Dinner came with plenty of dishes piled on the plate. The sole vegetable dish is royale or garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) but more commonly called 青龙菜 which literally translated as “Green Dragon Vegetable”. Moving clockwise, there is a portion of fried batang (Spanish mackerel), below it is mum’s special braised pork belly with shiitake mushroom and an egg. And lastly, there is a fried fishcake and three boiled fish balls to go with the steamed rice.

**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.

Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.

Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.

Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.

There are two versions of the texture the "fixed" version is used in JoH dlc and thus explains the difference in appearance. This is not the name of a known mushroom.

Additional Notes and Trivia

Ironwood - Unclear if this is an alternative name, the actual name of the plant, or both.

Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.

Sponge Root - Though canonical as it is mentioned and shown in World of Thedas vol. 2 on pg. 138 with a collection of deep mushroom and surface mushroom illustrations. This mushroom was cut twice from Inquisition. It was cut from the base game as a craftable, it had a much different appearance from its final design, and then it was cut again from Trespasser. It does however still make an appearance in Inquisition as the inventory icon for Crystal Grace.

Unnamed Glowing Mushroom Is mentioned in multiplayer when there are two Lukas playing.

Unnamed Mushroom These brown mushrooms are seen in the Fallow Mire and the Frostback Basin. They are shown in two different sizes ranging from shorter than a dwarf to taller than one.

There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".

Winterberry is a real plant. However, from what we see in DA2, it does not the same as the plant we have in the real world, just a shared common name.

Wormroot is another real plant name. However, due to the description in The Calling, it does not seem to be the same plant. In The Calling it is used to treat the venom of a giant spider. The real world plant is used to treat parasites in the gut and does not seem to hold any shared uses in folk lore, folk medicine, or western medicine practices.

Skeleton Boys Job Revamp + New: Part One

Jobs:

Classic is a professor at a college Toriel runs. Vanilla is the Mascot of Monsters and also works as a personal trainer. W.D. is a scientist working for Asgore.

Cardinal works and somewhat owns an animal shelter. Captain is a Lawyer and a volunteer Firefighter. Salamander is a scientist who works with W.D.

King is a Lifeguard and part-time park ranger. Shrike is a gardener and an animal rescuer. Silver is an event planner who sometimes helps with studies on science.

Navy is in the Royal Guard. Syrup is a bee-keeper. Coral is a boat captain and a scientist (though, part-time.)

Obsidian is a bee-keeper, firefighter, and part-time park ranger. Arian is a fitness instructor and a volunteer firefighter. He's a professor in a college.

Clove and Cinnamon have an animal shelter. Cinnamon is a doctor and a therapist. Cinnamon is also a part-time chef. Clary helps his sons around the house but he's retired, but also remains a science consultant.

Chai and Ceylon help with the animal shelter but are also looking to run a farm/ranch. Ceylon is a firefighter. Caper is retired, like Clary, but helps with science and part-time boat driving.

Chive works at an animal shelter while Cassia is a restaurant owner. Coriander is also retired but helps with science.

Caraway is a Private Investigator and Cayenne is a professional boxer.

Caster (Sugar) is a baker and Champignon is a server.

Tarragon makes dresses. Thyme is a model.

Conroy is a professor and science assistant. Rain is in the Royal Guard at the captain. Crane is a scientist and inventor.

Passerine is an animal shelter worker. Heath is a Royal Guardsman. Cran is a scientist and inventor as well as a ferryman.

Latin is a dance teacher and Hip Hop works with him at Latin's studio.

Tango is a popular dancer and singer while working with Latin as a dance teacher. Rhythm is a dance teacher.

Merengue is a dance teacher and DJ is a backup dancer and part-time dance teacher.

Caramel works part-time as a dance teacher while also owning a bakery. Glamour is a bartender. Onyx is a scientist.

Merlot is a bouncer for a bar. Affogato is a chef. Morganite is a scientist and a doctor.

Cappuccino is a fashion designer. Marocchino is a painter. Tourmaline is a doctor.

Hound is a consultant for both the Royal Guard and the mafia, he's also a private investigator. Ebony is a consultant private investigator and part-time food critic. Sirius is an archeologist and scientist.

Conleth is a self-defense teacher and Marion is an idol.

Dolce is a judge and a private investigator. Airen is a captain of a Royal Guard. Ares is a scientist.

If you agree till the end, he'll leave the room for a split second to go to the restroom, only to come back rolling in a cart of roses and proposing to you with a sparkly ass ring. (I wanted to make this version as a tribute to his Canon insecurities about his appearance in the manga. :> Chapter 198, my favorite)

If you thought you were stuffed, too fucking bad because the cinnamonroll made you desert and you'd better fucking like it for the sake of the baby boy's feelings. (̶I̶'̶m̶ ̶b̶̶i̶̶a̶̶s̶̶e̶̶d̶) He brings out this gigantic ass cake (which will be used the next night when he unveils to his buddies of the engagement ofc) and helps you cut it. As he assists you with cutting the cake, he doesn't go all the way in (🤨😏) as to make sure he doesn't cut into the hollow spot of the cake where he'd hidden the ring box.

The bar cheers as he pounds this bitch, and when he's done he lifts his hands in triumph while they cheer- only Wakasa's grin isn't one of boastful speed, it's a sly one that shines because you'd been in the dark about how he'd taped and snuck a ring under that exact mug to the bartender in a sneaky plan. Get ready to be publicly embarrassed you winner- 💀💀

Garden time

Little fluff drabbel, 765 words, l'Oncle Lyutsifer and Mathilde in the garden

“Careful now. ..”, Safin whispered as he took a sprout in his hand. Kneeling on the ground he and his young guest had digged some small holes into the garden bed.

He handed the sprout softy into Mathilde's hand.

“There. Now settle it in.”

Mathilde froze for a second and blew a strand of hair from her face away. Safin helped her to get her eyes free by wiping the strand behind her right ear.

“That's better, right?”

“Mhm.”, she nodded and eventually placed the sprout into the hole. With her little hands she shoveled earth aside it and pressed it.

“Not too harsh. Here -”

Safin reached for the small watering can and gave it to Mathilde.

He did not have to explain what to do, Mathilde had seen him often tending to his plants.

Safin watched satisfied how Mathilde cared for the seedlings.

“Very good. We come now daily and check on them. We have to watch out for snails, though, but you will see your plants grow. And in no time we can eat fresh radish.”

“I like radish!”

Safin chuckled and wiped his hands, before he also wiped Mathilde's with a cloth.

“I know. You like it a bit spicy.”

In fact, Safin found out about Mathildes 'spice tooth' as he found her sneaking into his kitchen garden by harvesting and eating the chives.

“Oncle Lyutsifer? How long will they need to grow?”

“We need some patient. But in six week they will be ready to harvest.”

Mathilde made a long face. “Six week!? This long?”

Safin smiled by her expression. “Don't fret, precious. We have so much to do in the garden.”

He got up and took Mathildes hand to lead her to the next garden bed.

“The carrots are soon due, and many of the herbs needs to be collected.”

Mathilde looked around in the potager and nodded.

“Yes, that's true.” She looked up to Safin with an serious face, unaware that she was mirroring him.

“I know most of the herbs now. I have studied them.”, she proclaimed.

Safin tried to held his face still serious as he answered: “Please, enlighten me!”

Mathilde wiggled away from him but made sure she didn't step too close to the poisoned plants aside growing.

“There is Thyme, and this is basil.”, she pointed the plants out. “This is parsley - I like that a lot in my scrambled eggs - and this is marjoram.”

She made a face by the last plant.

“But don't like Marjoram, right?”

“The taste is too strong.”

“Says the girl who would eat radish fresh from the earth.”

“But that's different.”

"Clearly.”, Safin laughed.

“Oncle Lyutsifer?”

“Yes?”, Safin asked back, curious what idea she has in mind now. This girl was full of ideas and brainstorm.

“Why are they so much flowers around the potager?”

Safin pointed to the bee hives.

“You realize the potager is a circle?”, he asked her while making a fitting gesture. “It is like a small circle of life. Kitchen spices and tea herbs, surrounded by flowers for the bees. So all will bloom and grow.”

“The bees are pollinating the flowers.”

“Oh, that's very good, Mathilde.”, Safin cheered up. "You remember the lesson?”

Mathilde nodded firmly, her eyes on the bee hives. “And they make the honey I love so much.”

“Yes.”, Safin said. “There is nothing better then a comb, soaking in honey, to spread it on fresh baked bread. Wouldn't you agree?”

Mathilde sighed delighted and grinned up to Safin.

“Oh! Can we have that for tea?”

“Of course.”, Safin smiled and squeezed softly Mathilde's hand.

“Everything you wish, my precious.”

Solemnly, both walked along the herbs, while Mathilde playfully threw their name out.

“Rosemary. Sage. Lemon balm. Chamomile. Penny royal..”

Safin watched her, all proud l'oncle, relishing in the living, joyful view of this clever child. It was a shame her mother preferred to be drugged and to sleep her days away, instead of joining him willingly.

He had not yet lost hope, though.

Flora, fauna, geography and environment of Arda

This entry is part of a series on the biodiversity and environment of Doriath.

I wanted to rewrite this to take into consideration the probable alkaline quality of the earth around Menengroth as well as the ecology of Holly forests

Region was the larger forest of Doriath, South of the river Esgalduin and North of Aros. The capital was Menengroth which was located in the northern parts of the forest, accessed by a bridge over Esgalduin and made up of a series of caverns and caves.

It is a warm temperate forest with moderate to heavy rainfall depending on the season and short winters. The biome is likely temperate broadleaf and mixed forests with the ecoregion being inspired by Atlantic,  Balkan or Cantabrian mixed forests.

Unlike Neldoreth, few species are directly named aside from holly (actually a large family rather than a single species) and nightingale.

In the Lay of Leithian, we have these lines

Lo! there amid immortal flowers the nightingales in shining bowers sang o'er the head of Melian, while water for ever dripped and ran from fountains in the rocky floor. There Thingol sat. His crown he wore of green and silver, and round his chair a host in gleaming armour fair…

The caves themselves are possibly limestone with dolomite and hewn marble (marble basins are described) and so the soil around the entrances is alkaline

Holly does not tolerate high levels of alkaline in the soil so although it is one of the more prominent trees of Region it likely does not grow near Menengroth. Holly also grows typically in clusters in oak and beech forests which is fitting as Doriath has both and Thingol was known as the king of beech, oak and elm

Near the entrances, wild chives, columbine, ox eye daisy along with clusters of evergreen ash trees and blackthorn. Bird’s nest and early purple orchids can also be found closer to the caves as well

Note: I will make a separate post on the royal gardens of Menengroth if there is interest

The forest was described as being made up of holly trees, likely European and mountain holly along with a variety of holly or ilex family shrubs (for example, Box leafed holly is pruned and cultivated in and around Menengroth itself, aided by the magic of Melian.) Other trees likely grew alongside them including cedar trees, wild cherry, white oaks, pointed leaf maple, and sweet or emperor oak.

Black elder, shoreline figwort, water horsetail, heath violet and meadow soft grass grow on the borders of the forest and by the rivers along with groves of gray willow.

Also of note are wolf lichen, bearded lichen, panther cap mushroom, false death cap and death cap, devil’s bolete, wood blewit, fairy inkcap, yellowleg bonnet, bracken club fungus,  eagle ferns, glade ferns, and fiddlehead fern which grow on the forest floor, upon trees themselves and on fallen trees . (mushrooms and lichens are not plants unlike ferns which are, I’ve grouped them together because of where they are in the forest)

Like in Neldoreth, a variety of species associated with ancient woodland grow especially in the spring including bluebells, crocuses, snowdrops, and dog’s bane 

As always, insects are nearly impossible to do even an overview of because of the huge variety of species but here is a brief list and if anyone wants me to ever do more in depth posts on them, I’m happy to! June beetles, dead leaf mantises, blue crickets, stick insects, leaf beetles, speckled wood butterfly, small copper butterfly, holly blue butterfly, gatekeeper butterfly, and large blues in clearings and by the river.

Little bitterns, black bitterns, wood ducks, species of swallow and house martin, gray heron, Weavers, yellow, white and citrine wagtails, nuthatches, nightingale, robin, thrush, green finch, wood warbler, red kites, kestrels, and more. Like with insects it’s hard to get a good list so this is only a selection but I’d be happy to do a longer list if anyone wants! I do personally headcanon that there are prehistoric creatures (by our world’s timeline) in the deeper woods of Doriath though I think many are North and West of Region in Neldoreth and Nivrim. In the gardens cultivated by Melian near Menengroth however you can find creatures like the hummingbird ancestor Eurotrochilus.

Wood frogs can be found in the undergrowth especially near logs and fallen trees. Golden newts are less common outside their breeding season where they are in abundance in small verbal pools.

The mammals of Region have a lot of overlap with those of Neldoreth. Musk deer, barking deer, masked shrew, sable, pale wild cats, black, silver and light red foxes, wood mice, river otters, elk, and stranger creatures too.

I kept to real creatures here but I’d be happy to talk about my ideas for others.

SAVORIES

Spiced boiled beef - (17 people annihilated a three pound bottom round of Experiment Meat - I also liked the beef but frankly im kind of astounded at the public reception and wondering if people are pulling my leg. condiments were salted cucumber, mustards, my homemade chili jam, etc.)

Baked sandwich loaf - (did a twisted loaf formation which, in my hubris, did not really gel and each slice of bread subdivided into three separate units when sliced - not the end of the world. I am NOT getting the hang of instant yeast. a good friend's mom sent me a thank-you email that asked if the bread had been Irish soda bread and I was like fuck that would have been WAY more convenient, dammit, thanks a lot Kit)

herbed buttermilk biscuits - (chives & tarragon)

COOKIES

Priyaniki - (a good 1/3 of the honey used was chestnut honey and oh boy does that flavor prevail. can't taste a lick of the anise)

Melomakarona - (generally, the socially easy fav. don't think I did the syrup right this year, the walnut topping didn't want to stick like it used to)

sables bretons - (used cute little cutters for these! scalloped circles and diamonds. probably the best they've turned out in the years of making, still working on the texture/thickness)

CAKE/ISH

the black cake, w/royal icing - (icing this thing makes it WAY more approachable to the Partygoer -easily the most black cake consumed by a party body in the five years of me throwing this damn thing. and in my opinion, the best black cake batch I've ever made - in a fit of pique I removed the egg casing/chalazae from a dozen yolks and made my own browning. I was so sad when I made this cake this year)

country Christmas cake, smothered with quince jam, marzipan, and royal icing - (I was so unhappy with the first try I had to make it again. I almost left it but I was like, NO. I invited my friend above over to watch me bake it while they knitted and then they helped me move a ton of furniture, due to my agonies)

eggnog - today, I saw a "sadist dom top" on the Internet say how disgusting eggnog is (curdled mayo - heard it!) personally, I don't think this man is very tough. personally, this man can suck chalazae. online, bitching, like the bitch he is!

three-layer lemon honeycomb mold - half-collapsed?? bad gelatin luck two years in a row! despair!

black velvet & cream jelly - would not leave it's kennel for ages, but held together in one piece, thank god.

last year's party, I enacted a "I am preparing only desserts" rule, which ended up in my accidentally starving myself for a day and a night. this year, someone came up to me and said "thank you so much for not doing desserts-only this year" so now, I guess, I can put doing that again right out of my mind.

do you listen to music when you write/edit "An Arranged Marriage" ? what kind of music gets you in the mood to write/edit the fic?

I do have music that I listen to get inspired, but I don't oftentimes write while listening to music. I listen to all sorts of music over the course of my day, so I tend to have it quiet when it's time to sit down and write.

Well, I guess that's a lie, because I've got two lists: inspiration music and writing music. Both I occasionally dip into if I feel that it is necessary for the scene (parties, dances, etc) or if I just feel the vibe is necessary.

Inspiration music is whatever song I've latched onto for the day that just gets my interests going. I can't possibly list all of the songs that have inspired me, we'd be here all day if I did, but I can offer some of my most recent songs I've listened to. They may not even be possibly related to the story, just the vibe that's being given off by the song has caught my attention.

Here’s a small thing I wrote when trying to get energy for writing.

Characters: Doc and Arvin

Summary: Arvin makes Doc breakfast

The soft crunch of vegetables being trapped between a blade and a cutting board was the only sound to be heard as Doc entered the royal kitchens. There was Arvin, chopped onions, peppers, and mushrooms off to the side as he was now working on the chives. The curved knife with two handles on each end, the mezzaluna as humans called it, was in the former king’s hands as he gently rocked it back and forth, cutting the basil into smaller pieces.

Doc leaned against the doorframe, watching Arvin’s tongue stick out as he focused on his task. It wasn’t a sight most got to see, a royal in the kitchen during early morning hours, cooking himself. It was a sight worth drinking in more than what he’d come here to drink. He couldn’t exactly sneak coffee with the king right there after all.

Once he was done with the chives, Arvin pushed them together with the other chopped items and then looked around, frowning. “Where did I put those eggs?” he mused.

Doc moved from his position at the door, picking up a container of four eggs that was resting on a table behind Arvin, and brought it to him. “They’re right here.”

Arvin jumped, a blush and sheepish grin slowly appearing on his face. “Oh, Doc! I thought you’d still be in bed. Shouldn’t you be resting?” He took the eggs from Doc’s outstretched hand; his left hand. Doc’s right arm was still in a sling, close to his chest.

“Couldn’t heap, er sleep,” Doc admitted, moving onto his tiptoes so he could see the counter a bit better. “Making breakfast already?”

“Well um, I know your daughter said that good food would help you heal faster? And you’re used to waking up early at the cottage, so I was hoping to have this done before you woke. I thought a nice omelet would be good. And hard to mess up.” He laughed, still blushing.

Doc frowned. “Folding them can be hard. Mind if I stay and give some advice?”

Arvin shook his head. “No, I don’t mind. If you can’t sleep anyway, might as well have some company! But do bring over a stool and sit! You’re here so we can make sure you’re alright.” Joy had forced him to stay either with Snow or with herself and the prince. Snow’s castle was closer to the cottage, so that’s what he’d picked.

Doc grabbed a stool, struggling to climb up on it. Human stools were so far from the ground! His legs swung a bit as he watched Arvin crack the egg into the pan, slowly frying it. Besides some advice on how to fold in the vegetables, there was silence until the nice aroma filled the room.

Soon, two omelets were sitting on plates. They weren’t perfect, but this wasn’t a restaurant, and Doc thought food that didn’t look perfect tasted better. You could see the work and love that went into it this way.

Arvin was soon pulling up a stool of his own, and pouring some tea that Doc hadn’t even noticed sitting nearby for the both of them. “I know you probably miss your brothers. Hopefully I can be adequate company until you can return to them.”

Doc swirled the tea in his cup before taking a sip. It wasn’t coffee, but the hot drink was still welcome, and soothing. “It’s nice to have a break sometimes. Dopey can be a sandful, handful! It’s never this quiet.” When they weren’t talking, the only sound that could be heard was the ticking of the clock on the wall and the scraping of forks against plates when they took a bite.

Too much quiet could make him anxious. It was one of the reasons he couldn’t sleep. But now, here with Arvin, it was soothing. He wasn’t sure what had changed.

“Well, I’m glad you can get the rest you need.” The king’s smile was kind as he ate his omelet. It was still hard to wrap his head around the idea that a human king enjoyed spending time with a common dwarf, and yet here they were.

Doc took another bite, savoring the flavors of the omelet, before a surprise yawn escaped his mouth. He tried to cover it, but Arvin’s eyes were already on him.

“You know, Joy’s not going to be thrilled if you don’t get enough sleep.”

Doc muttered, not even really sure what he was saying, preferring to pick up and drink his tea. He didn’t want to sleep, even if he knew Arvin was right. Dreams weren’t always pleasant.

The omelet was already gone, but he was surprised when Arvin stood up. “Come on. We’ll have to make you more comfortable.”

“But my broom is, er room –“

“No buts. Come on.” Doc resisted the urge to say a sarcastic comeback. He wasn’t Happy with his puns who’d talk about other types of butts, and he wasn’t Grumpy who dragged his feet all the time.

Well, he could still drag his feet a little, Doc decided. He walked slowly, not because it hurt to walk but because he didn’t really want to get to where they were going. But it wasn’t his room they arrived at.

The king’s chambers were huge, the bed the size of Doc’s own dining room. He gasped, looking up at Arvin in surprise.

“Come on in. My bed’s the comfiest in the castle. And this way I can stay with you. I know you said you liked the quiet, but you’re used to sleeping in a room with your brothers, right? I’ll stay with you, it’ll give you some white noise to sleep to.”

Doc sputtered, too stunned by this turn of events to put things into words. “But, sir, I … are you myrrh, er sure?”

Arvin smiled, nodding. Doc managed to clamber up into the bed without using his right arm. He was pretty sure Arvin was going to be as stubborn as his daughter when it came to his health. He snuggled into the covers, even if it felt rather wrong.

“I’ll be right here if you need anything.”

Doc nodded, closing his eyes. He had to at least pretend to sleep.

And then he heard it. The rustling of pages. Even with his eyes closed, it brought back a memory. A tired, older man, smiling at him and reading him a dwarven bedtime story as he lay tucked under the covers. One of the few things he always got to do with his father …

But more memories were surfacing. Memories of himself holding the book, trying to gently remind Joy that if she kept asking questions about all the plants and animals in the fairytale, she’d never get to sleep. Memories of Dopey staring at him with wide eyes and complete attention even if Grumpy was rolling his eyes on one side of the room, and Sleepy was already snoring on the other.

Snow had read to them too, hadn’t she? He could almost see her sitting there, trying to get through a story with all their questions and interruptions. It was starting to look very real.

Soon the sounds of pages turning were no longer fueling memories, but dreams, as the old dwarf slept, content for now. Nightmares couldn’t plague him when his dreams were filled with bedtime stories.
