Ronald Eaglesham Porter (and why I hate him)
Ron Donachie: born 1956, Scottish actor. Big built, balding head, beefy, lovely voice. A man with a natural air of authority (and often plays policemen and prison guards).
Tumblr media
I mean, look at the man: broad shouldered, as masculine as they come, brutally handsome.
Tumblr media
Not a man you'd mess with. Just the kind of man who floats my boat, so to speak... Just look at those eyes.
Tumblr media
So why do I hate him? Simple: he's big, beefy, handsome, balding, has a great voice... Do I need to go on? Oh, yes, he can act as well. And he had a number 1 hit in the early eighties with The Flying Picketts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, how comes he gets it all? And, what's more, apparently he's a really nice man as well. With a very winning smile.
Tumblr media
And looks dashing with a neatly-trimmed beard. I mean... Jealous? Me?
Sorry, Ronald. You're definitely off my Christmas card list,,, probably... possibly...
Tumblr media
Oh, alright, then. I forgive you.

In 1879, The time traveling alien known as the Doctor (Doctor 10) and his companion Rose travelled back to Scotland where they found themselves helping Lord Robert defend Queen Victoria at his Torchwood Manor against heretic monks who had turned to following an alien race that caused a condition resembling a werewolf. While the Doctor and his allies saved the Queen, he apparently did not present himself well to her majesty so she decided to start the Torchwood Group (this is the first version, before the smaller version run by Captain Jack). The Doctor was both knighted and banished in the same day. ("Tooth and Claw", Doctor Who, vlm 3 TV)

Rebus reboot in Glasgow!
Tumblr media
ITV crime drama spotted filming reboot series in Glasgow (Image: Gordon Terris)
Richard Rankin was pictured on Byres Road today by our photographer Gordon Terris as production gets underway for the reboot of Rebus.
He was seen outside West End cafe Kember and Jones with film crews on Tuesday afternoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Based on the best-selling books by Ian Rankin, Rebus follows the central character, Detective Inspector John Rebus, as he solves various crimes in and around Edinburgh.
Outlander star Rankin will follow in the footsteps of John Hannah, Ken Stott Brian Cox, Ron Donachie and Charles Lawson to play a young Rebus.
The new series is said to be a "fresh and thrilling offering in the high-end crime genre" and follows 40-year-old Rebus as he finds himself at a psychological crossroads after an altercation with an infamous gangster.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Scottish actor said: “I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of Rebus. I’m a big fan of the series and Sir Ian Rankin.
“I feel very lucky to be given the honour of bringing such an iconic Scottish character back to TV screens and will give all I have to do it justice.”
Tumblr media
Sir Ian Rankin said: “Rebus has been a big part of my life for a long time now and to work with Gregory Burke to create a new story that sees him navigate life as a younger man in a contemporary (and ever-changing) Scotland has been a truly fascinating process.
"I’m very much looking forward to watching Richard bring the character to life – he’s the perfect fit for the role, and not just because we coincidentally share the same surname.”

Happy Birthday Scottish actor Ron Donachie.
Born Ronald Eaglesham Porter in Dundee on April 26th 1956  Ron might not be a household name, but is a weel kent face on our screens during the last 40 years or so.
He was educated at Madras College, St. Andrews and Glasgow University, from where he graduated with an M.A (Hons.) in English Literature and Drama in 1979. After a year working as a navvy, he joined the 7.84 theatre company for the play One Big Blow, in which the cast mimicked a traditional, colliery band by singing in six part harmony. The success of the play led to the formation of the acapella band The Flying Pickets, who had a Christmas number one in 1983. Donachie’s decision not to stay with the band and thereby missing out on their success has been described by him as “one of my more brilliant career decisions.”
Throughout the 1980s, he was a prolific theatre performer all across the British Isles,  now largely vanished repertory system. This afforded him the opportunity to act in many classical plays which are now rarely performed due to budget constraints and closed theatres. During this period, he appeared in over twenty plays at the Glasgow Citizens’ Theatre. Like many performers with similar experience, he considers this the happiest, most fruitful and most influential phase of his career.
That’s not to say he wasn’t on TV in the 80’s, firstly I would like to say he probably appeared in more episodes of Taggart than any other person, except the regular cast, clocking up five appearances all as different characters between 1987 and 2006.
The first thing I remember Don in was the brilliant Tutti Fruiti, with Robbie Coltrane, Richard Wilson and Maurice Roëves, he was also in 15 episodes of the old Scottish soap, Take the High Road as Duncan Strachan.
The 90’s saw his TV career really take off, parts in Taking over the Asylum, The Governor, Cracker and Looking after JoJo, as well as playing the Master at Arms in the Oscar winning film Titanic.
Into the new century and I think some of us will recall Don, in what I think is his most well known role as DCI Andrew Ross in the long running cop soap The Bill. Then Silent Witness, The Auf Wiedersehen Pet, and Stone of Destiny to name but a few. Ron also appeared in four episodes of the Edinburgh police drama Rebus, he had previously played the title role in the BBC Radio 4 dramatizations of the Ian Rankin books.
In the past few years Game of Thrones fans will have known him as Rodrik Cassel, or if you like last weeks birthday boy James James McAvoy in Filth, Don played the part of Hector. He was in casualty for a number of episodes, The brilliant mini series The Loch, and Deadwater Fell with David Tennant. Don also appeared in the Bruce bio-film Outlaw King as Robert Wishart, Bishop of Glasgow.
Ron was recently in the Aberdeen cop drama Granite Harbour and we will see him later this year in the gritty prison drama Screw, which was filmed in part in Glasgow.

Doug and Abi and their three children travel to the Scottish Highlands for Doug’s father Gordie’s birthday party. It’s soon clear that when it comes to keeping a secret under wraps from the rest of the family, their children are their biggest liability… Credits: TheMovieDb. Film Cast: Doug McLeod: David Tennant Abi McLeod: Rosamund Pike Gordie McLeod: Billy Connolly Gavin McLeod: Ben Miller Margaret McLeod: Amelia Bullmore Lottie McLeod: Emilia Jones Mickey McLeod: Bobby Smalldridge Jess McLeod: Harriet Turnbull Agnes Chisolm: Celia Imrie Doreen: Annette Crosbie Kenneth McLeod: Lewis Davie Jimmy Cazzarotto: Ralph Riach Sgt. Murdoch: Ron Donachie PC McLuhan: Ben Presley Lucy: Michele Austin Smokey: Jake D’Arcy Frazer: Ryan Hunter Beth Williams: Imogen Toner Françoise Dupré: Alexia Barlier Brent Howard: Eben Young Akira Kato: Sadao Ueda Police Spokeswoman: Kirstin Murray Photographer: Amanda Marment Film Crew: Music: Alex Heffes Director: Guy Jenkin Director: Andy Hamilton Visual Effects Supervisor: Ben Shepherd Cinematography: Martin Hawkins Editor: Steve Tempia Movie Reviews: John Chard: Life really is too short you know… What We Did on Our Holiday is written and directed by Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. It stars Rosamund Pike, David Tennant, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller, Amelia Bullmore, Emilia Jones, Bobby Smalldridge, Harriet Turnbull and Celia Imrie. Music is by Alex Heffes and cinematography by Martin Hawkins. “The truth is, every human being on this planet is ridiculous in their own way. So we shouldn’t judge, we shouldn’t fight, because in the end… in the end, none of it matters. None of the stuff” Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin spin off from their hugely popular sit-com, Outnumbered, to produce this funny, philosophical and moving picture. Tennant and Pike play parents of three young children, they are pending a divorce, but with Doug’s (Tennant) father, Gordie (Connolly), dying of cancer, the family head to Scotland for what will surely be his last birthday party. Hoping to put on a united front so as to not upset Gordie any further, nobody could envisage what was to happen next… It’s a film that some no doubt find easy to kick, such is the uncomplicated structure used, and the formula of messaging that drives it forward. Yet sometimes uncomplicated is all you need, and in this day and age of mega-buck blockbusters and soulless frat type comedies grasping at sex for laughs, this is a film of refreshing qualities. It’s superbly performed by what is a top notch group of adult British actors, who in turn are supplemented by three child actors so natural and engaging it makes you wonder if acting school is really needed? It’s obviously a piece that will resonate more with those who have been touched/stung by the thematics at work, while the comedy ticking away – with some truly great lines uttered – could seem a bit off kilter for the unprepared, but hopefully more will watch it, laugh and cry and ultimately realise that life really is too short for, well, you get the picture I’m sure. 8/10

The jungle book 1994 online

Geldman story by Yanover, Geldman, based on characters from “The Jungle Book” by Rudyard Kipling. Screenplay, Sommers, Ronald Yanover, Mark D. Executive producers, Sharad Patel, Mark Damon, Lawrence Mortorff. #A Buena Vista release of a Walt Disney Pictures presentation of a Sharad Patel production in association with Edward S. Ron Donachie Disney must tame a major marketing challenge - a title people associate with a children's story, which here comes across as an ambitious hybrid of "Greystoke" and "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." That means adults will have to turn out for this opulent, action-packed production, which, based on the recent track record of remakes, should prove an uphill battle, leaving homevideo as the most successful hunting ground for "Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book." Reviewed at the Avco Cinema Center, L.A., Dec. Camera (Technicolor), Juan Ruiz Anchia editor, Bob Ducsay music, Basil Poledouris production design, Allan Cameron set decoration, Crispian Sallis costume design, John Mollo sound (Dolby), Joseph Geisinger assistant director, Artist Robinson second unit directors, Greg Michael, David Ellis visual effects supervisor, Peter Montgomery stunt coordinators, Gerry Crampton, Ellis, Tim Davison head animal trainer, Steve Martin casting, Celestia Fox. Surprisingly, I just discovered this.
Fans will be excited to see Portman back on their screens, in his first TV role since Game of Thrones finished in 2019.
What they may not have known about the Scottish actor, though, is that his dad is also a big name in TV - and starred alongside his son in Game of Thrones.
Ron Porter, known professionally as Ron Donachie, may be best known for his radio voice - having starred in the main role of DI John Rebus in the BBC Radio 4 dramatisations of the Ian Rankin Rebus detective novels.
But the 65-year-old actor has played roles in tens of major films - including The Jungle Book, Titanic, and Max Manus.
[ ... ]
Meanwhile, Game of Thrones fans will know Donachie best as Ser Rodrik Cassel.
Sadly, the stoic Master-at-Arms at Winterfell came to a somewhat sticky end in Season 2 of the show, after Theon Greyjoy turned on the Starks and Ser Rodrik had to pay 'the iron price', with his head.
I don’t think Pod (Daniel) made it up to The North until Season 5, so there was little chance he ever would have run into Ser Rodrik (Ron). So to say that the two “starred alongside” each other is a bit of a stretch. But it’s a fun fact nonetheless.
