Everyone knew about the rivalry between Night Raven and Royal Sword, it's a century of bad blood. How did they expect for a NRC student to get along with a RSA student!? That's simply absurd.
"Ugh why couldn't it be another school... Or someone i know" Reiji leaned back on the chair, the man in front of him was an student of Octavinelle. "This event is bound to fail, even the food sucks!" he pointed at the cheap dish in front of him, but the man just laughed, was he mocking?
"I understand, would you like to eat something else"
Was that a genuine question?
"Can you make Onigiri?"
Purple haired man put a finger on his lips, "I could try certainly, i do work in the kitchen quite a bit."
Reiji looked at him, now he was curious "What's your name?" "Livius Scylla, you can call me anything you desire, Reiji right?" "You knew my name?"
Livius smiled, a little peak of the sharp teeth, "I learn about everyone i talk with, shall we move to the kitchen?"
Turns out Livius is in fact a good cook.

I really like the duality of our Rampage Boys... They literally acted the opposite of their real characters.
AND THATS THE PROOF
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In High and Low, Tsukasa is the cool boy and Fujio is the cute golden retriever but in real life Hokuto is the real baby boy 🥺
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when you look at our Dynamic Duo, Tsuji is more serious, quite and calm than Shibaman but in real life Ryu is the big shy baby boy and Takahide is the most cheerful and funny among them 😍

And im not even talking about our little shy boys Icchan and Makochan... They did an amazing job 😭
Our lovely Rampage Boys are amazing and they deserve all the love 😭❤

Why Serena Can't Hate Yuri (and What May Happen in Duel Links) Part 1
This post is a mix of analysis and speculation, with specific focus on Serena's character and the similarities between her and Yuri due to their shared upbringing at Academia, as well as specific scenes in Duel Links that clue us in on what Serena's possible perspective on Yuri is.
It's a common idea in the fandom that Serena would hate Yuri and vice versa, but a closer look at her character reveals that there isn't much support for that idea at all. In short, it's OOC.
There's many reasons for it that I will outline below. But for one, if Serena hated Yuri, it would make her a massive hypocrite.
Before Serena betrayed Academia, she was willing to attack any and all people who used Xyz summoning. She had no qualms about hurting people as long as she got what she wanted and believed it was right. As we all know, her motivation was carding the Xyz remnants so Leo could recognize her abilities. This resulted in her carding Hokuto (and most likely other LDS students as well) and waving the card in a mocking gesture. Very Yuri-esque behavior.
Tumblr media
There is also her duel with Dennis, which portrays how Serena's self-certainty and arrogance was so strong that she refuses to listen when Dennis says he is not an Xyz remnant. Even after she realizes he wasn't who she is looking for, she is dismissive of the fact that she could have hurt someone uninvolved with the conflict. This Serena would most likely brush it off as collateral damage if she did end up carding him.
Tumblr media
(Interestingly enough, even though it's implied that Reiji brushed Hokuto's carding under the rug, Serena is never shown to reflect on the mistake even after meeting Shun. But that's for another day LOL.)
Serena, like Yuri, was generally arrogant and overconfident in her abilities, and saw herself as superior to all other duelists. Her desire to be recognized was a selfish one, even if it was so she could be useful to Academia's goals that she thought were honorable and just. That's how Academia's culture is—constantly proving that you're better than everyone else so you can climb the hierarchy. But a large part of Serena's character is introspection. She reflects on her past mistakes, and realizes the horrible things she did in the name of Academia—and her own pride/ego.
I believe that with the amount of self-reflection Serena does in Arc-V, it's only inevitable that Serena compare herself, or her past self, rather, with Yuri. All the reflection of everything she has done and what has happened to her probably makes Serena think that Yuri is the person she could've become had Leo given her what she wanted. A fate she escaped, in other words.
Of course, there is also Serena's horror at what Academia did to Xyz, which most likely still would have rocked her core even if she did achieve her dream of fighting on the front lines. She wanted to fight honorably, and is disgusted at her former peers for treating it like a "hunting game". This contrasts with Yuri, who is shown to not care at all about all the innocents carded in Xyz. But when it comes to hurting others for selfish gain, both Serena and Yuri have shown to be very capable of it, and to be bad people in general.
It's all about conditioning. Serena, a kind and compassionate person at heart, was able to be conditioned to feel superiority and arrogance and attack anyone to impress Leo, which she thought was wholly justified. Just about everyone in Academia is conditioned to be bad, though it's interesting how some are more susceptible than others (a poignant point in real life as well). What is it that makes some people more willing to engage in the "hunting game" and take glee in dominating others, like Sora, and some people horrified at the behavior of their peers, like Serena, Asuka, and the girl she tried to help escape? Is it being entrenched in that part of Academia's culture enough? A willingness to abandon one's humanity because they think there is nothing else for them? Or is it a desire to prove something?
Which then brings up the point of Yuri's own conditioning, and how it parallels Serena's.
I know a lot of people in the fandom think Yuri was completely bluffing here, and while I agree he was pretending to be swayed by Asuka's words, I do think his upset and grief was genuine. Otherwise, they probably wouldn't have shown flashbacks of his childhood. This scene is from Yuri's point of view, after all!
Tumblr media
We know little of how Serena was as a small child, other than she was constantly frustrated with Leo's treatment of her and wanted to prove herself to him, but Yuri's childhood more clearly shows how Leo got through to him. Yuri didn't start out as a bad person at all—he actually seems good, as all the Yu-boys are without Zarc, but his conflict was that everyone hated/feared him for being too strong (It can safely be assumed that it was Starving Venom in particular, or Zarc's benign influence). He was confused that someone like Asuka could be simultaneously strong and well liked, and was envious of her. At this point, all Yuri wanted was to duel others and have fun defeating them... and hopefully make a friend out of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's obvious, but Leo finding him in the midst of his isolation was the perfect way to manipulate him. Yuri immediately idolized Leo for reaching out to him, and thus accepted carding people with no second thought because of it. There were no questions asked; Yuri embraced it immediately, just like how Serena embraced carding her own opponents and fighting the other dimensions to create Leo's "utopia". Both Yuri and Serena only cared about pleasing Leo at first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Interestingly, in the English dub, Yuri screams that Leo ruined his life and he was too blind to realize it).
This devotion to Leo obviously falls apart for Yuri later, and I'll get to that. But there is something very striking about these lines in Duel Links that encapsulates Serena and Yuri's conditioning by Leo perfectly, and just how much pain and self-deprecation Serena's hindsight brings her personally:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serena and Yuri never, ever, ask any questions.
Ever.
I mean, every time someone in Arc-V demands for Yuri to tell them why he's kidnapping the girls, he doesn't bother with thinking about it. As long as it's an order from the Professor, Yuri will obey without question. And Serena tells Yuzu that Leo's words are absolute in Academia; she believes in a utopia with united dimensions because it's Leo's idea. No questions asked.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They just don't bother with thinking.
Yet another similarity between Serena and Yuri's conditioning is that they do make way for their own pursuits outside of Leo's orders. Yuri does everything he does because Leo tells him to, but his more central goal is deriving pleasure and excitement from chasing the girls and carding whoever else. Serena goes so far as to directly disobey Leo, but it's only because she thinks he's making a mistake in not recognizing her ability—she harms her loyalty to become more loyal, in a sense. Though Serena wants to be helpful to Leo's goals, boosting her pride and sense of superiority is her more underlying central goal. It's the same with Sora and Dennis, too. They follow orders without question, but they were both more interested in other things: the hunting game for Sora, and entertainment for Dennis.
Academia's culture not only cultivates absolute, unquestioning loyalty to Leo, but also a huge ego fest in which everyone wants to be superior. They're never given the opportunity to do much else. Serena says so herself in Duel Links, when Yuzu is sad upon her saying that no one was waiting for her to come back.
Tumblr media
In Japanese, Serena says it's because she was under house arrest in Academia since she was little. Either way, both versions convey that there is only so much you can do at Academia but fall in line with the paths they paint for you. This is doubly so for Yuri and Serena, who had special circumstances.
With all this in mind, it's clear that Serena understands very well how Academia conditioning works. How it can transform you into a bad person who only sees one way of life, and how Leo can make your worth revolve around him. Serena despises Academia and is hostile towards everyone affiliated with it, but that doesn't erase her understanding of these things. She's extremely familiar with how easy it is to embrace something bad with no questions asked, under the pretext of impressing Leo or believing it's good.
To allow herself to recognize the manipulation she was subject to and how it made her capable of terrible actions and not extend the same understanding to Yuri (or anyone else from Academia) would be very hypocritical. It would be a different set of rules for her and a different set of rules for others, in short, and I don't think Serena would stand by that. She believes strongly in fairness and integrity.
If Serena were to hate Yuri, who exhibits very similar behavior as she used to, she would have to hate herself too.
The limited paths Serena and Yuri have been subject to their whole lives paints yet another close parallel between them.
Serena learns the truth about Academia from Yuzu and Shun, and eagerly takes the path that leads towards the light. She's surrounded by people willing to give her a second chance and prove herself. Yuri knows nothing except how to win duels and please Leo, and when he stops caring about the latter, he only sees a path into the darkness. Everything Yuri does at this point is a means to an end. He's going to card everyone, keep satisfying himself, let himself be absorbed and resurrect Zarc, and die. This is all there is to him; there's nothing else anymore, because Yuri is incapable of having faith in any other possibility, or in any other version of himself. He doesn't understand them. It's how it's been for as long as he can remember; why would it change?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's never explained why Yuri suddenly stopped caring about Leo (maybe because the Arc Area Project was pretty much complete and he saw no use for Yuri anymore), but I find it really interesting how surprised Leo is when Yuri says he doesn't care about making him happy anymore. It shows that Leo genuinely believed Yuri would always be wrapped around his finger. His manipulation over Yuri is much more severe than Serena.
Perhaps there was a chance for him to escape Academia like Serena did, and Yuri briefly considers it right before the flashback, but that's impossible when he sees nothing else but what's in front of him. With Zarc's influence in full strength, Yuri thinks carding and satisfying himself is all there is. That it's all he is. Ironically, Yuri's reducing himself to what exactly Leo made him: a carding machine. Except this time, it's on his terms (like that makes it any better, because it doesn't).
What is most ironic about the paths Serena and Yuri take is that Serena goes from bad to good—an arrogant, selfish soldier with no qualms about hurting uninvolved people in the crossfire to a more compassionate fighter for justice, while Yuri goes from good to bad—a child who only saw joy and fun in dueling to a heartless attack dog. Who Yuri used to be is highly reminiscent of Yuya, who only wants to entertain and connect with people through duels, and it is that very quality that Serena eventually learns to enjoy for herself. Basically, what Yuri lost is what Serena gains, and what Serena lost is what Yuri gains.
Either way, they were both majorly screwed up by Academia and Leo.
There's definitely more analysis that can be done regarding Serena and Yuri and Yuri's character as a whole (who is unfortunately seen as one-dimensional and any further insight is even shunned by some), but with that foundation established, let's focus more on Serena's possible perspective on Yuri.
I'm running out of picture space, so part 2 continues here.

Ok, when it comes to VA's, I cant help but make these posts, esp when they're YGO connected, and esp if a Joey is involved.
So I'm rewatching Starmyu, cause I never got to season 3, and I already talked about this in past liveblogs, but Starmyu is not only just full of YGO characters, but its full of like main-main's.
These shots to me feel like the OG's have come back to teach the youngins.
Tumblr media
BUT I dont think I knew when I first made this post was that, standing right fucking next to Joey... is Tristan
Tumblr media
If the guy on the left had been Yugi or Ryou, it would've been amazing. It would have felt like one big ole reunion.
But anyway, the pic I have labelled with the green writing is mainly Arc V and some Zexal, but GX's literal protag Jaden is in this too, he's just on a different team (he's v pretty)
Other YGO's would be... Durbe, also from Zexal. Uh some other Arc V guy, Yaiba I think his name is (who if he was connected to anyone the most it would be the main character in this anime labelled in the pic with green writing as Hokuto)
That's all that comes to mind right now, so in total:
S!0 YGO = Joey and Tristan
GX = Jaden, the main character
Zexal = IV and Orbital, and others
Arc V = Yuya, the main character. Reiji, the main rival, and others
The VA for Yuya is not stranger to being close to former YGO protags or mains, like in this anime, this is Yuya and Jaden
Tumblr media
and then in Owari, this is Yuya and Astral
Tumblr media
Honestly, he's YGO's biggest gay ho

https://yugioh-arcv.fandom.com/wiki/Y%C5%ABya_Sakaki#Duels
I haven’t watched rest of Season 1 yet, but the Duel structure seems to be like this:
First group is the introduction duels, from opening duel with Gongenzaka to Sora.
Second group is the LDS duels, which everybody except Sora participate in.
Third group is the 4 pre-Maiami Championship duels.
Fourth group is the 1-on-1 duels in Maiami Championship.
Fifth and final group is the Battle Royale.
***
*First duels introduce us to the world and characters, and explain the mechanics of Pendulum (and Fusion, in case of Sora).
*Second duels introduce us to the ultimate Summoning methods of the main trio (Fusion for Yuzu, Synchro for Gongenzaka, Xyz for Yuya), and Reiji as the false antagonist of the Season.
*Third duels is technically the meat of the Season 1 of the show resides, episode-wise.
*Fourth duels largely set up the events for the later Seasons.
*Fifth duels are the climax of the Season.
***
*So, let’s dig a bit deeper here:
**We have Sawatari, and Sora as the main events for the first batch. Sawatari’s first duel sets him up as Yuya’s secondary rival (in terms of strength, though arguably not in terms of relevance), and Sora’s first duel sets up his character arc, going from part of the main cast, to main antagonist of the first season, to back to being part of the main cast at a lower capacity.
**For the second duels, we have set up for Yuya’s character, but not much for else. Hokuto only serves as a set-up for Yuya’s conversion to Xyz Summoning, and Reiji initially serves as the false antagonist of the first half of Season 1, then as the non-recurring rival for Yuya, then as the Morally Ambigious Big Good of the series, then back to being his rival for his de-facto Ceremonial Duel (since the de jure Ceremonial Duel against Yusho is not shown).
**This basically leaves us with the third group. There is something interesting going on with them. Michio, and Gongenzaka are both supposed to be around Yuya’s level, whereas Eita, and Mieru, being younger than Yuya, are supposed to be slightly above his level, but with less experience, and training.
Immediately in this batch, you can see Mieru standing out, not only because she is the only female of the group, but she is the only one with a unique Summoning method (Ritual), as well as a unique Monster Card Ability (Flip monsters). It is also the first one where he has to have a new variation of Odd-Eyes besides the Ishijima duel. In contrast to that, Gongenzaka duel is really more about showcasing his growth, rather than Yuya’s, even if it also features a new Odd-Eyes variant.
I guess the idea was that each of these duelists bring about something different out of Yuya, Michio duel requires him to exploit his weakness, which is what Sora would do, Eita duel requires him to exploit his opponent’s strength, which is what Gongenzaka would do, and Mieru duel very explicitly requires Fusion, which is what Yuzu is trying to learn. But that is somewhat speculative.
*Fourth group duels are a bit strange, since the second Sawatari duel sets him up as a recurring character (a la Manjoume), whereas the Isao duel showcases Yuya becoming Zarcified, and sets up the second Duel in Battle Royale against the Bandit School kids.
*Fifth group also don’t mean much, since the second Bandit School duel is essentially a continuation of Isao Duel, duel against Obelisk Force is essentially one big kerfuffle, and duel against Sora is there because you need the protagonist to Duel against the antagonist of the season (which DOESN’T happen in S2, where the rival takes out the Season’s bad guy, and S3, where the protagonist becomes the main bad guy).
****
I will probably go over Season 2 duels when I get there, but yeah, Season 1 is the most coherent season of ARC-V, and even there are structural issues.
The show is quite wishy washy about how to handle the rest of the cast (which shuffles each season, much like in GX), but it does technically do a better job than previous series, and VRAINS, which is a pretty high accomplishment for a Shonen Jump shonen series, but pretty low for any other shonen show (SEVENS and GO RUSH!! remain uncomparable for me since I didn’t watch those, and GO RUSH!! is not completed yet, but on paper, they both obviously do a better job than ARC-V, SEVENS has two main female characters, and GO RUSH!!’s main female character is tritagonist of the show).
Yuya’s duels, as seen on the wiki page, dimish rapidly until the epilogue as the series goes on, and more characters are introduced, which is quite against the general trend of Yu-Gi-Oh!, but it feels it is executed here pretty poorly, since while the end point of the show is very clearly constructed at the beginning (Yuya becomes Zarc), the road to get there is not well thought, so the respective screentime for each character is quite confusing, and there are tons of dropped plotlines, and story pacing stuff to get to the end point.
In contrast, I found DM’s canonical plotlines had a very simple progression, with Jonouchi, Yugi, and Kaiba getting roughly just amount of Duels for their respective relevance/power level (which is increased in the animé adaptation since the off-panel Duels are expanded to full-to-almost full length). 5D’s is kinda okay since Yusei’s Dueling time is artifically expanded with the structure of WRGP (final guy of the opposing team must go against Yusei, basically), VRAINS is decent-ish for the core trio, not so good for the rest, and GX tries for its time (at least in the first two seasons, back when they actually had female writers) and fails spectactularly on its face (and ZEXAL doesn’t even bother with it, which is fine. No effort means no expectation.). But as dilfosaur puts it, ARC-V actually spends time, unevenly as it is, to develop its cast, only to immediately hand-wave them away, and say core conflict was always between Zarc-Ray(and Leo to certain extent).
I kind of wish they took more inspiration from Pokémon animé, and Digimon Tamers, not less.

Yo What your RSA Ocs think of my Touhou inspired boys
Reiji Hokuto
Sai Hebiyama
Tumblr media
Reiji and Barry in my head surely would butt heads... I feel he accidentally said the wrong thing to him or stood out more than Barry and we know in his mind nobody can be better than him sooo... that is moreso Barry being petty about a lot of guys.
Sai he wouldn't care much about if ignore tbh. His brain would just shut off is Sai would talk science so... yeah he would just likely leave.
Tumblr media
She would be fine with either of them but not really be close... cause they just have nothing that is... really interesting to her or she could talk about... So in general she is glad they both are students that don't go on her nerve like others but she isn't close to them yet.
Tumblr media
Given they both take care of shrines, the god has some respect for them but still to him they are not that interesting so... he just treats them casual or ignores them.
Tumblr media
I feel she would in general have interest in Onigashima, would respect Reiji more while she think Sai is more uninteresting... Lydia is much easier to approach than Osyron so I can just see her be on a boasting yet casual vibe with them.
Tumblr media
At first Fabio would be intimidated by them both but I can see him even have a pretty friendly bond with them... he is a tall kind guy but just always a bit lost when it comes to cultures and things so... I am sure he would love if they both talk about their home and what they... maybe relate to Sai and all.
Tumblr media
Saneria is mean.... she wouldn't have had to meet them to have insulted them at least once however... I don't think they are targets for her bullying, she has no reason to do so... she prefers going after prettier girls.

Ryuga: 8/10. I love jackets being worn as capes. I love how he makes a tiara look so badass. I love the gauntlet
Possessed Ryuga: 9/10. He loses the cape but veiny muscles + face marks + his face stretching to like if you put a dragon skull in a human head
Ryo: 7/10. His outfit is just Gingka’s but better
Hyoma: 4/10. It’s stylish but doesn’t have anything special going for it
Hokuto: 2/10. That’s a weird ass dog but I like the headband
Yu: 4/10. It’s just alright really
Tsubasa: 10/10. This is just personal bias because this is exactly how I want to look. Also, have this image taken from his debut scene
Tobio: 4/10. Mainly for the eyepatch/visor
Kumasuke: 4/10. Nothing special (except for the fact that Benkei joked about Doji having a merch store and Kumasuke proves it’s probably true)
Kumata: 3/10. A downgrade from Kumasuke
Kumaji: 3/10. Same as Kumaji
Sora: 7/10. I love sleeveless jackets
Ryutaro: 6/10. The makeup makes it work
Phoenix: 10/10. I love the hang glider coat. I love the mask. I love the boots. Easily one of my favorite designs
Teru: 7/10. I love that jacket (side note but watch the scene in episode 34 where he meets Gingka and tell me the ost there is not one of the best of the season)
Django: 6/10. He’s practically a background character yet he gets such a good cowboy design
Kazuki: 3/10. He’s almost a background character but I like the beanie
Yui: 1/10. Absolutely nothing going on
Busujima: 8/10. Cyberpunk Waluigi wearing spiked arm (shoulder?) bands and steel toed boots
Reiji: 6/10. His clothes are plain until you look right below his belt. Also snake eye hair clips
Nemea: 7/10. Very stylish and I love the necklace
Van: 7/10. I love the spikes and the chain belt
Aegis: 5/10. He’s simultaneously a 10 and a 0
Crow: 5/10. I like the coat
Hajime: 3/10. Really no sense of fashion
B-Killer: 10/10. I love every part of this giant robotic design
Rochi: 4/10. I like the jewelry but that’s it
Tsuyoshi: 4/10. Some of it works. Some of it doesn’t
Kai: 4/10. That necklace makes it work
Kouki: 6/10. It looks good and the earrings complete it
Asami: 3/10. Practically a background character
Hellbeyd: 4/10. Looks good but nothing special
Kakeru: 4/10. It’s camouflage but more can be done with it
Mamoru: 4/10. Kinda plain, but that gauntlet does look good
Mariko. 5/10. Good, but more detail would be nice
Rina: 5/10. You can’t go wrong with a cat girl but at the same time she’s nothing standout

Each time I see Dimension XYZ played by Shun in episode 24, each time I get surprised at the amount of foreshadowing that Arc V hinted.
Also Yuto explaining how fusion is their enemy and that Ruri would never learn fusion summoning. Like he acknowledges Yuzu isn't Ruri.
Reiji makes an appearance to Shun after his duel with Masumi, Yaiba, and Hokuto. I admire how he is determined to show his face before an attacker which means he isn't about running away (and doing something about the dimensional war his father set out to do).

So Episode 88.
Yuya's Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon shutting down the electricity is a reference to the Yusei vs. Placido duel in 5D's.
Crow's Black Bird can glide in ARC-V as well, but Yuya has to use Supreme Wings. This suggests Crow that he really isn't associated with Tops, and something else is going on.
Crow brings Yuya to his senses by destroying Rebellion Dragon, but to Supreme Wings' effect, he loses the Duel. I guess this is supposed to be a prelude of the final duel with Z-ARC, ie. mutual destruction with some vestige of Z-ARC remaining to reform next time.
When Yuya is knocked out, all the other Yuboys are knocked out too.
Obelisk Force invades Synchro by using gliding paratroopers. Sergey's goal is shifted from Reiji to Obelisk Force.
Sora will be chasing after Obelisk Force.
My sentiments for this Duel is similar to Jack's. Though the audience is thrilled because of the life-or-death situation, with Yuzu presuming Yuya is out of commission, neither Yuya's actual personality, nor Crow's style is really utilized here.
So basically a teaser for Season 3 after Serena-Ruri duel, and onward. I guess this means Jack, and Z-ARC agrees in retrospect.
Other tidbits:
Obelisk Force invading isn't too surprising. They previously invaded in Battle Royales, so it makes sense for them to invade during Friendship Cup. They can disguise themselves as participants for the common folk, and due to how GX's Dueling Energy rules work, they need to strong Duelists to card anyway.
Serena suggests leaving her behind to save the rest of the trio, but Tsukikage rejects that, even though it is obvious Reira cannot hold on either.
On an unrelated note, I didn't post this before, but Xiangsheng Magician's Level alteration effect's animation is based off Hokuto's Constellar Kaust.
Next episode will be Obelisk Force vs. Tsukikage, with Sora interfering.
