A Tribute to Robots of My Life — Part 1

I'm drawing robots that've influenced my life! Since we're starting in chronological order, here's the first three, mostly from my earlier childhood. Each are named, with their background and timeframes added! Ramble under the cut.

HOOO boy! So! This started because I started reminiscing on just how many robotic/synthesite characters I love. It's been a lifelong theme with me. So why not do art of every single major one?

Tiny is where it started for me. Little Robots was something me and my siblings all grew up on. There were so many reruns of that show, lol. Tiny is so joyous and whimsical, it's hard not to enjoy drawing him. And I really did enjoy drawing him! Precious baby boy who's done no wrong.

As for Zane, I specifically picked his S4-S7 era design, because it's the most nostalgic to me. It's what I really remember making me appreciate "chrome-faced" styled robots. And that was when I watched Ninjago the most! I've sort of fallen out of touch with the series, but no matter what, Zane will have a space in my heart.

Technically, NIMROD isn't a robot. He's a sentient supercomputer from the Cold War and he's a maths teacher. But shh. Let us just appreciate this sassy old man. Ever seen a fridge give you diabolical side-eye? He was the most difficult to draw, and far too large to fit fully in the frame, so you're getting the perspective of a Strange Hill student who fucked their maths class.

As a full-time student i'm getting pretty low on funds again, my previous landlord has also decided to hit me with a £250 fine (which is being disputed dw)

I'm open again to take on 5 mixed-media commissions! I typically take animal comms (i love drawing bugs, birds and fish!) but I'm now open for character + furry stuff again too! These will range from £20 to £45 depending on how complex your idea is! (this is a heavy discount from my regular pricing)

New character I made based off the Roboraptor, one of my favorite toys as a kid! Beloved <3

found this WowWee Roboraptor at a thrift store. There were actually two of them on the shelf. According to the sticker it came from RadioShack.

Something had really gnawed one of the claws and there was green paint, and it was full of dust, so I took the whole thing apart and cleaned it thoroughly. The design is pretty cool.

There are too many things for me to list. There's hidden buttons everywhere, and this board. I have never seen a toy PCB have trim pots in any decade. What is there to adjust? And a giant exposed copper diamond. And a blob chip, on a breakout board with labelled pins. Doesn't that cost more? This thing is mechanically and electronically complicated for a toy, and there seem to be a lot of corners uncut. Very interesting. Also there are so many different kinds of screw that you have to go to great lengths to keep them organized.

After cleaning it I made an attempt at retrobrighting the plastic. It may have done something. I 3D modeled and printed a new claw, and put it on the arm. I might paint it later. There was also a broken spring anchor that I fixed.

Now there is an app to control this guy. But it relies on specific hardware and an older Android version. I found this on GitHub

Which contains raw IR data for the basic direction controls, and later they figure out how to decode all the signals. I tried transmitting with one of my ESP8266s, but had no luck. However, I found I could transmit the raw signals with a Flipper Zero through the CLI, and I put them in an IR remote file. Now I have a controller for it, though I can't control the moods or anything.

I still wonder what's up with that PCB. With the chips so easily accessible, maybe I can do some hacking?

Tbh this is way more fun for me than if I just bought this toy new and it worked. Buying it damaged with no controller was like getting a free puzzle
