thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.

what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).

in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.

best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.

By which I mean my Worstie and main antagonist of the series, John Gaius (PhD).

I don’t think TLT as a series engages with race in any especially meaningful ways. It’s set in a post-Earth society with entirely different social norms, and there’s no concept of race and ethnicity within the population of the Nine Houses. Physical descriptions of the characters are scarce to say the least, and they rarely spell out the kind of features that suggest specific racial connotations, because the POV characters don’t seem to think it’s something worth remarking upon. iirc, it takes until halfway through HtN for the narrative to confirm that Harrow has brown skin.

[See also Tamsyn’s GtN characters description post. It quotes passages from the book, and you can see how minimal the descriptions are, and she repeats several times that her characters’ appearances are up to the readers’ interpretations. It just doesn’t seem to be a big concern of hers]

Then there’s John, who grew up in twenty-first-century New Zealand and IS explicitly Māori in a way that absolutely impacted his character arc. It's not A major theme of his Nona chapters, but it’s there if you read between the lines. The boarding school he went to, which IRL had a high percentage of low-income Māori students on scholarship. The depth of his climate anxiety, his uncompromising “Nobody left behind” stance before the cryo project was halted, and his fervent hatred of ‘the trillionaires’ afterwards... these are all informed to some extent by his background as an indigenous man imo, and so was the global reaction to his developing powers. The “We were going to put you fellas in jail, weren’t we?” the way his initial attempts at publications are all flat-out ignored by the scientific community and dismissed as culty gimmicky faith healing until he leans into it.

John being Māori is just one of the many pieces of his backstory, and far from the most impactful to what eventually went down, but my point remains that he is the ONLY character in TLT whose racial background 1) affects his story arc and 2) is relatable to the audience. Everyone else is ten thousand years removed from Earth, and I’m just not very interested in using racial identifiers when exploring these characters and their dynamics, because the characters themselves don’t care and neither does the narrative.

ATTAINING TO A SPIRITUAL CONSCIOUSNESS

"Yes, I long to come to know Him; that is, the power of His resurrection, and so to share with Him His sufferings as to be continuously transformed by His death, in the hope of attaining, in some measure, the resurrection that lifts me out from among the dead." - Philippians 3:10-11

We must guard our spirit concerning attitudes and things that can hinder the "quality" of our spiritual life. When we neglect to value and maintain His presence in our daily life experience, we will gradually lose our interest in daily communing with the Lord. Our understanding of spiritual principles will become clouded and deteriorate, and we will be robbed of His best for us.

POWER OF NEGATIVE THOUGHTS

Negative thoughts or things, if not dealt with, will gradually eat away the progress that we have made toward our becoming passionate about helping others with their spiritual life (which would manifest itself in dying to the self-life). Any spiritual sensitivity that has developed within us will become dull and we will begin to feel that the Lord is far away and no longer interested in us.

WORLDLY ATTACHMENTS AND RELATIONSHIPS

If we are sincere in our desire for His best, all attachments and relationships that are not compatible with His will and PURPOSE for us, or do not enhance His workings within us, must be brought to the Cross, and left there. Only then will we be established on a firm foundation and capable of cultivating an active, abiding friendship with Jesus as we continually abide in His love flowing into our heart as we go throughout the day.

ADVANCING IN HIS PURPOSE FOR OUR LIFE

As we continue in our times of daily communion with the Lord COUPLED WITH AFFIRMING AND MEDITATING THE SCRIPTURES THAT CONFIRM OUR CHRIST IDENTITY, our perception and understanding of spirituality, and of spiritual things will increase. We will have an increasing desire and ability to respond to and value His abiding presence and workings to bring us into a lifestyle of moving from glory to glory as we bear fruit that remains for His Kingdom through our Christ Calling.

"For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to good works, which God has before ordained that we should walk in them."  - Ephesians 2:10

As we continually experience His person our eyes are opened to see from His heavenly perspective.  This would including discipling other Believers into their Christ identity and encouraging them to ask, knock, and seek until they come to understand God’s purpose for their life so they will be effective in advancing His Kingdom.

We have the potential to believe impossibilities into reality. We are the world changers God destined us to be.

It should’ve been a summoning just like any other. Just another ghoul to help around the ministry as it continues to grow. It’s routine for Copia now, the incense, the chants, the glittering robes. The summoning circle glows brightly, the scent of sulphur permeating into the room. A blackened clawed hand appears to scrabble at the edge of the circle, a demon attempting to claw its way back to the surface. Aether gasps behind him, eyes glowing brighter through the goggles of his mask. A quintessence then. Good, that is what the Papa had been aiming for. And then Cumulus gasps too, glowing bright like Aether. Copia cocks his head as he watches. A multi, quint and air. Interesting.

A pair of tall golden tipped horns emerges, followed by pitch black hair streaked with stark white. Copia can’t help the slight smile his lips shift into. Phantom had emerged in much of the same way. The ghoul cries out, more dark grey skin revealing itself as the creature pulls itself from the pit. At long last, and with one final cry, they slump to the floor, chest heaving as they try to catch their breath. Copia simply waits, not wanting to rush them. The heart-shaped tip of their tail thrashes, long ears pinned back against their head. The tips of their ears appear to be feathery, as is their tail, and the long claws digging into the floor are gold.

The Papa steps forward, robes swishing as he moves to stand in front of them. He’s already opened his mouth, preparing to launch into the long standard speech he usually gives. The words die in Copia’s throat when the ghoul looks up, mismatched green and white eyes meeting his own. Finally he’s able to rasp out a single word, heart jumping into his throat and mind going blank.

Osha’s “I will find you!” and Anakin’s “I won’t let this dream come to pass”: same principle. (Resolving to go down a dark path to find the strength to save the person they love most from peril.)

Same result? (Eternal separation via death and/or pushing their loved one further and further away with every action they take trying to keep them close and keep them safe, until their loved one doesn't recognize and can’t stand what they’ve become.)

It wasn't unusual for Cassius to just sort of... end up in places, given how often he hopped between realms in his eternal search for the Great Slayer. Though admittedly it was a little concerning that he couldn't recall how he ended up here, but he figured that wasn't something he needed to really worry about just yet.

Especially given that his instincts were currently screaming at him that he was standing of the presence of a true, genuine divine being.

The Night Sentinel tilts his head at the divine's response. Truthfully, most of his genetics had come from his mother, but even with the physical differences he still had his resemblances to his father. Perhaps not in body but certainly of mind and definitely in soul. There weren't many people who had the strength to face the darkness, and even fewer who could wade into its depths and return sound of mind and body.

Cassius leans on his spear casually, like he wasn't standing in the presence of an actual god who could probably vaporize him if he accidentally pissed them off. I feel like Cesare was probably stoked to be brought back from the dead and to live forever as a powerful invulnerable being (in exchange for a bit of manual labor of course), but that excitement is about to run out Very Soon when he realizes just how royally dicked over he's been by Upper Management. I think that's the reason FILP sounds so peppy and excited, while the reprise sounds so tortured- the scenario he's in is the same so the lyrics to the song are the same, but he just doesn't realize how trapped he is by his situation yet and how little control he actually has.

AS A RESURRECTED BELIEVER, I AM NO ACCIDENT GOING SOMEWHERE TO HAPPEN. MY LIFE ISN'T JUST A LOOSE WEB OF EVENTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES. GOD HAS SPECIFIC PLANS FOR ME.

When God releases grace, it is important to understand that grace does not mean only undeserved favor. Grace is also the release of supernatural ability, an ability to do exceedingly abundantly more than we can ask, think or imagine (see Ephesians 3:20).

In 2 Corinthians 9:8, the Apostle Paul says, "And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed."

This is the kind of grace the Lord releases over us -- a grace that produces "all sufficiency"; an abundance! In this kairos season, it is important that we position ourselves rightly for this outpouring of grace, seeking God very diligently. If we do so, there will be a remantling, redefining, and revitalizing, propelling us into our future.

The window of occasion is open, and there is an abounding grace available. Believe it, tap into it, and join the apostolic company God is raising up throughout the earth who are connecting to the CALLING of God on their lives (their DESTINY in Christ).

Everything about it is just so lively and detailed. I love the whole 'modern city dwellers meet centuries-old vampires' aspect of the world, plus it's a city and I love cities! The premades are so charming and attractive; their backstories are all interesting (even the ghosts!), and everybody has beef with somebody. When I first got into Sims 3, I always played in Bridgeport.❤️
