Vodka, kilos of caviar and a Russian minder: Iron Maiden’s 1984 World Slavery tour behind the Iron Curtain

“At the time, the Iron Curtain was down and the opportunity of going there, we might make a significant number of people really happy by doing this,” says singer Bruce Dickinson, reminiscing with The Independent about this pivotal tour, launched 40 years ago this week, which took a prop-laden spectacle featuring a 30-foot mummified Eddie mascot to six cities in Poland and Hungary to promote their 1984 Powerslave album. “It wasn’t a political act at all. It was an act to go and entertain some fans. You can characterise it as a political act. When I was an undergraduate, there was no such thing as a non-political act. The act of taking a piss could be construed as political, depending upon where you did it. [But] sometimes people just want to have fun. They just want to rock. That’s what we were there for.”

i am constantly chasing the very high highs of raymond chandler's philip marlowe detective noirs. Human Target, a DC extended universe thing by Tom King and Greg Smallwood got real damn fuckin close.

i took thirty-five screenshots while reading these twelve issues. they are such a lush love letter to midcentury advertising. it luxuriates in period-typical stylized coloring in a way i do not see very often. i hope mr smallwood gets sucked silly every night.

one of the reasons for the tuesdayposts is to force myself to look at new things, bc sometimes i find shit i really like. i am remarkably unwilling to consume new things when i am not feeling good, even though new things i like are…not a keystone, but really up there holding together some arch in the viaduct of mental health or whatever.

anyway Christoper Chance is a man with a very specific skillset: perfectly imitating wealthy clients to lure out assassins. he takes a fatal does of poison meant for Lex Luthor and has about twelve days to solve his own murder before he dies. this is an EXTREMELY compelling reason for someone to haul ass through an entire noir novel in less than two weeks.

let's make some comparisons to other spy media i've seen in the last month. christopher reminded me a bit of loid forger from spy x family: same hypercompetent backup plans for backup plans and incredible disguise skills. im sort of...positively? fascinated by him, as opposed to the (also entertaining) train wreck of james bond's psyche slamming up against soft targets for two to two and a half hours. like there is womanizing in Human Target, but it is not the time-filling bond girl eye candy. do not worry, christopher FUCKS.

it is self contained within its twelve issues so i didn't have to read eighteen other crossovers and have encyclopedic knowledge of c- and d-listers from the silver age of comics. it was a very fair mystery. the twists and turns weren’t stupid. i know that’s not a terribly helpful observation but sometimes in a mystery…it takes a fucking stupid turn. most importantly imo it sticks its landing and understands that a noir is a subgenre of tragedy.

how’d i find it: has a pretty cover, stood out from the crowd on hoopla. americans, you probably have access to hoopla through your library!

@andmaybegayer referenced the youtube channel About To Eat in a recent mondaypost and i was so enthralled by this man's confident, dulcet, soothing and mustachioed tones. i had forgotten that i could in theory make french onion soup like myself. at home. soup season will not begin here for many months here and even then it's kind of pushing it, but i would like to eat some soup without melting!!!

overall About To Eat's recipes are a bit beyond my skill level and ability to prepare things in one sitting without joint pain but they are a display of competence i find very fun to watch.

pried some corrosion off one of the little brass decorative thingies, now it looks bad in a slightly different way

now this is a fun little record cabinet. i haven’t seen many pieces out in the wild that have that sort of vertical bullnose detail. makes me think of thirties waterfall dressers with their molded plywood rounded upper edges.

i can’t decide if the veneer on this piece is starting to really go (it is heavily crackled esp on the sides) or it was once owned by a smoker. the photo below is of the THIRD round of cleaning this front panel after upping the cleaning mix to a HEARTY 2:1 water/soap, and this was not the worst panel on the piece. mostly it really just smells like old wood? i don’t THINK the innards are cedar, bc that would be an odd choice for a record cabinet, but it is an oddly fragrant base wood.

there are some details that make me think it was never a terribly high end piece, or was maybe repurposed into a record cabinet? the veneer is quartered but somewhat indifferently matched, it has very indifferent nailhead finishing, and im not sure if the casters and record slots were later additions. i think the little door catches are original, but they aren’t magnetic yet which starts ruling out some later mcm. i would hazard this was made right before or right after wwii, but realistically it could be early thirties-early sixties. no makers marks :(

i will refinish this eventually. a bit nervous about how the front bullnoses might come out, i don’t really want to fuck around with veneer repair or like. grain painting. that’s for insane ppl and antiques dealers and i am clearly neither

Elizabeth II liked to drink a Martini before meeting guests when she was flying and always requested a particular type of mint sweet during take-off, it has emerged.

The late Queen also enjoyed following the route map while travelling.

Her flying habits are revealed in a treasure trove of memorabilia kept for decades by an air hostess who worked for British Airways for 28 years from 1970.

Elizabeth Evans, from Birmingham, served many famous travellers during her long career, among them the late Queen and Prince Philip during their 1989 tour of Singapore and Malaysia.

A collection of mementoes found in Mrs Evans’ study following her death contains confidential instructions on how to look after the royal couple.

The points of etiquette reveal that the late Queen liked a bowl of sugar-free Velamints beside her on take-off and that she should be left to doze if she was sleeping prior to landing.

She also preferred to use her own pillows, with her personal dresser advising on how to make up her bed.

Any guests joining the royals for dinner would be told what time cocktails were to be served in the royal compartment and the Queen would later be asked which wine she would like served with dinner.

“Her Majesty tends to like a Martini before her guests arrive,” the notes state.

Canapes were served with cocktails before the guests took their seats and staff were reminded that the late Queen must be served first.

One section of the notes is titled “Tips for Royal Compartment,” under which is listed: “Route map – Her Majesty enjoys looking at these.”

Members of the flight crew were told not to pass through the cabin and to restrict all noise.

The memorabilia, inherited by Mrs Evans’ niece, Jo Smallwood, is expected to fetch between £400-£600 when it goes under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers on August 20.

Charles Hanson, owner of the auctioneers, said:

“Elizabeth must have been extremely highly regarded by BA because she served some of the most important people in the world. Take that 1989 British Airways royal flight.

Her memorabilia includes confidential instructions on how to care for our late Queen and Prince Philip – right down to the sweets Her Majesty preferred on take-off.”

Velamints were launched in the US in 1977 and are said to have become president Ronald Reagan’s favourite mint.

They were dubbed “the Official Air Force 1 mint.”

Meanwhile, both the late Queen and her husband were known to be fond of a Martini, which they would typically enjoy before dinner.

In late 2021, a year before her death, it emerged that she had given up drinking on doctors’ orders.

She was said to favour a gin and Dubonnet at lunchtime, and a gin and vermouth cocktail before dinner.

Mrs Evans also crewed Concorde, the world’s first commercial supersonic airliner, which would fly at twice the speed of sound, during the 1980s and 1990s.

She kept signed menu cards and other paraphernalia relating to many of her VIP passengers, including Rod Stewart, Cliff Richard, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the late Patrick Swayze.

Mr Hanson noted that although the late Queen had flown to Singapore and Malaysia on BA, she had closely followed Concorde’s development.

“Elizabeth’s archive sweeps us back in time to the 1970s, 80s and 90s when flying on Concorde was a luxurious privilege enjoyed by the wealthy jet-set,” he added.

“Celebrities flocked to use its services and carrying royalty was the norm. Service had to be first class.”

He said of the late Queen:

“She enjoyed her first supersonic flight in 1977 and used the aircraft for state visits.

The Queen of the Skies was seen as fitting transport for the Queen of the realm."

“In 1991, Charles and Diana, then the Prince and Princess of Wales, flew supersonic during a trip to Oman and Pakistan."

“Elizabeth gathered mementoes throughout her career. Her memorabilia captures the life and times of Concorde at its height and the detail that went into luxury travel with British Airways.

No VIP wish was too small to be accommodated. Even smoking was permitted on board back then.”

Ms Smallword, 53, a retired police officer, from Solihull, West Midlands, said:

“I was aware of some of the things Elizabeth had kept from her career with BA but nothing on this scale.

She married late in life, moving to Devon and finally Hermanus, in South Africa.

The objects were found there in her study following her death at the age of 70 in 2017.

I came across them when I travelled to South Africa to arrange the funeral.

Having found this treasure trove relating to my aunt’s career and experiences with BA, especially the fantastic trips on Concorde and serving the Queen, I found it sad that none of it had seen the light of day.

I believe this collection is a little piece of history that should be shared and enjoyed by somebody.”

Mrs Evans was awarded a certificate to commemorate the time she served the royals on British Airways flights.

She also amassed signatures from the likes of Warren Beatty, Virginia Wade and Billie Jean King, which will also be sold by Hansons.

On this day in March 18th 1985, Iron Maiden played the last of four legendary shows at Long Beach Arena in Southern California. Thanks to the foresight of Steve Harris and Rod Smallwood, the band hired a professional crew to record the performances, some of which appeared on Live After Death later that year (the other tracks on the album were taken from their gig at the Hammersmith Odeon). Often described as one of the greatest live albums of all time, the performances at Long Beach provide a rare glimpse of Maiden at their very best. 🤘

Iron Maiden and Z2 Comics Announce Piece of Mind Graphic Novel

The record that features all-timers such as "The Trooper," "Flight of Icarus" and "Revelations" vividly come to life in individual chapters dedicated to each of the nine songs on the historic release. Frontman Bruce Dickinson, an author in his own right, even contributed to the "Revelations" chapter, a particularly special moment as the song was his first official songwriting credit with Iron Maiden.

Iron Maiden and Z2 Comics have announced a graphic novel based on the band’s Piece of Mind album, arriving November 21st. Below you can get an exclusive first look at the special alternate cover featuring Eddie as “The Trooper” and its accompanying collector’s card. The graphic novel celebrates the 40th anniversary of the legendary 1983 album, which contains all-time Maiden classics such as “Where Eagles Dare,” “Die with Your Boots On,” and “The Trooper.” With a solid track record of heavy metal collaborations with Anthrax, King Diamond, and more, Z2 Comics pulled out all the stops for Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind. The book features stories based on each of the album’s songs, including writing from frontman Bruce Dickinson (“Revelations”) along with an introduction penned by longtime Maiden manager Rod Smallwood. “When the idea of a Piece of Mind 40th Anniversary graphic novel first came up, I felt it was the perfect medium to expand outside the confines of the songs and to create new storylines and new dimensions through short form narrative and imagery,” said Dickinson in a press release. “With ‘Revelations,’ it allowed me to add more layers and dimensions to the lyrics and add a new twist.” He continued: “Equally as exciting was bringing together some of the top writers and illustrators in the industry who are all actual fans of the band, to add their own creative ideas inspired by the songs, Eddie, and the album itself. Z2 did a tremendous job in pulling this all together to create more than just a graphic novel, it’s what I consider a work of art.” The novel was edited by Rantz Hoseley. Other writing contributions include Steven Grant (The Punisher), Tony Lee (Doctor Who), Ivan Brandon (24Seven, Viking), Sacha Gervasi, Antony Johnston (Atomic Blonde), Leah Moore and John Reppion (Conspiracy of Ravens), Brian Posehn, Chris Roberson (iZombie), and Alison Sampson (Hit-Girl). Illustrators include Carson Thorn (Batman the Barbarian), Damien Worm (The October Faction), Francesco Dossena (Dylan Dog), Christian Rosado, Staz Johnson (Rogue Trooper), John Pearson (Mindset), Michael Avon Oeming (Powers), and Danijel Žeželj (Luna Park).   “The Trooper” Cutaway Edition of the novel retails for $40 is limited to 666 copies and can be pre-ordered via Rockabilia. Roderick Charles Smallwood (born 17 February 1950) is an English music manager, best known as the co-manager of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden and US metal band W.A.S.P. with his business partner, Andy Taylor, whom he met while studying at Trinity College, Cambridge, he founded the Sanctuary Records Group in 1979, which became the largest independent record label in the UK and the largest independent music management company in the world until its closure in 2007. Prior to managing Iron Maiden, Smallwood managed Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.
