Ruby Redfort Screen Adaptation Ideas
• Bradley Baker is HOT
• The rules are episode titles
• No romance between Ruby and Clancy
• The iconic pair that are Ruby’s parents
• Foreshadowing for LB’s backstory
• More and more elaborate ways into spectrum (like Perry the Platypus in Phineas and Ferb)
• Advert for Choco Puffs with the secret codes hidden in it in commercial breaks
• The cinematic drama that is Ruby being dug out by Mrs Digby
Please reblog with more ideas (if you don’t mind me using them for the screenplay I want to write for fun!)

just remembered the really solid conclusion I drew the last time I reread this series, which is pretty simple: Ruby is all explicitly autistic in these books. quite aside from the obvious child genius bullshit that's got going on: she's touch-averse (see: PYP, where she straight-up says that she rarely hugs people), has a tendency to gravitate towards Very Familiar And Very Specific foods and drinks (banana milk, strawberry bubblegum, the Good Donuts, has a tendency to get really short and upset when those familiar foods are not available), hyperfixates on problems to the point of not sleeping/eating until someone tells her to (basically every book), she's Fucking Bad at picking up on social cues (that one kid trying unsuccessfully to flirt with her for an entire book) and then... man, the list of rules. the rules that she works out and sticks to so hard that when Sam Colt is like 'hey, sometimes you've got to.. not use your pre-planned rules' she has absolutely no idea what to do with that. sometimes she just locks herself in her room because she doesn't want to People today. it's so real of her.
in conclusion i guess you could say she's on the Spectr - [gets shot]

Also just a note on the legendary character of Bradley Baker; I 100% believe with my full chest that Simon Baker would be an EXCELLENT casting choice for Baker
Yes I’m biased I’m a Mentalist girly BUT this guy is the shadow Ruby lives under, and he’s brought up QUITE A LOT and every time he’s mentioned (at least for when they’re talking about adult!Bradley) I can ONLY picture Patrick Jane’s gleeful face
He was said to be very charismatic and beloved by everyone and idk ever since the first time I read the Ruby books all I could see was Jane playing him
So yeah if Ruby ever makes it onto the big screen, especially for the last book (iykyk how relevant Baker is there) SIMON BAKER HAS TO PLAY BRADLEY BAKER HE WOULD BE PERFECT
And on the topic, ice cold and stoic LB? Hell yeah let’s get Robin Tunney playing her too, Baker and LB were engaged after all and Simon and Robin would be a DREAM team and would relish getting to play against each other again, in a role close but adjacent to Patrick and Teresa.

Ruby Redfort, every smart kid’s smart kid 🪰
I loved reading the Clarice bean books (I’m a huge Lauren child fan) and when I found out Lauren Child was writing the Ruby Redfort series I was unbelievably hyped (I saw the first book in Waterstones and would not shut up about it, everyone had to know cos like she was writing the books from within the books! Tiny brain could not handle 🤯) Now I’ve finally got round to actually reading them (you know when you start a series and stuff just happens and you get lost somewhere half way, yeah that happened) I am hooked, I’m about to start book 5, I love Ruby, I love Clancy, I love Hitch, I would like my own Hitch to come solve all my problems.

SCRIBBLING UP DESIGNSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS nothing's in stone yet but these r pretty accurate to the Internal Vishion
[Image description: 4 digital drawings of characters from the Ruby Redfort books. In the first, Hitch speaks with one eyebrow raised, gesturing with his left hand. He is a dark-haired man in his 30s, wearing a black suit. The next three drawings are full-body shots of the characters and their outfits. Ruby stands confidently with her hands in her pockets, wearing her glasses, a white and red t-shirt that reads "zip it", blue jeans and a belt. Clancy has his arms and legs crossed as he leans slightly against a wall. He has short sandy hair and wears a blue jacket over a white button-up, green trousers and bright red socks. LB has a severe expression and grey hair pulled back into a bun, and has her hands clasped in front of her. She wears a turtleneck, blazer and skirt, all white. Her feet are bare and her toenails painted red. The background is the same blood red. /End description]

also while i'm up on my soapbox i wanna say i don't have any super clear ruby redfort gender headcanons i tend to make up my mind in the moment based off of Vibes, but i do think that clancy crew is the type of guy (debatable) to say well every guy dreams about what it would be like a different gender right that's normal (said with an undertone of intense longing for another life)

I constantly think about the Ruby-Count dynamic. She’s consistently terrified of him. Whenever they’re in a scene together her inner monologue is just FEAR FEAR PANIC HELP but she’s a teenage spy who cannot afford to Not Be Cool In The Face Of Danger so she forces herself to engage in witty banter about it. And the thing is the Count seems to genuinely enjoy the verbal sparring. He’s just having such a good time. He considers her to be a very smart kid who’s a worthy opponent. Sure he’s tried to kill her several times but she’s worked her way out of it, so, like, they’re almost chill now? He once spent an extravagant amount of time crafting an elaborate lemonade-based code that he knew she’d get obsessed over just so they could sit down and chat for a little bit. She may be one of the few people he actually respects but I don’t think she KNOWS that because he scares the shit out of her. But also it can’t be understated that one of Ruby’s hobbies is watching pulpy horror movies, it’s one of her favorite things. And the one time she sits down and watches some of the movies he’d directed back in the day, she can’t help but admit that they’re right up her alley

I love this scene because it really does demonstrate and back up everything the story had been telling us up til this point: Clancy Crew would never blab
Even though we know it’s convenient to the plot and reasonably he should! He knows Hitch is a safe person! But Clancy does not rat out anyone, least of all his friends, and the only reason he does finally help Hitch is when they both do a little detective work and Hitch proves to him something has happened to Ruby
And not only this but Clancy not blabbing? Reinforced throughout the series, he is a 100% loyal friend, the only time he does start to blab something I believe is when he’s given a truth serum? Or wait no I think it’s Ruby who is.
I am a huge fan of best friends to lovers ships like Percabeth, really enjoyed it when my best friend introduced me to them. But going back to the Ruby books I really really appreciate how well written Ruby and Clancy’s friendship is, I did back then and I appreciate it even more now. I appreciate it as the platonic version of everything Percabeth is, Ruby and Clancy are ride or die for one another every time all the time and you also don’t really… feel the need for a romantic element. And sure Percabeth don’t NEED romantic attraction to be loyal and such but it definitely adds more to their story, and in the case of Ruby and Clancy it just feels right that their bond is platonic, it wouldn’t add anything to their story and I think the way their friendship is explored across the books is far better actually
Something I really appreciate about the Ruby books is how her friendships are written as a supporting part of the narrative rather than a conflict. Occasionally there’s a little conflict but most of the time they’re just presented and illustrated to us in a variety of ways as their own characters, and in relation to Ruby, and it’s just really nice because it makes her whole world more… alive, and I think this is a key detail a lot of stories miss out on these days. Just because characters are background characters or secondary characters doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be fleshed out and made interesting, as a byproduct of this I feel like we often miss out on the chance of seeing not only healthy romantic relationships that support the main character and narrative but healthy relationships full stop.
Like, yes Clancy’s her best friend and he’s a key character but in like book 5 I think her friend Del is also written into the story a bit more, we get to see her relationship with Ruby and more of her tough character, and how Ruby often has to have her back and keep her out of trouble too. In book 2 when Ruby needs to let off steam she goes to have a camp out with all her friends on the beach and we learn a bit more about her goofy friend Elliot and how he makes them all laugh, reassuring Ruby about her worries. In book 4 I’m pretty sure we see more scenes with Red Munroe who is Ruby’s sweet but very clumsy friend and how generous and supportive she is, as well as meeting her cool mum who’s connected to the movie business and helps Ruby out no questions asked
Yeah the characters are plot devices, but they are given really bright and interesting personalities so while they might be used as a reason for a location change and emotional development, to introduce a new clue to the mystery or to further the main plot, they’re also really important insights into Ruby’s world. I think it’s really key that the author frames each of their interactions carefully, even if there’s going to be a larger payoff to the plot later on it’s always grounded in a mundane but character filled moment. An example is the earlier chapter when Ruby and Clancy conned their way into a woman’s hotel room, they did not immediately go there because they have been stuck on this investigation for days and were following up a lead that one of them noticed while going over the mystery again.
They were eating pizza in a square, hanging out and chatting about the best pizza topping combinations, which is such a best friend conversation ^_^, and then they noticed a strange woman and tailed her.
Writing a story is not just about plot from A to B, you have to build the world of the story and the best way you can do that is with characters.
