Hilarious seeing Kensington Palace release a photo of Kate and the kids for mother's day to try and crush the "Where is Kate?" conspiracy theories, but it was so obviously photoshopped it just gave them new life and actually got the mainstream press to start asking questions.

I went to Puy du Fou (1) and watched  'Le Dernier Panache' (2), and needless to say, I've got a few things on my mind. But before I gather my thoughts into something coherent, there’s one pressing issue I need to address: there was NO “extermination” policy in the Vendée.
Is it clear enough for everyone? I sincerely hope so because yesterday, I was among an audience of about 5000 who were shown a scene depicting Robespierre (in yellow), Saint-Just (in turquoise), and Barère (in purple) arguing for the complete destruction of the Vendée… for reasons…
In plain terms, were they advocating for genocide (3)  in the Vendée.
This didn’t happen. In 1793, the idea of a distinct Vendéen identity wasn’t a real thing. The Vendéens were not recognized as a specific regional or ethnic group, not by themselves or anyone else.
Do you know what was real? Brigands rebelling against the first French Republic. What were the policies of extermination targeted towards? Those Brigands. What do you call that? Civil War.
On 1st August 1793, Barère delivered an inflamatory speech (4) that many use to argue the Committee of Public Safety's alleged genocidal intent. His words were indeed unhinged, typical of the era’s rhetoric.
Barère did say, "No more Vendée, no more royalty; no more Vendée, no more aristocracy; no more Vendée, and the enemies of the republic have disappeared," but this infamous line follows a crucial preamble: "We will have peace the day the interior is peaceful, that the rebels are subdued, that the brigands are exterminated. (5)" It’s disingenuous to interpret this as a call to wipe out an entire region (6).
Moreover, this speech was followed by the "Décret relatif aux mesures à prendre contre les rebelles de Vendée", which includes an article (the 8th) stating: "Women, children, and the elderly will be taken inland. Provisions will be made for their subsistence and safety, with all the consideration due to humanity" This directive was actually enforced as evidenced by the 20,000 to 40,000 refugees who the government supported in cities like Poitiers, Orléans, and La Rochelle.
The conservative right in France has been peddling this genocide narrative since the mid-1980s, but no amount of dramatic cursive text with melancholic violin strains will convert fiction into fact.
Tumblr media
What happened in the Vendée was horrific. Were there war crimes? Numerous. Was the region scarred by the violence? Undoubtedly. Should we acknowledge that? Of course!  But pushing a theory that is not true detracts from recognising the violence, learning from it and ensuring it will never happen again.
It also cheapens the heroic acts and sacrifices of those who fought not for the narrow political agendas of the 21st century but for causes they truly believed in. The counter-revolutionaries in the Vendée and throughout France were driven by a deep commitment to protect their communities, faith, and way of life. They were not merely victims of a systematic extermination effort but active participants in a struggle to defend their political and religious beliefs (7). Admittedly, I'm not an expert on Charette, but I suspect he would be disturbed to see his legacy so grossly misrepresented…
Notes
(1) Puy du Fou is a historical theme park in the Vendée known for its elaborate live shows that recreate historical events. It has faced criticism for potentially exploiting history and is managed by the Puy du Fou Foundation, linked to its founder, Philippe de Villiers, a French politician noted for his conservative and nationalist views.
(2) This particular show focuses on François Athanase Charette de La Contrie, a Vendean general.
(3) Genocide is defined by the United Nations in the "Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide", adopted on December 9, 1948, as acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group.
(4) The conflict in the Vendée began in March 1793, prior to Robespierre's association with the Committee of Public Safety. Danton was the one who was instrumental in shaping the initial response to the uprising and was the president of the Convention during Barère’s speech. Weirdly enough, Danton is nowhere on that stage…
(6) This type of rhetoric was not unique to the Vendée but was also directed at other counter-revolutionary hotspots across France like Brittany, Lyon, Marseille, Avignon, etc.
(7) I'm not a particular fan of those beliefs but I can respect the courage to stand up in defence of a lost cause.

Why the actual fuck are y'all so obsessed with comparing reality to the hunger games?
Why are you all acting like rich people and celebrities carrying on with their life while brutal massacres are ongoing is a new fucking concept?
Do you honestly think that every Oscars, every sports tournament, every met gala, every fucking pr celebration before October 2023 happened during 'World peace'?
Do you think there weren't people in the 90s or 80s or 70s or 60s or 40s that were unable to afford food or water or heating ?
Do you think there weren't genocidal acts and atrocities happening globally before 2023?
Do you think rich people in the 1910s were all doing everything in their power to stop the global conflicts and disgusting crimes?
Do you honestly think there weren't people in the 1800s who would go around flaunting their wealth while the lower classes died and starved?
Did you forget that the French revolution took place in the late 1700s? That while the peasants were starving to death the french elite were bathing in crushed strawberries and washed with perfumed milk?
Did you forget that during the 1600s King charles the 2nd revived the act of public dining? Allowing the lower classes to watch from behind a railing as he was served 26 dishes, with each one being presented to him by a different servant before being tasted by them and placed on his plate?
Did you forget that in the 1500s in England any poor person found capable of doing a day's work but refusing to do so could be sentenced to death?
Did you forget that in the 1400-1500s, while the richest of European society went on with their lavish lifestyles, there were multiple genocides as European countries colonised the American continents and expanded into the East?
WE ARE NOT EXPERIENCING ANYTHING NEW OR DYSTOPIAN
WE ARE JUST RELIVING THE PAST WITH MODERN ADVANCEMENTS, WE ARE JUST MORE AWARE OF THE INJUSTICES THE WESTERN SOCIETY IS BUILT ON

ok one more thing i know i go on
but they have to *make up* things about tommy and grace's relationship being this perfect fairytale romance with amazing communication etc at the same time as they're making up all this negative stuff about tommy and lizzie's relationship. both of these things are tells! if you can't be honest about how your OTP had issues in canon -- some of the same issues as your rival OTP! just on a smaller scale, because she died before they could get worse/complicated! -- then maybe that's a sign.
honestly the messiness of Tommy and Grace's relationship as it exists in canon is one of my favorite things, and it's so boring that it gets flattened and erased in order to hold up as some kind of perfection in comparison to Tommy and Lizzie's messiness (which I also love).
Tommy and Lizzie's relationship is messy enough without having to make up things about it that are obviously, factually not true.

Studying Carnot is never disappointing: even if I can't manage to find the specific info about him that I'm looking for, I always discover something new nonetheless, like this very bizarre (and cursed) drawing:
Tumblr media
Its title is very simple and self-explanatory: Allégorie avec Lazare Carnot; it was made by Philippe-Auguste Hennequin, student of Jacques-Louis David and fervent Republican. It's not a celebrative piece, but an allegory about Carnot's supposed royalist sympathies that forced him to flee with the 18 Fructidor coup; the drawing is indeed dated 1797.
Here's the description I found on the online collection of the Vizille Museum:
With the features of a divinity, to whom victims are immolated, the herm bust of Louis XVI represents the political tendencies of Carnot.

Diemen Xicali
He's a police officer who instead of being obsessed with hotdogs, he's obsessed with donuts. Classic cop stereotype He and Mallek are good friends, often teaming up to catch outlaws, though the bronzeblood isn't very buddy-buddy with the law either. In fact, he's got a record, but Diemen feels bad for having to arrest or even cull one of his only friends. He frowns upon his friend's rebel thoughts, but doesn't do anything about it. Diemen hates thinking about it. Also, no. He won't share his Precious Donuts.

Marsti Houtek
A mediculler of around 8.5 sweeps who already got a degree. Her main patient is a girl with a disease known as Muscle Leech, a terminal disease that primarily affects indigobloods. She knows how to treat the condition, and is always happy to see her patient in her room, no matter how crude she is, or for how long she'll keep her blank face. She's also studying to potentially become a surgeon someday.

Fozzer Velyes
At first, he may seem like almost every other tealblood. However, he is actually very against many Alternian laws, how he deems them as unfair and actually unjust. Unfortunately, he cannot express his ideas out loud or else he'd be culled, so he pretends to agree with everything and act like someone of his caste should. He is also quite of a militant, and actively defends the rights of limebloods. He is the one who knows the truth about Marvus' real blood color and promised to never tell anybody about it.

Public Service Announcement: Can someone please tell General Kleber that he will have infinitely fewer issues in the Vendee if he throws squirrels at La Rochejaquelein?
Yes... I'm knee-deep in Royalist/Catholic propaganda, reading the Memories of the Marquise de La Rochejaquelein (Mémoires de Mme la marquise de La Rochejaquelein écrits par elle-même). Every book I've seen about the war in the Vendée references it, so I reckoned I should probably read it myself. It's quite interesting but obviously biased. She gives a pretty detailed and sympathetic perspective of the Vendéean side.
This is a true story. Apparently, Henri de La Rochejaquelein (baby generalissimo extraordinaire who, antiquated views aside, seems like a pretty cool guy and is very good at his job for a 21-year-old) had an irrational fear of squirrels. Yes. Squirrels.
Tumblr media
Now I have this entire alternate reality headcanon of the CPS back in Paris training squirrels to send to the Army of the West....

had a long conversation with a friend about the sincerity of herault’s revolutionary politics and we reached an interesting conclusion: even if he was just larping it would still not only be incredibly funny that it lasted for so long but would also be possibly one of the most extreme instances of commitment to the bit in all of human history. so it’s ok either way
