#Rowan vs oak

There are two major one-v-ones going on in TA!Ash’s life and it’s LanceVsDrake and OakVsRowan.

He gets the latter news by Gary bc he lives with Rowan and the old man has a very bad habit about not keeping the doors close, not like he doesn’t jam it open whenever he and Oak are in some kind of communication bc Rowan bitches so loud about even a simple email, and Gary is the biggest sluttiest whore for gossip so he’s basically eating popcorn IN THE DAMN DOORWAY while the two are on call. He then gets a call from Oak not even five minutes later who complains about Rowan and and other shit. Not knowing that Gary has put him on speakerphone and is trying not to lose his shit by watching Rowan trying to not lose his shit.

It takes all of Rowan’s Marine Corps training not to launch physically over his desk and grab the phone away from his assistant-pseudo-son/grandson and give the older coot a true piece of his kind. The kind he keeps specifically out of the lab and office and the one that drags Ash and Gary behind him like ducklings despite all his faux annoyance.

Ash gets the first through strongly worded emails and letters from Lance about Drake and vise versa, truly just spark notes, while getting the full version from literature everyone else that those two work with them. Gripping about this and that and some letters are over exaggerated (Lorelei, Will, and Karen) and are fucking novel length that Ash gets to read in class and trying his best not to lose his shit. Doing so far his own amusement since Alola doesn’t seem to have those cringy porn books that grandmas and old women read where the mc is named fucking Passion or something equal as that.

In others are very appreciative easily readable yet detailed recounts (Bruno and Koga) that Ash reads while replying back to Lance and Drake so he can accurately both dish shit in Proper Adult Shit Talking Through Legal Wording And Other Shit and his own insults. Absolutely somehow pouring more gasoline on this petty unnecessary bonfire without being figured out by both Champions.

Then there’s fucking Agatha who’s just talking shit about EVERYONE and Ash truly means everyone. She, Opal from Galar, Watson and Blaine from Hoenn, Ramos and Wulfric rom Kalos, Crasher Wake from Sinnoh, Drayden in Unova. She has the whole fucking squad of grandparents and old gossip mongers.

Ash has totally used this both in favor and as blackmail for certain people (cough cough Drayden cough cough) and it’s gained him both a lot of shit from the younger league members but also that sweet delicious Next Heir legality bullshit. Yeah, that’s right, Ash had enough shit with Iris. She is the only human friend that has reached the same level of attitude with any legendary in his life. Even Gary isn’t even on this level somehow. He doesn’t know what really is his problem, maybe it’s just from the kid thing and it’s Ash’s Achilles heel that he has to fight every time he’s around her in any moment, or it’s something much deeper in himself about himself. Regardless, Ash dared Drayden to a super drunk game of poker. “To make it even” Ash says and he’s been hyping the man up only to attack his ego out of nowhere.

He did this entire thing that he will never regret, it’s now Iris’s Achilles Heel but she doesn’t know it. Only Ash and Drayden will know and Drayden doesn’t give a shit enough about that because whatever he had wasn’t going to Iris anyways. It was going straight to the funds of the Dragon Town they both grown up it. Dragons donated to other well trained handlers picked by generations of high end expensive privileges right. It’s the least Drayden owes to the people who raised him and his Pokémon that caught by his side, it’s what he believes is right. Again, Iris doesn’t know this. She’s completely blind and the only other motherfucker that knows is ASH.

fucking Opal and Agatha adore him and their one of THE oldest and longest league members in current history. They have caught wars and diplomatically weave between these occultists and rich fucks with such a wave of awe and wisdom but also cuttingly mean and grouchy as an art, their teaching Ash through these letters and Ash gets to use it towards GLADION and also other people like Hala, who kinda fucking scares him and makes Ash’s fights senses go off then most and it’s a struggle, and he’s THRIVING!

Sometimes he uses it against Kukui and he also squirms away in such a older sibling act it’s hilarious and makes Ash do it more. He sometimes Chases Kukui down the halls if their like super late, almost into the damn night when everyone has gone. Kukui’s the Professor, by law he has every right to enter a classroom that he is teaching since he works such odd hours for the actual region of Alola too. The INL got his ass as well, y’all.

He uses it against Faba in such a cold rage and it’s absolutely murmurous. The class is genuinely scared while Lillie is either in the front to the back of the group or in the way back where no only is really look at her with eyes gleaming of awe and admiration a little sister would hold for a bigger brother. She has her moment of disgust, they just come a lot later down the line. Ash does it whenever the man is in sight.

Colress is… weird. He knows Ash, remembers him and the fear he had when he snapped the moment Pikachu became obsessed. Knocking out his friends with aura before going absolutely batshit insane for the first time. If he thought his anger towards Arceus’s was anything it was nothing compared for his friends safety. Iris and Cilan came too to the room not painted in red but in the Pokémon center. Ash had claimed what had happened and left them in the care of the Nurse Joy before watching his friend be healed by whatever the chosen Pokémon was in Unova.

Colress had survived, somehow. He’s now in Alola and Ash genuinely doesn’t feel about that. He’s about to start the forgiveness journey for Archie and Maxie who genuinely seem like better adults. In truth to put it plainly they were adults who just really really cared about what they love to the point it ruined them both emotionally and physically in ways, Ash hated it. It was the one thing keeping him from being able for a wound to at least freshly scab over. It likely wont last a while but it’ll give Ash some fond memories to look back on at least.

Lusamine is a mix. Sometimes it cold anger like Colress but less awkwardly when Colress genuinely doesn’t remember why he’s scared of Ash, it’s just another weakness towards his anger management issues, and others times it’s hot raging I’m going to fucking kill you verbally and actually make it possible anger. Mostly when it’s Lillie though the most violent moment was when the three tried to take Nebby away. He’s genuinely polite at first, since this is still Lusamine, Lillie’s mother and they never met and Lillie hasn’t said anything against her, until Lillie defends Ash and someone calls him a little kid despite being fucking 23 and a world wide known trainer due to your own popularity standing in the world. Like he doesn’t constantly rub shoulders with the big guys both in regional leagues and the INL. He could ruin her life but he waits for Lillie’s command.

It doesn’t come and Ash defaults to the cold. He’s used to cold. Rose was cold, Kanto and Johto chairmen are cold-a special little case for just the orange isles and good chunk of Unova gym leaders. Ingo adores Ash, even though Emmets only met him like thrice, and basically leans into the time with the kid.

This totally doesn’t give Ash the GREATEST thing to share with Gary so much that it’s still blowing his mind because it worked. Rowan was a cold lifeless bastard and, much like Captain Holt and his husband Kevin Cozner, he needed just the same style but softer. It was like the one true untainted good thing that came out of Unova. Ash and Gary love their step-dad and always referring to him behind their backs while still calling Rowan either Gunney or Rowan. He doesn’t get the Professor privilege because they’ve seen him in his boxers in his silver Fox glory, absolutely REVOLTING to them, and also sobered on by all kinds of Pokémon. He’s also Muks second favorite person.

But back to Lillie and she’s trying so hard to stand up for herself and she is genuinely letting her anger get to her for once. Ash is so fucking proud and he viciously backs her up. Proving Lillie right and watching the anger and a little bit of precious’s control over her little princess precious daughter. She has Eevee know, shiny little bugger with big blue golden eyes. He calls her Faker, like Shadow to Sonic, and also Things 2 other twin. He lovers her just as he’s equally as protective over Lillie.

It’s hard to find to love people now, that’s why he’s so close to Gary despite everything and Rowan and Ingo who fucking stepped up and helped in ways they could.

It’s easier to be protective, he’s gotten it down to a science that it looks like love but in such a brotherly way. It’s he he vibes with everyone and it’s just the small right side of annoyance. Of course unlike your Paul or Trip, Paul’s been redeemed slightly but Trips still a swing on sight yell later asshole.

Hala is a special case as religion is deeply imbedded and cherished amongst native Alolans and Ash must walk on egg shells somehow near the man. He’s one of the very few people who set off his flight side, the only other two were Cyrus and Lysander. The only two for world domination and got so damn close. Team rocket doesn’t count anymore since they’ve dwindled so much due to Ash, he’s a world hero for that alone dammit. Alola is just so far off from the main land that despite deep connection to the other professor’s despite the work force society rules Kukui still doesn’t know because he wasn’t there to help with the disaster relief the majority did.

Just because he gets special Grandchild Abilities regardless of who openly seethes at him in public without hesitation, also because Ash wouldn’t be able to get his monthly amusement in league and INL paperwork.

Green's freckles go down his shoulders and cover his whole back, and a tiny bit of the upper section of his thighs.

He's pretty good at mending machines and general coding.

Is planning some Battle Gear focused on riding battles, like heat resistant, electric and water proof gloves and special parachutes. It's on a very early stage, however.

Has only had girlfriends in his life, all of them while he lived in Kalos. It seems that all of these relationship ended in bad terms. The last one of these ended up deteriorating Green's image which lead to him becoming more focused on his studies and less on his social life.

He will never admit it but he was an obvious crush on both his childhood friends.

1. What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)

R: context, baybe! Am i at a merc bar? Timbiqui Dark. I hate the stuff to be honest, but one has to keep up appearances.

Drinking on someone else's dime? Call me old fashioned, but i do enjoy an Old Fashioned. I like'em fixed with maraschino, and give the glass a spritz of absinthe before you pour. Fun fact: a surprising number of bartenders dont know that maraschino is a liqueur, and put a bouquet of fuckin cherries in your drink. Tha dinguses.

At home? I'll keep it simple, usually some combo of soda + spirits. Im particuarly fond of sasparilla and Yukon Jack.

A. I enjoy my drinks hot, not cold. Coffee with tequilla, hot coco with tequilla, tea with tequilla... you get the picture.

5. What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.) 

R: my pride wants me to say it was at my mamma's teat, but... nah, lets drop the kayfabe for a sec and be real here. I cry, a whole fuckin' lot more than i admit, and nowhere near as much as i should. We joke and pal around and measure our dicks at each other, but in the end? We kill people. We visit incredible violence on our fellow human beings, and that should take a toll. And if it ever stops taking a toll? Its time to retire.

That doesn't exactly answer the question, so... last time i cried was a few nights ago. @is-the-battlemech-cool-or-not was gettin' me up to speed on the hundred years of history i missed out on, and i managed to hold it all together till i got back to my bunk. And then i broke down sobbing. Part of that was just, pent up stress from the goddamn meatgrinder of the Clan invasion. I lost almost everything- the war, half our company, nearly everyone we knew outside of that shitty ass Invader that misjumped us here.

But hell, y'know what? Ive still got that other half of my company. I still have Agata and Joana, i still got most of Fursona's Fusiliers around. Hell, i'm even reignitin' something with Remus... look, all those good things, that ive still got? Cried for that, too. It aint all gotta be tears of sorrow, you can cry for the good things too.

A: August 20th, 3028. Got pepper sprayed at Melissa and Hanse's wedding.

8. Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)

R: whoo boy. Just cleared out ol' Ronnie's quarters on the Pony. Its not got much decoration yet, just the barebones cot and whatnot. Lots of stab marks in the walls and furniture from when i get bored...Kept his desk though- solid oak, from Samantha. And uhh... maybe a couple of pinups of Kamea Arano... and Candace Liao... and Hanse Davion... and-

A: Like Rowan, I've just moved quarters- her old room in fact, since I'm the XO now. I have my rock collection up on some shelves I put in- I like to get one rock from each celestial body I visit, unique if possible. Theres also stab marks all over the place that I'm filling in, thanks for that by the way Rowan.

10. What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.) 

R: Pistol, hormones, sunglasses. In that order.

A: I no longer have my katana from my time in the DCMS, but I do still have the wakizashi that paired with it. I still wear it, for luck.

Bonus: What’s the thing they’re into that they’re most embarrassed/conflicted about? (Hobbies, interests, kinks, etc. Gets into self-image vs how they want to be perceived vs what compels them anyway, plus backstory.)

R: Conflicted, specifically. The tough-as-nails merc persona is... its hard to keep up sometimes. I want to be vulnerable around those I love, but i have trouble turning the macho down. Its paid in dividends, over the years, in bonus c-bills made and fights avoided, but it's also taken its toll on me. And... i didnt let myself feel what i wanted to feel around someone who i now realized i loved- and still love- very much.

A: Sometimes, on my worst nights, I- I still think about my time in the DCMS. And its like I'm still there, never left, and couldnt leave if I wanted. And I dont feel scared or trapped by my superiors or my culture, or horrified by the things I'd done for the Combine. I dont feel anything but mild pride and nostalgia. I don't like those being the things I feel about that time.

I have a tendency to either develop or take up characters in pairs--in order to have them act as narrative foils to one another.

Some past examples of this were Cyril and Simon (for the people that have been around for a whiiiile), Ozai and Iroh, and to some extent Gaster and Asgore.

The newest one, however?

Giovanni and Oak.

This one is even doubly interesting because it holds whether Oak is in his standard verse or his evil verse; Giovanni stands at a very solid morally gray compared to Main Oak's morally white and Evil Oak's morally black.

A lot of their history was designed with this in mind; both being distant with their parents, being skilled at battling, leaving for their travels at a young age, and being heroes to the people.  Having a similar history helps highlight the differences in how they engage with the world and see things around them.

So you have Main Oak, who has always been good and chose to remain good in the face of adversary, Giovanni who used to be good but chose a path of evil instead after the war, and Evil Oak, who has always chosen to be evil.  

They have very interesting ideals and thoughts that in many cases overlap but more often divert drastically.

For example, Oak’s belief that the world is meant to be understood and lives for the pursuit of knowledge vs Giovanni’s belief that the world will never be understood and lives solely for his own enjoyment.  

Oak’s belief that no matter what happens, the person’s true self will shine through vs Giovanni’s belief that drastic events shape and change a person’s self.  

Oak’s tendency to be picked on by Pokémon despite being a professor (usually) working in their best interest vs Giovanni’s tendency to be very good with Pokémon despite only looking to exploit them.  

Oak being rather clumsy with emotions and people vs Giovanni’s phenomenal ability to understand and connect with people.  

Oak’s calm logic vs Giovanni’s passionate emotion.  

Oak’s insistence that the elite and champion needed to hold back until a critical moment vs Giovanni’s decision to immediately fight on the front lines.  

Virtually any topic that you throw at them will have some interesting contrast between them.

It’s a shame that I can’t have any thread with them both without Giovanni immediately resorting to violence, though.  

And if you want to go another level; Giovanni’s relationship with Rowan is endlessly fascinating to me because they mirror each other on a smaller scale; Main Oak’s white vs Rowan’s light gray vs Giovanni’s dark gray vs Evil Oak’s black.  

Basically ever since I’ve learned of the concept of a literary foil in high school literature, I’ve been fascinated by it and virtually always incorporate it in some way; sometimes as enemies, sometimes as friends, sometimes as lovers.

(oo-uth) Meaning: Terror Keyword: Despair

Fear and despair are both things that stop movement, for me. Terror tries to activate movement through the fight or flight response, but there is also freeze. I think of when I went through my crisis in 2014-15 after a lifetime of depression. Was my body trying subconsciously to inspire action through fear? In some ways, it worked, because I finally got help. However, the fear was also so intense that I had trouble doing basic things like sleeping.

Fear is a method of protection. However, risk is inherent in many aspects of life. We must take risks. We even get dopamine from facing our fears successfully, which is why some people thrill-seek. Fear, thrill, excitement, desire... they are all so closely connected.

How do I work with fear as a partner? How do I acknowledge fear and then decide for myself if I want to move forward? How do I allow myself to fear, to scream all the way down the roller-coaster?

(dar) Meaning: Oak Keyword: Strength

Strength of the oak. Strength of the druid. Strength of the lion. Strength of the maiden.

Strength of the oak to grow tall, to grow in light, where other tree have not yet gone, to grow old, with deep roots, to grow hard and sturdy wood used only by master crafters, for doors and houses to last generations.

Strength of the druid, in touch with the spirits of the land, who has forged knowledge and lived experience into wisdom.

Strength of the maiden, master of her own mind, sovereign of her own self, beholden to no one. She who embraces the wildness of the self, lets it be wild, lets herself be wild, but also calms the wildness, the anger, the frenzy.

Compassion is strength. Gentleness is strength. Living is strength. Scars do not diminish strength.

Perhaps Dair is the mark of the Dagda to me. Perhaps Dair is the roots of the oak in my gut, supporting the fire in my heart.

What does it mean to be a master? It's not perfection, which is impossible. Is it the ability to teach others? Maybe, but not necessarily. It's a level of skill, hard to measure. But it feel good. You may not know where the peak of a mountain is, but at some point you see the vista. See how far you have come.

It's something you build up to. There must be joy as well as challenge. Challenge without joy is suffering. Joy without challenge eventually loses its meaning, becomes boredom. Balanced, you feel joy in reaching higher each time, and struggles aren't crushing.

Mental illness. Even when we are able to change ourselves, it is a slow thing, not linear. Sometimes it seems like all of our work is undone. "Brain does what it wants," I've said.

But this is only sometimes! When we ride out the storms, eventually the sun comes out again. If not, get help in what ways you can.

There are some things you can change, and some things you can't. It's against our nature, us homo sapiens, so good at thinking, but we need to let go of the things we can't change and focus on the things we can.

1. professor oak

according to bulbapedia, oak concentrates on the relationships between humans and pokemon- seems like an animal behavior scientist and professor! definitely also a famous scicommer since he hosts a radio show across kanto and johto! probably the bill nye of the pokemon world at this point. what if he was this Friendly Science Man all the 90s-2000s kids knew and like 20 years later he goes on a late night show and delivers this swear-filled rant on the global biodiversity crisis and how people need to keep their meowths and liepards inside

2. professor elm

elm gives me HEAVY recent postdoc vibes. i love how his hgss artwork portrays him to be a klutz. he’s so busy and frazzled he forgets to eat. see my post about how like half the men in biology i know look like this man. it’s also fun seeing professors who have families of their own, i like hearing tidbits here and there about their spouses and children. the *lore.* i don’t think he’d be to the level of maes hughes but when he like squeezes in a tiny thing about his wife or kid during lecture or to other members of his lab people can’t help but be like aww. he just seems wholesome! since he’s credited with the discovery of pokemon eggs, he probably would study reproductive/evolutionary developmental biology (one of my fav subjects!).

3. professor birch

(disclaimer: i have not played rse/oras) the only thing i know about this guy off the top of my head is how you get to pick your starter only because he’s getting chased around by a poochyena in the field. i love this fieldwork mishap energy. look at him, he’s wearing sandals and shorts into TALL GRASS. himbo scientist vibes, even tho those things kind of conflict. according to bulbapedia, he specializes in... HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION?? oh my god also one of my loves. one of the phd students i work with who also kinda studies distribution once fell into a >6 ft soil pit doing field work. if birch is getting chased around by wild animals as a professor, i can only imagine the shit he got himself into as a grad student.

4. professor rowan

one of the oldest professors at the school, to the degree where everyone considers him an enigma and takes his classes at least partly out of curiosity as to what he’s like. most people say the same thing, which is that he seems really scary at first but basically he’s just grandpa! has office hours that somehow work for everyone and has a huge bowl of candy at his desk. if you go, he’ll encourage you to take some and he’ll probably also take and eat one during your meeting. as per bulbapedia, literal evolutionary biologist. i feel like all the pokemon professors are somewhat of of evolutionary biologists by their trades, which may make rowan the Big one out of all of them. maybe neil shubin-level famous...

5. professor juniper

ONE OF MY FAVS!! i love her energy so much. she also gives me recent postdoc vibes but i could also see her as the weird (in a good way!) and spunky pi (principal investigator, basically the research manager) of her own lab. definitely active on scitwitter where she keeps up with the latest papers and advocates on academic issues. specializing in the origins of pokemon sounds a lot like an evolutionary biologist to me, though again i feel like all the professors are to an extent because “evolving” is pokemon’s thing. probably also works a lot with extremely old fossils, maybe from around the cambrian. if so, that definitely makes her an invertebrates person, my favorite kind of person (the lab i work with is full of them and they’re all wonderful). ohh maybe she even does research on the jump from unicellularity to multicellularity! definitely a close colleague of rowan, maybe even a former student!

6. professor sycamore

god if this man ever did a guest lecture or visiting professorship at a foreign university (like in “america” vs. “france”) everyone would go fucking nuts. his classes would fill up instantly. he teaches like. an introductory course on cell bio and there’s a not-insignificant portion of students there who are upperclassmen. i don’t really remember much from xy but that letter he leaves as a young man to his future self is very nice, i think he’d be a very supportive advisor/mentor and would be great at encouraging underclassmen to take their time and pursue their dreams. studying mega evolution, an instantaneous temporary change, reminds me of phenotypic plasticity, which is when individual organisms can change physical form in response to environmental stimuli. a really cool topic!

7. professor kukui

another professor where everyone signs up to take his classes. i feel like his chill yet enthusiastic attitude make him a good candidate to teach gen bio for freshmen, he’d be a great communicator and also probably puts actual good memes in his lectures. i feel like on the about page of his class/professional website he’d have this professionally-done photo of the masked royal, not even one some other fan took at a match, and it would be captioned “i’m a big fan of the masked royal! check out this sick picture i got of him” and he’d just do such a terrible job of hiding the fact that it’s him. i think due to the rigors of academia, it would be a retired thing he used to do, but the new students all lose their minds when they find out about it. WHAT IF HE TOLD EVERYONE A SURPRISE GUEST LECTURER WAS COMING IN AND IT WAS JUST HIM AS THE MASKED ROYAL AND HE MADE A BIG DEAL OUT OF HOW “HE AND KUKUI ARE FRIENDS” BUT EVERYONE KNEW BUT STILL WENT WILD ANYWAY. an irl analog to studying pokemon attacks... maybe the specific defense/attack mechanisms of a specific group or species. he likes rockruff and lycanroc right? maybe he’s also a behavioral biologist who studies how wolves hunt in packs and how their sociality evolved.

8. professor magnolia

(disclaimer: i have not played swsh) since she studies dynamax, she might also study phenotypic plasticity. apparently her work on it was so influential it started the trend of using it in big flashy galarian stadium battles, so she probably travels to do guest lectures a lot and it’s a BIG DEAL wherever she goes! uhhh idk what “galar particles” are? sounds like molecular or cell biology. oh maybe she studies differences in metabolism between form changes and what physiologically changes to keep up those different structures.
