Benefits of Retail Cleaning Services for Your Retail Store
Just like offices, retail stores and shopping centres also require thorough and professional cleaning on a daily basis. Retail cleaning services have a lot of benefits for businesses and that is why more retail businesses are hiring commercial cleaning companies for their retail cleaning.
In this post, we will discuss the most important benefits of retail cleaning services for retail stores and shopping centres.
Benefits of Retail Cleaning Services
Retail cleaning services have several benefits. We have explored the 9 most important advantages of a retail cleaning service in London based on what retail stores and businesses in London are experiencing.
#1 Better Shopping Experience
Providing a better shopping experience has always been the number one concern of retail businesses. A successful way of leaving an unforgettable shopping experience for customers is a clean store. When the store is clean and the sales floor is shining bright, it automatically attracts customers and gives them a shopping experience they haven’t had before.
#2 Staying on Top of Competition
The competition is fierce between retail stores and retail businesses. They are looking for a unique way to stand out, get more customers and sell more products. Regular retail store cleaning is a tried-and-tested solution for staying on top of the competition for retail businesses.
#3 Promoting Quality Products
One of the perceptions of a clean store in the mind of customers is the quality of products being sold inside. If the store environment is clean and pristine, it tells the customer that the store only sells quality and brand products. Therefore, the customer gets in and looks around the shop and will eventually make a purchase.
#4 Increasing Sales
When customers are attracted to the cleanliness and professionalism of a retail store, they will enter the shop. Therefore, the chances they buy something will increase significantly. The result is, therefore, more sales and more revenue for the business while potentially making a few loyal customers who will return for more purchases.
#5 Better Store Environment
Providing a better store environment by having it cleaned every day not only helps the business make more sales but also improves the mood and morale of staff and employees. Customers enter a clean retail store where everything is pristine, the floor is shining and a pleasant scent is present in the environment. This will build a better first impression and brand image for the customer. In addition, working in such a well-maintained environment enables your staff to maintain a better customer relation, which is the key to more sales.
#6 Cost-Effective Solution
A goal for every retail business is to save money by implementing different measures. Hiring a retail cleaning service is a proven way to save businesses a lot of money in the long run. Commercial cleaning services for retail stores are done by qualified and well-trained cleaning staff. The cleaning duration is also reduced to just two or three hours per day. Therefore, their services, compared to full-time cleaning staff, are cost-effective and economical for the business in the long term.
#7 Prolonging Assets Lifespan
A benefit of daily cleaning for the retail sector is extending the lifespan of store assets. This can be equipment like furniture, computers and cash machines or store products and items for sale. Without professional cleaning services in the store, assets will collect dust and degrade which not only decreases the quality and the value of the items and products but also increases the repair, maintenance and replacement cost of store furniture, computers and other assets.
#8 Time-Saving & Flexible Service
Daily retail cleaning is a time-consuming job. It is not economical for the business to ask its staff to spend precious time cleaning the store on a daily basis. Also, cleaning during working hours distracts other employees and may disrupt customers. The solution is to hire commercial cleaning companies. They offer cleaning service outside working hours. Therefore, they clean the store early in the morning before the store opens or in the afternoon after the store is closed. This not only saves your employee’s time but also prevents distractions and disruption for both employees and customers.
#9 Full Range of Services for The Retail Sector
Another important benefit of hiring retail cleaning services is the full range of professional cleaning and support services they offer their clients. You can ask your retail cleaning contractor not only to provide general and deep cleaning services but also other services like HVAC maintenance, handyman and repair service, retrofitting and renovation projects and many other services. Commercial cleaning companies are the one-stop shop for businesses regardless of what service they may require.

Sympathy for the spammer
Tumblr media
Catch me in Miami! I'll be at Books and Books in Coral Gables on Jan 22 at 8PM.
Tumblr media
In any scam, any con, any hustle, the big winners are the people who supply the scammers – not the scammers themselves. The kids selling dope on the corner are making less than minimum wage, while the respectable crime-bosses who own the labs clean up. Desperate "retail investors" who buy shitcoins from Superbowl ads get skinned, while the MBA bros who issue the coins make millions (in real dollars, not crypto).
It's ever been thus. The California gold rush was a con, and nearly everyone who went west went broke. Famously, the only reliable way to cash out on the gold rush was to sell "picks and shovels" to the credulous, doomed and desperate. That's how Leland Stanford made his fortune, which he funneled into eugenics programs (and founding a university):
https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/malcolm-harris/palo-alto/9780316592031/
That means that the people who try to con you are almost always getting conned themselves. Think of Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scams. My forthcoming novel The Bezzle opens with a baroque and improbable fast-food Ponzi in the town of Avalon on the island of Catalina, founded by the chicle monopolist William Wrigley Jr:
http://thebezzle.org
Wrigley found fast food declasse and banned it from the island, a rule that persists to this day. In The Bezzle, the forensic detective Martin Hench uncovers The Fry Guys, an MLM that flash-freezes contraband burgers and fries smuggled on-island from the mainland and sells them to islanders though an "affiliate marketing" scheme that is really about recruiting other affiliate markets to sell under you. As with every MLM, the value of the burgers and fries sold is dwarfed by the gigantic edifice of finance fraud built around it, with "points" being bought and sold for real cash, which is snaffled up and sucked out of the island by a greedy mainlander who is behind the scheme.
A "bezzle" is John Kenneth Galbraith's term for "the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it." In every scam, there's a period where everyone feels richer – but only the scammers are actually cleaning up. The wealth of the marks is illusory, but the longer the scammer can preserve the illusion, the more real money the marks will pump into the system.
MLMs are particularly ugly, because they target people who are shut out of economic opportunity – women, people of color, working people. These people necessarily rely on social ties for survival, looking after each others' kids, loaning each other money they can't afford, sharing what little they have when others have nothing.
It's this social cohesion that MLMs weaponize. Crypto "entrepreneurs" are encouraged to suck in their friends and family by telling them that they're "building Black wealth." Working women are exhorted to suck in their bffs by appealing to their sisterhood and the chance for "women to lift each other up."
The "sales people" trying to get you to buy crypto or leggings or supplements are engaged in predatory conduct that will make you financially and socially worse off, wrecking their communities' finances and shattering the mutual aid survival networks they rely on. But they're not getting rich on this – they're also being scammed:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4686468
This really hit home for me in the mid-2000s, when I was still editing Boing Boing. We had a submission form where our readers could submit links for us to look at for inclusion on the blog, and it was overwhelmed by spam. We'd add all kinds of antispam to it, and still, we'd get floods of hundreds or even thousands of spam submissions to it.
One night, I was lying in my bed in London and watching these spams roll in. They were all for small businesses in the rustbelt, handyman services, lawn-care, odd jobs, that kind of thing. They were 10 million miles from the kind of thing we'd ever post about on Boing Boing. They were coming in so thickly that I literally couldn't finish downloading my email – the POP session was dropping before I could get all the mail in the spool. I had to ssh into my mail server and delete them by hand. It was maddening.
Frustrated and furious, I started calling the phone numbers associated with these small businesses, demanding an explanation. I assumed that they'd hired some kind of sleazy marketing service and I wanted to know who it was so I could give them a piece of my mind.
But what I discovered when I got through was much weirder. These people had all been laid off from factories that were shuttering due to globalization. As part of their termination packages, their bosses had offered them "retraining" via "courses" in founding their own businesses.
The "courses" were the precursors to the current era's rise-and-grind hustle-culture scams (again, the only people getting rich from that stuff are the people selling the courses – the "students" finish the course poorer). They promised these laid-off workers, who'd given their lives to their former employers before being discarded, that they just needed to pull themselves up by their own boostraps:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/10/declaration-of-interdependence/#solidarity-forever
After all, we had the internet now! There were so many new opportunities to be your own boss! The course came with a dreadful build-your-own-website service, complete with an overpriced domain sales portal, and a single form for submitting your new business to "thousands of search engines."
This was nearly 20 years ago, but even then, there was really only one search engine that mattered: Google. The "thousands of search engines" the scammers promised to submit these desperate peoples' websites to were just submission forms for directories, indexes, blogs, and mailing lists. The number of directories, indexes, blogs and mailing lists that would publish their submissions was either "zero" or "nearly zero." There was certainly no possibility that anyone at Boing Boing would ever press the wrong key and accidentally write a 500-word blog post about a leaf-raking service in a collapsing deindustrialized exurb in Kentucky or Ohio.
The people who were drowning me in spam weren't the scammers – they were the scammees.
But that's only half the story. Years later, I discovered how our submission form was getting included in this get-rich-quick's mass-submission system. It was a MLM! Coders in the former Soviet Union were getting work via darknet websites that promised them relative pittances for every submission form they reverse-engineered and submitted. The smart coders didn't crack the forms directly – they recruited other, less business-savvy coders to do that for them, and then often as not, ripped them off.
The scam economy runs on this kind of indirection, where scammees are turned into scammers, who flood useful and productive and nice spaces with useless dross that doesn't even make them any money. Take the submission queue at Clarkesworld, the great online science fiction magazine, which famously had to close after it was flooded with thousands of junk submission "written" by LLMs:
https://www.npr.org/2023/02/24/1159286436/ai-chatbot-chatgpt-magazine-clarkesworld-artificial-intelligence
There was a zero percent chance that Neil Clarke would accidentally accept one of these submissions. They were uniformly terrible. The people submitting these "stories" weren't frustrated sf writers who'd discovered a "life hack" that let them turn out more brilliant prose at scale.
They were scammers who'd been scammed into thinking that AIs were the key to a life of passive income, a 4-Hour Work-Week powered by an AI-based self-licking ice-cream cone:
https://pod.link/1651876897/episode/995c8a778ede17d2d7cff393e5203157
This is absolutely classic passive-income brainworms thinking. "I have a bot that can turn out plausible sentences. I will locate places where sentences can be exchanged for money, aim my bot at it, sit back, and count my winnings." It's MBA logic on meth: find a thing people pay for, then, without bothering to understand why they pay for that thing, find a way to generate something like it at scale and bombard them with it.
Con artists start by conning themselves, with the idea that "you can't con an honest man." But the factor that predicts whether someone is connable isn't their honesty – it's their desperation. The kid selling drugs on the corner, the mom desperately DMing her high-school friends to sell them leggings, the cousin who insists that you get in on their shitcoin – they're all doing it because the system is rigged against them, and getting worse every day.
These people reason – correctly – that all the people getting really rich are scamming. If Amazon can make $38b/year selling "ads" that push worse products that cost more to the top of their search results, why should the mere fact that an "opportunity" is obviously predatory and fraudulent disqualify it?
https://pluralistic.net/2023/11/29/aethelred-the-unready/#not-one-penny-for-tribute
The quest for passive income is really the quest for a "greater fool," the economist's term for the person who relieves you of the useless crap you just overpaid for. It rots the mind, atomizes communities, shatters solidarity and breeds cynicism:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/24/passive-income/#swiss-cheese-security
The rise and rise of botshit cannot be separated from this phenomenon. The botshit in our search-results, our social media feeds, and our in-boxes isn't making money for the enshittifiers who send it – rather, they are being hustled by someone who's selling them the "picks and shovels" for the AI gold rush:
https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/jan/03/botshit-generative-ai-imminent-threat-democracy
That's the true cost of all the automation-driven unemployment criti-hype: while we're nowhere near a place where bots can steal your job, we're certainly at the point where your boss can be suckered into firing you and replacing you with a bot that fails at doing your job:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/11/robots-stole-my-jerb/#computer-says-no
The manic "entrepreneurs" who've been stampeded into panic by the (correct) perception that the economy is a game of musical chairs where the number of chairs is decreasing at breakneck speed are easy marks for the Leland Stanfords of AI, who are creating generational wealth for themselves by promising that their bots will automate away all the tedious work that goes into creating value. Expect a lot more Amazon Marketplace products called "I'm sorry, I cannot fulfil this request as it goes against OpenAI use policy":
https://www.theverge.com/2024/1/12/24036156/openai-policy-amazon-ai-listings
No one's going to buy these products, but the AI picks-and-shovels people will still reap a fortune from the attempt. And because history repeats itself, these newly minted billionaires are continuing Leland Stanford's love affair with eugenics:
https://www.truthdig.com/dig-series/eugenics/
The fact that AI spam doesn't pay is important to the fortunes of AI companies. Most high-value AI applications are very risk-intolerant (self-driving cars, radiology analysis, etc). An AI tool might help a human perform these tasks more accurately – by warning them of things that they've missed – but that's not how AI will turn a profit. There's no market for AI that makes your workers cost more but makes them better at their jobs:
https://locusmag.com/2023/12/commentary-cory-doctorow-what-kind-of-bubble-is-ai/
Plenty of people think that spam might be the elusive high-value, low-risk AI application. But that's just not true. The point of AI spam is to get clicks from people who are looking for better content. It's SEO. No one reads 2000 words of algorithm-pleasing LLM garbage over an omelette recipe and then subscribes to that site's feed.
And the omelette recipe generates pennies for the spammer that posted it. They are doing massive volume in order to make those pennies into dollars. You don't make money by posting one spam. If every spammer had to pay the actual recovery costs (energy, chillers, capital amortization, wages) for their query, every AI spam would lose (lots of) money.
Hustle culture and passive income are about turning other peoples' dollars into your dimes. It is a negative-sum activity, a net drain on society. Behind every seemingly successful "passive income" is a con artist who's getting rich by promising – but not delivering – that elusive passive income, and then blaming the victims for not hustling hard enough:

Genie: Javier's Wishes
Click here to see the genie’s first master.
Click here to see the genie's previous master.
When the club finally closed at 3 AM, Javier breathed a sigh of relief. Sure, now he had to clean the whole place after a night of metalhead raving, but after that, he could go home and get some blessed sleep before his shift at the grocery store in the morning.
Javier was putting himself through college. On paper, the job at the club was great, way better than his other stocking and retail jobs. For most of his shift, he could do his readings while making sure that the patrons didn’t get too randy in the bathroom every 20 minutes or so. Even so, the constant cycle of work, sleep, class, repeat was draining. More than anything, Javier wanted some time off to travel.
While tossing a bag of garbage out into the alley, a glimmer of light in the dimness caught Javier’s eye. Just to one side of the door, as if it had been dropped carelessly, was an antique lamp.
Javier picked it up and stuck it in his hoodie pocket. If nothing else, it seemed to be real brass. He could probably sell it. With heavy, tired feet, Javier finished with clean-up and headed home. Before he could even think to unpack his things, he collapsed on his bed.
It wasn’t until the next day, after a shift at the grocery store, afternoon classes, and an evening at his tutoring job, that Javier slumped at the desk in his studio apartment and took out the lamp.
The thing was definitely real brass. There was just one discoloured spot on the side. Javier grabbed a washcloth, but he had barely begun to rub it when a stream of rainbow smoke erupted from the spout. Seconds later, a buff genie in a pair of form-fitting satin pants and a billowy white shirt was hovering in the middle of Javier’s room.
“You know how this goes, right babe?” the genie said, grinning down at Javier. “You make a wish each day, and I make it come true.”
Javier barely had to think. He knew what he needed in his life. “I wish I could travel,” he told the genie.
“Perf,” replied the genie, and clapped his big hands. A burst of dark blue smoke shot from between his hands and then thickened, filling Javier’s vision. In particular, it centred on his old flip phone, the cheapest thing that he had been able to buy.
When the smoke cleared, Javier looked down at himself and was shocked to see that he was in a sharp business suit, holding a briefcase. Instead of his old apartment, he was standing in a hotel room. On the desk, a sleek new Samsung flip phone was open, an appointment blinking. Javier had to get to the airport to fly to London.
In the taxi, Javier took a few work calls. He found that the information he needed for his new job as a marketing professional appeared in his mind as he reached for it. But, by the time he boarded the plane, he realised that he had to create a presentation and do hours of research before he landed at Heathrow. Thankfully, the company paid for his business class seat and in-flight wifi.
After the meeting in London, it was only a few hours until Javier was on his way to a meeting in Lagos. From there, he flew to Kuala Lumpur, and then Hong Kong. It was three days before Javier was sitting on a plane without any pressing work tasks to complete. After so many flights, he wasn’t sure where he was flying to. He went into the airplane toilet and rubbed the lamp.
The genie appeared in the mirror, disdaining to diminish his bulk in the cramped quarters. “You got another wish?” he purred, grinning out at Javier.
“I wish I didn’t have to work,” Javier said, his voice slurring from tiredness.
“Haven’t heard that one before.” The genie winked, and the vent in the bathroom issued a cloud of dark blue smoke. Instead of a suit, Javier found himself in perfectly fitted loungewear as the tiny commercial toilet expanded into a luxurious bathroom. Stepping out of the door, Javier stood in the bedroom of a private jet decorated in a classy, understated style.
A cute young man in a steward uniform stepped into the room. “Can I help with anything, sir?”
“Please, just call me Javi,” Javi said, the words seeming to fall from his lips unbidden in a smooth, laid-back tone. “And no, I’ll call if I need anything.” The full-size bed and fresh satin sheets were calling to him.
After a nap, Javi felt refreshed. The plane was coming in to land in some exotic locale or another. As a trust fund baby with several million dollars in the bank, Javi loved to fly from place to place around the world as the mood took him. He would just stay at a local resort until he got bored and flew out again.
And yet, all the days of partying and living it up felt strangely empty. Javi found himself remembering his life before the genie. All his classmates, friends, and coworkers still living from paycheque to paycheque while Javi ate off of plates worth more than they made in a year. Still, even his indescribable wealth wasn’t enough to support all of them for the rest of their lives. Not if Javi wanted to live as he was becoming accustomed to. So he summoned the genie.
“I wish I could help my friends.”
“Finally, something I can work with,” the genie groaned dramatically, and snapped his fingers.
Instantly, Javi’s vision filled with dark blue smoke. There was a wrenching sensation as he seemed to be pulled across a great distance. When his vision cleared, Javi found himself seated in a well-appointed lounge. He was in a perfectly tailored, fashionable suit, and looked over the rims of his round sunglasses as another young suited man entered.
Tumblr media
“Your Highness,” the man said, making Javi’s head spin, “announcing tonight’s young lords.”
Behind him, two more men, some of Javi’s old coworkers from the grocery store, entered. They had fresh haircuts and were wearing perfectly tailored suits that left nothing about their trim bodies to the imagination. Javi found his mouth watering.
The memories rushed in. In order to help the most people in his circle, Javi had used his trust fund to establish a sort of feudal fraternity. He was the Prince, and beneath him were a selection of Dukes who invested in Counts, Viscounts, and Barons. This way, the money went farther, and there was a sense of decorum among Prince Javi’s modern “nobility.”
Of course, judging by the way the two Barons being presented before him tonight were undressing him with their eyes, appearances could only be kept up so long. The Prince was owed his due from those sworn to his service, and Javi could feel his cock hardening in his wool slacks. “Take this to the vault,” he told the steward, one of the rotating Dukes, handing him the lamp. “My lords, with me.” Javi crooked a finger at his Barons and led them to the adjoining playroom.
The Duke handed the lamp off to the nearest non-noble staff member, who took the next exit out of Prince Javi’s court/club. He had been planning to steal some silverware before leaving, but this was a much better haul.

Before this column ends, we’ll get to the unmissable fact that anti-Israel, often antisemitic, protests are proliferating at what we amusingly choose to call our most “selective” universities—Columbia, Yale, New York University, Stanford, Berkeley. For the moment, add these North Face tent protests on $75,000-a-year campus quads to the sense among the American public that their country is running off the rails.
A list of the phenomena laying us low includes: wokeness, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), defund the police (a depressing subset of wokeness), conspiracy theories, head-in-the-sand isolationism and a self-centered political polarization typified—from left to right—by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert.
Ironically this time of year is associated with hope, amid spring and college graduations—except at the University of Southern California, which, fearing trouble, canceled its commencement speakers and told honorary-degree recipients not to show up.
Setting silenced USC aside, a hopeful note one hears at college commencements is that the American system is self-correcting, that despite recurrent stress, it always rights itself. Opinion polls suggest few believe this anymore but—happy spring—it looks as if we may be on the brink of a real counter-revolt against the craziness.
Last week in the hopelessly gridlocked House, Republican Speaker Mike Johnson, facing threats to his job from the chaos caucus, cast his lot with the enough-is-enough caucus. The House passed bills to sustain allies in Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Congress isn’t dead—yet.
Blue states and cities that looked willing to collapse rather than defend their citizens have begun to push back against progressives’ pro-criminal and antipolice movements.
At the urging of Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York’s just-passed state budget includes measures to crack down on shoplifting. Assaulting a retail worker will be a felony. Larceny charges can be based on the total goods stolen from different stores. Progressives in the state’s Legislature opposed the measures. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, elected in January on restoring law and order (yes, it can be a Democratic issue), last week announced a plan to support policing in the most crime- and drug-plagued neighborhoods.
March seemed to be a tipping point. The hyperprogressive Council of the District of Columbia, in a city that had become an embarrassing carjacking hellhole, passed an array of anticrime measures. Oregon’s Legislature voted to reverse the state’s catastrophic three-year experiment with drug decriminalization. San Francisco voters approved two measures proposed by, of all people, Mayor London Breed, to ease restrictions on policing and require drug screening for welfare recipients. The results in Los Angeles County’s primary for district attorney strongly suggest progressive George Gascón will be voted out in November.
In all these places, the reversals by elected officials are driven by the prospect of voters’ turning them out of office. That is the U.S. political system trying to right itself.
In California, a safety coalition has collected about 900,000 signatures to reverse parts of Proposition 47, the state’s now-notorious 2014 decision to reduce some theft felonies to misdemeanors. This week, the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority appeared sympathetic to overturning a Ninth Circuit decision that bars cities and towns from enforcing vagrancy laws. Though the case emerged from Grants Pass, Ore., which is trying to ban homeless encampments, about three dozen elected officials and organizations in California filed briefs arguing that the Ninth Circuit’s ruling made cleaning up the streets almost impossible.
News stories since the start of the year have noted that many private companies are rethinking policies on DEI, partly under legal pressure, such as the Supreme Court’s decision last year to strike down the use of race in college admissions.
Some in the corporate DEI movement thought they were immune to restraints. No longer. Companies are rediscovering that the constituency most needing inclusion is their customers. The loudest shot across the bow came last week, when Google fired 28 employees after some staged sit-in protests at its New York and California offices over a contract with Israel’s government. Google’s firing statement describes “completely unacceptable behavior.” No one saw that coming.
All this adds up to a nascent counter-revolt against America’s lurch toward self-destruction. The exception is elite U.S. universities. Their leadership has seen itself as answerable to no one and politically immune.
Robert Kraft, a Columbia grad and owner of the New England Patriots, said this week he will no longer give the school money “until corrective action is taken.”
If big donors ever regain control of these so-called selective schools, a suggestion: Firing the president won’t close the barn door. Instead, fire the admissions office. What a tragedy to think how many serious high-school students were rejected by Columbia, Yale and NYU, edged out by nonuseful idiots whose chosen major is the political structure of re-education camps.
Someone has to be a lagging indicator, and these schools are it.

Elena Dawson: The Art of Artisanal Fashion
Today's blog post marks a special moment for me. Not only because it's my first on Shifting Patterns, but also because I deeply admire and enjoy the work of this designer. So much so that my wife and I even got married in her garments. Today, I want to introduce you to Elena Dawson.
Tumblr media
Elena Dawson, a London-born fashion designer for menswear and womenswear, keeps much of her personal life under wraps. There's no existing website anymore, and her former blog is no longer accessible. Only a Instagram account with a couple of posts and a contact email serves as a point of contact. It all somewhat reminds of the enigmatic Paul Harnden, doesn't it? But we'll get to that later. She studied Art and Fashion Design at the University of Brighton and worked as a seamstress after completing her degree. At that time, she said, "I draw on the knowledge I learned at the tailors still now in the way I make clothing."
In 2000, she co-founded the clothing line "Paul Harnden Clothiers" with her ex-partner Paul Harnden. She was an integral part of the design, concept, and business until 2009 with Paul Harnden, who was primarily known under the name "Paul Harnden Shoemakers" until then, when she decided to establish her own clothing and shoe label in East Sussex. Her studio is located there as well. Despite Dawson's departure, Paul Harnden's ready-to-wear collections continue to this day. Since 2009, the brand has naturally grown, but Dawson still produces her clothes and shoes herself, supported by a small team. Everything is produced in-house in multiple studio spaces, but all is handmade.
Tumblr media
The aesthetic of Dawson's work at Paul Harnden and her own brand has definitely evolved over the years. Paul Harnden, who is now known not only for his shoes but also for his blazers/jackets, coats, trousers, and shirts, has a rather clean cut and neatly sewn edges. On the other hand, Elena Dawson has a rather rough look and is known for her unfinished seams with dangling fabric scraps. It's sometimes hard to describe, but she has a very romantic, poetic, Victorian look that partly reminds me of Tim Burton movies.
When I put on one of her beloved blazers, I often feel like a part of Bertolt Brecht's Threepenny Opera, almost like a wardrobe from the 19th century. I own 2 blazers (linen and wool), 1 linen shirt, 2 pants (linen and cotton), and silk accessories from Dawson. My wife has a mix of a coat and dress. All her clothes are labelled with the classic "Elena Dawson - Made In England" label and the washing/material information written in her really unreadable handwriting with a Sharpie.
Tumblr media
The coats and blazers (mostly) feature beige/white cotton lining, and the classic look, often seen online, is achieved by rolling the sleeves backward, exposing the lining through the open seams. She works with a dress form, sculpturing everything, and only uses natural materials. Her favorites are English wool, Indian cotton, Irish linen, and Chinese silk. She describes her work as follows: "When you work on alterations you are really tearing the guts out of the garment, performing a sort of autopsy—you really get to see a garment at its most vulnerable point. Observing this state of semi-deconstruction in the making of a garment or shoe is what I like to retain in my finished work."
You'll rarely get the chance to buy her pieces online, as there are hardly any retailers offering her items online. She mentioned: "We don't do much press or social media work and we don't sell online at all. I'm not against that. It's just not the brand's main job." Elena Dawson limits the maximum order quantity and carefully chooses her retailers. She prefers to keep the brand small, and even on classic online platforms like Grailed, Vestiaire Collective, or eBay, you won't find many of her items used.
Tumblr media
I highly recommend visiting a retailer near you for the experience alone and trying on the clothes in-store. In my case, it's Harvey's in Berlin. However, the most well-known point of sale is probably Dover Street Market in London, with whom she has a strong relationship, as Dover Street Market has actively supported her brand from the beginning, granting her a significant presence there. In Tokyo, I was also able to find her pieces at DSM and at the Comme des Garcons Pocket Store.
The result is garments full of personality that evolve over time alongside one's own personality, incomparable to any other looks consumed and worn nowadays. Each piece, crafted by her hands, is unique, and I'll tell you, the first time I wore an Elena Dawson blazer at Harvey's in Berlin, it resonated with me. The look, the weight, the fit… it felt like a second skin, and over the course of 2 years, seeing how it aged with me, it became more like an extension of myself each day.
Tumblr media
Here's to Elena — may your artistic journey continue to inspire and captivate for years to come!

Mods: The Progressives
Background on the 1960′s fashion world:
When you think of the 1960′s you most likely think of the fashion associated with Mods like shift dresses, mini skirts or go go boots as well as fashion icons like Twiggy, Jane Birkin or Nancy Sinatra. Between  the 1950′s and 1960′s there was a transition in fashion as in the 50′s fashion was focused on French designers and was controlled around the wealthy elite. But with the new decade there was the creation of youth fashion where designers focused more on what young people were wearing. The cycle of fashion changed. It went from designers being copied by retailers to sell to consumers but they were taking inspiration from people on the streets and basing their design off of them. We also saw a shift in fashion capitals, London was fashions new muse, in particular Carnaby Street and in the Soho area in general.
Notable designers of the decade would be Mary Quant, Ossie Clark, Paco Rabanne, YSL, Givenchy and Andre Courreges to name just a few. Designers worked with man made materials to create their clothes and experimented with synthetics such as PVC and Polyester. Boutiques were made popular by Mary Quant setting up her first boutique in 1955. This was so that customers could combine items whilst still being accessible in urban environments like London.
Their seems to be a debate on who first created the mini skirt between Mary Quant and Andre Courreges when I was researching but some come to the conclusion that Andre created it whilst Quant popularised it. Breakfast at Tiffany’s was known for the black dress designed by Givenchy and created what we now know as “The Little Black Dress.” Now the most popular 60′s icons would be twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Jean Shrimpton and Peggy Moffitt. However, people fail to mention Donyale Luna in that list, even though her impact has been important to the culture we know today. She was the first black women to appear on the cover of British Vogue and coined the first black supermodel. She also was reported as Andy Warhol’s and Salvador Dali’s muse. I recommend looking into her story.
Mods in the 1960′s:
Mods derived from the word modernists were teenagers from the baby boomer generation who’s families had benefited from the economic boom after WW2 in Britain. It was also a way to escape from the political issues that were going on at the time as they were seen as “adult problems” as it is reflected in the emphasis on being or dressing childlike as a divergence from adults. There were 3 stages of 60′s fashion. The early 60′s was the introduction of the ‘new look’ showing the new boxy silhouette that contrasts with the hourglass body type of the 50′s. Then there was the mid 60′s when the mini skirt and shift dress is introduced. In the late 60′s garments were more flowy, often associated with the hippies movement. This style was also influenced by south Asian clothing with pieces such as the Afghan coat coming from it as well as many patterns inspired from Indian clothing.
Bands like The Who, The Beatles and The Small Faces were influenced by this style as The Beatles were known for wearing skinny ties which were popular at the time. They were commonly associated with vespas as they were sleek and clean but also fast. A lot of teenagers preferred to go to coffee shops that opened late or jazz clubs. The style had evolved from their ancestors of the Teddy boys and ‘50s Betniks. Men’s style was influenced by suits from the Edwardian era as well as those of the French and Italian kind which were sharp and tailored. They also wore turtle necks and heavy jackets to survive UK winters.  The women also wore clean lines and bright colours and controversial above the knee hemlines (Knees! How scandalous, How horrifying!)  At the time they were seen as progressive which on reflection can seem quiet shocking for how far we have come today, even though today is far from perfect. The style to some extent was seen as quiet androgynous with women adopting short hair styles and were becoming more independent as the second wave of feminism influenced ideas of women in the 1960′s as women believed that they should build a life outside of the home. This style was quiet popular to say it was a subculture but it did also clash with the equally popular rocker crowd of the time in England.
When writing this I thought back to trends have realised that the 60′s in fashion has forever impacted culture but the mods can still be seen today in terms of trends with bright pastel colours and mini skirts being a forever staple. Although now I believe that there has grown to be subcultures but also an emphasis on personal style. There are so many icons from this decade that I wish I could all mention and explore. Not only in fashion but in music as well.
Hey guys, sorry it’s been a while, been focusing on school. I hope you are all doing well. Thank you for the love on my last post, I really appreciate it!!! Hopefully I will post more soon.
Lots of Love,
~Siren~ <3

1, 11, 14, 19 and 20 for the end of the year ask! MWAH
Something you want to do again next year? GO TO THE ZOO Oh and go to a wedding with you and babe WHICH WILL HAPPEN Ö Favorite book you read this year? OK Nona the Ninth came out this year so that's on top for sure. BUT I've read so much, and almost everything was good! Like, The Traitor Baru Cormorant just now, it's such a sharp fictional story about the destruction of imperialism and the price of saving what you love (and queer. Poly even!!!) And a lot of teh Rivers of London Series (I think of those I enjoyed the Abigail-centric one the most. The foxes are incredibly entertaining) What’re you excited about for next year? The books I'm gonna read! For example Leigh Bardugo's one coming out soon. Very probably getting a proper summer vacation (as in: several days off in a row during summer. Sth I didn't get this year) Continuing our weekly Hour of Cleaning - we are so powerful now! Like adults! Playing more video games on my new laptop. Moffit Proffit! My next burst of creative energy. I don't know when, but it WILL come and it'll be fun! What’s something you learned this year? Huh Some neat new bookbinding skills I picked up from my incredibly able coworker. That I'm good at retail despite hating every minute (except stocking shelves. I was good at that AND enjoyed it) That, to a degree, it is in my hands to make time feel wasted or to make it sth from which I derive joy (I'm talking about my commute time here) I am good at my job apparently? I managed to score a reeeally attractive position even though there was lots of competition from all over Germany. I don't feel this truth in my soul, but rationally I know I did it. Wow! EMployael! How to stay on top of household chores (yes, at 31. Better late than never XD) And that Orang Utans like to share an enclosure with otters #blessedknowledge

Time for a random nail art thread because if I spend too long thinking about other things I'm going to lose it. (6/24/22)
Let's talk about Stamping.
Tumblr media
SO... I have a new favorite tool. The Creative Shop stamper. If you've ever tried to do stamping on your nails and it hasn't worked very well, join the club. Clear stampers are easy to see placement on but often don't pick up well, especially at first. Moyou London's XL clear stamper is all right and does okay with a lot of polishes, but it's still nowhere near the Creative Shop for stickiness and pick-up-iness. The free ice cube stamper you get from Maniology works okay if you prep it with a quick swipe of acetone the first time, but can be difficult otherwise. The Born Pretty stamper I have will be reserved for french tips, it's garbage for stamping.
The Creative Shop's swiper card is also excellent, very flexible but not too flexible. By contrast, Maniology's card is okay, and Moyou London's is too stiff. The flexible card from TCS cleans the surface perfectly without taking polish out of the grooves.
I've thus far tried Maniology, MoYou London and Born Pretty stamping polishes. Of those, I prefer the Born Pretty polishes, with Maniology in second place and MoYou London a distant third. Some of their polishes are fine. A couple just don't work at all.
For stamping plates, if you have a good stamper, it doesn't matter so much where you get them. I have plates from Moyou London, Born Pretty, Maniology and the Creative Shop. I wouldn't use The Creative Shop plates with any other stamper because the lines are very very fine, but if you're doing an order, you might as well get both, because the lines are very detailed and they have some unique designs.
I find myself returning to my Moyou London plates the most, with Maniology a close second, mostly because they have highly specific plates for things like Pride manicures and gorgeous geometrics, but basically get stamping plates when you get other stamping supplies, and get them on sale. I spend up to about $4 per plate on them, only more if I need a very specific plate at a specific time. (they usually retail for about $8-10 per plate.) My exception is The Creative Shop, which is a Ukrainian company, and I pay full price there (don't use the coupon code) because they donate their profits to the cause in Ukraine.
As for learning to stamp, I learned everything I know about it from two sources: My Simple Little Pleasures (Colette) and KelliMarissa on Youtube. With Colette, if there's a technique you want to learn, look for her long videos from her livestreams, where you can see the entire process in real time. Her tutorials skim through a lot of stuff, which is fine once you have the hang of it, but watching the real time tutorials can help when you're first starting out. This one, for example, shows stamping with a Moyou London stamper, polish and plate. The quick version is here. The advantage of the long version is that you get to see cleanup in real time, which is a vital thing to learn. Kelli also has a tutorial or two on cleanup.
I found it incredibly reassuring to know how much cleanup people do. I generally use Colette's method, latex on the tops of the fingers and scotch tape on the sides. My favorite latex for this is from Nailhoot because it isn't perfumed and is cheap. They also have a glitter-safe nail polish thinner that can fix clumpy/old polishes completely. (Like, bring them back from almost solid.)
But even with the best prep and the best technique, some cleanup is always needed. I've tried Holo Taco's cleanup brush, Born Pretty's cleanup brush and E.L.F.'s concealer brush and mostly I prefer the ELF brush because they all last about the same amount of time and it's cheap. The HT and BP brushes are slightly more precise when new. They all get a little fuzzy over time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left image shows the cuticle difference when cleanup is done. (two close-up images of the same thumb, rainbow glitter vertical gradient polish with a stamped art deco black design that looks like a wrought iron gate. The left image has cleaner cuticles than the right image.)
If you look closely, you can see where the lines of the stamping are a little incomplete. This was done with the Moyou stamper and Born Pretty polish. I'd see if I can do this exact stamp again at some point with the stamper from The Creative Store.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco is extending their ban on street vendors on Mission Street for six more months. This ban comes after at least 60 days of efforts to discourage illegal operations on that corridor as part of their initial 90-day ban.
"Six more months - I don't know what I would do," said Manuel Soltero, Mission Street vendor.
Soltero is one of at least 100 street vendors legally permitted to sell on Mission Street. When we met him last week, he was counting down the days for the ban to expire. Monday, he was heartbroken.
"I feel bad because that is how I pay all my bills and my rent," said Soltero and added, "In the street, we sell a little more."
RELATED: San Francisco Mission vendors making '$10 a day' due to 90-day street vending ban
The impact on vendors is clear. Inside the "Tiangue," a location rented by the city for 40 vendors to sell - there were only two.
Both vendors were disappointed they can't go back outside on Mission Street by the end of this month.
"Some days I sell $10, another day $20," said Ana Nunez de Martinez, Mission vendor.
In late November, the city prohibited street vending so they could work on pushing out unpermitted vendors who were blocking sidewalks and participating in illicit activities.
Two months into the ban, the city said their efforts worked; 56% of businesses surveyed on Mission Street said the street was safer. On Monday, the mayor took the ban a step further.
"In light of how many challenges we've had around safety, is to keep this going as we try to work through Sacramento to get some changes to the policy to address fencing. We want to be able to support mom and pop vendors and that is what we have always done but we want to make sure that it's done safely," said Mayor London Breed, San Francisco and added, "This is necessary in order to be able to address a lot of the crime and in some cases the violence that occurs as well as retail theft in San Francisco."
Elizabeth Aguilar manager at La Corneta Taqueria likes the change, but is conflicted.
"We have seen a positive change. Streets are clean now," said Aguilar and added, "For the people who had permits, I don't think it's okay for them. Everyone including us need the chance to work."
The Public Works director said they are set to continue enforcement seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. but she acknowledged that after they leave unpermitted vendors continue to take over some sidewalks.
"It allows us to reset the conditions. We have seen vast improvement when we are out there but the minute we are off. If we have a shift change or change equipment whatever it may be - we see people taking advantage of that and moving right back in. I want to emphasize those are folks who are fencing illegally they are not the legal vendors," said Carla Short, director of Public Works.
RELATED: SF businesses say Mission St. is 'safer,' but vendors are struggling during 90-day vending ban
In the meantime, street vendors like Manuel have received $1,000 in financial aid from the city's office of Economic and Workforce Development, but he says all he wants is to do is go out and sell again
"They were saying 90 days. Now it's 180 days and then? I don't know," said Soltero.
San Francisco's Public Works department is considering to extend inspector hours during the six-month ban.
"We are looking at the potential for some night shifts," said Short.
