I find the way you approsch this is really heartwarming but I wholeheartedly disagree. I have not read Honey and Clover but I been around those situations enough times and seen how people behave and what it does to them and I gotta say remaining close friends with her while still harboring romantic feelings would be very unhealthy, even though thats what we ideally like to see every time. But as we both know this is not a fling. Those feelings have been there for a very long time and consumed a lot of his effort and time. I'm not saying he needs to cut off ties with her, he shouldn't because that could backfire. But there at least should be a good distance for a while, enough for him to try to "find himself" and try to occupy his mind, care and attention around other things and people romantically or otherwise. After building himself up enough independently then he can try to rebuild a close friendship again. This would be the best not just for him but also for her. Seeing him confident and independent and got his head in the right place and seeing people around him that he cares for (even romanticay) and them caring for him would make her feel much better by 1)make her not regrett the rejection 2) make it much easier to interact with him and build a relationship without the idea in the back of her mind that she's hurting him or something.

I know you probably hate to see this, but this shit happens to both guys and girls and it's no one's fault(to be clear I don't blame chihaya at all, she done exactly the right thing by rejecting him right away), and I think your approach is kinda trying to have your cake and eat it too and it's just not something I would recommend to anyone dealing with this.

I guess we can agree to disagree about the best outcome of those situations, if anything. 😂 I used to have some really long-time unrequited feelings for a close friend myself, and at first it was pretty hard and painful to get over, but maybe my situation turned out better in the end than the ones you were witness to, and that’s okay, it’s just different! I feel like the opinion in general on this is going to be pretty polarized because everyone’s experiences are so varied, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

I do feel like the distance you’re talking about Taichi needing in order to find himself is what we’ve seen a depiction of since he left the club, though, and it’s almost been a year since then (if I have my Japanese academic calendar correct). We can see that those resolutions about how he wants to address his self worth, his insecurities, and his desire to keep playing or not are approaching. And true, that journey isn’t entirely over for him yet, but at the least I do feel like he and Chihaya need to start talking again (without beating around the bush) before that distance becomes so great that mending their relationship becomes unfeasible. I hardly think resolution between them is going to be an immediately conclusive thing; it’ll definitely take time and like you said, I imagine them being in different circles as they enter college will probably help alleviate that lingering tension. But I guess what I’m saying is that I do at least see that process beginning between them, even if it’s awkward and pained for a while. That’s how a lot of these situations start to begin with, and it’s not pretty per se, but if people do want to keep that close friendship intact despite the previous divide then they have to start somewhere. I don’t think Chihaya necessarily has to see that he’s with someone else to not feel guilty about rejecting him; more than anything I think she just wants to see that he’s happy with himself and what he’s doing, and that’s something he needs to achieve by way of self fulfillment in general, not necessarily a concrete romantic conclusion. But I do agree that that his happiness is something she may become more reassured of over time as she starts to see him gradually reintegrate himself with people, and I imagine that’ll be a really important focus of their college years.

Also, this is just now coming to mind, but I guess I might be more inclined to agree with your skepticism if Chihaya and Arata really do end up canon before the end of their third year; that would definitely be a blow to Taichi’s psyche despite all of the progress he’s been making and I definitely think he’d need a little more distance in that situation. But I don’t particularly feel that romance is a priority for her right now nor will be for some years while she’s focusing on karuta and her career as a teacher first, and I think that’s something Taichi has already learned to stop inadvertently holding against her. Maybe that’s why I feel more optimistic about the situation, I guess. If Taichi still had expectations for her to reciprocate if he tried hard enough or waited long enough, then I could definitely see how trying to reconnect with her at present would be unhealthy for him; but he doesn’t have those expectations anymore and is implied to be moving on from the idea of winning her heart, so I think that’s what sets the foundations for their friendship to be mended just a little more easily than the premise may have been prior.
