Walking Once Again

A new low on Thursday for my blood sugar: 166. Avoidance of sweets and carbs and plenty of walking seems to be helping. Once we’ve had our first PCP appointments in September, I hope there can be adjustments to my meds schedule.

After morning coffee and brain games, we headed down to Creswell for a loaf of bread and the chipotle ham brioche breakfast sandwiches. Then we returned to Eugene and hit DSW to get some new walking shoes with better support for Nancy.

We then started our Thursday walking experience at Alton Baker Park, stopping first at the Nobel Peace Park, opened in 2013, celebrating the more than 20 American recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize.  The park honors recipients ranging from Theodore Roosevelt and Frank Kellogg, to Martin Luther King, Jr., and Barack Obama.

From there we crossed the Willamette River by way of the Peter DeFazio Bridge, a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that was completed in 2000 and cost $2.8 million. It connected to the South Bank trail system and took us to the Downtown Riverfront Park, part of an ongoing redevelopment of an old industrial area, a project that will see the construction of a brand new neighborhood, along with an urban plaza and a three-acre park.

We got home about an hour before I needed to leave for my Thursday evening recovery meeting, so we quickly prepared leftovers of meatloaf and rice, and cooked some green beans. I took an umbrella with me to the meeting, but the rain did not start until I was back inside Springfield’s city limits.

We closed the evening with the Wednesday edition of Colbert and then viewed the first episode of “High Desert” on AppleTV. DINING Elevating Bishop Arts’ youthful glow

Developer has eye on plans to add boutique hotel, more eateries

If you think you’re familiar with Dallas’ Bishop Arts District — its funky shops, pretty restaurants and fringe attitude — its most prolific developer is far from finished.

Exxir Capital developer Michael Nazerian has built out just 15% of the nearly 16 acres he bought southwest of West Davis Street and North Zang Boulevard.

Next, his company will build a boutique hotel, 600 apartments, at least five restaurants, a private club and an underground discotheque.

The project Nazerian started in 2009 is now worth about $250 million, he estimated.

Full build-out will include about 2 million square feet of restaurant, retail and living spaces in this sector of the Bishop Arts District, Nazerian explained in a series of Dallas Morning News interviews.

That’s a lot of change for this historically Hispanic area separated from downtown Dallas by the Trinity River.

Nazerian agreed. “We’re humbled by how much effort it takes,” he said.

Nazerian’s new buildings stand in juxtaposition to the 100-year-old buildings nearby majority-owned by Jim Lake, an unaffiliated “redeveloper” who makes use of aging areas.

Nazerian says the Bishop Arts District needs both old and new.

His vision was to “create the most charming, walkable neighborhood in America,” a plan inspired by his travels all over the world.

Nazerian’s parents are immigrants from England and Iran.

Bishop Avenue is often buzzing with couples shopping, families eating and bachelorette parties day drinking.

The neighborhood feels young, alive and diverse.

Some neighbors who have lived here for generations are still a short distance away from the cranes and bulldozers.

Some were displaced by development.

Nazerian said there’s “comfort” in a neighborhood with history.

“The culture isn’t being recreated from nothing, but rather, enhanced and grown from what it was,” he said.

Restaurants play big role

The Bishop Arts District’s redevelopment over the past 15 to 20 years has been anchored by restaurants.

Early arrivers included Oddfellows, Lockhart Smokehouse and farm-to-table restaurant Bolsa, today reinvented as Encina.

Dozens more have kept diners coming back, like local favorite Taco y Vino and nationally lauded Italian restaurant Lucia.

Nazerian’s restaurants Paradiso, Bar Eden and Casablanca have gotten reputations for their good looks.

They’re like models, standing a little too tall in the neighborhood, wearing designer shades.

Nazerian and his team designed them that way on purpose.

But he’s rarely satisfied.

“It irks me that this is seen as a pretty face, an Instagram spot,” he said over lunch at Paradiso.

It is pretty in here, I mused, sitting underneath a chandelier I’d like in my own house, and near a tall houseplant I don’t know how to grow.

The menu is serious, Nazerian insisted.

As if to drive that point home, he hired Julian Rodarte as Exxir’s new “director of experience” to help with the company’s growth in the Bishop Arts District.

Dallas native Rodarte is a Culinary Institute of America grad who co-owns Beto & Son with his dad in Dallas’ Trinity Groves.

Rodarte was also once affiliated with the group that purchased Trudy’s, an Austin Tex-Mex institution.

Rodarte has the attitude of a TV chef.

He’s calm and confident.

Nazerian was drawn to him because of his “childlike enthusiasm” for new projects and restaurant hospitality.

When Rodarte started the job in November 2023, he learned all about the Bishop Arts restaurants from Exxir’s executive chef Nick Hurry, who has been with the company from the start.

Rodarte’s first plan: Don’t mess with Paradiso.

It’s the highest-grossing restaurant in the fleet.

And even though it has a reputation as an Instagram spot, chefs here are making their own pasta, bread and pizza dough.

Paradiso’s executive chef Adam Krajewski occasionally experiments with new specials like a vegetarian smoked carbonara, inspired by the time he spent in the kitchen at Eleven Madison Park in New York City.

Rodarte will instead spend more time at Tejas, Exxir’s Tex-Mex restaurant.

He and Hurry will refresh its menu, adding new items like an appetizer of duck tacos served in tiny, crispy shells and topped with mole.

He’ll also do a riff on a Choco Taco — the waffle cone taco from his childhood. Early iterations from pastry chef Erika Vasquez show taco-shaped cones stuffed with chocolate mousse and peanuts or vanilla ice cream and sprinkles.

Rodarte has also put some work into the Casablanca menu.

The landlocked restaurant with a beach theme has become a hot spot for patio drinkers.

Its private karaoke rooms inside draw crowds in the evenings.

Rodarte is rethinking what kind of food matches this sunny spot.

So far, he’s added veggie dumplings and popcorn chicken with gochujang.

All of it — the food, the drinks and the service — is about creating places where people want to be, Nazerian said.

“I love that Julian understands big-H ‘hospitality,’” Nazerian said.

It matches Nazerian’s goal to “create beautiful places for people to connect” in the Bishop Arts District.

What’s the vibe?

If the Bishop Arts District is going to have an Uptown-like vibe, Tipsy Beach is right on time.

Tipsy Beach is a riff on Tipsy Elf, a Christmastime event in the Bishop Arts District.

It brought so many new faces to Oak Cliff that it just made sense to replicate it during bikini season, the team said.

“It brings energy,” Nazerian said. “Youth.”

At this summertime pop-up, three main bars near Casablanca will serve cocktails with party favors, like a little squeaky shark swimming in a blue cocktail.

Customers may never know it, but the juices are fresh-squeezed.

The team cores out pineapples and coconuts for drinks.

The effort is reminiscent of Paradiso, the model that made straight As.

There’s technique at all of Exxir’s restaurants and bars.

But they look pretty, too.

Between now and mid-July 2024, Tipsy Beach will host Barbie -themed beach parties, toga parties and a mai tai cocktail competition.

On summer evenings, it won’t be surprising to find groups posing on corners of Oak Cliff lit up in neon.

Is this the Oak Cliff of the future?

Maybe.

“I want to say there’s a grand plan,” Rodarte said of Tipsy Beach, “but we really just want to have a lot of fun.”

Next, Rodarte will work on the hotel — one Nazerian likens to San Antonio’s Pearl Brewery project anchored by the Hotel Emma.

Rodarte will oversee the opening of the fine-dining restaurant that will be installed in Exxir’s coming-soon hotel.

He’ll help with the discotheque and much more.

Rodarte was once CEO of Trinity Groves, another food-heavy development where Rodarte would “play restaurant,” as he put it.

Trinity Groves, like the Bishop Arts, is a growing part of Dallas built in a historically low-income neighborhood.

Nazerian is sure that his investment in the Bishop Arts District is sound. But he’s careful how he talks about it.

“I think we’re in the first inning,” he said. “We have a great base. And now we brought in this superstar, Julian.”

Edi Rama was strongly criticised on Tuesday for allegedly intimidating Ambrozia Meta, a journalist for Albanian television channel Syri TV, by touching her cheek after ignoring her questions at a press conference in Tirana.

Rama made the allegedly intimidating gesture and then walked off after Meta asked him about an investment project on the island of Sazan – an environmentally protected area – where it has been reported that Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump, will be involved in building properties for the tourist trade.

“I was asking Rama about the investment in Sazan and if is it an investment scheme like the one at the port of Durres. And when I told him at the end that there is no investment in the port of Durres, but the apartments [at the upmarket port redevelopment] are being sold [before the buildings are fully constructed], he said: ‘Go and look at it [the Durres project]’ and touched me on the cheek with his hand. I told him: ‘Don’t touch me anymore’, and that was it,” Meta told BIRN.

“Unfortunately, Prime Minister Rama is now demonstrating his usual arrogance towards journalists with physical contact. I’m sorry that the head of the government can’t control himself when asked about issues of public interest,” she added.

Rama rejected demands for a public apology, writing on X that there had not been “anything near to an aggression” and that “all questions were answered patiently”.

Media rights organisations condemned the incident.

“[We are] standing in solidarity with journalist Ambrozia Meta who faced intimidation by Prime Minister while simply seeking transparency and accountability. Urging PM Edi Rama to engage respectfully with the press,” Safe Journalists Network said in a statement.

The Union of Albanian Journalists said that Meta had the right to question Rama at the press conference.

“The prime minister not only did not give a concrete answer to the specific question, but… avoided the obligation to give a concrete figure for the possible public benefits of one of the biggest projects in the field of Albanian tourism,” the Union of Albanian Journalists declared on Tuesday.

“The prime minister’s refusal to and avoidance of [giving] concrete answers was accompanied by intimidating language and the violation of ethics, going up to the violation of the physical integrity of the journalist,” it added.

Rama has clashed with journalists, including Meta, on previous occasions. In 2022, he temporarily barred her and another journalist from his press conferences.

In March 2022, Rama told Meta that she needed “re-education” after she asked about a ruling Socialist Party MP who had been arrested.

“Today you lose the right to my answers [at press conferences] for the next 60 days. You will go into re-education [camp],” Rama said.

In July 2022, when journalist Kelvin Muka asked Foreign Minister Olta Xhacka about a strategic investment project that was won by her husband, Rama interrupted the press conference, saying that the question was not ethical and barred the journalist from press conferences until October.

“You will go into re-education [camp]…You are not welcome at any press conference,” Rama said.

In 2023, Albania was ranked in 96th place out of 180 countries around the world in the global press freedom index compiled by international watchdog Reporters Without Borders.

“Journalists critical of the government are often subjected to political attacks designed to discredit them, and they have trouble accessing state-held information. A frustration on procrastination.

In 2016, Linus Torvalds talked about not being a visionary. As an engineer, he looks at the ground wanting to fix the pothole right in front of him before he falls in.

As an aspiring software engineer myself, I can't blame him - but I find it hard to put myself in those shoes. I can't call myself a visionary either.

It's all about procrastination.

I have many coding projects that I've always wanted to get back to. For example, I want to redevelop my custom Discord bot that I made for my own private server. I want to continue building that application that can inform people about fires near them and whether they should evacuate.

I end up never touching those. Yet, I aspire big to where I have all the money in the world and I wouldn't even spend it foolishly. If anything, 100% would go back to the planet. I dream of making a positive impact to the world around me as a person who lives on it and I do not take it for granted.

I dream of things that may not be realistic now, but when I have a stable job. Unfortunately, I'm not there yet. I've got years to go. It hits hard in adolescence with all those ideas in your head, playing pretend with different names, building rocket ships and flying to outer space, and reality yells at you to make money. Sounds familiar?

I find it frustrating that in today's world you can continue to go around in circles and not get anything done. It's bureaucracy at best, corruption at worst. Even with some semblance of employment, it's a nagging cycle between a job provider who doesn't seem to be interested in the best interests of me or my current employer. There's worse examples I know of, but it's just depressing.

It's all about procrastination. Scheduling time in has worked, and even works for my Twitch streams, yet I can't get back to doing what I want to work on because I'm continuously floating up and down on how I want to make a difference to the world and people around me. It sucks that reality would like to stop my plans and glue me back onto the ground.

If only it wasn't that way. Less work, more play, isn't that what they say? And yet, it seems we're going the opposite direction. It's as if the world doesn't care, because it ain't broke until your world is at peril.

If only things were different and you could clap your hands and the world would be united. Yet, a dictator sends troops on a special operation, two superpowers argue over a balloon and the world stands on their feet wondering why there's no way to prevent mass shootings in the only nation where it regularly happens.

Perhaps I'm not the only one who procrastinates to a minor scale. There's people like me, probably more stubborn like me, who don't want to stand up because it doesn't benefit anyone. Well, it's easier to say "have you tried?" than to actually try.

It's about how the world goes around in something humanity should really fix. And yet, incompetent politicians around the world can't get shit together. So the world goes nowhere. And we all procrastinate over it and we stand still. We're back to square one, and I think that's where we will be unless something changes.

Knowing the world, it won't. After two years of a pandemic, political bullshittery and climate crisis, humanity got so tired and went "idgaf anymore".

And who can blame ourselves? It's all about procrastination.

Winning their trust was going to take some effort, and when you start to fall for a local cowboy, you wonder if you really needed Blayne more than the city life after all.

“This is crazy!”

Glancing at Natalia next to you in the car as you neared the border for Blayne, you grinned. “I thought you grew up on farms?”

“The kind near the city. Nothing like this. There’s just a whole lot of land out here.”

“I would ask if you want me to turn around and take you back, but after travelling for this long, I want to just be done from being in this car.”

Laughing, Natalia craned her neck to use the side mirror. “I think the truck behind us might find that a little burdensome too.”

“I’m amazed that truck of his made it to the city and back.”

“Aren’t you glad Jaehyun came for you?” she wondered, and you couldn’t hide the genuine smile that spread out your lips immediately. “You’re smitten!”

“You’ve seen him. How could I not be?”

“Blayne’s livestock sure are made of fine specimens,” Natalia teased, and you laughed heartily.

“They do claim to have the best pigs in the nation, but I’m not so sure if that relates to all the men they have, Nat.”

“Well, the two I’ve seen…” She trailed off to kiss her fingers. “Total chef kiss.”

“Avery is single, too.”

“I never asked.”

“You didn’t need to. I could see the wheels turning from here.”

“Do you reckon he’d want a country Belle or-”

You grinned. “For Avery, I think he likes women in whatever way they come.”

“That doesn’t speak much for my chances.”

“Why not, Miss Natalia?” you chimed, and your best friend swatted your arm. “He didn’t even refer to me like that when I met him. Should I be sad?”

“Stop trying to snatch my cowboy away from me. You already have your own.”

Suddenly the truck signalled its horn behind you and you glanced up into the rear-mirror, noticing the indicator of the truck now on. Turning your attention to the side of the road, you couldn’t help but laugh at that gas station you had gone to all those months ago appearing again.

You didn’t need any gas, but it seemed Jaehyun’s truck needed the pit stop. Getting out of your vehicle, you noticed the smoke coming out from under the hood. Walking over to Jaehyun’s side, you gasped noisily. “Looks like it’s finally died on you.”

“She’s not dead,” he grumbled, running a hand through his hair agitatedly after popping the hood. “She needs water.”

“And a retirement,” Avery added on, leaning on the side of Jaehyun’s truck whilst shaking his head. “You and your stubborn ways.”

“I’m not giving up on her,” Jaehyun announced, and you frowned with the level of emotion you heard in his tone. He groaned. “Though, I think I might need to leave her here tonight so she doesn’t overheat further.”

Avery nodded. “I’ll go sort it out with Mick inside the station.”

Kicking the tire gently, Jaehyun turned to look over your shoulder, not quite meeting your eye. Stepping in and placing your hands on his hips, you shot him an encouraging smile. “We’ll come and pick your truck up tomorrow.”

“We?”

“Well, I’d offer to tow it, but my car won’t handle that. I’m sure Avery’s truck will, though.”

“I’m starting to feel nervous,” Jaehyun confessed, and you blinked curiously. “At your return. People are going to talk.”

“I hope they’ve been talking up a storm. And that they are still willing to talk even when I’m there. Nat and I will rely on that talk to get things moving.”

“You’re so certain about this,” he observed, and you nodded once. “Why?”

“Because this is my project. I invested a lot of my time and energy into Blayne and found the deficit too glaring to just forget about it all when your Dad ordered me to leave. Further, I can’t just stop loving you either. You and I still have a lot to discuss.”

Jaehyun nodded thoughtfully, his signature lopsided, dimpled grin appearing. “You’re a formidable woman, Miss Adaptable.”

You didn’t make a big fuss about sitting down for that chat right away once you were back in Blayne. There was a lot to be done, especially around your new residence. You weren’t staying on the Jung’s property this time, even though you wished nothing more than to wake up in your bedroom at the homestead.

Instead, you were the first guests since 1983 to inhabit the inn.

“You sure there’s no ghost stories associated with this place?” Natalia queried as you both ate breakfast in the kitchen a few days after your arrival.

Grinning at your best friend, you shrugged. “Who knows? But if there are any more co-inhabitants here with us, they ought to pick up a broom and give things a good sweep or dusting.”

“We’ve been clearing cobwebs for days. How is this town going to be a hub of change, Y/N?”

“Nothing worthwhile comes without any effort, Natty. This place is kind of charming if you put aside its outdated décor.”

“Charming, you say,” she mentioned, pointing to the dripping tap in the kitchen. Even if the room now sparkled as best as it could from your combined cleaning, you still had repairs that were pressing.

“It could be very charming,” another voice mentioned, and you grinned at Avery’s cheeky appearance. “Sorry for intruding. The back door’s always been easy enough to get in through.”

“So it’s not just your cousin who’s good with getting in and out of places they shouldn’t be.”

“Where do you think I learned it from?” Avery admitted with an easy laugh, and after sending Natalia a wink, he placed a toolbox up on the countertop. “Leaky tap, huh? I guess I ought to fix this for you before it drives you nuts.”

“Will you?!” Natalia asked, graciously smiling in his direction. “It’s not the only one needing repairs, admittedly.”

“It’s a good thing I ran down to the hardware store a town over for some new faucets then, isn’t it?”

“Where’s Jaehyun?”

As he looked for the right tool, Avery answered. “On the ranch.”

“He okay on his own?”

“Sure, if you call being in the company of my grouchy uncle after us leaving Blayne last week caused him to get behind in work, being okay.”

“I actually have to go see Mr Jung today,” you announced and smiled at the pair who stopped staring flirtatiously at each other to look in your direction. “It’s time to get things rolling, don’t you think?”

“Will you be okay?”

“If Jaehyun’s handling his father, then I think I’ll go assist him. I’m half at fault here.”

“I don’t agree entirely with that, Y/N.”

Natalia agreed with Avery. “You aren’t at fault at all.”

“There’s a lot of things I want answers to and a whole lot of information I will need to pass on to him now that I’m here to work on the redevelopment of Blayne for housing.”

“He has a temper.”

“That much I’m aware of already, Avery,” you replied with a grin, picking up your coffee and raising it in a gesture of farewell. “Nat, you stay here and help point out the areas for Avery to work on.”

“Sure, I can do that,” she answered and turned to mouth a thank you at you.

Chuckling as you stepped outside and over to your car, you stopped when you saw Dorothy crossing the road towards you.

“Well, I’ll be damned. Everyone said you were back, but I didn’t believe it until these eyes of mine saw it in person!”

Taking her hand fondly, you cocked your head to the side. “Did you truly think you could get rid of me that easily?! I have work to do here!”

“Are you staying in the inn, Y/N? I’ll make sure to send my Jacob over to help with anything you might need repairing. Lord only knows how that place is holding up.”

Pointing to the building you had just departed, you smiled. “Avery is inside fixing some taps already.”

“Really? Well, he didn’t wait long. I thought everyone was instructed to stay put until Old Jung stopped punishing his boy for bringing you back.”

“Is that how everyone is seeing it?”

“Did I speak out of turn?!” Dorothy asked with a gasp, and you shook your head firmly.

“Not at all, Dorothy. I’m grateful for what you just said. Do let everyone know it was June Jung who I called in regards to returning to Blayne about, however. She’s the one who let me and my best friend into the inn, after all.”

“June?! She’s never the type not to follow along with her husband’s word!”

Shaking your head again, you patted her lower arm. “There’s a lot to Mrs Jung that Blayne folk seem to not know about.”

Greeting June when you arrived at her home shortly after, you grinned brightly at her. She laughed. “I was worried after a few nights in that inn you might decide to leave.”

“It’s nothing like the homestead, but I can see with some effort put in how it can help with our plans.”

“He’s not exactly thrilled.”

You nodded. “I doubt your husband is.”

“But he is listening. I told him to wait for you in his office. He gruffly headed in there five minutes ago.”

“I won’t keep him waiting then,” you assured June, smiling again before taking the same pathway you had a couple of weeks ago.

Inhaling a deep breath, you pushed forward into the office, Mr Jung looking up at you. You smiled politely. “It’s nice to see you again. In case you’ve forgotten, I’m Y/N, Blayne’s new town building specialist.”

Mr Jung ignored the hand you held out to him and cleared his throat but didn’t answer. Deciding to take his silence as not a complete refusal, you sat down across from him and pulled out the proposal you had drafted up for this meeting. And without any hesitation, you launched into it.

He didn’t interrupt your speech, even picking up the copy of the plans you had placed on the table midway through and flicked to the page you were talking about. By the time you reached the end of your planned speech, you were a mixture of relief and curiosity.

You had no idea what Mr Jung was thinking.

Heaving out a breath when you were finally done, Mr Jung nodded softly. “Very well.”

“Is that all?” you asked, and Mr Jung stared over at you. His gaze didn’t make you uncomfortable, rather, vulnerable. It was as if he was trying to pick a way into your brain and figure everything out about you.

Sighing when he didn’t seem to find whatever it was, Mr Jung looked out the window. “My family has been here for generations.”

“I looked into it when initially setting up here,” you confirmed, and he smiled swiftly.

“I suppose you know about my wife then.”

“I do. I believe it’s why she’s been supportive of my stay here.”

“She tells me that you remind her of herself. I don’t entirely see it, though I’m aged and weathered now. My son, however, he’s young.”

“We don’t have to discuss Jaehyun if you are going to berate and accuse me of-”

“My son is the next generation of the Jung family line. He’ll inherit this ranch when I leave this earth, and I hope his children in the future continue to help Blayne remain a fair and happy community. When June and I found we couldn’t have any further children, where I come from a line of ten, I foolishly believed if I shaped Jaehyun from an early age to take on this place, we would continue a successful line. My parents entrusted this ranch to me, the only son. Perhaps if I had daughters too, I would have softened. But I only had one child, and I was too harsh.”

“Why did the fire happen, Mr Jung?” you asked softly, and the man rubbed at his face before leaning back in his chair.

“I told Jaehyun he couldn’t ever leave Blayne. That kid is something else. He always has been. He’s good with the cattle, he’s even better upon a horse. His school got him into rodeo early on, and I thought it would only shape him to have a competitive streak to help our ranch. The first time I saw him do a run, I knew there was more to his riding, though. But he was only twelve then. Teenage years would come, and I assumed he would choose new interests, or feel the weight of the work around the yard. Jaehyun didn’t let go of the barrels and would train even at night if he had to. He never failed to do his chores first, and I grew exasperated that I couldn’t find a way to stop him.”

“As a parent, shouldn’t you encourage his pursuits?” you pointed out, and Mr Jung nodded loosely.

“I was real proud of my boy. He had more trophies and rosettes in that bedroom of his than he had anything else. When he got scouted, he was beaming from ear to ear. I was selfish. We didn’t have anyone to take his spot here if he was going to be away. My father preached to me about how this ranch has been handled by Jung hands for decades. What you assume I did next is correct.”

“You took him out of barrel racing.”

“I thought it was for the best. And then he ran away from home. He caused trouble for a few families here with their kids following him. Avery was almost sent to boarding school because May was worried Jaehyun corrupted him. I had a township to maintain the peace with too. So I took the wrong approach with Jaehyun and cornered him further.”

“Why a fire, though?”

“I told him his only place on earth was Blayne. He said he wished Blayne would stop existing. I didn’t think he’d actually do anything about it. But he broke into the theatre that night, and the fire quickly took hold of our town.”

You merely sat there, trying to battle through Jaehyun’s past anguish and understanding the father who carried deep remorse for his actions.

Mr Jung noticed and smiled sadly. “I tried to take the blame. After all, I had driven my son to choose that path. But the people knew better. So my only approach to Jaehyun, who was racked with guilt, was to use that to hold him here. He’s never thought of leaving or doing anything else.”

Mr Jung stared at you with an indescribable expression. “Until you arrived, Y/N.”

synopsis(no timeline separation):

elizabeth and her boyfriend josh decide to take the plunge and commit themselves to one another(“here i go”). lucas, having always been in love with her since college, feels…nOT GOOD. he and elizabeth contemplate alternate universes(“some other me”). elizabeth implores lucas to preserve their friendship—lucas agrees with that sentiment and they stay friends. one night, elizabeth and josh are at her apartment. she rushes into the bathroom, where she contemplates her past romances(stephen) and the fact that lucas is so heavily entangled in everything due to his feelings for her—in short, she recounts all her supposed fuck-ups(“what the fuck”). she remembers what stephen had told her years ago when he asked her to come with him to albany to do shit(“map of new york reprise”) she calls lucas, who promises that he will always be there for her despite/regardless of his feelings for her(“you don’t need to love me”).

josh notices that elizabeth is freaking out over her past failed relationships and attempts to reassure her with the oh-so popular maxim, “you never know”. liz, afraid of losing josh, she is still hesitant(“you never know”).

soon, they go meet david, josh’s best friend(and coincidentally/or not so, lucas is also there, since he tried to move on from elizabeth romantically and immediately became enamored with david when they met at a bar) who posits the fact that even if there’s the possibility that the two might lose each other somehow, that that possibility may occur, and she may be right, but even if she knew that would happen, would she want to give all that up due to a simple possibility(“what would you do?”)?

time skip! elizabeth is walking by a wedding(on east-tenth near lower broadway) when she feels the want to get married(“walking by a wedding”). she and josh get married that day(“this day”). it’s overall a very happy experience.

meanwhile, kate and anne, together for years but never married, feel their relationship weakening, kate in particular. kate finds anne flirting with well…everyone(anne claims it’s part of her nature but she still loves kate). kate just wants to get married. elizabeth, noticing this, attempts to help fix their relationship. it works. the two are stronger than ever after talking it out. who’da known?(“love while you can”)

lucas protests the redevelopment of the far west side project. the group joins in, contemplating and appreciating their interconnected relationships(“ain’t no man manhattan”).

josh wants to have a kid. he thinks of the experience he and elizabeth will have(“hey, kid”).

elizabeth tries to be more spontaneous and not wallow in the what if’s? she stops and says hey to a stranger.(“what if? reprise”)

elizabeth decides that her past life with oren is testament enough that she should start following her dreams. she gives her all to her job because she has no more time to waste. kate tells this story to her kindergartners, leaving elizabeth under the pseudonym “beth”(“no more wasted time”).

meanwhile, lucas and david take the plunge and lucas officially says “i love you” for the first time(“best worst mistake”)

time skip of like, some years. josh and liz have jake and coop now. after wallowing in the possibilities, as usual, elizabeth reflects and realizes that everyday’s a new chance to start over(“always starting over”).

kate tries to convince elizabeth that not everything’s in the possibility and signs exist. she presents the anecdote of a woman meeting a man in madison park(quite by chance, all at random, as it were) and then meeting him again in the subway, where they are currently. other subway passengers join in, for god knows what reason(“it’s a sign”).

josh is drafted. elizabeth’s mad. he goes. he dies. she’s sad(“i hate you”).

elizabeth imagines up a surprise birthday party where she’s actually pregnant and josh proposes to her(an au dream sequence before wbaw). everyone proposes to everyone else. kate proposes, lucas proposes. you’re getting married! you’re getting married! everyone’s getting married! and because of that josh doesn’t end up going to war at that specific point in time. she finds her life slipping into one of “liz” and one of “beth”; she struggles to hold the two together especially now since the main part of the “liz” portion, josh, is dead(“surprise”).

still in the dream sequence. she gets on a plane to go on a business trip but it has to make an emergency landing(“the moment explodes”). she thinks about all the people in her life. she revels in the wonder of nyc and how great her life is(“map of new york”). stephen is there for some reason…didn’t he move to albany? afterwards, she calls josh(“prologue”) just to say hi.

but then she realizes it was all a dream and comes back to the reality where josh is dead. she learns to grapple with that fact and live with it(“you learn to live without”).

aggrieved, she moves to phoenix with the kids. nine years later, she returns to new york city for good and meets kate and lucas, who individually ask her to go with them. this is where her life splits in two—liz(that’s what josh called her) when she goes with kate, and beth(homage to kate’s beth) when she goes with lucas. she’s still stuck in the possibilities(“what if?”).

The following are some of the abuses Muslims inflicted on Christians throughout the month of December, 2019; they are categorized by theme:

The Slaughter of Christians

Nigeria:  The Islamic State in West Africa Province released a video of the execution of 11 Christian aid workers on the day after Christmas.  The brief video shows one Christian being shot followed by 10 others being beheaded by masked jihadis standing behind the tied hostages. “This message is to the Christians in the world,” a man’s voice narrates over the footage. “Those who you see in front of us are Christians, and we will shed their blood as revenge for the two dignified sheikhs, the caliph of the Muslims, and the spokesman for the Islamic State [who were killed by the U.S.]”  Before being slaughtered, the captives reportedly made pleas, including to Nigeria president Muhammadu Buhari, to save them.  Buhari, who has himself been accused of turning a blind eye to the persecution of Christians in Nigeria—and even abetting it—condemned the executions, adding that “these barbaric killers don’t represent Islam.”

A separate report cited by Fox News found that more than 6,000 Christians have been slaughtered by Islamic terrorists since 2015—a thousand of them in just 2019.  According to the report,

They attack rural villages, force villagers off their lands and settle in their place — a strategy that is epitomized by the phrase: “Your land or your blood.” In every village, the message from local people is the same: “Please, please help us! The Fulani are coming. We are not safe in our own homes.”

The nomadic Fulani herdsmen “seek to replace diversity and difference with an Islamist ideology which is imposed with violence on those who refuse to comply,” Baroness Caroline Cox commented. “It is—according to the Nigerian House of Representatives—genocide.  Something has to change—urgently.  For the longer we tolerate these massacres, the more we embolden the perpetrators. We give them a ‘green light’ to carry on killing.”

Kenya: After armed Muslim militants stopped and stormed a passenger bus near the Somali border on December 6, they proceeded to separate the 56 passengers into Muslim and Christian groups—reportedly by asking them to recite the Islamic shahada (creed); 11 of those who would or could not due to their Christian faith, were paraded out of the bus. “They were told to lie on the ground face down and were shot at close range,” one report said. “The militants then ordered the bus to leave with the rest of the passengers.” The attackers apparently also relied on whether a passenger appeared to be local (meaning likely Muslim) or not (meaning likely Christian).  “The majority of the population in this region is Muslim,” Rev. Nicholas Mutua, a Catholic priest, explained. “The non-locals had come from other parts of the country and they would definitely have been Christians.” “One of the Muslim men gave me Somali attire, and when the separation was being done I went to the side of the Muslims, and immediately we were told to get [back] into the bus,” a survivor recalled. “As the locals were getting back into the bus, the non-locals who were left behind were fired upon with gunshots.”   Separating Muslims from Christians before slaughtering the latter has long been the modus operandi of Islamic terror groups.  In the Garissa University College massacre of 2015, when militants slaughtered nearly 150 people, a survivor explained how the Islamic terrorists burst into a Christian service, seized worshippers, and then “proceeded to the hostels, shooting anybody they came across except their fellows, the Muslims.”  Another witness said the gunmen were opening doors and inquiring if the people inside were Muslims or Christians: “If you were a Christian you were shot on the spot.  With each blast of the gun I thought I was going to die.”

Burkina Faso:  On Sunday, December 1, Islamic terrorists stormed a church during service and opened fire; 14 worshippers were killed and many injured.  The gunmen fled on motorbikes following the massacre.  Discussing this incident, a separate report offers statistics:

Burkina Faso’s Christian minority used to live in relative peace. Now the violence and persecution of Christians has quadrupled in the last two years and is expected to increase by [another] 60%…  Radical Islamic groups such as the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara and other local insurgents have pushed nearly half a million people from their homes.  Sunday’s attack comes after a Catholic priest was executed in February, five Christians were killed during an attack on a Church service in April, and 13 Christians were killed in a Church arson attack and procession in May. Most recently was on October 26 when unknown gunmen stormed a Christian village and reportedly killed 12 and abducted several others.

Cameroon:  In just the first half of December, Islamic militants “began an onslaught of attacks on Cameroonian Christians that left 7 dead and 21 captive to the terrorist group.”  According to the report:

On December 1, gunmen opened fire at a funeral in Mayo Sava district, in the far north of Cameroon. Four were killed and three were wounded. In another attack on the same day, militants ransacked homes and looted them of food and basic necessities. The next night, three more people were murdered and another was injured in another looting of Zangola village. A few days later on December 5, militants methodically searched for children and young adults and kidnapped them. In the middle of the night they came and stole nine girls and twelve boys from their homes, ranging from 12 to 21 years old. Four of the captives managed to escape. While en-route to their base, the Boko Haram militants attacked Tahert village where one girl was injured and a motorbike was stolen. Nearly 300 people have been killed in Cameroon in 2019 by Islamic militants, with 80% being civilians.

Pakistan: Naveed Masih, a 24-year-old Christian man was found hanging from a tree, dead, because he had earlier prevented Muslim men from harassing and pressuring a married Christian mother to convert to Islam.   Due to this, “a mob of 20 individuals attacked Naveed’s house,” the report says. “The mob beat Naveed and damaged many of the family’s belongings. The mob further threatened Naveed to not interfere with their efforts to convert the Christian woman.”  Two months later, he was lured to a supposed parley.  When he arrived at the meeting point, “he was brutally tortured and he was hanged from a tree as a result of protecting a Christian woman’s faith,” his father, Herbert, recalled:   “Carrying your son’s dead body in your arms is heartbreaking and unbearable.  It almost ended my life when I had to shoulder my son’s funeral….  My family is still under threats to withdraw the case against the culprits.  However, I have nothing to lose now.”

In a separate but similar incident in Pakistan, after sexually abusing him, two Muslim men killed Daud (“David”) Masih, a Christian teenager, on December 14 in a factory.  According to a local Christian activist, “Daud and his elder brother started working at the embroidery factory during the night shift about three months ago. They were additional breadwinners for the family as the mother is sick and their father is a day laborer.”  Weeks before the murder, Masih had complained about the “unethical behavior from his Muslim co-workers.”  Because the owner of the factory did not seem to care or intervene, Masih stopped going to work, until the owner assured him of protection.  He was abused and killed on the same day he returned to work; one of his murderers is allegedly the brother of the owner.  Last reported, the individuals accused of the crime have not been arrested and were pressuring and trying to bribe the victim’s family to drop the case:  “Although I am a poor Christian woman, I want justice for my son and punishment for those who killed Daud,” his mother said. “I will never go for compensation or reconciliation, as my son was killed brutally.”

Attacks on Churches

Philippines:  During Sunday Mass on the evening of December 22, Islamic terrorists detonated a bomb just outside Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Cotabato, a city on the island of Mindanao.  Twenty-two people were injured in the explosion, 12 of whom were soldiers patrolling the church as part of security measures adopted during the Christmas holidays.  Parish priest Zaldy Robles, who called it “a cowardly act on the eve of the Christmas celebrations,” said “casualties would have been unimaginable” had the bomb reached the inside of the church.  In 2009, a similar bomb attack on the same cathedral in Mindanao killed five people and injured 34.  Most of the Philippines’ Muslim minority live in Mindanao, which has been a hotbed of terrorism in recent years.  Among other attacks, “Islamic State-affiliated terrorists were blamed for twin suicide bombings at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cathedral in Jolo, Sulu Province on Jan. 27 [2019], which killed at least 22 people and wounded more than 100. Jolo is a small island off the coast of Mindanao.”

Iraq: The Catholic Church of Divine Wisdom in Baghdad, built in 1929, was invaded on the day after Christmas in what was described by one report as a “hostile takeover attempt”: “Details remain scarce. Security footage of the invasion show that an Islamic leader was present amongst the invaders, who attempted to open the gate and remove the cross.”  Later reports revealed that the church had been “marked for demolition by the authorities, together with some surrounding buildings, as part of a redevelopment programme in the city,” but that “local residents say the project is driven by commercial and political forces, and does not take into account the significance of the church for the community.”

Indonesia: Several reports appearing around Christmas indicated the difficulties churches experience during the holiday season.  In “Aceh Christians forced to celebrate Christmas in a tent,” the BBC reported on December 23 that:

Christians in the Indonesian province of Aceh are preparing to celebrate Christmas in makeshift tents in the jungle.  Their churches were destroyed four years ago by Islamic vigilante groups and the police.  Indonesia – the world’s largest Muslim population – has a pluralist constitution that is meant to protect the rights of followers of all the major faiths.  But Church leaders in Singkil Aceh say the local authorities are stopping them from rebuilding….

Separately, authorities on the Indonesian island of Sumatra banned Christians from celebrating Christmas in private homes.  According to Sudarto, the director of an intercommunity initiative, “They did not get permission from the local government since the Christmas celebration and worship were held at the house of one of the Christians who had been involved. The local government argued that the situation was not conducive.”  He added that the ban on Christians to celebrate Christmas and the New Year “has been going on for a long time [since 1985], so far they have been quietly worshiping at the home of one of the worshipers, but they have applied for permission several times. Yet the permit to celebrate Christmas was never granted. The house where they performed worship services was once burned down in early 2000 due to resistance from residents.”

Discussing yet another incident, the Jakarta Post reported on Christmas Day that “Christians in Jambi city, Jambi, still struggle to find joy on the eve of the holy day since the authorities sealed a number of local churches in the city….  Several Christians in the region were aghast when they were welcomed by a notice plastered on the closed front doors of the Assemblies of God Church (GSJA) informing them the church was sealed on Dec. 24, instead of the customary Christmas prayers and services.”  This church is among three churches in the area to be closed down by the Jambi city administration following protests by local Muslim residents who cited the lack of building permits.  “This is the second Christmas celebration to feel depressing for us,” said its pastor Jonathan Klaise on Christmas Eve.  “It’s a difficult situation. We have no other choice but to cope with it…  We can only hope that we will soon be able to pray in our church.”

Attacks on Muslim Converts (“Apostates”)  to Christianity

Uganda: A Muslim man with three wives abandoned one of them and their three children on learning that she had converted to Christianity.  Problems began for Florence Namuyiga, 27, when she took her eldest son, aged 7, to the church that she had been secretly attending following her conversion last May. “That evening, while back at home, my son began singing some of the Christian songs that were sung in the church,” she explained. “My husband began questioning me where the son picked such kinds of songs, but I kept quiet. He then turned to our son, who narrated what he saw in church of both men and women worshipping together in one big hall. Thereafter we went to bed with no communication with my husband.”  Then, on November 29, her husband, Abudalah Nsubuga, 34, insisted she to go to Friday mosque prayers.  “I refused,” she said. “He started beating me up with sticks, blows and kicks.

When I fell down, he left me and went to the mosque. I began bleeding with serious injury on my left arm. That evening he did not come to the house but slept in the house of one of my co-wives.”  On the next day,

He arrived [home] and pronounced [ritual Islamic] words of divorce and threatened to kill me if I remained in the homestead…  There and then I left the homestead, leaving all my belongings behind….  I have been supporting my three children by washing peoples’ clothing around the village.  Indeed life is quite difficult for me and the children. I have realized that following Jesus is not easy. Sometimes I spend sleepless nights thinking on my future and that of my small kids, especially their school fees.

Iran: On December 20, Mohammad Moghiseh, the head of Tehran Revolutionary Court, sentenced nine Muslim apostates to a total of 45 years in prison.  “These Christian converts have objected to the verdict issued by the Tehran Revolutionary Court and are awaiting final appeal,” the report states. The day before sentencing, on December 19, the US Treasury Department accused Mohammad Moghiseh and another Revolutionary judge of violating justice and abusing the rights of religious minorities and others.

General Abuse of and Discrimination against Christians

Tajikistan: A Christian pastor who was sentenced to three years in prison on the charge of “singing extremist songs in church and so inciting religious hatred,” was released on December 18, 2020, after serving two-and-a-half years.  In 2017, authorities had raided the Good News of Grace Protestant Church in Khujand. Many of the congregation were beat, lost their jobs, and faced other forms of repercussions in the wake of the raid on their church.  Pastor Bakhrom Kholmatov, a 43-year-old married father of three, was then sentenced on the aforementioned charges.  According to the report,

Officials claimed that Christian songs found on his computer and the book More Than a Carpenter by Josh McDowell are “extremist materials.” They alleged that religious “experts” recognised the songs Praise God, O Unbelieving Country, Army of Christ and Our Battle is Not Against Blood and Flesh as “extremist and calling people to overthrow the government.”

“I’d like to express my huge gratitude to all the people who supported and prayed for me, my family and my church,” Kholmatov said in a statement. “All these three years I felt your prayers, they helped me to stand, they helped my precious wife and children, they helped the members of my church who were left without a pastor, then kicked by the authorities out of our building.”

Iran:  “The Iranian regime has begun cracking down on evangelical Christians in Iran in the run-up to Christmas,” Al Arabiya reported on December 15. “Security officials routinely arrest Christian citizens during the Christmas season, according to the 2019 US Commission for International Religious Freedom report, which found the regime arrested 114 Christians during the first week of December in 2018.”   Dabrina Tamraz, who experienced persecution as a Christian before she managed to flee the Islamic republic nine years ago, shed light on the plight of Christians by recounting her own experiences:  “Christmas celebrations make it easier for Iranian authorities to arrest a group of Christians at one time,” said the escapee who currently resides in Europe.  During a family Christmas gathering in Tehran in 2014, “My brother opened the door only to be confronted with about 30 plain clothes officers who pushed their way in. They separated men from women and conducted strip body searches. Three people, including my father, were arrested and charged with acting against national security and conducting evangelism.”  The report adds that “The Iranian government considers evangelism—the sharing of the Christian faith—a criminal act.”

As another example of the persecution and discrimination Christians routinely experience around Christmas, the annual Armenian Christian market at Tehran’s Ararat Club, which was supposed to be held between Christmas Eve and the New Year, was canceled by officials.  According to that report,

In a situation where the economy is declining and the business market is sluggish due to the policies of the Islamic Republic … this cancellation for preventing ‘Christian propaganda’ is an irrational decision.  The cancellation of the market, which is a clear sign of discrimination and inequality, has received widespread criticism in the Armenian community… Every year on the eve of Christmas, pressure on the Iranian Christian community by various government agencies is increasing, including arresting Christian activists, obstructing the business of Christian sellers, even those who sell Christmas decorations!…  Christian compatriots are subject to double discrimination, whether in the labor market, employment, job position or in violating their right to run private businesses.

Pakistan:  “A 14-year-old Christian girl from Zia Colony, Karachi, was kidnapped, forcibly converted and married off to a Muslim man,” Asia Times reported on December 3. “Our daughters are insecure and abused in this country,” the mother of Huma Younus, explained. “They are not safe anywhere. We leave them at schools or home but they are kidnapped, raped, humiliated, and forced to convert to Islam.”  The eighth grade student was seen by neighbors being forcefully dragged into a car by three armed men.  “She was kidnapped by Abdul Jabar, a Muslim,” her father said.  After the girl’s family went to police, Jabar sent documents to the family over WhatsApp: “He asked us not to be worried for Huma as she is now his wife and has entered into Islam”; however, “the religious conversion documents are fake,” said the mother, noting that the date of the document of the 14-year-old’s alleged conversion is the same date of her abduction.  “My daughter’s life is in danger. She could be tortured or killed. I beg the authorities to recover my daughter as soon as possible.”   “Christian girls are being abused and forcefully converted,” Fr. Saleh Diego, Director of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Karachi, said while discussing this latest incident:

The kidnappers are misusing religion for their motives and spoiling the lives of hundreds of young girls from the marginalized Christian community….Huma must be recovered with no further delay. This unethical and illegal practice must also be stopped and the kidnappers of Huma and other girls must be brought to justice and punished for their crimes.

To date, police and courts have largely been unresponsive.  “Abducting for the purpose of forced conversion and marriage is a major issue in Pakistan,” Asia Times concludes. “Most of the victims are Christian and Hindu girls and young women, forced to wed against their will to much older Muslim men.”

United Nations: According to a December 4 CBN News report, “Christian Syrian refugees … have been blocked from getting help from the United Nations Refugee Agency … by Muslim UN officials in Jordan.” One of the refugees, Hasan, a Syrian convert to Christianity, explained that Muslim UN camp officials “knew that we were Muslims and became Christians and they dealt with us with persecution and mockery. They didn’t let us into the office. They ignored our request.” “Hasan and his family are now in hiding,” the report adds, “afraid that they will be arrested by Jordanian police, or even killed. Converting to Christianity is a serious crime in Jordan.”  Timothy, another Jordanian Muslim convert to Christianity, confirmed: “All of the United Nations officials [apparently in Jordan], most of them, 99 percent, they are Muslims, and they were treating us as enemies.”  Addressing this issue, Paul Diamond, a British human rights lawyer, elaborated:

You have this absurd situation where the scheme is set up to help Syrian refugees and the people most in need, Christians who have been “genocided,” they can’t even get into the U.N. camps to get the food. If you enter and say I am a Christian or convert, the Muslim U.N. guards will block you [from] getting in and laugh at you and mock you and even threaten you…. [saying]  “You shouldn’t have converted. You’re an idiot for converting. You get what you get,” words to that effect.

About this Series

The persecution of Christians in the Islamic world has become endemic.  Accordingly, “Muslim Persecution of Christians” was developed in 2011 to collate some—by no means all—of the instances of persecution that occur or are reported each month. It serves two purposes:

1)          To document that which the mainstream media does not: the habitual, if not chronic, persecution of Christians.

2)          To show that such persecution is not “random,” but systematic and interrelated—that it is rooted in a worldview inspired by Islamic Sharia.

Accordingly, whatever the anecdote of persecution, it typically fits under a specific theme, including hatred for churches and other Christian symbols; apostasy, blasphemy, and proselytism laws that criminalize and sometimes punish with death those who “offend” Islam; sexual abuse of Christian women; forced conversions to Islam;  theft and plunder in lieu of jizya (financial tribute expected from non-Muslims); overall expectations for Christians to behave like cowed dhimmis, or second-class, “tolerated” citizens; and simple violence and murder. Sometimes it is a combination thereof.

Because these accounts of persecution span different ethnicities, languages, and locales—from Morocco in the West, to Indonesia in the East—it should be clear that one thing alone binds them: Islam—whether the strict application of Islamic Sharia law, or the supremacist culture born of it.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today unveiled the 29th proposal of his 2020 State of the State: a $300 million plan to reimagine the Erie Canal by creating recreational activities on the Canal to boost tourism, mitigating flooding, enhancing irrigation and recreational fishing and restoring wetlands. The Governor is recommending the New York Power Authority Board, which now oversees the Canal Corporation as a subsidiary, approve the $300 million investment over the next five years at the board's January meeting.

"When the Erie Canal was created in the 19th century it set the state and the nation on a path to prosperity, and this year we will repurpose the canal to fit our state's 21st century needs," Governor Cuomo said. "This bold and visionary plan to transform this historic waterway will build on the success of the Empire State Trail, grow tourism across Upstate New York, improve resilience of today's Canal communities and ensure the economic sustainability of the waterway into the future."

A first phase of funding will start this year that will have two parts: a $100 million economic development fund to invest in communities along the Canal and a separate $65 million investment in solutions that will help prevent ice jams and related flooding in the Schenectady area.

The remaining $135 million of the plan's funding will subsequently be allocated to research recommended by the Reimagine Task Force, as well as to solutions related to flood mitigation, invasive species prevention and ecosystem restoration.

New Economic Development Fund for Canal Communities

In the first phase of the program, a $100 million economic development fund will support projects that adaptively reuse canal infrastructure to enhance water recreation, tie the Canal's new recreational improvements to the Governor's Empire State Trail, celebrate historic canal structures, and develop unique canalside attractions and activities. Roughly $25 million of that will be allocated immediately to a set of initial projects:

Connecting Communities: The "Brockport Loop" project in Monroe County will connect SUNY College at Brockport to the Empire State Trailand the village of Brockport through the transformation of a canal guard-gate into a pedestrian bridge and overlook, with a supporting grant of $2 million from the Ralph Wilson Foundation.

Celebrating "Iconic Infrastructure": Interactive, hydro-powered illumination of Canal "movable dams" - initially in Amsterdam and Canajoharie in the Mohawk River valley - will celebrate the Canal's heritage and its history as an engineering marvel.

Expanding Water Recreation: A new whitewater destination, at the north end of Cayuga Lake near Seneca Falls, will rely on existing water control infrastructure to construct an active water sports course adjacent to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, to increase eco-tourism and sport visitors to the region.

Adapting Industrial Property for New Uses: Winner of the Reimagine the Canals competition, a canalside pocket neighborhood, will be developed by Madison County in Central New York at a former industrial property in Canastota along the Old Erie Canal - demonstrating a new model for 21st century canalside living.

Developing Destination Accommodations: The historic Guy Park Manor, on the Mohawk River in Amsterdam, will be reborn as a hospitality destination and a pedestrian bridge constructed across the already-existing Canal lock will provide access to additional overnight accommodation along the Empire State Trail on the opposite side of the river.

Well this sounds pretty good to me.  The Erie Canal has already been focus of new historical parks along the New York Thruway, and the parkland around many of the canal’s locks is among the most pleasant recreational sites in the state.  Boating and biking along the canal are well-established recreational activities. But enhancing & redeveloping the historic communities along the canal, some of which are in dire need of investment, is an initiative that’s long been needed, IMHO.

It’s not coddling developers. It’s a mix of encouraging developers to build more supply for families (and not just “hip singles”) and state sanctioned tax benefits and public housing. The current problems in the USA (and to an extent in Canada) are zoning and parking minimums which have largely made traditional developments not financially feasible. Walk around many older American cities and you will see courtyard apartments, quadplexes, duplexes, wallups, brownstones, or other forms of higher-density developments. In the USA, it has become so onerous to build that the only profitable ways to build are housing developments on the periphery (i.e. suburbia) or LARGE luxury properties inside cities. What we are missing is the framework to build what a lot of urbanists call “the missing middle.” In many American cities, the types of housing I just listed above have been either illegal or too expensive to get any return on investment on. So yeah, I see the criticism. In certain cities (especially LA, SF, DC and NYC) the development we do see is all luxury, large buildings. But why wouldn’t it be when everything else is untenable? This is the issue at hand. To make matters worse, there are neighborhoods in Los Angeles zoned for single-family home construction NEXT TO METRO STATIONS. That is unacceptable and elitist if ever there was a case. And look at where the Red Line terminates in North Hollywood! It’s a GIGANTIC parking lot in the middle of a city of 4million people. That could be converted into parks, housing, shops and workspaces for thousands of people. Instead its parking... Which also places a cap on the utility of having a metro station nearby, one of the most efficient and high-capacity ways of getting around we have in our toolbox.

Bulldozing neighborhoods? This is the problem in places like San Francisco where white liberals are more interested in “preserving the view of the bay” and “maintaining the character of the neighborhood” than they are of building more housing to accommodate folks that need homes. I agree, but the bulldozing of neighborhoods largely already happened during the freeway construction boom of the post-war period through the 90s. Some cities are smartly demolishing these freeways and restoring neighborhoods. In San Francisco, there have been proposals to redevelop industrial areas in the old harbor areas into housing districts. These too have been controversial for some of these reasons (THE VIEW OF THE BAY :’(  ) and it’s just... so silly! Very few live in these industrial areas, so now we throw in people who don’t even live in a largely useless area as it currently is preventing change because they take their tea on the porch and don’t wanna risk seeing different buildings in the distance? I can never grapple with this way of thinking when even the most inoffensive way of adding housing to our cities seems to get people up in arms. Maybe we are too used to our suburban way of life and are trying to replicate that in cities? idk. But we gotta find a way to change this mindset. 

There are also ways to radically increase density without “harming the character” or building giant skyscraper blocks. Many European and Asian cities demonstrate this. Paris is famous for its 19th century apartment blocks that essentially quadruple capacity of a city block and create the situation that Paris intra-muros is about as dense as Manhattan, while only having a few skyscrapers at all. 

To further my point, I will again point to France, which is the only capitalist country that kept up housing pace against communist peer nations in the post-war while also continuing to add housing in urban centers. Of course, France has a ton of problems, particularly in the Paris suburbs, but those are slowly being addressed. Paris is currently adding 60,000-80,000 new units of housing per year with the Grand Paris project. Many of these units are built by private developers, and many are subsidized or built directly by the state. In addition, the state is funding the construction of over 200km of new metro to better connect existing neighborhoods throughout the region, expanding the RER (an express regional commuter system), as well as new light rails and rapid bus lines to further these goals. This is partly why the Paris region remains much more affordable than London, which is not too far away and struggling to keep up. You can also compare it to New York. Just googling, I’ve found several studio apartments for rent for under 600€ in the 14th arrondissement. They are even cheaper if you’re willing to live near an RER station outside of the city proper. Looking at places near NYC, not at all comparable. Yes, Grand Paris has its detractors, particularly those that don’t want power to continue concentrating in the capital city, but, the results seem to be speaking for themselves and Paris is actually trying to fix many of its problems with inequity and poor orbital area transport whereas we’re still having stupid fights here. Metro and RER stations are more and more becoming important nodes in the urban fabric even on the periphery and building around these new stations will provide the housing the region needs as it sustains growth. And France is the example that is not kind to developers and has lots of state involvement. If you want another radical proposal, look to Japan which has state centered urban planning. Zoning doesn’t exist as it does in the USA, which means a family house in Tokyo can be torn down and replaced by 20 apartment units without the years of public hearings we have to deal with here. You will see plenty of urbanists point to Japan as the ideal way to handle these issues as Japan handles housing prices far better than the USA and UK are currently. I personally prefer the French model, but that’s me. Just trying to give another example that is far more friendly toward developers that has been shown to work. 

So yes, lets not coddle developers, but also realize the USA has a 30 year backlog of construction, and not the government nor developers can alone rise to meet this challenge without radical changes and playing every card we have. Even more concerning is I read some months ago that there simply are not enough construction contractors and workers in LA County to even keep pace with some of the CURRENT construction, let alone what we need to be adding to our current stock to make cities more habitable and affordable.
