My thoughts on BOWSER VS EGGMAN

This was easily my most hyped matchup thus far. Knowing that we were getting Bowser Vs Eggman this year, I was definitely more excited for this compared to Bardock Vs Omni-Man.

This matchup carries a fucking legacy with it. These are the two most notorious video game villains of all time, and the chance to see them actually bash against each other is something that, for Death Battle, has been a long time coming.

But was the episode good and did it live up to the hype? Let's see.

Everything is under the cut as per normal, because I will be spoiling the episode:

Okay. Short answer?

Yes.

Yes it did.

You want to know what my biggest regret for this fight was in general? The fact that I didn't think to grab a goddamn bucket of popcorn before I watched it because MY GOD.

I!

JUST!

WATCHED!

CINEMMMAAAAA!

I'm gonna talk about this in the order that I normally talk about this, which means I'm gonna start by talking about the analysis, but...to be perfectly honest, I don't really CARE about the analysis this time, lol.

I think it's because it's honestly VERY hard to come by someone who DOESN'T know who either of these guys are and what they can do. Like I said, they're easily the two most notorious and well-known video game villains to ever exist. Even if you're not a gamer, no doubt you know who Mario and Sonic are, and by extention, you should also realistically know who Bowser and Dr. Eggman are.

With that said, I didn't really have a problem with either of these analyses besides the fact that they're a little hard to follow. They were intuitive, but it also just kind of felt like STATS STATS STATS NUMBERS MORE STATS MORE LORE STATS LORE LORE LORE!

Besides the overabundance of lore squishing and stat squishing, it's all good and kind of fun, especially in the editing.

Also, for Bowsers segment, it surprises me just how little time they spend talking about Kamek, despite how in the post-analysis, Boomstick mentions that Kamek is one of the largest reasons why Bowsers army triumphed.

And in Eggman's analysis, they brought up the Hard-Boiled Heavies and...I didn't even see them in the fight the first time I watched it.

Most of the limelight in terms of the minions was given to Kamek, Metal Sonic, Bowser Jr. and Sage, and that's kind of what I wanted anyway, but still, why bring them up if they're not going to show up?

And I expect this, and this isn't a nitpick at all, but there are several points where they talk about resources that don't really matter, because they're never actually used in the fight. They CAN use everything, but we'd be here forever if they did, it ultimately comes down to what's their best kit, and who's best kit is better.

But with that said, I will be coming back to this in the post analysis because there's something else that's kind of important that I need to mention.

Either way, what's most important to me with the analysis and post analysis is that bost combatants are respected, and made out to be as powerful as they can be, and for this battle, that was done very well.

Even listening to the stats, it didn't give me a clear indication of who was going to win in the end, and I actually think that's a good thing because it makes me more hyped for the fight.

Okay, NOW we talk about the fight! YES YES and more YESSSS!

I just want to take a moment to talk about the animator for this fight, MORO. With these analyses, I don't really talk about the actual animators behind Death Battle, because I treat all of them with an equal amount of respect, and I will only talk about the actual animator if the battle itself stands out.

And trust me. THIS stands OUT!

I said in my previous analysis of Joker Vs Giorno that I was really hoping that MORO would blow it out of the park with his battle, because that's what I cared about most of all, and holy fucking hell he DID IT and he DID IT WELL!

MORO first started working with Death Battle in Season 10, and no doubt bringing him on to work on the show was one of the best decisions that Death Battle have made in their entire run. Bill Cipher Vs Discord, Gojo Vs Makima, and Stitch Vs Rocket are just a few of his previous battles, and all of them were hype as fuck.

This one is EASILY the most hype though. The way everything happens in this fight, well...I could break it down and...you know what? I think I WILL!

Especially considering that...well, I can't speak FOR him, of course, but I get the feeling that MORO really loved animating this fight, because the thing I wanted to say about the post-analysis is that it features fully-animated scenes of the alternate outcomes, and a post-battle scene of Eggman's forces signing up for Bowser's army, which we haven't seen in YEARS.

I doubt MORO NEEDED to make these scenes, but he still did it because he cared so much about exploring these alternate outcomes, and covering everything that they discussed in the analysis, so they could go over all of them in the post analysis.

Because there are so many ways this fight could have gone, and thanks to this gigachad of an animator, we got to see all of them.

Okay, but the fight itself, and what we DID see in the MAIN sequence. Yeah...It's GODLY!

Something I absolutely loved about this fight was that going into it, we all knew that this was going to be an all out battle of armies, and everyone leading up to this was "This is less of a battle, and more of a war."

And goddamn it FELT like one!

The ambiance of this entire fight, from beginning to end, felt so goddamn chaotic and...honestly FRIGHTENING! Like, this goes above and beyond just the simple cartoonish antics of the Mario and Sonic series. This fight is fucking GRITTY, and EMOTIONAL! With stuff like the grey sky, the copious amounts of destruction that comes as a result of the fighting, the rain, the ambiance, etc.

And no, that's not me memeing. This generally felt like a short war flick, just with silly superpowers in it. There's genuinely a climactic and emotional weight to this fight, and one thing I noticed upon rewatching is that this lacks something that Death Battle is famous for, and yet it still manages to be a fantastic battle anyway:

Blood.

The lack of blood in this episode is pretty surprising, because when the characters die, they die in ways that replicate their deaths in the original games; i.e. kind of just popping out of existence. Even when Metal Sonic runs Bowser through post-transformation, there's no blood. Bowser just collapses to the ground.

And I actually don't mind it!

I genuinely think that even if this is a war, and it feels like a war thanks to the ambiance, if there was loads of blood, it would actually take away from the experience for me. The lack of blood doesn't reduce the impact of what's going on for me, and I think if there was this much gore, they'd be trying too hard. They were trying to make a spectacle of Mario's arch-enemy and Sonic's arch-enemy and their respective armies brawling each other, and they damn well succeeded.

This is very much backed up by the voice acting from everybody, which in general is very well done. Only three characters; Bowser, Eggman, and Sage, (Metal Sonic gets I think ONE line) speak in this. I don't actually know who voiced Sage, but they do a very good job, but even more importantly is Arthur Romeo as Eggman.

I don't know if Romeo was intending to go this route, but I really like that his Eggman impression is more reminiscent of Deem Bristow instead of Mike Pollock. I love Mike Pollock as Eggman, don't get me wrong, but Deem Bristow (for those who don't know, Bristow is the one who voiced Eggman in the Adventure games) really works for this fight because it's not the kind of scenario where Eggman would be the kooky villain that he is in a lot of the modern games, where it's kind of funny to see him fail.

This fight is treated VERY seriously, and the voice really works for it. As for Bowsers' VA, Zack Watkins (an animator who has been with Death Battle for a long time now, with his first animated fight being Batman Vs Captain America) his voice is pitch-shifted because...well, it HAS to be, because you can't really reach that low gruff voice if you don't. But when he DOES get a good line, he sells it really well. The highlight for me is Bowsers rage after Junior gets whomped by Metal.

The fight admittedly starts very weirdly, even if it's pretty funny. I think what was supposed to be going on is Eggman tricked Bowser into thinking he was marrying Peach so that he could get all of his forces in one place to wipe them out at once, which is admittedly cool in concept, but for me at least, I didn't get that on the first watch. It felt more to me like Eggman pulled a prank on Bowser, then announced that he was going to take over the Mushroom Kingdom.

Also, I know that people weren't very happy about the Snapcube reference, but...what's the problem with it? It's a neat reference, but you're not supposed to linger on it.

But yeah, in case I haven't sold it hard enough yet, this fight is brilliant from the establishing shot that shows the two armies and when they launch themselves at each other, right until the end when Bowser deals the final blow. MORO absolutely KILLED IT, and I CANNOT stress that enough.

Like, genuinely, there was so much stellar animation, and so much emotional weight, power, and feeling to this fight that it genuinely made me tear up a little, and I'm not joking. Like I already said, this was CINEMA, there is no other way to express it.

Side note: I genuinely wasn't expecting Infinite to be in this fight, but its hilarious how he shows up for about...10 seconds, does his bullshit, then dies almost immediately, and I...do NOT care, lol.

Honestly, had Infinite been in the fight any longer than he was, I might not have liked it as much. So to have him here to establish how Eggman has the Phantom Ruby and little more was honestly the perfect way to go about it, especially since we get a brief "clash" (I'm hesitant to call it that because King Boo basically just one-taps him) between Infinite and King Boo with their similar abilities.

And I love how in this scene, you can really see the difference between Bowser and Eggman in that, instead of trying to find a way to fight back against Infinite's control, Bowser is instead using his dark magic to protect his minions, and it's up to King Boo to take Infinite out.

That doesn't only show me how much Bowser cares about his minions like they're his family, but also that he TRUSTS them, because to me, it felt like he knew he couldn't take out Infinite without sacrificing his men, but trusted King Boo to do it.

Both Bowser and Eggman are written masterfully in this episode, and I'm glad because they are already such phenomenal characters on their own, and to show both of them for who they really are inside is wonderful, especially if it's done in a way that is this subtle that it doesn't take away from the action.

Just...GOD I LOVED THIS EPISODE!

I don't want to go into a full breakdown, because we might be here for a while, but beyond this opening sequence that shows how both of these sides are treating this war, here's a list of other moments in the fight that I think were absolutely godlike. And keep in mind this is just a FEW stand-out moments for me personally:

Metal Sonic's transformation into Neo Metal Sonic, and the step he does towards the camera before he pounds Bowser's ass.

The scene where Bowser Jr. turns Bowser into Fury Bowser, and Bowser's "SHOWTIME...!" as he transforms. As I said, even if his voice is pitch-shifted, and even if he lacks in the dialogue department compared to Eggman, when Zack Watkins delivered a line, he delivered it in a pristine package with a nice little bow wrap.

Sage throwing a legion of robots at Fury Bowser, and Kamek building a war of pipes to block it - Absolutely mindblowing choreography.

My absolute favourite moment in the fight: Metal Sonic Vs Shadow Mario, being a nice callback to Mario Vs Sonic, and Bowsers reaction when Junior gets knocked to the floor and is badly hurt. The rage in his voice and the blast he lets out that absolutely DECIMATES not just Metal Sonic, but creates a black hole that wipes out most of Eggman's fleet is so Dragon Ball-like.

Bowser shielding his ENTIRE ARMY against the Death Egg blast! THIS is the moment that made me tear up! Like, how could you NOT root for Bowser after this!? The guy absorbed the full blast to prevent his minions from getting annihilated, to the point where it completely shed his skin off his body and almost killed him, but he held his ground because he would rather have DIED than let his army; the people he CARES ABOUT, get wiped out by Eggman. And then the motherfucker comes back swinging anyway and ENDS that bald bastard!

Eggman's death isn't climactic for the death itself, but for what Bowser does to him during the sequence, as well as the actual setting. Again, the animation and choreography for this episode is godlike, but this shot at the end when Bowser is reassembling himself as Dry Bowser ready to deal the final hit, it's important to note that Bowser has his son at his feet, and his minions rallying behind him. They are in the middle of a warzone, many of their comerades have died, and yet they are STILL WITH HIM! And as for Eggman, he has no one. Not even Sage is there anymore. And as Bowser sucks him in for the final blow, Eggman exhausts all of his options, and Bowser counters all of them. Bowser's final line might as well have been "YOU'RE FUCKED!" because yeah, he just was, and Bowser let him know it regardless. (Also, it's revealed in the end that Kamek also survived, despite being knocked into the horizon by Metal Sonic.)

Alas, despite all this grandeur, I have one minor complaint. Granted, it's not a huge one, and it doesn't affect my overall opinion of the fight, but I still feel like I should bring it up.

I understand that it's next to impossible for every single one of these minions to get a time in the limelight, but what was important for me going into it was that Junior, Kamek, Metal Sonic, and Sage all got some time in the limelight to absolutely kick ass.

And most of them did...except Sage.

It's not like Sage did nothing, but compared to Bowser Jr. and Metal Sonic especially, she didn't really do an awful lot beyond throw things, block an attack, and activate the Death Egg when Eggman told her to. Metal was doing most of the fighting and yeah, okay, Metal is built for combat while Sage isn't, but Sage can still fight. I would have absolutely loved to see Bowser's son throw hands with Eggman's daughter though.

Again, it's not enough to completely throw my opinion to the wayside, but had Sage been given more to do, that would have made this episode absolutely perfect.

And overall, my least favourite part about this fight, genuinely, is that it ENDED!

Like, I KNOW these can't go on for more than a few minutes but I didn't want this fight to stop. I could watch a whole MOVIE about these two armies going at it.

More specifically I would watch it if MORO was the one animating it. But again, the guy has done MORE than enough.

And of course, the last thing that I have yet to talk about is the music.

My god the music, especially when it hits in the fight. Remember how I said my favourite moments in this fight were when Bowser rages over Junior, then blocks the Death Egg? A big part of what made those scenes so phenomenal is that the music went full-capital HARD for those scenes!

Like...Brandon Yates! HOW does he DO it!?

I genuinely think Brandon Yates is one of the best music composers of all time, and that's not even an exageration. I love all of the work he does for Death Battle and I love all the work outside of it. I love that the Death Battle crew are lucky enough to have found this man because he, and Therewolf Media too, are a massive part of why the Death Battle fights are so enjoyable to watch. Music makes these fights so good, and the modern episodes are so much better compared to the old episodes where they had to use other audio.

Also, I'm not gonna ignore Victor Borbo and Tyler Anderson who sung the vocals for the track, because they together are, medium, 50% of the reason why it absolutely slaps.

Final thoughts: When this fight was coming out, I genuinely expected that Eggman would win it. But now that I've actually watched this episode, and I got to see Eggman and Bowser at their full potential and doing everything they can to destroy each other, I actually think that had Bowser lost, I wouldn't have been as satisfied.

As they said in the post analysis, Bowser actually cares about his minions. Eggman doesn't, except for Sage. And as I pointed out, there are several points in the fight where Bowser actively tries to protect his minions over trying to take out Eggman's. When he defends them against the Phantom Ruby and Infinite, and then when he shields all of them from the Death Egg. And they REPAY that loyalty and kindness in the end, and are with Bowser during the final blow.

I was rooting for Bowser, but betting Eggman, but after this whole fight ended, I don't care what anyone else has to say about the stats, or whether things add up or not. That Koopa King EARNED and DESERVED THAT W!

It's honestly hilarious how I'm both a Persona fan and a JoJo fan, and Joker Vs Giorno didn't captivate me NEARLY as much as this spectacle did. It's not that I think Joker Vs Giorno is bad; I rewatched it a dozen times. But this fight is hands down the best fight they've done in YEARS! I think it even beats out my top contenders from Season 10.

My last note is the next time:

Okay, I wasn't expecting the 2024 finale to be such a meme matchup, but...I know that this was a thing that people kind of wanted to see, but I'm genuinely curious HOW they scale this with any kind of logic.

My current bet is on the Imposters because they actually kill things and have stuff in their bodies and equipment that are designed to kill, and the Fall Guys are just stupid beans that get knocked around a lot.

So my biggest thoughts about this are 1) how the fuck to you stage a fight between them, and 2) What kind of stats do you calculate?

Like, as a meme, I like this fight, but now that it's an official episode? I don't know, man. I really don't know how to feel about it.

Teaser was hilarious though.

Final score for Eggman and Bowser? 10 out of goddamn 10.

Sonic AU Maria Robotnik Concept

AU Lore (tw animal experimenting mentioned, character death):

Maria Robotnik in this AU lived on earth as a ballet dancer in junior high. During a summer family trip, a car crash had taken the lives of her parents and little sister, leaving her the sole survivor. In order to help her recovery, Maria was given a pet hedgehog to help with the mental trauma from the incident.

After the incident her grandfather (Gerald Robotnik) took her in. Unfortunately, Maria did not get along well with her grandfather, and things came to a head when he had taken her hedgehog for testing at his lab. Although the hedgehog was ill at the time, its final moments was spent being poked inside and out by the heartless doctor.

After going missing a few days after this incident, her body would later be found holding her hedgehog. Her cause of death: Heartbreak.

The Trigger collab animation came out and it’s the best thing Transformers has done in the current decade.

Truly a love letter to Transformers from G1 to EarthSpark, it squeezes in everything it possibly can from most media. However the catch is that it’s only animated media and the live action movies, the comics (any assorted manga, Marvel, Dreamwave, IDW & Skybound) aren’t referenced, while some Japanese exclusive stuff gets a lil’ bit more attention (understandable since it’s, y’know, Japanese fans being nostalgic about the anime they grew up with).

Transformers Go, Q-Transformers, and the Beast Wars anime got particular attention.

This shot of Liger Megatron and Green Lion Lio Convoy is especially cool.

I think initially I was expecting a Trigger animated greatest hits from select moments from each show, and while they still technically do that in spots…

It’s mostly a mega crossover with different characters interacting otherwise.

And it’s all the better for it.

I mean where else are you gonna find TFA Optimus about to smash Masterforce Overlord’s face in?

There’s no real narrative, it’s just random cool shots though the closest thing to a framing device is the PV opening with Vector Prime looking down on Cybertron across all time lines.

Regarding EarthSpark’s contributions to the short, they’re minimal. The Terrans and Mandroid don’t appear at all, which is a little bizarre.

ES Megatron appears among the other Decepticon leaders instead of being with ES Optimus on the Autobot leader side.

You’d think Mandroid would be there next to BWII Galvatron instead, but I guess not. Sadly they omitted RiD15 Steeljaw too, instead using RiD15 Megatronus Prime’s floating head.

SatAM Robotnik voice: Ah well, life is not perfect.

The main ES rep are the Maltos.

This just reinforces ES needed to be 2D, because they actually look good. Roche’s style doesn’t work in 3D.

Anyway the human cast they chose for this final shot amuses me.

Love seeing my favorite Clays being included. The lack of RiD Steeljaw (G1 Steeljaw did appear with Lio Junior and RiD15 Aerobolt though) is forgiven.

Anyhow, the specific use of the Clays, the (S3) Witwickys, the Maltos and the Onishis (this is especially funny since Koji’s mom never met her universe’s Optimus) is somehow very random, but also kinda appropriate. Like I get Spike and Dot’s families, since it serves as bookends, but the Clays and Onishis still feel a bit random. Still, including both Robots in Disguise families is a nice touch in my book!

The short ends with a different bookend as mentioned.

What starts out as G1 Prime & Megs transitions to ES Prime & Megs shaking hands. The old with the current series. It works~! I admit I’m surprised they didn’t include TFONE somehow. I know it’s technically not out yet, but there’s enough material to have had Orion and D-16 have some kind of tussle. It would’ve been an interesting way to tie it into the above scene and this one:

When it comes to general rep, the stuff that gets the most focus is G1, Beast Wars, Animated, & Galaxy Force. Cyberverse doesn’t really get anything beyond the leader shot, but there is this awesome but very random shot of Croaton over looking Holi’s Rescue Patrol walking on a beach littered with the dead bodies of the generic Decepticons from “War Dawn”.

Sucks to be you guys.

It also occurs to me the Rescue Bots cartoons appear to be omitted along with BotBots, but that might partly be due to them not having Japanese releases? I’m not sure, but it’s funny how Q-Transformers is acknowledged of all things, but not Heatwave or Burgertron. Maaaaybe that’s for the best on the later…

Still the PV is a blast and is pry the most earnest passion project that GETS Transformers vs what we’ve been getting post Aligned cartoon wise.

I still hope this leads to a proper TF anime series made by Trigger, like what happened with Gridman. We need a return to good 2D animated TF shows and not more CGI slop like WFC or S2 ES. That Beast Wars and Machines are still superior despite being retro by today’s standards says something…

The catch however is the original video is region locked…

I love this so much I've been imagining it in my head and I don't know, Eggman gently placing his Pebble on Stone's palm and it's the smallest lil pebble ever like you said (thinking about my own pebbles in my room that my lil bro gave to me, they got names too and are indeed small HDJDH)

I wanna draw it as something small or a comic but it will have to wait a bit pipipi also thinking about even the badniks treating Pebble the Pebble with care, like they're cleaning or something and they just pick her up very carefully and dust around and then place her on her spot again 😭

So Shadow was formed from a cauldron, but what does his life look like before his adventure begins? 👀

Glad you asked! Infodump about the ultimate pretty pink prince's backstory under the cut:

Much like in canon, Gerald creates Shadow to help find a cure for Maria. Unlike canon, though, Gerald in Barbie AU is the sorcerer king of the Robotnik kingdom, and as such is able to fund his own research. GUN doesn't exist here.

Aside from his obvious personal stake in saving his beloved granddaughter, Maria is the crown princess, next in line for the throne. If Project Shadow succeeds, it won't just save the princess, it'll save the royal lineage!

Maria's illness is first discovered when she's only an infant (I'm thinking it also killed her parents, which is why she's raised by her grandfather and is his heiress). It takes five years for Project Shadow to finally come to fruition, when all of Gerald's work culminates in a sweet little hoglet with black fur and unique pink stripes being born from his cauldron.

Gerald looks upon the creature that he's created, and soberly realizes he has created a life. Therefore, this creation is his son. And any son of the king is therefore a prince. Hence, he was dubbed Prince Shadow the Hedgehog.

Shadow's birth turned the palace laboratory into a nursery. His early years were spent studying his vitals, marinating in potent magical baths, and being treated as well as you'd expect a young prince to be. When he outgrew his cauldron around the age of five, he was moved into his own bed chamber (beside Maria's, of course) that he still resides in to this day.

Maria and Shadow were as inseparable as you can imagine. They were raised together as siblings. Maria was raised as a future queen, and Shadow was raised as her protector, her savior. But to her, he was simply her beloved baby brother (he's only five years her junior).

Maria's influence greatly rubbed off on Shadow. He didn't smile nearly as much as her, nor giggle, but she imparted on him her belief in making their kingdom happy. She also shared basically all of her hobbies with him - horseback riding, gardening, astronomy - as well as her aesthetic tastes.

He also took on hobbies of his own! Being the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow was naturally trained in ways that would hone his physical capabilities. Namely, ice skating and ballet.

Shadow took interest in Maria's gorgeous wardrobe early on, and she was more than happy to help him develop his own sense of style. It's began with him trying on her dresses from when she was little, and progressed into his own wardrobe coming to look more like what one would expect of a princess, than a prince. He hasn't worn trousers to a formal event since he was 8 years old. Who is to tell the Ultimate Lifeform how to dress?

Shadow had a strong sense of purpose from an early age. He was raised with the knowledge that he wasn't born naturally, but created for a specific purpose. His birth is hailed as a miracle of magical technology. A modern legend to his subjects, and a curiosity to his (mostly human) peers in the upper class. Gerald and Maria made him feel like an equal, but those outside of his immediate family often made him feel like an outsider in what was meant to be his own community. He particularly never liked the way Lord Ivo looked at him like he was more a lab rat than a cousin...

Everything changed on the night of his fifteenth birthday. As his birth was celebrated, as he was hailed as a living miracle who would save the kingdom, he felt overwhelmed and at a loss. He had all these expectations placed upon him, but feared he couldn't live up to them. Outside of knowing he was immortal and... different... he didn't think anything was especially "ultimate" about him. He felt no great power that supposedly ran through his veins... only fear that he'd fail.

He didn't voice it until Maria sequestered him away to stargaze away from it all. There, she listened to his woes and reminded him that even if you cant see the light, it is a shadow that shows you where to find it. She asked him that they promise something to each other: to give all the people in their kingdom a chance to be happy.

Not even an hour later, did their jealous sorcerer cousin enact his plan to steal Maria's place in line for the throne. Wielding a scepter running on stolen power, Ivo blasted Maria right before Shadow’s eyes. She disappeared in a burst of cyan.

Shadow was traumatized, and Gerald was devastated. Ivo was banished, but Gerald was set on never letting this happen again. With Shadow as his only remaining child, he'd do everything in his power to keep him from harm.

Shadow was technically in line for the throne now, but as the years progressed and Gerald discovered new ways to prolong life, he managed to unnaturally lengthen his own. Rather than being treated as a future king, Shadow was treated like a fragile treasure to be locked away.

Over the course of fifty years, Shadow grew into a young man (and stayed that way; yay immortality) but was never treated as one. He was forbidden from leaving palace grounds, hardly received visitors, and was given no indication that this would ever change. To go from being treated as the Ultimate Lifeform, to a breakable doll to be placed in a room, collecting dust... it was quite the blow to his confidence. The distance between Shadow and his father only grew as years stretched into decades.

Shadow busied himself by becoming quite the renaissance man. In addition to honing the skills he already possessed, he also took up painting, singing, and multiple musical instruments (his favorite being the piano), as well as becoming rather well-read. He also developed quite the rebellious streak, sneaking out so often that an alarm system was set up in the palace just to make catching him easier.

This is where we see Shadow when his story truly begins. Insecure, estranged from his father, and isolated in a gilded cage for fifty years. Surely, his extremely sheltered life won't bring him any problems when he's plunged into an adventure that puts his resolve to the test?

After The Death Battle

Bowser: First, I'd like to hear three cheers for my son and your crown prince, Junior! He was a real MVP in this battle!

The Koopa Troop cheer for Bowser Jr, who smirks smugly.

Bowser: Oh, and three cheers for Kamek, for being loyal, by my side, and for snagging that snazzy Phantom Ruby. And for giving me back my skin. AH HAHAHAHAHA!

The Koopa Troop cheer for Kamek, who crosses his arms and huffs.

Bowser: And now that Sage has made repirations, it's time to hold up my end of the deal. Kamek, bring in his corpse.

Kamek: Are you, uh, sure about this, my liege? I mean, he DID try to kill you. AND your son...

Bowser: Yeah, but...

Bowser: ...I can't let a little girl grow up without her father.

Kamek: Aw...I mean, she's a computer program, so-

Bowser: Kamek!

Kamek: Fine, fine.

Kamek conjures up the remains of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik with his magic before pouring a bottle of juiced 1-Up Mushroom.

Eggman: ...

Eggman: !

Eggman: Huh?! I-I'm alive?! H-how?! And...and why?! I- *sees Bowser* GAH!

Bowser: Listen up and listen good, Omelet Man. You pull this kinda stunt again and I'll make you wish you stayed dead.

Eggman's Reaction

To say that Doctor Ivo Robotnik, or better known as Eggman, was shocked to see the results of his Invasion has ultimately ended in his own defeat by the hands of Bowser, The King Koopa, was an understatement.

During his bout against him and his entire army, his army did fairly well against Bowser’s, with him surprisingly using a decoy very early on the battle with Infinite The Jackal coming along to try and destroy Bowser’s army with the Phantom Ruby, in rather quick succession before King Boo sent a Thwomp on his way, not killing him, but enough for him to question his existence, it did lead to Metal Sonic to come shortly and practically tore apart the army on his own.

While Sage, Eggman and Metal Sonic worked in tandem with each other, the combination of Kamek’s Magic and Chance Time, Bowser Junior’s help with a magical rod and making sure that his dad survived, and Bowser’s fury and basically reincarnation, made them lose at the end even if they were insanely close to death.

While Eggman did die at the end, with only Sage, Cubot, Orbot and Infinite being alive at the end of the war, he was revived.

To Eggman’s shock, it was by a magic mushroom that brings people back to the death after the son of Bowser, Bowser Junior, gave it to Sage as he didn’t want someone to lose their dad even if they were an evil person or tried to wage war on their side.

Apparently, death was as common in their world like brushing their teeth as it happened several times, with Mario coming back after being defeated by Sonic and vice versa, Shadow coming back to life twice to beat his favourite anime character, Knuckles after eating Donkey Kong’s bananas, Luigi by a punch through a pipe by Tails, Wario after being blown up by a fat penguin and even Bowser when he died to a dude named Ganondorf.

It was a weird thing, though he wouldn’t complain about it.

Eggman was told that they weren’t able to invade the Koopa Kingdom ever again, however he was allowed to come there if he wanted to make an alliance, which considering there were several beings with Magic there, and even Junior rolling in a machine that shouldn’t work, it honestly could work if they want to rule several planets or even the Universe together.

Heck, they could even beat that blasted hedgehog and that plumber once and for all.

Right now, Eggman was rebuilding Metal Sonic from the previous data that he has on him at all costs should he be destroyed as he was basically one of his kids with Infinite sitting on a chair, listening to Cubot and Orbot chattering with an irritating fashion, which to Infinite, was always.

“How are you feeling, Infinite?” asked Eggman as Infinite groaned.

“I am feeling better than before, but not enough for the feeling of hurt to subside.” answered Infinite.

“Oh suck it up. It couldn’t have been that bad.” said Eggman as he connected the wires, ignoring Cubot and Orbot.

“I lost to a Thwomp, powered up by my powers. Of course I would be upset!” yelled Infinite. “I should have created illusions to the Deadly Six, or Chaos, or to those plumbers.”

“If you decide to get a second round with that King Boo, go ahead.” said Eggman with Infinite grumbling, still not over the fact that was how he got defeated. Eggman then noticed someone wasn’t there.

Eggman looked around to see just 4 people around, “Hey, have any of you seen Sage anywhere?”

“Shouldn’t you know where she is?” asked Cubot as Eggman shook his head.

“No, I was too busy rebuilding Metal from scratch with only his data that I probably didn’t hear from her.” explained Eggman, “I haven’t heard from her for a few hours now, do you know where she is?”

“Sage? No, haven’t seen her.” said Infinite as Eggman turned to Cubot and Orbot.

“Probably having lunch?”

“You don’t eat, Orbot. Neither you Cubot. Nor does she.” said Eggman as his patience was coming to an end.

“Oh! I remember! She said that she was going to the Koopa Kingdom with a sort of playdate with Junior!” explained Cubot with Eggman’s eyes nearly popping out of his skull.

“Ahh, yeah him! Yeah, they are probably having a good time.” said Orbot, but he couldn’t continue as Eggman screamed at the top of his lungs.

“WHAT?!” he yelled as they turned to him, “SAGE IS WITH BOWSER’S KID?!”

“Wait, that brat? Wow, her standards must be low to go after him.” said Infinite.

“YOU WERE AWARE?!”

“Partially. Didn’t know that Sage was going with that brat. Although the signs were there, I just didn’t bother to care.” said Infinite as Eggman wanted to attack him, but knew that would have been pointless.

Eggman sighed as he turned to the 2 robots, “Were you aware of this?”

“A bit? The most that I could remember was that after you were killed, we decided to defect from the Empire to join the K-” Cubot stopped once he saw Eggman’s expression, “I… Uh meant that after you were killed, Sage was devastated in more ways that an AI could have ever achieved. I mean we were robots, we felt grief for you, but we had to move on, but to see Sage’s reaction… it hurt to look at.”

Eggman turned to Orbot as he continued, “While we tried to get her to cheer her up, it didn’t work out, and even the Koopa Kingdom saw her reaction as she was floating around the entire Kingdom to try and find a solution, but either most tried to ignore it or stop her, Junior saw her and felt pain of what he saw.”

“He… felt bad for her?” asked Eggman, as he didn’t know how to react by that.

“Uh huh. We heard their conversation and even Infinite chimed in,” Orbot felt a massive glare coming from Infinite, “And heard that he felt bad for his dad to kill you, so he tried to make up to Sage by reviving you, which it did work. The thing is that Bowser allowed it since he didn’t like the feeling of a kid being alone without a parent.”

“....huh.” said Eggman as he sat down next to Metal Sonic. Unsure on how to react.

“With that and after your revival, they started hanging out a few times as gratitude of doing something like this.” explained Orbot.

“Even if he tried to kidnap Sage while you were away.” said Infinite.

“Well that is ni- WAIT WHAT!?” yelled Eggman.

“Yeeeaah… Apparently… Junior had a crush on Sage shortly after. And, from what he knows about his dad, he thought that kidnapping and trying to court her was a good sign of showing love.” said Orbot.

“I guess it runs into the family.” Cubot guessed.

“And you didn’t notify me?!”

“Doesn’t Sage teleport? Kidnapping her is useless.” said Infinite.

“I mean- She can.”

“That did happen and after a small conversation, he didn’t mean anything bad… even if it was morally questionable, so he went and asked a lot of people for advice, many times over, with varying results. However, after showing up with a clown car that he owns and asked her nicely compared to the other times, Sage eventually agreed for a date.” explained Cubot as Eggman tried to process things over.

Sage was to him his daughter, and even though she might not be his blood related daughter, she still meant everything to him and the same was for Sage as he was her father.

So the fact that Junior wants to be in a relationship with her, even if he wasn’t aware that his methods were less morally correct, was shocking to feel.

Eggman thought to himself, “Is this how it feels like when your daughter gets a boyfriend?” Eggman wasn’t sure how it was possible, and yet… he didn’t want to ruin his daughter’s happiness.

Eggman sighed, “I am going to talk to Bowser about this. You three, don’t touch Metal for now.” said Eggman walked off, letting Cubot, Orbot and Infinite to look at each other, knowing full well what they are going to talk about.

if i could do a sonic universe reboot i would make the sonic satam stuff and the sonic adventure stuff happen in the same timeline. hear me out: all we gotta do is pull a donkey kong junior. we need there to be two sonics without any time travel.

first half ("classic"/SatAM part)

Gerald Robotnik is an esteemed human scientist from Earth in his 60s, working on creating the ultimate lifeform ostensibly for the US government as a weapon but really to save his granddaughter Maria's life.

Gerald's son Julian, father of a child Maria and infant Ivo, is absent from Earth, having inherited Gerald's intelligence but, after living in his father's shadow, has turned mega evil in his 30s and has somehow given himself a one-way trip to Mobius - a planet that has solved all its social problems and has no need for military technology, making it an easy target to be conquered. he turns Mobius into an autocratic dystopia where only he and his robotic army holds any power. desperate to cosmically one-up his father, he keeps his given name a secret in order to be known simply as "Doctor Robotnik" to his subjugated citizens.

cue the Knothole freedom fighters ensemble of Sally Acorn, Bunnie Rabbot, Antoine Depardieu, Rotor the Walrus, and a young Charles "Sonic" the Hedgehog. a miracle occurs when the freedom fighters find a Chaos Emerald by chance, and "Sonic" uses its power to remove Robotnik from power, but not kill him - in a show of idealism, he shows mercy to Julian and decides that the Mobians should get the chance to put him on trial. this backfires when Julian gets ahold of some Chaos energy for himself, which he uses to flee back to Earth. given the urgency of his escape, the process by which he flees actually swaps him with his son, stranding a very young Ivo on Mobius.

interlude/timeskip

now back on Earth, Julian Robotnik goes crawling back to his father. the residual Chaos energy surrounding him (shaped by its last natural user, "Sonic") is scanned and partially replicated by Gerald, resulting in the creation of Shadow the Hedgehog. Gerald doesn't actually want to make a bioweapon and secretly puts power limiters on Shadow. when Julian learns of this, he blows the whistle to the government, resulting in the deaths of Gerald and Maria, and Shadow being placed into stasis. Julian is put in charge of the Space Colony ARK and turns it into a Chaos Emerald-powered superweapon, but has no method of returning to Mobius to actually obtain the Emeralds.

on Mobius, society is rebuilt basically as it was pre-Robotnik. the freedom fighters grow into adults and go their separate ways. Charles' younger sister gives birth to a baby blue hoglet, who is named Sonic after Charles' freedom fighter nickname. Charles and Sally adopt an orphaned two-tailed fox, who becomes very good friends with his nephew as the two grow up into their teenage years.

Ivo grows up too, learning of Robotnik's infamy and legacy as the most powerful force on Mobius since its ancient times.

second half ("modern" part)

you saw this bit coming. Ivo has grown up into Doctor Eggman and wishes to turn Mobius (either in full or in part) into his "Eggman Empire", but is constantly foiled by our good friend Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles "Tails" Prower, who are joined by friends Amy and Cream, and additional cast Knuckles and Rouge. though not seeing any of the action directly at this point, another major supporting character is our old (and now visibly aged) friend Charles, or "Uncle Chuck" as he's known now.

eventually learning of exactly how his father's downfall occurred, Eggman gathers the Chaos Emeralds himself to ensure his victory against Sonic and his friends, but even then is foiled... sort of. the machine meant to harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds transports everyone to Earth, a la the beginning of Sonic X. with our Mobian heroes now stranded on Earth and with Eggman beginning to learn of his family's earthly legacy, the events of Sonic Adventure occur.

once resolved, the cast returns to Mobius, including Shadow (wanting to leave his traumatic past of Earth and the ARK behind) and Eggman (what? that sneaky fucker).

the schemes of Eggman continue solely on Mobius as they did before. goodbye Earth forever, Eggman and his Sol Dimension counterpart Eggman Nega are the only humans Mobius ever sees again. the closest Eggman gets to his goal is building "Eggmanland" during the events of Sonic Colours.

aaaand scene. that's how i'd put it together. i almost hate to remove Uncle Chuck and Tails from SatAM and but i think it's the only way to reconcile the events of SatAM and the events of X/Adventure without making Eggman just like, Doctor Robotnik but after six years, which i really don't like because actual dictator Robotnik and cheesy villain Eggman are just way too different as characters.

also - and this part is vital - i wouldn't give the aged Charles lanky Modern Sonic proportions in his modern appearance. he's the Classic Sonic and he stays roundie and grows a grey moustache. one must imagine a short old Uncle Chuck at a lanky teenage Sonic's birthday party with the two of them enjoying chilli dogs together.
