Dog Soldiers - 2002
Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Emma Cleasby, Liam Cunningham, Thomas Lockyer, Darren Morfitt
Review: Dog Soldiers is a great werewolf movie. Some parts were legitimately scary, and its full of tension and gore.
A group of soldiers who are in the middle of a training exercise stumble into werewolf territory, and end up fighting for their lives.
The movie does a great job of setting the scene and establishing characters right from the start. Right at the beginning you like the main character, as he's refuses to do something that violated his morals despite knowing that it would take away his chances of being special ops.
You get clear development to characters through out the movie, and you get to know each one of their distinct personalities. I always like having small moments of sadness as characters are dying in a movie other than not caring if they die either way. The fight these guys give the werewolves is quite the watch. They never give up, to the point where when they don't even have weapons they try to fist fight them.
The werewolf design was great. Super creepy, and seeing it move was actually like watching a werewolf move. The director actually hired professional dancers to be in the werewolf costumes to make their movement more fluid, and they nailed it.
The acting is good for the most part, awkward scenes here the there but nothing to bad. Honestly, some of the dialogue went over my head because it's an early 2000's British movie, and some of the slang I didn't understand.
One scene is going to live in my head for awhile. That's always what you want in a horror movie, when you can still think about it and it disturbs you just thinking about it.
6.9/10

On the Other Thomas Jefferson
Today’s post concerns not the esteemed President, but the son of the famous actor Joseph Jefferson, who went on to distinction in his own right, even if he did have a confusing name. This Thomas Jefferson (1856-1932) wasn’t even named after the President. His full name was Thomas Lockyer Jefferson, and he was named after his maternal grandfather, Thomas Lockyer (1805-1891), at whose hotel in the…

This is great. Werewolf, drama, comedy, etc. CinemaSerf: I will admit to being somewhat sceptical when I sat down to watch this, but within about twenty minutes the auditorium was chuckling to the witty banter of Sean Pertwee and his squad of soldiers who find themselves stuck on an exercise in a remote Scottish forest when they’d sooner be in the wardroom sinking a few beers while watching Germany beat England at football. When their fireside banter is ruined by a missile shaped like a dead cow; things start to liven up and what ensues is a race against time for their very survival – there are more dangerous creatures in the forest than red squirrels! Kevin McKidd keeps the troop focussed at they face their foes with grim determination and their black humour prevails pretty much throughout their ordeal. The special effects are a little bit “Dr. Who” but Neil Marshall ensures the lighting and sound folks do their level best to keep the suspense going for a long as possible and at no stage does it hang about: it’s end to end action with a tinge – a soupçon – of horror as the story builds to an enjoyable denouement! On the big screen again now in late 2020 – not sure why – but if you get chance, and you like your horror unsophisticated and funny, then this is definitely for you.

British and American Gunboats in Action on Lake Borgne, 14 December 1814, by Thomas Lyde Hornbrook (1780–1850)
During the preparation for the attack on New Orleans during the Anglo-American War of 1812 to 1814, one of the obstacles for the British to overcome was five American gunboats moored on Lake Borgne, a sea lake to the east. Since the waters were too shallow to permit men-of-war to get within range, the attack was made by boats of the fleet. This force consisted of 42 launches, each with a carronade mounted in the bow, and carrying 980 seamen and marines.
The five American gunboats were commanded by Lieutenant Thomas Catesby Jones and manned by 182 men. When Jones’s vessel drifted on the current a hundred yards nearer to his attackers, his was the first to be in action. He was boarded by sailors from the barge of Commander Nicholas Lockyer, the British officer in charge of the attack. The Americans resisted fiercely and had the advantage of height and anti-boarding netting. Lockyer was wounded, his number two killed and his barge suffered heavy loss. When a second took its place it was sunk but by sheer weight of numbers the British boats prevailed. They cut away the nettings and subsequently all the gunboats were taken. 41 Americans and 94 British were killed or wounded.
