Questa mostra segna il ritorno simbolico di Umberto Tirelli al suo paese d’origine, ma ne attraversa nel contempo l’intera carriera, attraverso le sue stesse parole che descrivono l’amicizia con Romolo Valli e Gian Luigi Pizzi, con Luchino Visconti e Danilo Donati, con Piero Tosi e Federico Fellini. La storia della Sartoria Tirelli non si esaurisce però con la figura di Umberto Tirelli: la sua eredità di valori e di dedizione al lavoro continua tuttora, attraverso la collaborazione con i maggiori costumisti del panorama internazionale.

I have nothing against slowness in movies if it leads to a satisfactorily immersive experience, but Death in Venice is just languorous, taking its own weary way toward the conclusion promised in the film's title. Watching it patiently has some rewards: Dirk Bogarde's fine performance as Gustave von Aschenbach; the sometimes opulent, sometimes melancholy views of Venice provided by Pasqualino De Santis's cinematography; the handsome sets by Ferdinando Scarfiotti and costumes by Piero Tosi; loving glimpses of Silvana Mangano as Tadzio's mother; and great gulps of Mahler's third and fifth symphonies on the soundtrack. But the screenplay by Visconti and Nicola Badalucco carries no intellectual or emotional weight. Thomas Mann's novella is meant to be savored and reflected upon, but film inevitably carries us along with our expectations of action, and there is little enough of it going on anywhere but in Aschenbach's head to provide Visconti with something to shoot. He resorts to flashbacks: to the illness that causes Aschenbach to take his fatal trip, to the happy days of Aschenbach's marriage (Marisa Berenson plays his wife) and the devastating death of their child, to a visit to a prostitute who plays Beethoven's Für Elise on the piano, to the storm of cheers and boos at the performance of Aschenbach's composition (actually an excerpt from the Mahler third symphony) and an argument with a friend (Mark Burns) about his music. The beautiful young Tadzio (Björn Andrésen) clearly represents something that has been lost from (or never present in) Aschenbach's life, But Visconti never makes Aschenbach's obsession with Tadzio either psychologically or thematically convincing. In the end we're left with little more than Aschenbach as the aging gay man doomed to a lonely death -- a too-familiar trope.

Mitologia Sua figlia Europa era bellissima, Zeus volle possederla e per questo si celò sotto le sembianze di un toro e la rapì.

Agenore inviò i suoi figli nella sua ricerca[2][5] dicendogli di non tornare senza di lei. Nel corso delle loro peregrinazioni, questi figli fondarono città ovunque e così Fenice divenne il capostipite dei fenici, Cilice quello dei cilici, Cadmo si stabilì in Beozia costruendo Cadmea, la rocca di Tebe. Nessuno di loro però trovò Europa[2].

Ancora una volta ci troviamo di fronte a un grande film tratto da un grande romanzo e, francamente, non saprei dire quale dei due sia migliore. Di sicuro, Visconti ha saputo trasporre sullo schermo una fase cruciale della storia italiana, ma soprattutto siciliana. Una fase segnata dalla diffidenza da parte di un'intera società verso i nuovi ideali portati dal passaggio di Garibaldi. Una società che, pur acclamando i sopraggiunti conquistatori, manifesta tutta la sua renitenza a ogni cambiamento. Scenografia sfarzosa, attori in stato di grazia, Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale e Alai Delon su tutti, ma anche gli interpreti dei personaggi minori, come Paolo Stoppa, Serge Reggiani, Rina Morelli, Romolo Valli. In his attempt at an epic, Bernardo Bertolucci gives us many new and arresting things, but none perhaps more startling -- and ultimately more fatal to the film -- than Robert De Niro playing a passive weakling. The actor known for such aggressors as young Vito Corleone, for Travis Bickle, Jake LaMotta, even Rupert Pupkin seems crucially miscast as the padrone of an Italian estate who can't bring himself to take sides in the conflict between communists and fascists. The De Niro smirk is still there, but it doesn't seem to fit on the face of Alfredo Berlinghieri, who waffles even when his best friend, his boyhood companion Olmo Dalcò (Gérard Depardieu), is threatened by the fascist overseer Attila Mellanchini, played -- not to say overplayed -- by Donald Sutherland. Bertolucci crafts a relationship between Alfredo and Olmo that goes beyond bromance and somehow persists for a lifetime. They are nominally twins, born on the same day in 1901 as the legitimate son of the landowner and the bastard of a peasant on his estate. The film begins with the end of World War II and the routing of the fascists, then flashes back to their birth and boyhood, skips ahead to the end of World War I, the rise and fall of fascism, and concludes with a coda in which the elderly Alfredo and Olmo are still roughhousing. It's meant to be a capsule version of the 20th century -- the original Italian title, Novecento, means "nineteen hundreds." The film is never unwatchable, but its epic ambitions are undone, I think, by Bertolucci's instinct for melodrama at the expense of characterization. The villains, Attila and his companion Regina (Laura Betti), go so far over the top in their evil-doing -- Attila casually kills a small boy with the same coolness with which he slaughters a cat earlier in the film -- that they become almost comic. It's a striking turn in the wrong direction for the director who earlier gave us a subtly intricate look at the character of a fascist with Jean-Louis Trintignant's performance in The Conformist (1970). There are colorful cameos by Burt Lancaster and Sterling Hayden to be savored, and Vittorio Storaro's cinematography and Ennio Morricone's score help the film immeasurably, but the main impression left by 1900 is of a director who overreached himself.
