Yes I think that Katniss reminded Snow of Lucy Gray, but more than that I think Katniss represented to him exactly what he feared most about Lucy Gray: the power of love, hope, and resiliency. Katniss isn’t the ghost of Lucy Gray, she is the descendant raised on the mockingjay song. She is the child of the woods of District 12, the daughter of a miner with a voice like honey, the daughter of a healer. If Snow is a jabberjay then Lucy Gray is a mockingbird. One a product of the Capitol, the other born of the wood, whose legacies shape the rebellion to come, whose actions however indirectly or accidentally have a hand in shaping part of who Katniss is and what she is forced to face. Something the Capitol can’t control. A mockingjay.

Two statements can and should coexist:

1. The Hunger Games movie adaptations are kind of reproducing the very "violent spectacle as mass entertainment/fascist or capitalist propaganda" that the books are warning us about.

2. The books were always published for entertainment purposes! They're meant to be good and fun to read and gripping! It's okay to laugh when a character makes a joke! It's okay to enjoy watching the movies without following it with a Communist Manifesto-sized warning like we KNOW

A really interesting ongoing theme this campaign is that of creatures who commit violence not out of malice but out of their nature, and how those creatures should be treated. I think a really obvious and major one is the Gorgynei and their approach to lycanthropy: those who can take the Hunter's Bane are expected to do so. Those who can't withstand it use various other techniques to control their urges or are tied up when they transform. It's not seen as a flaw or a sign of evil; but it is seen pragmatically, as a potential source of harm to be reduced.

We see it with the Bari Mondolo; Jirana describes it as having no malice, simply wanting to eat. At the same time, she does repeatedly drive it off the island and into the sea. She doesn't just let it eat Bells Hells, or the native wildlife.

This feels like a strong hint about Predathos, to me. If it's operating out of malice then the choice is clear; but if it's simply hungry...that doesn't mean you have to let it eat whatever it wants, as an invader from another realm, and to go back to the Bari Mondolo, but if Jirana had kicked it off the island and someone else threw it back because they wanted it to eat Bells Hells, we'd pretty unambiguously understand that person was being a massive dick.

"Angry robin" "violent robin" "misbehaving robin" shut up and accept my alternative; spunky Robin. Determined and head strong, can out-stubborn the Batman, has a strong moral-backbone and does what he thinks is right regardless of what anybody else says, Robin. Jason who was sassy and quippy and made crude jokes with a smile on his face. Jason who hid in Bruce's cape and whispered gossip to him. Jason who, if Bruce refused him something, could keep bothering endlessly until Bruce caved. And also dramatic Jason. If Bruce tells him no, it becomes a whole theatrical show; a monologue, a narration, embellishments, and falling onto the floor in his grief upon the fact his cruel father has denied him once again.

(Jason who has suffered through abuse and homelessness and poverty and starvation, who is the Fight out of Fight or Flight, who's built up defenses and walls and when pushed and triggered responds with the thing that's always protected him; anger. He's sweet and kind and funny, and when he sees a pimp hitting a prostitute he gets furious and responds with violence.)

having a lot of thoughts about weeping scope and what the design means for levi’s character. more under the cut because it gets LONG. brief cw for a levi-typical drug reference in the second bullet point

two major things i’m focusing on here which are the fact that weeping scope is entirely nude and the obvious giant gun growth. which are kind of the only two things he has, so it’s the only two things to focus on. anyway.

i wouldn’t really point this out since funger is funger but most of the other moonscorched forms do have some form of clothes. weeping scope is ass naked though. he’s completely exposed and has nowhere to hide.

- someone else pointed out in a fic that his jumpsuit covers everything except for what really matters (the track marks on his arms) and while obviously that’s not entirely relevant to weeping scope it’s still. that theme of exposure

- additionally the lack of genitalia/hardened over area where genitals would be — again considering how funger loves gratuitous nudity, big thing here that levi Doesn’t have anything there. (you could take this as trans coding but i feel like they would’ve been more obvious about it considering marina, but regardless) there’s a lot of conclusions to be drawn from that but i think the most noticeable is how the game does go out of its way to hammer in that he’s still a kid. he’s hit puberty (mostly) he’s 18 but he’s still a scared child. underdeveloped. etc

something i noticed when going through the enemy list (confession: i haven’t played funger yet because i do not have the right computer. sad.) is that it resembles the platoon enemy in structure and texture which is actually pretty interesting considering the platoon’s nature as a not-very-sentient weapon despite the fact that it is specifically described as a moonscorched human. that’s slightly off topic but i don’t think the texture resemblance between weeping scope’s gun and the platoon body is a coincidence

- what i’m literally thinking about irt the gun being Fucking Huge is the fact that it’s oversized and how that relates to being a child soldier. his main gun itself (rifle) is also very very long. too long for his tiny malnourished ass. it’s huge and unwieldy and

- takes over the entirety of where his head used to be. he literally has no way to think anymore. it’s just gun. no head. no thoughts. just gun and obviously fear and sobbing because even when less than human he’s reverted to extensions of both sides of himself: the terrified child and the mindless soldier. all he can do is cry and shoot. all he can do even as levi is cry and shoot (it’s all he’s good for, it’s all he’s meant for — while it’s a funny interaction, i do think about the segment in prhvl bop where he plays the piano and says it’s too late for his life to change trajectory [how old are you?] 18) — but it’s. so much more obvious and inescapable as weeping scope

i totally understand why people are exhausted by characters (esp female characters) revolving around a romance. but sometimes love is important to the story. it’s important the character experiences it. important that they choose love and happiness.

sometimes love is a major part of their story. sometimes it isn’t reducing a character to say that love is important. sometimes it gives them more depth. sometimes ignoring and disregarding the love woven into their stories makes them weaker characters

i know haymitch lied to katniss and peeta about their role in the rebellion, but throughout the entire series, i think the single worst thing he does is the “more boy trouble?” comment near the end of mockingjay.

she was literally just a tribute in two games and the face of the rebellion, none of which by choice. she lost her home. lost her sister. and he reduces it to boy trouble. what an infuriating comment from an older male mentor.

i think a lot of people have never been in a truly desperate situation but think they have, and this causes them to pass really harsh judgment on people who made bad choices when either irrational or having no good choices to pick instead, and i really wish people could get some fucking self-perception and work on their compassion skills and not fucking do that as much anymore

It will be fine because it always is but it is so exhausting sometimes to have a dog that just won’t thrive. Before her spay, Hallow was doing great w/r to her eating and GI problems- the food was working great, she had a fantastic appetite for just her kibble, she hasn’t had any GI episodes in nearly 6 months, which is huge for her. Since her spay she has gone back to refusing to eat pretty much anything. I understand that she’s going through huge hormonal changes. She also has been on antibiotics since her surgery because the incision got infected, and once that was resolved, she had a reaction to the internal sutures dissolving (which this is another thing, of COURSE her recovery was shitty because why not), so I’m sure her stomach is a bit off from that.

I would do anything for her, but the constant worrying is exhausting and I don’t know why she can’t be a dog who just… dogs, without having to constantly help her not crash and burn. It’d be one thing if it was just be having to give her daily massages and take her to weekly PT for the rest of her life but that’s only the half of it.
