and sad and chaotic and lovely. All life is the same, as citizens of the human State: the animating limits are within, to be killed and mourned, over and over again.
Mario thinks of a steel pole raised to double its designed height and clips his shoulder on the green steel edge of a dumpster, pirouetting halfway to the cement before Schtitt darts in to catch him, and it almost looks like they're doing a dance-floor dip as Schtitt says this game the players are all at E.T.A. to learn, this infinite system of decisions and angles and lines Mario's brothers worked so brutishly hard to master: junior athletics is but one facet of the real gem: life's endless war against he self you cannot live without.
Schtitt then falls into the sort of silence of someone who's enjoying mentally rewinding and replaying what he just came up with. Mario thinks hard again. He's trying to think of how to articulate something like: But then is battling and vanquishing the self the same as destroying yourself? Is that like saying life is pro-death? Three passing Allstonian street-kids mock and make fun of Mario's appearance behind the pair's backs. Some of Mario's thinking-faces are almost orgasmic: fluttery and slack. And then but so what's the difference between tennis and suicide, life and death, the game and its own end?
It's always Schtitt who ends up experimenting with some exotic ice-cream flavor, when they arrive. Mario always chickens out and opts for good old basic chocolate when the moment of decision at the counter comes. Thinking along the lines of like Better the flavor you know for sure you already love.
'And so. No different, maybe,' Schtitt concedes, sitting up straight on a waffle-seated aluminum chair with Mario beneath an askew umbrella that makes the flimsy little table it's rooted to shake and clank in the sidewalk's breeze. 'Maybe no different, so,' biting hard into his tricolored cone. He feels at the side of his white jaw, where there's some sort of red welt, it looks like. 'Not different' - looking out into the Ave.'s raised median at the Green Line train rattling past downhill - 'except the chance to play.' He brightens in preperation to laugh in his startling German roar, saying 'No? Yes? The chance to play, yes?' And Mario loses a dollop of chocolate down his chin, because he has this involuntary thing where he laughs whenever anyone else does, and Schtitt is finding what he has just said very amusing indeed.

How Legal Metrology Laws Impact Packaging and Labeling Compliance
Tumblr media
Compliance with packaging & labeling regulations isn't just about presentation it's a legal obligation. Legal Metrology laws in India govern how manufacturers, importers, & packers display crucial information on product packaging. For businesses, ignoring these guidelines can result in penalties, product recalls, and even reputational damage.
If you're looking to stay compliant and avoid legal hurdles, understanding the implications of Legal Metrology laws is essential. This guide explains how these regulations impact packaging & labeling and how Om Garuda Group can help you navigate them smoothly.
What Is Legal Metrology & Why It Matters?
Legal Metrology is a field of law that deals with measurements & measuring instruments. It ensures that consumers get accurate information regarding quantity, size, weight, and price of packaged goods.
Key Goals:
Promote fair trade
Prevent misleading product information
Ensure standardization in measurements
Protect consumer interests
The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 specifically lay down the framework for how packaged products should be labeled before being sold in the Indian market.
Mandatory Labeling Requirements Under Legal Metrology
Manufacturers, importers & distributors must ensure their packaging displays these details:
Name & address of the manufacturer or importer
Net quantity (weight, volume, length, etc.)
Manufacturing date & expiry date (if applicable)
Retail sale price including all taxes (MRP)
Customer care details (email or phone)
Country of origin (for imported goods)
Product name or description
Failure to include this information can lead to fines or prosecution under Legal Metrology law. Getting your legal metrology online certification ensures your products are ready for sale with compliant labeling.
Who Needs to Comply?
The law applies to:
FMCG companies
E-commerce sellers
Importers & exporters
Food & beverage brands
Electronics manufacturers
Cosmetic & personal care brands
If your product is packaged for retail, it must meet Legal Metrology labeling requirements. Compliance is not optional—it’s mandatory.
How Non-Compliance Can Hurt Your Business
Even small mistakes on your label can lead to big consequences:
Fines up to â‚č5,000 per product
Seizure of goods
Suspension of import licenses
Customer complaints & bad reviews
Loss of brand trust
Using LMPC certification online ensures your import & packaging process stays within regulatory boundaries.
How to Get LMPC Registration
LMPC stands for Legal Metrology Packaged Commodities. It is required for importers dealing with pre-packaged goods.
Steps to Apply:
Prepare the required documents (Importer Exporter Code, GST, PAN, etc.)
Fill the online application on the Legal Metrology portal
Submit a sample of packaging labels
Pay the prescribed fee
Wait for approval from the Department of Legal Metrology
Om Garuda Group helps clients with documentation, submission & follow-ups, making the LMPC process hassle-free.
Common Challenges Faced by Businesses
Even experienced companies can make errors. Some common issues include:
Incorrect font size or label placement
Missing information (like MRP or customer care number)
Using foreign language without a Hindi/English translation
Not updating label formats as per new amendments
Staying updated with compliance norms is crucial for product success in both domestic & international markets.
Benefits of Staying Compliant
Builds customer trust with clear product information
Reduces the risk of legal action
Helps smooth customs clearance for imports
Boosts brand image & credibility
Saves money by avoiding fines & product recalls
Partnering with Om Garuda Group ensures your business is protected on all legal fronts.
Conclusion
Legal Metrology compliance isn't just paperwork it's a part of your brand's promise to the customer. With detailed labeling and proper registration, your business earns both trust & legal credibility.
If you're dealing with packaged commodities or imports, don’t ignore Legal Metrology rules. Invest in proper certification and consultation with experts like Om Garuda Group. The hazards of amateurity
Aside from the fact that amateurity isn't actually a word, the main problem with it is endless, boundless, unrelenting ignorance in just about every field.
On the one hand, it means I get to do a lot of research upon very little provocations. On the other, my Google Fu may set a new definition for "weak" so my research is rarely on point.
Take this Monday, for instance. I decided it was terribly important to know two things in preparation for my new novel (another Pride and Prejudice variation, as yet untitled):
The name of a magazine/ periodical which Lizzy Bennet may have sent a secret message to.
What impact smuggling during the Regency actually had on the war effort and whether or not the War minister (as opposed to the tax department) would have cared enough to get involved.
Now I grant you I should maybe have sought these answers before making the two assumed facts the basis of my new novel. As I did not, I went barrelling around and as a result, my browser history for Monday is somewhat extensive. I'm actually irritated at Google, because it used to be easy to scroll through your history and revisit links, or even export a huge amount of data but now the page just jumps around so I'll be lucky if I ever get to revisit the more interesting-but-not-useful-enough-to-bookmark pages. (If you bookmark everything interesting you need a search engine just to find stuff in your bookmarks.)
So, having done what I can to review my activity, the search process went something like:
I will write the scene where Darcy tries to cheer up Georgiana by showing her a magazine puzzle.
What should the magazine be called? There must be puzzle magazines from the 18th century, right? Ooh, this looks interesting. And it cites this resource.
Sidebar: Did they call them puzzles? Riddles? Conundrums? What does etymonline say? Conundrums is a good one.
Back to the resource from point 2. Oh hey, Jonathan Swift had an enigma published in a journal called Muse's Mercury? Cool name, no wikipedia page. Ooh, they have scanned copies on archive.org. Oh, it's a century older than I want it to be. MF the 1800s are the NINETEENTH century! Get it together girl!
But there must be other magazines on archive.org. I'll filter and see what we get. Ladies Weekly magazine? No (for reasons). Gentleman's weekly? Also no (for other reasons). Oooh, The Weekly Entertainer and West of England Miscellany. Looks good! Is Derbyshire in the West of England? Close enough.
Now for smuggling. Any mention of it in my history books or wiki pages on Napoleonic wars? Nope. Is there any mention of any famous smugglers? Ooh, there's a wikipedia list of pirates. Hmm. They're all American. But there's some books linked as additional resources... and they're no good either.
OK, new tack. Smuggling in the Regency generally. Blog post about Smuggling in Jane Austen's time... And links! To the Liverpool Maritime museum! What a brilliant idea, they're bound to have something. Couple of resources I can't access until I'm in England, but a few websites. One really old one that references a book now available on Project Gutenberg! I do love me some project Gutenberg. (King's Cutters and Smugglers 1700-1855 by E. Keble Chatterton) And a book I need to buy. That's fine I can afford one book.
I don't like Darcy calling that magazine the Entertainer, it's too vague. Let's just double check its full name... Oh, no. Published in America. Not Entertainment Weekly in the West of England but to the West of England. Drat. Other options... (for the next half hour I looked at other options. Failed to find any in the right period and country of origin which I could actually use. Then I left the computer to read my code-breaking book, returned and spent another hour on the futile search for a magazine.)
That was Monday. Monday evening I wailed to my husband about how hard it is to find an appropriate journal and suddenly recalled my Full works of Lewis Carroll. It includes a series of mathematical problems which were published in a journal (if you aren't aware, the guy who wrote Alice in Wonderland was a university maths lecturer called Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.) And if I can find that journal, and it's old enough, I'll be in business.
Tuesday morning: the books. Ah hah! Carroll/ Dodgson published his puzzles in the Monthly Packet. Umm, no good. But maybe there's a wikipedia list of magazines published in Britain. There is! Can't filter it by year, so I'll just click the links that look promising aaaaaaand Bingo! There is literally a monthly magazine called "The Monthly Magazine" which published poetry and letters. They would certainly accept an enciphered letter and call it a conundrum.
OK, it's been two days of research, I should probably go and work on other stuff.
I know women weren't accepted in formal education, but why? I wonder if there's something there I can use...
Everyone keeps telling me I'm not neurospicy. I have my doubts.

Define CE & CEC Inspection Service in India by Seacor International
As a response to India's fast-evolving industry landscape, electrical quality standards and safety measures should be fulfilled on the part of producers and consumers alike. That's where CE (Conformité Européenne) and CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) testing enters the scene as the vital standard of reference for the assessment of electrical equipment and products. Seacor International, a leading inspection and certification services provider, offers expert CE and CEC testing services in India through which organizations are assured of complying with regulatory provisions confidently.
Knowing the Importance of CE and CEC Inspections
CE marking is a regulatory mark of conformity with products in the European Economic Area (EEA), which ensures that the product is compliant with EU safety, health, and environmental standards. Similarly, CEC certification ensures that electrical equipment is compliant with the Canadian Electrical Code, which specifies electrical safety in Canada. Indian exporters and manufacturers will be required to meet these standards if they are exporting overseas. Products will remain withheld from global trade if they are not inspected stringently by CE and CEC, thus resulting in economic losses in addition to loss of reputation.
Seacor International's Excellence in CE & CEC Inspections
Seacor International is a one-of-a-kind organization in India so far as complete end-to-end testing and inspection of CE and CEC are involved.
The corporation prides itself in possessing extremely skilled engineers and inspectors, well trained in international procedures and standards too. Seacor not only takes the electrical equipment up to but also above the regulatory level by placing stringent checks on the product design, manufacturing process, and safety. Their inspection strategy is focused towards early detection of risks, thus avoidance of rework charges and product recall.
Custom Inspection Solutions for Various Industries
Seacor International also provides services to a broad range of industries including manufacturing, automotive, consumer electronics, and heavy equipment. Because each industry is confronted with its respective issues, Seacor also customizes inspection plans by product category and by customer specification. From low-voltage equipment to industrial controls and consumer appliances, Seacor CE and CEC inspections allow companies to keep products safe and reliable and build customer confidence.
Benefits of Choosing Seacor International in India
Choosing Seacor International's CE and CEC inspection services has a number of advantages. First, it ensures easy import into the European and Canadian markets due to adherence to regulations. Secondly, strict inspections reduce cases of product failure or safety hazards on release, guaranteeing end-users' safety and health. Seacor's open reporting process and certification also help customers to maintain proper documentation, which is especially important for auditing as well as legal requirements. With its competitive rates and prompt turnaround of service, Seacor has become a value partner to Indian manufacturers and exporters. How Seacor International Supports International Trade Compliance
In the contemporary globalized economy, international quality and safety standards compliance is not an option anymore. While aiding companies in acquiring CE and CEC certifications, Seacor International also helps companies navigate the regulatory complexity of legislation. Seacor International's consultancy helps companies acclimatize to evolving norms and future-proof themselves against compliance requirements. Its proactive approach dispels ambiguity and inculcates a quality and safety culture in the supply chain.
Conclusion: Allowing Seacor to perform Unreliable CE & CEC Inspections
To Indian firms ready to create and firm up their presence in Europe, Canada, and other parts of the world, CE and CEC conformity is a significant process. Seacor International offers secure and stiff inspection services to make compliance easy, remove risks, and improve competitiveness in the marketplace. Through their services, Indian manufacturers and exporters are able to introduce themselves to the international market securely and gain trust with customers in the long term.

How to Personalize Your Campaign with a Direct Mail Service
Tumblr media
Direct mail marketing continues to thrive as a powerful tool for customer engagement, especially when executed with personalization and strategic provider selection. In the digital age, where inboxes are cluttered and attention spans are short, physical mail stands out — particularly when it's tailored to the recipient. Whether you're launching a targeted campaign or scaling your direct marketing, understanding how to personalize your efforts and choose the right direct mail marketing company can make all the difference.
This guide walks you through both aspects: how to personalize your direct mail campaigns effectively, and how to evaluate and select the right direct mail marketing partner for your brand.
Why Personalization Matters in Direct Mail Campaigns
Personalization in direct mail isn't just about adding a name — it's about creating a relevant, emotionally resonant experience for the recipient. A personalized direct mail piece has the power to boost response rates, increase conversion, and build long-term customer loyalty.
Key Benefits of Personalizing Direct Mail:
Higher Response Rates: Personalized mail is more likely to be opened, read, and acted upon.
Improved ROI: Targeted offers reduce waste and increase the likelihood of a sale.
Stronger Customer Relationships: Tailored content builds trust and relevance.
Increased Brand Recall: People are more likely to remember your brand when your message resonates personally.
How to Personalize Your Campaign with a Direct Mail Service
1. Start with Clean, Segmented Data
Personalization starts with your customer data. Without clean and segmented data, your campaign will fall short.
Use CRM Tools: Export and segment customer data based on demographics, purchase history, location, and behavior.
Validate Addresses: Use address verification APIs to ensure mail reaches the intended recipient.
Update Regularly: Keep your mailing list fresh by removing duplicates and correcting errors.
2. Define Audience Personas
Segmenting by buyer persona allows you to tailor messaging more precisely.
Create Customer Profiles: Define your typical customer’s needs, motivations, and preferences.
Use Behavioral Insights: Base your segments on past interactions, such as recent purchases or site visits.
Match Messaging to Persona: Write content that speaks directly to each segment’s pain points and desires.
3. Customize the Message and Offer
Generic offers are a missed opportunity. Personalization should extend to the copy, CTA, and offer.
Use Variable Data Printing (VDP): Customize text, images, and offers for each recipient.

Angela Aquereburu (born 11 January 1977) is a Togolese screenwriter, film producer and film director.
Wikipedia
Angela Aquereburu and her partner Jean-Luc Rabatel, who are based in Lomé, Togo, wear many hats: scriptwriting, directing, producing, distributing
They founded the audio-visual production company, Yobo Studios (originally Caring International) in 2009, which specialises in fiction with a focus on short-format mini-series. It was Angela’s father, an older-timer of Togolese television, who suggested to the couple to bring their content to the local scene, in order to give a much-needed change from the telenovelas and American sitcoms that inundated the Togolese channels. Moreover, she stresses the importance of audiovisual programming as a vital tool to transmit strong messages regarding health, ecology and democracy to the general public.
As an objective of Yobo Studios is to provide original and exportable programmes and bring a different perspective regarding Africa, Angela and Jean-Luc have worked with DISCOP Africa, whose platform has become an integral part of Yobo Studios’ goals. As its website indicates, “DISCOP markets help entertainment content producers, sellers and buyers connect, build relationships, pitch projects and make deals in Africa and the Middle East.” In an interview with Africa Salons at the closing of DISCOP Abidjan 2016, Angela recalls that around ten years ago the audio-visual sector in African was hard hit and to have content visibility was difficult. She notes for instance, that because of the high cost of transportation, to meet people from South Africa, Cameroon and elsewhere was a bit difficult. Hence, with DISCOP there was an opportunity to bring together professionals—audio-visual producer, cable operator, television distributorïżœïżœto network throughout Africa.
Yobo Studios’ early success, the fiction mini-series Zem, has led to others, notably, the recently produced Hospital IT, a medical dramedy produced in 2017. There are several projects on the horizon: a television programme devoted to women, a feature film with a woman protagonist, an English-language film, among others.
In addition to an interest in producing realistic stories about everyday African experiences to present to the African public, Angela wants also to distribute her films more broadly in order to make them visible on the international scene. She explains in ForbesAfrica: "To make content exportable, you need a universal story, good actors, beautiful images, good music and to respect international broadcast codes.”

Angela Aquereburu, based in Togo, is currently a Founder at Yobo Studios. Angela Aquereburu brings experience from previous roles at Caring International Sarl, Jonas Mb, Agilent Technologies and Convergys.
