Just for fun, I was looking up the early history of comics, and I discovered that some 19th century swiss guy named rodolphe topffer was super influential on the art form. so i clicked on the guy's Wikipedia page and
his self-portrait is so rad??
Tumblr media
Like, it's not just me, right? Look at his cheeky little look over his glasses. Surely I can't be alone in thinking this is an extraordinarily sick, rad, and even tubular self-portrait by the usual standards of 19th century self-portraits
If he had better hair, I'd say he was Crowley in disguise

Today I learned: The creator of the comic book as we know it today was a young, aspiring, artist with degenerative vision impairment
youtube
[Image description: YouTube thumbnail featuring a bald white man with a close-cropped beard and mustache holding a red, cloth-bound book open in front of him, and looking at the camera with an astonished expression. A caption in the upper left corner reads: "This Book Changed History," with an arrow pointing to the book.
Eye contact. Auto-generated captions.
Summary: a mini-biography of Rodolphe Töpffer, the son of an 18th C. Swiss artist who was expected to follow in his father's footsteps, when his deteriorating vision forced him into other work instead. He opened a boys' boarding school, and created the first comic book stories to entertain his students.

The Sickly Cryptogam (1860) by Meryon.
I'm quite taken with this find. It's a cryptogam, that is one of the most primitive plant forms. The etching is by Meryon. Rodolphe Töpffer also used the word cryptogam in his text "Histoire de Monsieur Cryptogame".
When I first saw the etching I thought it were two tongues, something that might have inspired Svankmajer.

Töpffer Rodolphe - Nouvelles genevoises (tome 2)
Tumblr media
Sequential Art Revolution: A Journey Through the History of Comic Books
Tumblr media
Comic books, with their vibrant visuals and captivating narratives, have captured the imaginations of readers for generations, serving as both entertainment and cultural artifacts. The history of comic books is a tale of innovation, creativity, and cultural evolution, reflecting the changing tastes and attitudes of society.
The origins of comic books can be traced back to the 19th century, with the publication of sequential art in newspapers and magazines. Early examples, such as Rodolphe Töpffer's "The Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck" (1837), laid the groundwork for the medium, employing sequential panels and speech balloons to convey stories visually.
However, it wasn't until the 1930s that comic books as we know them today began to take shape. The publication of "Famous Funnies" in 1934, considered the first true comic book, marked the beginning of the Golden Age of comics. During this era, iconic characters such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman made their debut, captivating readers with their heroic exploits and larger-than-life adventures.
The popularity of comic books soared during World War II, providing escapism and entertainment for soldiers and civilians alike. Publishers churned out a plethora of titles featuring superheroes battling Nazis and other villains, tapping into the patriotic fervor of the time. This period also saw the rise of influential creators such as Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Will Eisner, whose contributions helped shape the medium and define its visual language.
In the post-war years, comic books underwent a period of decline due to various factors, including the rise of television and the implementation of the Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory body established in response to concerns about the content of comic books. However, the medium experienced a resurgence in the 1960s with the advent of the Silver Age, characterized by innovative storytelling, complex characters, and social relevance.
The 1980s and 1990s witnessed further evolution and diversification within the comic book industry. Independent publishers such as Dark Horse Comics and Image Comics emerged, offering alternative voices and genres outside the superhero mainstream. Groundbreaking works like Alan Moore's "Watchmen" and Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" challenged conventions and elevated the medium to new heights of artistic and literary acclaim.
The 21st century has seen comic books continue to thrive in both print and digital formats, reaching new audiences around the world. Superhero films and television shows have brought characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the X-Men to the forefront of popular culture, further cementing the enduring appeal of comics as a storytelling medium.
Moreover, the medium has become increasingly diverse and inclusive, with creators from marginalized communities bringing their voices and perspectives to the forefront. Titles like "Ms. Marvel," "Saga," and "Black Panther" have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, reflecting a changing landscape that embraces diversity and representation.
In conclusion, the history of comic books is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of visual narratives. From humble beginnings in the 19th century to the multimedia juggernaut of the 21st century, comic books have captivated audiences with their colorful characters, imaginative worlds, and compelling stories. As the medium continues to evolve and adapt to new technologies and cultural shifts, its legacy remains as vibrant and enduring as ever.

Before Comics: We've Been Telling Stories with Pictures for a Long Time
In terms of human culture, comics as an art form is relatively new. “The Yellow Kid” started in 1895 and Rodolphe Töpffer first published his work in 1833. So, about 200 years. Yet if we broaden our scope and use the term sequential art, then the time frame opens up dramatically. We leave print behind and start to look at sculpture, weaving, and painting. And this is what I want to do with…

Mailman Misfortunes 1-31-24 “Obadiah Oldbuck: Delivery Rider“
Anyone ever wonder what happened to Obadiah Oldbuck after he made his way to America in 1842? Well according to The Township of Inspiration history, he dipped his toe into mail delivery! lol - this is my tip of the hat to a guy who is considered 'the father of comic strips' aka Rodolphe Töpffer, he would be 225 years old today if he were still alive!

Comic page researches and ideas
Tumblr media
I made this comic page or the panel on photoshop for the project for the movie called 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' as that I have the idea for the page of Mrs Lovett introduction or appearance in this panel which I have made four boxes to show the ideas of what is going on which is the first box is Sweeney Todd comes to the bakery to see Mrs Lovett's appearance for the first time as she give meat pie to Sweeney Todd and as well a drink for him when She explained about what happened to Sweeney Todd's wife when he was away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What is a comic?
Comics is a medium used to express ideas with images, often combined with text or other visual information. It typically takes the form of a sequence of panels of images. Textual devices such as speech balloons, captions, and onomatopoeia can indicate dialogue, narration, sound effects, or other information.
Who invented comics?
The Swiss schoolmaster Rodolphe Töpffer (1799–1846) is usually credited with the invention of the comic strip, publishing seven of what we today would call comic books or, more recently, graphic novels. He drew his first, The Loves of Mr.
How do you describe a comic book?
A comic book is a bound collection of strips, each of which typically tells a single story or a gag (joke) in a few panels or else a segment of a continuous story. Most of the more popular newspaper comic strips eventually are collected over a varying period of time and published in book form.

In 1933 Swiss comic artist and master Rodolphe Töpffer published 'Histoire de M. Jabot' (Story of Mr. Jabot). It was the first of seven satirical plays and tells the story of a middle-class man trying to break into the upper class. Initially Töpffer only created comics in his spare time, to entertain family and friends. They found his stories so funny that they convinced the professor to publish his works. Töpffer's books were extremely popular and played an important role in the early development of comics. His 'Histoire de M. Vieux Bois' ('The Loves of Mr. Vieux Bois'), from 1837, was the first comic to be published in the United States in 1842.
