Ein Powell und Pressburger-Musikfilm, den ich noch nicht kannte! Es gibt Gründe dafür, daß er nicht gar so bekannt ist. Oh, Rosalinda!!, eine modernisiserte Fassung der allseits beliebten Operette Die Fledermaus (der deutsche Titel lautet sinnigerweise Fledermaus ‘55) im geteilten Nachkriegs-Wien spielt zwar in schönster unrealistischer Hein-Heckroth-Ausstattung (die allerdings jetzt auch nicht so überzeugend als das aufgeteilte Wien rüberkommt wie beispielsweise das echte Wien in The Third Man), Anton Walbrook ist bewährt charmant, Mel Ferrer hübsch und forsch, Anneliese Rothenberger gibt sich die Ehre, all die schönen Kunstzutaten, und vieles ist wirklich sehr niedlich. Es ist aber insofern etwas unbefriedigend, als Komödie ihnen einfach nicht recht zu liegen scheint. Braucht aber möglicherweise auch eine zweite Sichtung, jetzt wo ich weiß, worauf ich mich eingelassen habe, und mit Champagner.

Thoughts on the New to Me films:

New Year's Eve we watched RRR, a lot of fun, energetic, bright and action-packed. I enjoyed the way that little attention was given to the British characters. They were straight up villains in ill fitting ahistorical costumes, kind of like the way Indian/Asian characters are treated in Western films most of the time...$$$

New Year's Day we watched Peter's Friends, a drama/comedy from the early 90s starring all of the famous Cambridge Footlights. Big Chill-ish film set in a country house over the Christmas holidays. $$$

How to Get a Head in Advertising was weird and also really good. Had a similar vibe to Withnail and I (possibly because of Richard E. Grant, but also possibly the mixture of the surreal with the realistic). Quite stage-y in some ways but clever and savage in it's satire of life in the 80s. $$$

Frieda: Oh I loved this! Weird World War II melodrama about a German girl marrying a British boy and all the trouble it causes with his complex family situation. Such a stellar cast including the late, great Glynnis Johns. $$$$

The Quick and the Dead: I set my expectations quite low for this and was pleasantly surprised. I liked Sam Raimi's comic book-y take on gunfighters and esp. loved Sharon Stone's character. We love to see a female action hero with no love interest. A nice twist on the Man with no Name trope. Excellent cast as well with Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider and Woody Stroud in his final film. $$$

The Barefoot Contessa: Joseph Mankewitcz is one of the geniuses of old Hollywood but this ain't it, chief. Just kind of all of the place melodrama that makes no sense and relies too much on Ava Gardner looking amazing in technicolor in the South of France. A bit of a commentary on Grace Kelly who a few years earlier married minor royalty on the Riviera. Even Rossano Brazzi can't save this mess for me. $

Rhubarb: Two genres I usually kind of hate (family-friendly animal centered film, sports film) combined into one and it's actually a lot of fun. Ray Milland and a bunch of classic character actors as the baseball team (also Leonard Nemoy has a tiny part as a mobster) in this slight/ predictable romp. $$

The Birds: Woah, shit this was good. I should have known. Amazing tension created and Hitchcock just sells the surreal horror with lots of rear projection...so. much. rear. projection. $$$

House of Yes: How about House of NOPE. Ugh what a mess this was. Some good performances and intriguing story, but it was very stagey and I don't know why the 90s couldn't make a story about adult children and their parents without reducing everyone to cliches and stereotypes but this and Six Degrees of Separation are definitely guilty of that, but the latter is just a better film. $

Cassandra Cat: Takes a long time to get to the cat which given that this was a family film from the 60s might be a problem for some viewers, expecting a more cat-centric movie. Interesting riff on fairy tales from the Czech New Wave. Beautiful Demy-esque technicolor and settings make this 60s nonsense fly by. $$

The Day the Earth Caught Fire: 60s nuclear panic disaster film that really just shows the earth as it is now in the throws of global warming. Yikes. Thoughtfully written and well acted by a bunch of folks I'd never heard of. $$

For Me and My Gal: Directed by Busby Berkley and starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland and set in the 1920s on the Vaudeville circuit, I was expecting a lot more fun, dancing, color, costumes etc. This is actually more of a black and white war time melodrama with some music shoved into it and the dancing is very rudimentary. (I think this is probably because Garland esp. at this stage wasn't in the same league with Gene Kelly and I think it would have been too noticable...). Filmed at the entry of America into WW2 this was quite a deliberate propaganda piece. $$

TLADOCB Commentary: I've watched this movie 20 times at least but the commentary really made me think about a bunch of things differently. Can't say I recommend unless you are fanatic though as it's obviously pieced together from interviews Michael Powell and Martin Scorcese $$

Water (1985): If you smoke the exact right strain of sativa and ignore some of the more dated aspects of this 80s comedy, that reads as if Local Hero were a Cheech and Chong film--this is a total classic. Irreverent Michael Caine just straight up breaking character the minute he turns into a guerilla fighter in the jungle and being far too competent and cool, and then snapping back to sweetly shy, inept British Civil Servant, finding he actually loves his hated backwater post (the invent Casara part Caribbean, part Devon Jurassic Coast) while having to actually do his job. Political satire and fully both barrels to Maggie Thatcher and Reagan. Good on em. Filmed in St. Lucia, the movie has a zany heart and little taste, hoovering up vast quantities of competent TV players from my youth: Herman Munster and Reginald Perrin to name but two. Awkward love story and some uneven acting from Valerie Perrin and Brenda Vaccaro. I enjoyed myself, heartily, anyway. $$$

The Ballad of John and Yoko: Technically a video essay with amazing production values (the licensing alone was epic) dragging together disparate topics around the central theme of women being blamed for bad things happening to infantalized male geniuses. Is it the most coherent argument? No. Does it absolutely tap into many unexpressed or implied ideas that have been floating around since me too? Absolutely. $$

Track 29: This was some of the worst casting I've ever seen in a film. When I think of Texas nurse who is into trains and spanking, I don't automatically think of comedian Sandra Bernhardt. When I think of an actress of that era who was old enough to play Gary Oldman's mother, I don't think of Theresa Russell who is the same age as Oldman and looked every bit as young as he did in the film. Maybe that was the point? I'm not sure. The story was weird, like a Southern Gothic melodrama/black comedy ala Flannery O'Connor, but there was something off about the whole thing.

Strawberry margarita mix to mostly fill the glass; separately, mix blue curaçao with silver tequila to “lighten” it (literally to reduce the weight) so that you can use back of a spoon to layer the blue on top. The sweetness and amount of tequila you need to add to the curacao make this drink an excellent shot.

Reasons why Michael Guerin Has a Mustache this season, some speculations

Following the predictable trend, the entire 13 episode run of Season 4 will take place over approximately 9 days. Not too long for a mustache experiment. But why, you ask? Why would God and the CW do this to us? Here are our best theories:

During production there was a "Michael" mix up and they gave Trevino's mustache to Vlamis, but once they realized the mistake it was too late to go back and re-film everything and they didn't want to be like Justice League Superman

What is left is an attempt to CGI the stache away

Entire season takes place during the last week of Movember

A atriz Sara Vidal vive enfim o que tanto queria desde mais jovem quando ela era modelo desfilando pelas passarelas do Brasil até as telas de cinema atuando em filmes e seriados de tv e agora já aos 20 anos, ela está em sua primeira novela – a estreia foi em Quanto Mais Vida, Melhor!. Com rotina atribulada diante das câmeras, ela lembra a transição das passarelas para a dramaturgia. Sara conta que sempre gostou de ser modelo e aos 17 anos foi assistir uma palestra. No local, tinha uma outra sala onde ela conseguia ouvir gritos e, quando foi olhar, era um curso de teatro.

“Fui olhar, como uma boa curiosa que sou, e era um teatro. Desde então me interessei e na outra semana já tava lá participando das aulas”, diz ela, que continuou por três anos fazendo aulas de interpretação para TV e teatro.

Produtora e dona do curso que acolheu Sara, Aline Costa conta que ela foi uma das primeiras alunas inscritas, mas que chegou assustada, insegura e que, por medo, acabava faltando algumas aulas de tv. Entretanto, os professores sempre viam que ela estava fazendo certo, mesmo com ela se cobrando demais.

“Na época, criança ainda, ela era apaixonada por um menino do curso. Muita gente comentava que ela só tinha procurado a gente porque o menino também estava lá. Mas, se foi isso, que sorte! Se ela procurou o teatro por isso e se tornou essa atriz fantástica, supercoerente e profissional”, diz Aline Costa, que continua dizendo que:

“A Sara é justiceira, ela gosta e briga por justiça. Tivemos um problema com uma professora e ela procurou saber tudo que estava acontecendo para se posicionar. Ela não quis ficar de lado ou não se envolver, pelo contrário, ela quis saber o que tinha acontecido de verdade para tomar uma atitude. Super Justa e tinha uma cabeça muito boa… Nunca gostou de injustiça com ninguém”.

It struck me yesterday that

Angela "Johnny" Canon was low-key Elizabeth Windsor and now I can't unsee it...the Queen as the Angel who returns to comfort her fellow imperialists in the twilight of their years, when Prussian and British have far more in common than they ever did against one another.

The rules around fighting was a deliberate theme of the film and the uselessness of rules in the face of total war. This is still a highly relevant film, lads. I'm not even mad that Michael Powell who started to weep with Anton when Clive says he'd stand surety with everything he has...how their friendship which withstands the calamity of them both being in love with the same girl, proves the most real friendship that two men can experience. Is this Mickey speaking with straight as the default? It's hard to say, Mickey made several very gay films that grew increasingly, openly queer (Oh...Rosalinda! and The Elusive Pimpernel being two that come to mind) as he went on but he wasn't thinking about that. He was thinking of his feelings for his friends, especially Deborah Kerr, with whom he was still exchanging Christmas cards. You could hear the flicker of an old torch in his reactions to her which were often unintelligible utterances of delight. Powell's discussion of the deliberateness of Pressburger's 'Angela means angel' speech was that Mickey provided Johnny's sassy "I think it stinks. My friends call me 'Johnny.'" The idea that Johnny is an angel, the literal reincarnation of their wives, was not an idea too surreal for the likes of Powell or Pressburger. It was that Powell made it less overt in Blimp.

In truth, I was hoping for more validation: Clive and Theo is the most important relationship in the film; theirs is the true love story. They wind up together in Canon, etc...

He didn't say any of these things, but this commentary was very awkward and pieced together and Michael Powell was quite emotional watching the film, and he was speaking entirely off the cuff. There was a bittersweet quality to the accolades that came in the 70s and 80s over the Archer's films, as Powell's career's collapsed in 1960 after the backlash over Peeping Tom. (A film I desperately need to rewatch, having last seen it 25 years ago). So I think he was noticing his own work, which he hadn't looked at in decades, restored and being viewed as it was intended. A forgotten/lost masterpiece restored.
