GENERAL PREMISE: mob & tome run a psychic business together, focus is on investigating supernatural phenomena. reigen is a shithead little kid who talked his way into becoming an employee, but they only really let him sweep the floors until he starts complaining, at which point he gets one (1) adventure per week.

MOB: because reigen wasn’t around to keep her from joining the telepathy club, she joined without protest or thought, but she and tome ended up getting along well enough that they became close friends. her egg cracked in high school, and she’s now a shy and withdrawn adult woman. doesn’t have as much of a sense of personal style, though if someone pays attention they might notice her tendency towards things with cute (& a little obnoxious) graphics. avoids using her psychic powers as much as possible because she never worked through her trauma regarding them, so every time she does use them they have a tendency to become really out of control. a pretty blunt sense of humor. she handles most of the “psychic” part of the job (so she does mind readings, future telling, and very basic exorcism), but most of this is “practice reading people”, something she still struggles with, and isn’t actually power based.

TOME: excitable and impulsive adult. worked a variety of shitty minimum wage cashier jobs until she snapped and begged mob to open the psychic business with her. her preference is field work, exploring haunted houses & investigating strange phenomena. has a strong (if occasionally incomprehensible) internet presence. a tendency to rope people into things without really asking if they’re okay with it, which she’s aware of and can occasionally feel guilty about. not a role model except for her zest for life. has never met aliens and desperately desperately wants to. still keeps in touch with the other telepathy club members, who have thrived in normal office jobs and don’t want to quit and join her shady ghost hunting business for some reason????

TERU: got in a fight with mob in middle school (again, mob didn’t have reigen to preach nonviolence so mob just kinda. wiped the floor with him lmao). teru holds the BIGGEST grudge about it and mob barely remembers it. nowadays, an incredibly popular tv psychic (haters will say its cgi) who is super popular with teenage girls and stay at home moms alike. because mob didn’t have her nonviolence rule, she wasn’t pushed to her breaking point and instead just one-hit KO’ed him, so he didn’t completely lose his dignity as a child, but he did take a hit to his ego and lost his middle school friends. he then rebuilt his following in high school, but also doesn’t really have friends, just lackeys.

RITSU: mob’s estranged brother. they never worked through their complexes regarding each other, so they grew apart and have barely spoken since they moved out of their parents’ place. now a successful office manager and utterly bored with life; going up the corporate ladder out of momentum if nothing else. allies with dimple out of boredom, and is actually more gung-ho about starting a cult than dimple is.

TOICHIROU: BABY TYRANT. runs salt middle school like it’s the fucking navy. aspirations of grandeur, wants to rule the world and frankly would do it tomorrow if he could. student council president, hand picked the rest of the student council (the rest of the super 5). uses psychic powers for intimidation

SERIZAWA: an anxious middle schooler who towers over everyone. his official title is “student council vice president”, his actual role is “hired muscle and toichirou’s yes-man” (yes-boy?). he considers the rest of the super 5 his friends, but doesn’t really know what friendship is. still has the umbrella. he and reigen end up becoming friends by accident, and reigen helps him break toichirou’s hold over him and basically enlists him into working for tome & mob.

DIMPLE: i’m gonna be real dimple is hard to ageswap because he’s like, 100 years old or whatever. so dimple is mostly unchanged, still running scams in an attempt to become god, which keeps not working out for him. this is his 100th attempt, and this time ritsu gets roped in - and might actually be better at running a cult than he is????

SHOU: toichirou’s HUMILIATING dad. maybe a little too lax about the whole “my son wants to rule the world” thing. also a powerful psychic, but only ever uses his powers to complete very mundane tasks, which toichirou views as a waste. unmarried, toichirou’s mom was a one-night-stand and has asked to be out of the picture, which shou is fine with. 

MOGAMI: world weary at the age of 14. former golden child. discovered he was a powerful psychic very young, and used this power to help others. however, this quickly turned into him being consistently taken advantage of, and after a particularly bad incident, he became jaded and withdrawn. has some kind of history w dimple (disrupted one of his cults a year or two ago?). also watches teru’s show and thinks he’s a fucking hack

The weird part about not being born psychic—by specifically gaining psychic powers via power transference and sheer dumb luck—is that it put the sheer difference between Reigen Arataka and the other psychics invited to do the Asagiri job in stark contrast. They were well-established in their field and he was...well he was flashy. That was about it.

(Dimple said he was likely an empathetic specialist, considering how easily he could read feelings from auras and how easily he could push his feelings onto others, but empathy alone wouldn't get him far in the business now would it?)

Regardless of the difference between himself and the others in power, Reigen had two advantages over them. The first was his prowess in rock-paper-scissors. The second was sheer charisma. All the regular psychics surrounding him, bigwig names from places like the Rising Sun Psychic Union, independent contractors and whatnot, were all work and no play. With names like Asagiri, there needed to be a hint of showmanship to the work. Otherwise it looked like horseshit and rich men didn't pay for horseshit.

Reigen was good at gilding horseshit so it looked valuable. That would carry him far, here specifically.

Asagiri Minori looked like a real brat. Whatever had changed in her—and he wasn't buying the others' muttered theories of puberty—it made her dangerous enough to strap down and Reigen wouldn't discount that caution on her father's behalf. Plus something about the way she looked out at everyone—as if she was studying them despite the glass she wasn't supposed to see through—made him on-edge. It made his hair stand up.

Something was wrong with Asagiri Minori.

As Reigen entered the room Minori was kept in, his hackles raised again. Still, he schooled his face into a calm placidity and nodded at her. "Hello there, Miss Asagiri."

Her cracked lips—dehydrated and bitten, ashen and split—parted as she moved to meet him, held back by the straps on her arms and legs. She jerked at the length of her restraints and met his eyes, tears starting to form in her own. "You need to help me," she begged, voice like dry leaves and burning paper, "Daddy said I could leave but he's lying. He always lies to everyone!"

"Do you know why your father put you in here? Why he tied you down?" Reigen was testing the water, feeling for any kind of errant aura hidden by her terrified words.

"It's because I won't do what he asks of me any more! He doesn't understand I'm a growing girl." Minori rattled her restraints and tried to get to the door. When that didn't work, she began crying, silently sobbing, jagged fingernails clawing at her face. "He keeps bringing adults in."

Reigen knew that, while he couldn't see or hear anyone outside, they could see and hear in. What Minori was saying was probably stirring up unease and distrust. Nobody out there knew to look past surface level.

"What are these adults brought here for?" Reigen sat down on the edge of the bed, out of reach of her hands. In the off chance she lashed out, he didn't want to be too close if she wanted his eyes. "The ones your father brings in to see you."

"They touch me. When I fight back they pin me down, strip me, and touch me all over. Father watches. He doesn't make a move to stop them. He wants his baby girl back so he'll do anything it takes." Minori's wild eyes flicked left, then back at Reigen, her greasy hair framing her face in matted chunks. "Please, mister psychic, you have to help me. I'm not possessed! He's lying! He's the one who's possessed. You have to believe me!"

Reigen swallowed bile and gave Minori a placating smile. His skin crawled as he nodded at her. "Of course," he lied, "I believe you. I'm here to help."

"That's what they all say!" She wails, drawing blood from her face. Reigen forces himself to not recoil, to play it safe, pretend at sympathy and let a little horror seep through, just in case.

Something was definitely wrong with Asagiri Minori and now he had an inkling of what it was.

Reigen had built his business model around one that already existed. Long before he knew psychics were real and that ghosts and curses could kill you, a younger, dumber Reigen decided he would imitate the first ever TV psychic to make it big—Mogami Keiji's—style and mannerisms. It would buy him credibility in the world and, really, who remembered a TV psychic from two decades ago? That meant hours and hours of watching old video tapes of his show, combing over every case and every intricacy.

While his aggressive hand motions were...exaggerated from the source material, most of the rest of how Spirits and Such operated was near identical to Mogami's own ways of working.

Minori's mannerisms reminded Reigen of this one episode he saw of a young possessed boy. The boy would flip between placid and pathetic to raging and manic in an instant, pretending to be a scared child one second and throwing things with enough force to break them the next. There was blood on his hands and claw marks on any exposed piece of skin. Self-inflicted bruises to sell it better.

It was a horridly powerful spirit, or so Mogami had said. Without any spiritual sensitivity, Reigen couldn't tell if the exorcism was real or not—and nowadays those tapes went for five or more zeros, assuming you didn't just find a bad rip of it online on a weird occult web circle—but the way the boy thrashed and screamed, body moving as if something was puppeting his limbs about always stuck with him.

So did the way the boy's speech patterns were inconsistent.

Reigen might not be a good esper, but he was an excellent conman. Minori—or whatever was using her body—might be good at erasing their presence, but they were a dogshit actor.

The room outside of Minori's little box was a furious mess. Various psychics were yelling, their agitated energies filling the room with a silt-black swamp of emotions. Asagiri was being beaten back verbally, the idiots yelling at him about how he treated his poor daughter.

The only people who weren't in a tizzy were Mob, Ritsu, Teru, and Dimple. Well, scratch Dimple. He looked like he was going to pass out, more green about the gills than he'd ever seen the spirit before. He kinda reminded Reigen of a small, scared dog.

As he left the room, one of the Rising Sun goons passed him on his way in. Reigen tried not to bristle from the shock of mirror green distaste that radiated off the man, flecks of carmine pride sharp pepper spikes against his nature. Reigen hoped that the thing in Minori didn't hurt the man.

Everyone was looking at him now, as the one who spent time with Minori first. "Well, I'll say this much," Reigen sighed with enough force to hurt, trying his best to get his emotions across, shoving his aura against the energy of the room to try and infect them with his calmer unease, "I can't sense anything."

An eruption of noise nearly bowled him over again, everyone clamoring to agree with him, to accuse Asagiri of selling his daughter's body, to complain about the waste of their time. Reigen had to just grimace at their unprofessional actions.

"I didn't say everything was fine. Sheesh." Reigen rapped his knuckles against the wall near the window. He rolled his eyes as everyone looked back at him. "Something's definitely wrong with her."

"You believe me?" Asagiri looked like he was going to cry.

"Of course." Honestly, the way these half-baked idiots treated the client. What a terrible work environment. He bet their Mobble reviews were abysmal for their bedside manner alone.

My Anime Top Ten

It’s been about six months since I posted my last top 10, and I have watched A LOT of content. So here is my current top ten as of April, 2022 :)

10. Komi Can’t Communicate

The more anime I watch, the more I realize I gravitate to feel good shows. This show made me so happy. The art style was satisfying, the characters were great, and the story was so adorable. I can’t wait for season two to come out! Plus, the opening was such a bop. 

9. Mob Psycho 100 

The message of this show was great. Also, the mentor/mentee relationship between Mob and Reigen made me laugh. Mob is so precious and I would protect him with my life. I wish only the best for him during his endeavors. 

8. Fruits Basket

This show is really sold on the rewatch. You see how the relationships come together, you pick up on details you missed, you understand the story better. Momiji continues to be the best character. Mad props to Fruits Basket for ACTUALLY BEING A COMPLETE SERIES. I’m looking at you, every other romcom in history. 

7. Barakamon 

On my previous list as well, this show is the absolute sweetest. Happy feelings, happy vibes, sweet, sweet serotonin baby. Wholesome as fuck. To live on a beautiful island and work on your art surrounded by your found family. Oh yeah baby it’s all coming together. 

6. Kamisama Kiss 

Once again, may I bring your attention to Tomoe. Such a great concept. Need me a familiar. In any case, this romcom remains my favorite. Nanami is such a fun main character, and I will love the opening until the day I die. 

5. Attack On Titan 

Top five bby! This show continues to keep me on the edge of my seat. Catch me watching the Final Season part 69 in the nursing home. I do miss the old art style tho. 

4. Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun 

Still the best. I wish there were a million episodes of their shenanigans. I would pay top dollar. 

3. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. 

If you know me IRL I’ve probably tried to get you to watch this one. It’s what got me hooked on anime, and I’ve been chasing that high ever since. 

2. HunterxHunter 

Still absolutely in love with this show. Rewatching it as I type. It’s so sweet seeing the gang get together again and again. I love the zoldycks, I love the phantom troupe, I love bisky, I love my sons, Gon and Killua. Sweet sweet boys, one may be an assassin but oh well. 

1. Haikyu

Ladies, gentlemen, and nonbinary friends, we made it. This show is peak happiness to me. The humor is my humor, the triumphs are so relatable, the growth is inspiring. It has become my comfort show. I love these volleyball boys.

Anime I've Binged: August 2021

I've been crafting a lot recently because I wanna get my yarn work done before it gets cold so LOTS OF ANIME lmao let's gooooo

The Case Study of Vanitas: On god, this anime is gorgeous. Still being upload as it's a new seasonal, but it's a Yen Press distributed work by the same mangaka of Pandora Hearts and Crimson Shell so it's STYLISTICALLY GORGEOUS. The story is interesting and feels new but familiar enough to have guess, people who like men AND women will have something for them, and Noè is my baby boy, my heart, my lovely little lamb, the sweetest green bean on the planet <3. Can't wait for the (eventual, as told on the first episode) death of Vanitas by Noè's hands that will crush me <3. 9/10.

Oddtaxi: I was NOT EXPECTING this anime to be THAT GOOD. Oddakawa is the MVP. You think you're getting a slice of life anime with some furry elements and instead you get Paranoia Agent meets Yakuza and went to school with Beastars. Genuinely one of the best anime of the coming decade. The last 30 seconds of the last episode legitimately left me screaming and my brother had to ask me what was wrong. 11/10.

The Slime Diaries: The offshoot for That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime full of shorts while the second half of the second season was put on hiatus due to covid. Cute, bubbly, but the drawing styles for everyone was a little too off for me to entirely enjoy. However, the extra background and time they gave to all the characters really fleshed them out and gave them more depth so you have more to care about when you're watching the main series again. Not bad, pretty cute, but you won't understand unless you've watched all the way up to the middle of the Second Season. 8.5/10.

The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist: Another Light Novel Slice of Life Isekai given life, I've seen better but this one isn't bad by any means. It gives you exactly what it says on the tin, with NO annoying fan service or gross (bad) harem dynamics. Pretty cute tbh. 8/10.

Mob Psycho 100 S1: The animation is INCREDIBLE. OH MY GOD. Story was solid, depictions of original characters was GREAT and Mob is my beautiful little boy I want to wrap up in a blanket and put to sleep <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Reigen is a sweaty, sweaty gross goblin I found outside the Denny's dumpster at midnight and decided "ahh, yes, a man who is perfect to destroy and objectify all at once." 11/10.

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S1, S2, and Shorts: I'm gonna be real, I'm a mad lesbian who knew I was gonna be disappointed by what I wanted but knew I wasn't gonna get it. STILL super cute tho. Lucoa and Shota gave me HARD SIDE EYE VIBES THO. Tits. Tits for days. Not my favorite but I've seen worse. 7.5/10.

How to Keep a Mummy: SO CUTE genuinely went online to see if I could buy a plushie before remembering I have crafting power and twelve dollars. Slice of Life featuring an adorable cast of high schoolers and their supernatural pets. 8.5/10. I couldn't stop being delighted by how CUTE everything was <3

Elegant Yokai Apartment Life: A Slice of Life Turned Plot-ish about if Tohru from Fruits Basket was a guy and shoved in an entire apartment complex full of supernatural beings, with less explicit romantic plotlines. It's not bad but the plot is all over the place and nonsensical in the the "why did the writer think this was a good idea" way and not the "lol" way. It was a Light Novel turned published piece tho so that clears up a lot of things. Incredibly small internet presence so if you want the world's tiniest fandom, try here. 8/10.

Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average In the Next Life?!: Another in the long line up of isekais and light novels that have gained an audience, this is honestly one of my favorite of the Isekais I've watched so far. It's fun, humorous, and it's got the decent premise of "oh yeah, I'm average in all my abilities! ... If you compare them from the tiniest bug to the strongest dragon alive." It's busty jokes and certain dried up cliches are abound tho, so some of the humor falls flat. That being said: the magic is run on nanomachines. That alone gives it enough premise for me to watch it. I watched the dub which I'll admit isn't amazing, but worked for me. 8.5/10

Restaurant to Another World: Another Light Novel adaptation but this one was a much earlier one that was published a few years ago, it's so calm that I like watching it to fall asleep to. That being said, don't watch this while hungry! Or watch it while eating leftovers! Because THE FOOD LOOKS SO GOOD I WANT IT D: Lol but serious it's pretty cute, really normal, there's no plot, I almost hesitate to call this anything other than a fantasy slice of life show instead of just a series of shorts strung together to make a show. I want to eat at Restaurant Nekoya TTuTT 8/10

How NOT To Summon a Demon Lord: I got 6 episodes in before I straight up could NOT take the fan service anymore. Literally, I watched 5 1/2 episodes, paused about 4 months, gave it one last shot and watched the 6th episode, and then called it quits. It's SO GROSS IT MAKES ME NAUSEOUS. Not in a gorey way (which is preferable tbh) but in "all these hyper-sexualized, assaulted, groomed, fan serviced girls are underage or are lolis" way. Ew. Gross. I refuse. I made myself watch PRISON SCHOOL but smth about this show just... made itself unwatchable. Maybe how it's still trying to make the MC seem like a normal dude and in Prison School they were literally all written to be unlikable and everyone knew it was fucked up. Shigeo

He starts with creative mode, just to get the gist of it, before finally heading into survival but on peaceful. Then he’ll do survival easy mode and just stay on that tier forever, until he feels more confident to up his game a little higher.

Only played because Telepathy club was playing and he heard the word “Mob” and was like; “Did you call me?” and the club goes “nah fam, it Minecraft.” “what’s Minecraft.” Boom he plays.

Most likely to have a farm with a lot of cows

Has a dirt house/villager’s house on the first night and stops at just that.

Not much of a great builder

Takes forever to get diamonds

Dies often, but not too much. Just often enough for him to lose a few good iron pickaxes.

Always goes to bed once it’s night.

Most likely to have a pet cat

He just plays for fun, when he’s bored and stuff. So he doesn’t go as far as to defeating the ender dragon. He’ll travel to the nether though, just for potion making

He can build, but he’s pretty amateur at it, he’s a fast learner though so he could easily replicate houses he see online

He’s the type of guy that never stops mining until he finds diamonds, which means he makes sure he’s at 13-11y in coordinates, has a shit ton of extra pickaxes, and stacks upon stacks of torches. Once he finds them goodies, he heads on home and repeats the cycle

He’ll defeat the ender dragon if he’s bored enough or when someone challenges/pays him to.

Same goes with The Wither

Will skip Minecraft sleep very often and will only go to bed when the phantom starts attacking

Most likely to have many many pet dogs, each one of them have name tags.

When he dies, he gets mad for a few hours, then jumps right back in. He doesn’t die all that often though, so he won’t rage quit.

He gets the minecraft books later on and you can see him reading it under his table time to time

Ritsu

He starts off with easy or normal without much knowledge on the game, probably only played because Shigeo introduced him to or Shou bugged him about it.

He’ll have a farm, but just for resources. Won't have much animals, mostly crops. He’ll live next to a village if there is one.

His first house will also be a dirt house, he’ll improve it overtime and add more levels and decorations. It can get very pretty in the end and he’ll be content to just stay and keep adding more to his house.

Not the best builder, but good enough for people to compliment it. He feels especially proud when Shigeo likes them, so he’s keen on building better and more.

He plans before he mines, calculates how many torches he needs and plans out what he’s exactly looking for, even calculates how many hunger bars each food item will fill before taking it with him.

If he gets really into the game, he’ll defeat the ender dragon, wither and head on into the nether. Not in that order though.

Will sleep if he doesn’t need to do anything

Most likely to have pets, perhaps a cat, or a dog, or a parrot. Only one though.

When he dies, he accepts it and moves on. Though, that would rarely happen.

Recently got into a forced Minecraft marriage with Shou. Is it forced if he enjoyed it though?

Teru

This bitch really just gonna jump right into survival just to flex on Shigeo.

Duh, of course he’ll have a farm. Will probably talk to the animals.

His first house is either borrowed from a villager or built with wood, but it’ll definitely not be a simple ass wooden house. It will be a nice fucking mansion, just watch him, he will. He’ll fight all the mobs he needs to just to built this mansion right off the bat, doesn’t even care if the first night he sleeps roofless.

Really good at building, because he wants to compete with Ritsu for fun and boast about it to Shigeo. Shigeo would just clap and be like “Wow so cool.”

“Thanks, made it myself, I can make one for you.” Shigeo declines, he’s an independent man, which makes Teru a mixture of disappointment and oh-my-god-you’re-adorable???

He doesn't plan when he mines, he just estimates and half ass some stuff before he struts into the cave. Sometimes he gets lost, but that’s perfectly fine.

Will defeat every mob boss and mob ever to show Shigeo he’s very powerful.

Doesn’t sleep, fights the phantom instead. Will sleep if Shigeo asks him to.

Most likely to have a pet cat, but he doesn’t mind dogs.

When he dies, he’s an angry baby and makes up some excuse as to why he’s dead. “I was distracted, didn’t see the lava. Whoops I guess ha ha no big deal.” But it is a big deal, he lost his diamonds, he wants to give it to his boyfriend but he cannot. Because he died.

Has yet to marry Shigeo in Minecraft.

Shou

Plays because he is a gamer. Survival hardcore ftw. He only plays multiplayer with Ritsu these days, never single player because he has been playing Minecraft his whole childhood and it gets boring on his own.

What’s a fucking farm? I take my food from my Minecraft husband.

Sleeps in a cave, but if Ritsu’s done with the house, he joins his bed with him and sleeps under a roof.

But he’s really really good at building, probably the best next to Serizawa. If you gave him the resources and time, he can recreate Seasoning City.

A concerning miner, jumps in with just torches and a pickaxe and somehow still survives (mostly because Ritsu always goes looking for him)

Could probably easily defeat the bosses because he has already done it so many times

Will only sleep when Ritsu is, which is almost all the time.

He owns every kind of animal.

He dies too many times because he really doesn’t mind, it makes Ritsu mad and that’s what keeps him going.

Played while he was still hiding in his home, so he knows everything about the game when he finally played it with Reigen or the kids.

He loves farming, even the animals, it’s oddly calming to take care of something that won’t die unless he hits em.

He always collects resources first before he actually starts building a home, so he always sleeps in a cave or a villager’s house.

After years of experience, he became really good at building, he use to spend time recreating maps from other games. But he says Shou is better than him, the boy disagrees.

Yeah he mines, but he’s wary of dying when he heads into the cave, so he always brings too many torches. 

Makes sure he is very very prepared before defeating bosses

Always sleeps in time, because Reigen said so. Well, because Reigen advised it, what a hypocrite am I right?

Doesn’t have pets, and even if he does, he always make them stay put at one place.

Doesn’t die all that often, almost not at all.

He pretends to not be good at the game when Reigen’s around, he mostly lets the other do what they wanna do because he loves watching his husband play.

“Serizawa! Look, I made the zombie villager back into a villager!” Reigen pointed, Serizawa smiles and nods. He already knew how to do that, but Reigen’s discovery makes it feel he discovered something new himself.
